Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple might include the 5X tetraprism camera in next year’s iPhone 16 Pro which is one of the exclusive features of this year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. It comes from the yield rate improvements of Apple’s periscope camera supplier, Largan’s tetraprism lens assembly. Reportedly, the yield for the said equipment has increased from 40% in 3Q23 to 70% in 4Q23.

Huawei might be the next big player to adopt Largan’s periscope equipment

Largan’s exclusive position as the supplier for the tetraprism camera lens for the iPhone 15 Pro Max initially faced challenges, with a production yield of only 40% in the third quarter of 2023. This led to negative gross margins and a dip in EPS. However, Kuo’s recent surveys indicate a substantial improvement in yield to 70% or more, turning the tetraprism lens assembly profitable and a major contributor to fourth-quarter EPS.

The expected 2023 EPS of ~150 significantly surpasses the conservative market consensus of 130–140. Looking ahead to 2024, the camera equipment manufacturer is expected to gain more shares for periscope camera lenses, especially from two key players — Apple and Huawei.

Apple’s inclusion of a tetraprism camera in the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to drive a staggering 160% YoY growth in iPhone shipments featuring this advanced camera technology. Huawei, with its upcoming Huawei P70 series featuring periscope cameras and powered by its own Kirin chips, is also anticipated to witness a 100% YoY shipment growth in 2024.

Largan, holding primary supplier status for both Apple and Huawei, is expected to gain supply shares of 85–90% and 50–60%, respectively.

The improvements in yield for Apple’s tetraprism lens assembly from 3Q23 in 4Q23 hints a significant 130% increase in total periscope orders for the manufacturer in 2024.

He claimed that the brand is currently testing a new periscope camera on an “SM8650” product. This model number in question reportedly refers to Qualcomm’s next gen flagship grade chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. While the leak doesn’t specifically hint at the smartphone being the OnePlus 12 model, it is highly likely to be this device considering the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that powered OnePlus 11.

Furthermore, the leak further adds that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be announced sometime around the end of this year. In other words, it is likely that the OnePlus 12 will feature this high end processor. Apart from this, another tipster Max Jambor stated that the Chinese smartphone maker is also planning on bringing various upgrades to the camera on its upcoming 2024 flagship smartphone. This includes the testing of the new periscope lens.

With the addition of the new and improved periscope lens, the OnePlus 12 will be capable of offering better zoom functionality. As the much-anticipated launch of the iPhone 15 series approaches, new leaks are stirring up excitement. A new leak suggests that the top-tier iPhone 15 Pro Max is set to receive a significant camera upgrade, with the introduction of a periscope lens.

Earlier rumors suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models would both feature periscope lenses, but reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that only the Pro Max model will have it. Sources also revealed that Apple has partnered with LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics to source 70% and 30% of OIS actuators for the periscope module, respectively.

Better Zoom Capabilities Expected with iPhone 15 Pro Max’s Camera

The enhanced telephoto camera aims to replace the 3x optical zoom lens found in the current iPhone 14 Pro Max, potentially offering up to 6x optical zoom. This would be a substantial upgrade, despite still falling behind the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 10x optical zoom.

The new periscope lens is part of a slew of improvements that Apple seems to be making in the camera department. Along with the new lens, the iPhone 15 Pro models are also said to use a new Sony IMX903 48MP sensor with a larger sensor size of 1/1.14-inch. This enhancement is expected to capture more light and detail compared to the Sony IMX803 sensor found in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

In addition to the camera upgrades, the past leaks hint at other noteworthy changes in the iPhone 15 Pro models. Notably, the use of titanium materials for the chassis and the replacement of the Mute switch with a multi-tasking button similar to the Action Button in the Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple is apparently planning on bringing a periscopic telephoto lens sensor to its 2023 iPhone lineup. The brand is rumored to have entered into an agreement with a lens supplier that will make these sensors for its future iPhones, starting from the iPhone 15 series.

According to TheElec, the South Korea based Jahwa Electronics recently announced that it plans to spend over 150 million US Dollars to build a plant that manufactures new OIS (optical image stabilization) actuators. This is notable considering Apple had previously visited the new facilities during the first half of last year. In other words, it is quite likely that the heavy investment arrives as a part of an agreement, which means that the Cupertino based giant will soon be acquiring these new OIS actuators next year.

This timeline puts it in line for the 2023 iPhone series. For those unaware, the iPhone maker typically asks its suppliers to build a dedicated production line that is exclusive for the parts that it sources from them. But, the new site that is planned to be built in Gumi will have to be approved by Apple, and could possibly take a year to complete. The company has been rumored to bring a periscopic telephoto lens for its smartphone for some time now, so it won’t be far fetched to assume that next year’s iPhone 15 might finally be the one to feature this camera technology.

