Nokia, the renowned technology company, recently unveiled a groundbreaking initiative in sustainable packaging, showcasing a new eco-friendly design for its products. Nokia’s Leap Towards Greener Packaging Solutions

The highlight of this innovation is the dramatic reduction in packaging size and weight. Nokia has managed to cut down the packaging size by 60% and reduce the weight by 44%. This not only means less material usage but also translates into more efficient logistics and storage, ultimately leading to lower carbon emissions associated with transportation and storage.

Nokia‘s eco-friendly approach centers on using biodegradable materials in packaging. They’ve removed non-biodegradable substances, such as foam, plastic, bleaching agents, toxins, and chemicals. The new packaging is now made of fully recyclable paperboard components, meeting Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards.

These materials are not only environmentally friendly but also robust, featuring drop-resistant cushioning to ensure product safety during transportation. The use of 100% recycled fiber-based solutions.

This revamped packaging is designed for multiple uses, encouraging consumers to repurpose or recycle, thereby reducing landfill waste. Moreover, by opting for biodegradable materials, Nokia is actively combating the issues of incineration-related carbon dioxide emissions and marine pollution. In practical application, Nokia has already begun shipping products like gigabit-speed G.fast access nodes to Deutsche Telekom in this new packaging, which is anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions by 60%.

Nokia’s commitment to the environment is not limited to packaging. The company has set ambitious goals to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030, with the ultimate aim of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The OnePlus 9 series smartphones come with the company’s new retail box that is designed to be a bit bigger in terms of length. While the packaging looks decent, there was also an alternative packaging, as revealed by OnePlus CEO Pete Lau.

Pete Lau has shared an image on Twitter showcasing an alternative packaging of the OnePlus 9 series. However, it’s not yet clear if the company had ever considered using that or if it plans to do so going forward.

The new packaging showcased by Pete Lau doesn’t have a retail box to keep the device inside. Instead, it uses plastic and has a very minimal design, similar to what you get when buying a pendrive.

The smartphone is secured behind a transparent package on the right side while the left side of the packaging mentions the key features of the device. There is no room for a charger or additional accessories. It also has a hook at the top which can be used to hand the product for display.

Along with sharing the image of this packaging, Pete Lau has added that the company is not giving up the “stylish red box” which confirms that we won’t be getting this new packaging when buying any OnePlus smartphone.

OnePlus recently officially merged with OPPO and will now act as a sub-brand of the China-based smartphone manufacturer. The announcement wasn’t surprising given that both the companies were merging several of their operations since last year.

Earlier today (12th October 2020), the retail packaging box for the upcoming gaming console from Microsoft was leaked. The image was leaked online by Jon Scarr from Best buy in Canada, who shared the picture of the Xbox Series X packaging.

Looking at the image, the packaging doesn’t offer a lot of details apart from a large image of the console itself along with a few key features, like the 1 TB SSD storage and the ability to run guns at 4K resolutions at 120 fps. The packaging is in a square shape and also is different from its last generation console’s packaging considering the design of the console itself is quite different from the older models.

However, the iconic color scheme of green with black and white is still present, which represents the Xbox branding. Samsung Electronics, a known brand in the tech industry, is developing a reusable packaging box. This is likely a move to reduce the waste generated from packaging during the sale of electronics products.

The South Korean tech giant applied for a patent under the title ‘reusable packaging box,’ which features a packaging that combines an inner cushion and an outer protective layer. Generally, a large electronic product like a refrigerator ais shipped in a large cardboard box with styrofoam on the inside to act as shock absorbing material. However, once the product is installed, it is unlikely that it is kept for future use and is typically disposed of immediately.

This creates additional waste and has been known to pollute the environment in the long run, especially styrofoam since its a non-biodegradable material. To tackle this, the new reusable packaging box has been designed with a focus of being used multiple times rather than simply disposing it after one use. Furthermore, the integrated cushion material and outer cover simplify the packaging process while also reduces the number of waste products.

Samsung has been influenced by many factors, one of which includes an upcoming Government regulation on waste in its home country, South Korea. With the immense growth of e-commerce on a global scale, an awful lot of inventory and packaging are sent on one way trips. This results in a large amount of waste being gathered and resources being drained. But now, a startup by the name of LivingPackets has developed a reusable box that might replace the conventional cardboard boxes we see being used every day.

THE BOX

Interestingly, the reusable form of packaging has been dubbed THE BOX. And apart from its reusability, it also arrives with an integrated E Ink display, which seeks to replace traditional shipping labels. One of THE BOX’s main highlight feature is the fact that it can be used up to 1,000 times before needing a replacement.

To make THE BOX viable, LivingPackets also included the E Ink display which only consumes power when the label changes. Thus, it is also energy efficient, whilst also featuring environmental sensor to measure the temperature, humidity, and shocks. It can also connect to the internet allowing THE BOX to be tracked via an app.

Viability

According to LivingPackets, the production cost of the reusable box is around 100 times more than a conventional cardboard box. However, the company further added that it could actually savs customers (major e-commerce firms and rather any company with inventory) money in the longer run. Additionally, THE BOX even helps reduce CO2 emissions (Carbon Dioxide) and other wastes if it is reused properly.

LivingPackets with THE BOX is planning on developing an ecosystem through which it charges its customers for its services, not the reusable box itself. Customers can also send packages using a smartphone app by selecting a carrier and method of delivery. Thus, it would even enable delivery brands to save money with the reusable form of packaging.
