Earlier today (26th January 2021), an Apple patent application was published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The patent is for future foldable devices from the company, which would sport multiple integrated cameras.

According to a PatentlyApple report, the new patent is related to future foldable devices from Apple. These devices may arrive with multiple cameras that are integrated into the flexible housing that could greatly improve the panoramic imaging capabilities of the foldable smartphone. The cameras in question are housed in different locations on the frame that provides various different angles of view to the sensors as well.

In the patent, the Cupertino based giant notes that it can be difficult to capture panoramic shots with a traditional wide angle camera on an iPhone. Due to slight movements of the users’ hands, the resulting image might come out as blurry. Other factors like a partially changing or moving scene/subject can also lead to the feature being impractical as well. Thus, Apple has aimed to work on the issue on devices with a “flexible housing formed from flexible fabric, flexible polymer, or other flexible materials.”

In other words, these devices could potentially sport multiple cameras that are mounted at different locations across the flexible housing. These cameras might be able to capture multiple images of a single. Similarly, the sensors could also be panned outward to capture overlapping images of a scene that are then stitched together to form a composite panoramic image. At the moment, it is currently unknown if Apple is actually working on such a device or just covering all bases. So stay tuned for more updates.

Xiaomi has launched a new product under the crowdfunding platform and this time around it is a panoramic camera. The camera is a plug and play camera which comes with a USB Type-C interface that allows it to be plugged directly into a smartphone. The camera is called MADV Mini Panoramic camera and is produced by Beijing Crazy King Technology Co. Ltd. In keeping up with Xiaomi’s trademark, the Mini camera comes with a cheap 399 Yuan (~$61) price tag.

Specs wise, the MADV Mini Panoramic camera features a 13MP camera on one side, teaming up with a 13MP camera on the other side. It comes in a compact size which is about the size of a male wristwatch dial. With such size and a weight of just 23.5g, it is easy to fit into the pocket. The camera also comes with a dual 210 ° wide-angle fisheye lens and each lens has an F1.8 large aperture, greatly reducing the dead zone at both ends. The camera can shoot at 5K resolution (5276 x 2688p) JPEG high-definition panoramic photos and 1920 x 960p resolution high-definition videos @ 30fps.

In addition, the camera supports panoramic electronic image stabilization, shooting asteroids, crystal ball, fisheye and other panoramic shooting modes. There is a MADV Mini app through which you can view and edit the panoramic photos and videos shot, and it supports one-click sharing on multiple platforms as well as the recording of panoramic life.

The Yi 360 VR camera comes with dual lenses that are adjacent to each other with each having a 220-degree wide angle FOV. The cameras each have a 12MP SonyIMX377 sensor and f/2.0 aperture. The Yi Panoramic camera is Google Street View ready and has WiFi connectivity. There is also a 1400mAH battery and a microphone which means you can Livestream videos with the camera. It also comes with a USB Type-C port, microSD slot as well as Bluetooth 4.2.

The product will be officially announced on June 1 while booking will start on June 11. The camera comes in white and black colors and it carries a price tag of 2499 Yuan (~$364). Meanwhile, the Yi technology’s website puts it up on pre-order for $399 for those in the U.S.