Initial reports had also hinted at the iPhone 14 Pro possibly launching with this sensor. Although, newer reports have hinted otherwise. For those unaware, a periscopic telephoto lens usually allows for further zoom capabilities due to a “folded” telephoto setup inside the smartphone. In other words, the approval for the components means that the high end Pro models of 2023 iPhone will feature optical zoom lens. An analyst has just revealed interesting information regarding the 2023 Apple iPhone series. Apparently, one of the models within the iPhone 15 series will feature a periscope camera lens that offers improved zoom capabilities.

According to a MacRumors report, analyst Jeff Pu stated that the iPhone 15 Pro might feature a periscope camera system, which would enable the company to fit a longer telephoto setup inside the device. Additionally, this would also allow users to zoom in even further without losing quality. The Cupertino based giant has been rumored to include a periscope lens on its iPhones for a while now, with first mentions of it arriving from a known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo back in 2020.

It was previously reported that the iPhone 14 Pro would feature this camera technology. But now, the latest report hints that the wait for this might be a whole year longer. As of right now, the current premium grade flagship iPhone 13 series offers 3x optical zoom on the Pro models.

But with the next gen models, the iPhone might be able to offer optical zoom up to 10x, which would have it rival top end Android phones in the market. While other manufacturers have jumped on the periscope camera train for better zoom, OnePlus has stuck to a traditional telephoto camera for all the zoom it needs. That may change next year with the OnePlus 10 Pro according to new info out of China.

The OnePlus 10 Pro will be one of at least two OnePlus flagships that will be announced in the first half of the year. Going by this year’s product lineup, the other two should be the standard OnePlus 10 and the OnePlus 10R. Last month, OnePlus itself revealed a key detail about the phones and that is a new operating system borne from the fusion of OxygenOS and ColorOS.

Now, a leak from China has revealed that the OnePlus 10 Pro will be coming with a significant camera upgrade. According to the leaker that goes by @Bald Panda on Weibo, the OnePlus 10 Pro will have a camera with a periscope lens that brings 5x optical zoom. This is an upgrade over the 3.3x optical zoom the 8MP telephoto camera on the OnePlus 9 Pro offers.

Unfortunately, the source didn’t reveal the rest of the camera specs of the 2022 flagship. We don’t know if there will be a telescope camera along with the periscope camera just as it is on the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Save for this new camera detail, we have also heard that the OnePlus 10 series may not feature huge changes with respect to its design.

While Apple had previously been rumored to include a periscopic zoom lens in its iPhones last year, the company has yet to launch a smartphone with a dedicated camera with magnification capabilities. But, it seems that the technology is still in the works as the company patented a ‘Periscopic Camera Module’.

According to a PatentlyApple report, the US Patent and Trademark Office published a new patent application, earlier today (29th January 2021). In the documents, the Cupertino based giant’s invention is for a folding camera technology with a range of 85 to 165mm. This folded camera could perhaps be used in a small form factor camera module. The patented camera features two light folding elements and a lens system located between these two elements.

Furthermore, the lens system itself may be independent from the light folding elements and it may also include an aperture stop and lens element with a refractive power mounted in a lens barrel. In simpler terms, the camera system could essentially offer superior optical zoom capabilities paired with additional digital zoom functionality as well. We can expect this technology to arrive in future iPhones, although, it is currently unknown if the new camera lens would ship with the 2021 iPhone lineup.

Notably, the patent document also added that this camera lens is not just limited to the iPhone and we could even see it debut in a “a personal computer system, desktop computer, laptop, notebook, tablet or pad device, slate, or netbook computer, mainframe computer system, handheld computer, workstation,” and many other such devices. Meaning, this could just be Apple covering all bases at the moment. So stay tuned for more updates.

The periscope camera has become a common sight on a number of flagships lately. The lens allows you to capture close up objects from a much farther distance, as they offer a longer range of zoom than a typical telephoto camera. OnePlus is yet to announce a phone with a periscope camera, and now a leaker has revealed that the OnePlus 9 series will also be missing out on the future.

OnePlus’s sister company, OPPO, is one of the first manufacturers in the industry to launch a phone with a periscope camera. Actually, it was the first manufacturer to even show off the technology for mobile phones but Huawei launched the first commercially available phone with the feature. So you would think OnePlus will also be one of the early adopters but that has not been the case.

According to Max Jambor, OnePlus’s upcoming flagship phones, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro do not have a periscope camera. That must be disappointing for fans of the brand that have hoped that the new flagships or at least the pro model will have a periscope camera.

Despite the missing periscope camera, the OnePlus 9 series is expected to have better cameras than its predecessor. The same leaker had said, albeit indirectly, in a tweet a few days ago that the OnePlus 9’s camera will be “worth the shot”.

The OnePlus 9 series will have three models – the OnePlus 9 Lite which should come with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 870 processor and the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro which will have the more powerful Snapdragon 888 processor.

Apart from the difference in processors, the three phones are expected to have different display sizes and resolutions It has been reported in a leak that the OnePlus 9 Pro will have a curved screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a QHD+ resolution. The other two models should have flat displays with an FHD+ resolution and high refresh rates. Other areas where they will differ are cameras, battery capacity, and fast charging technology.

OnePlus is expected to announce the OnePlus 9 series in March alongside other products including its very first smartwatch which will launch as the OnePlus Watch.

Vivo hasn’t talked much about the upcoming X60 Pro+ smartphone apart from a brief teaser back at the X60 series launch. Recently, the company has been widely promoting the X60, X60 Pro on social media platforms like Weibo. While it is yet to reveal the top-end flagship details, a JD.com listing reveals color names and memory variants.

As GSMArena reports, a Vivo X60 Pro+ listing appears on Jingdong(JD.com). Although the listing doesn’t reveal any specs, it says the device is a 5G flagship. Further, the placeholder images are nothing but the Snapdragon 888 SoC, close-up of a probable Periscope lens, and Leather Patterns.

And if you look down the listing, we have information about the color and memory variants. Apparently, the X60 Pro+ will have two color options- Deep Ocean Blue and Classic Orange. If the listing is true, the memory variant of the device is either 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, or 12GB RAM, 256GB storage. Do note that a disclaimer image at last says final information could vary after launch.

Also, the JD listing points to a shipping date of around January 30, 2021, which means the launch could be in the fourth week of January(23-30). One of the highly anticipated smartphones expected to berth in the first quarter of 2021 is the Oneplus 9 series. As should be expected, there have been several leaks surrounding the flagship OnePlus series and more are still coming. Noted tipster Digital Chat Station has hinted that the Oneplus 9 series won’t feature a periscope lens on any of the models.

The use of the periscope lens is fast gaining popularity among OEMs and the lens offers tremendous possibilities in terms of mobile photography. In most cases where OEMs have released a flagship with a periscope lens, it is usually on the topmost model. OnePlus is expected to release three new models next year but apparently, none of them will have a periscope telephoto camera. The disclosure by Digital Chat Station is the second time this rumor is emerging. It was first tipped back in November when several CAD-based renders of the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro appeared online.

The renders suggest the device will come with four rear cameras but none of them will be a periscope lens. However, there has been no reason adduced as to why the device will miss out on the periscope lens. Also, there is no official word yet from Oneplus confirming or refuting the rumor of the OnePlus 9 missing out on the periscope lens.

Considering that the periscope lens is a popular piece of technology implemented by the likes of Huawei, Samsung, OPPO, Realme, and Xiaomi. Expectations are the OnePlus 9 Pro will have two prominent camera modules, accompanied by two smaller lenses.

OnePlus’ flagship for this year, the OnePlus 8 Pro and the Find X2 Pro that were very similar in hardware. The Find X2 Pro periscope telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom while the OP8 Pro was launched with a modest 3x zoom shooter. So, it was expected that the OnePlus 9 Pro would address this disparity but that may end up not happening.

Vivo is buckling up to launch the Vivo X60 series of Smartphones in China. Although the Chinese giant hasn’t really stood firm on a launch date yet, it could be on December 28. In the run-up to the official reveal, an unboxing video has now joined the train of Vivo X60 Pro leaks.

A YouTube user has uploaded a short unboxing video of the upcoming Vivo X60 Pro. The video opens up to the retail packaging that looks a lot like the Vivo X60’s retail box we saw a few days back. It appears to have a Dark bluish color with a Vivo X60 Pro written on it.

Opening it up reveals the device itself. The device has a Gray rear panel with a rectangular camera layout up top and Vivo branding at the bottom. Speaking of which, the layout, as seen in some of the official renders, has the quad-camera setup. Three of the lenses are arranged like a triangle while the fourth periscope lens sits at the bottom beside the ZEISS logo.

There is an LED flashlight at the tail end(vertically) of the rear camera stack. Turning it up, we see the power and volume buttons to the right, and the curved screen with centered punch-hole upfront. We must admit that Vivo’s curved screens have come a long way(eg. 120-degree curves on Apex 2020). And it looks like the X60 series’s curves feature subtle curves like Samsung‘s devices.

At the bottom, we see that the device has a microphone, USB-C port, speaker grille, and SIM card tray. It’s worth noting that the unit that’s being unboxed here also has a ‘PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY’ slogan and a secondary mic at the top.

The next exciting part here is the UI of the device. As the user unlocks it, we are greeted with the new OriginOS. If you recall, the company unveiled the new UI based on Android 11 on November 18. It’s now almost certain that the X60 series will debut with the new UI corroborating with the earlier leak.

Anyway, the X60 series will mostly include two devices- X60, X60 Pro. However, there’s also a possibility of an X60 Pro+ with Snapdragon 888 SoC. Other than that, the rest of the devices will have an AMOLED 120Hz display, Exynos 1080 SoC, triple cameras(X60) with X60 Pro having an additional 8MP periscope lens, 33W fast charging, and more.

It’s been a few weeks since Apple launched its new iPhone 12 series in the market and now reports about the next-generation smartphones from the tech giant, the iPhone 13 lineup, have already started surfacing online.

A report from DigiTimes (via sina) claims that Apple is now looking to cooperate with South Korean companies for the periscope lens as it is trying to strengthen the optical zoom performance on the upcoming iPhones.

While it has not been finalized yet but the report indicates that the partner companies for this could be Samsung. The South Korean giant has also used the periscope lens on its flagship smartphones, enabling a massive 100x zoom.

Currently, a few flagship smartphones in the market come with a periscope lens for better photography features, including the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, Huawei P40 Pro, Vivo X50 Pro+, OPPO Find X2 Pro, Huawei Mate40 Pro, and more.

The Israeli company had sued Samsung and Apple for patent infringement on telephoto zoom tech but as it has now been acquired by Samsung, the South Korean company holds the patents and Apple will have to partner to get the technology for its products.

Earlier this month, we had reported on a Huawei patent regarding a smartphone with a penta camera setup on the back. Now, we have another patent that has surfaced, this time with an under screen selfie shooter and a periscopic zoom lens.

The new patent was filed with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), which was approved and published earlier today (18th September 2020). According to a LetsGoDigital report, the patent carries 24 product images. Looking at these design sketches, the device has a curved edge display on both sides and minimal bezels. Under the display, a selfie shoot is housed, with the rear having a quad camera setup.

The rear camera module is housed in a very unique manner with 3 different variants of the device being patented. One has the rear camera module housed in the middle of the back panel, while the other two have it placed either at the top right or top left, respectively. The four cameras are housed in a cross shaped manner with the LED flash being in the middle. The sensor at the bottom is square shapped, indicating that its a periscopic zoom lens. The company’s branding can also be observed on the bottom.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding this Huawei smartphone or even its name is currently unknown. Furthermore, it is also unclear if the Chinese tech giant is actually working on such a handset or whether it is just covering all bases. We might see these designs make an appearance in a Huawei smartphone in the near future, although, only an official company announcement will confirm it.

With the introduction of the zoom function in mobile phone cameras, the periscope module has become the standard, especially for flagship models. However, one challenge manufacturers face is the increase in the weight and thickness of the phone body at a time fans lookout for lightweight and thin smartphones. To mitigate this challenge, Chinese image sensor manufacturer O-Film has unveiled its latest periscope lens module for smartphones that is just 5.9 mm thick.

The model isn’t just compact, it also offers continuous zoom instead of being locked at a specific focal length like what obtains on current periscopes. The modules are said to be capable of smoothly transitioning between 85mm and 170mm (in 35mm equivalent) while the lens aperture simultaneously changes from f/3.1 to f/5.1.

Further, the new O-Film module will provide 3x to 7x magnification compared to a typical wide camera. The company claims that it can also manufacture periscope designs with 3-5x, 5-8x and 3.5-9.5x zoom ranges. There is a piezoelectric motor onboard which smoothly and accurately drives a 3-lens assembly alongside the autofocus mechanism forward and back to reach the desired focal length.

The Continuous zoom feature is said to offer higher quality images at different levels. The feature also adds to the usefulness of the periscopes as current designs with 5x magnification limit you to shooting only faraway objects.

In addition, the new module also has a prism which is deployed for Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). We hope to see this module gets adopted on a smartphone soon.

On 9th December 2019, Vivo went on Weibo to officially reveal the invitation for the announcement conference of the Vivo X30 series. The upcoming smartphone is equipped with a periscopic telephoto lens which is capable of an impressive of 60x magnification.

According to the images shared on the Chinese microblogging site, Vivo revealed the invitation letters with multiple telescopes and even a magnifying glass. It is a creative yet subtle way of implying of the upcoming smartphones’ zoom-in capabilities. ‘See Farther and Clearer’ was also a prominent catchphrase used and further signifies the importance of the handset’s camera.

Vivo’s X30 series is a 5G smartphone from the company and is stated to be the flagship handset for photography. Through these specialized lenses, it is capable of achieving 60 times super zoom to look far into the distance. Since it was taken from an unknown source the credibility of the images is doubtful but still showcase incredible results.

Flagship smartphones from Chinese brands Huawei and Oppo, namely Huawei P30 Pro and Oppo Reno 10X Zoom uses a periscope lens to enhance the photography experience. Now, it seems that another Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi will soon join the list.

This is being speculated as the company’s recent application titled “Camera Components and Electronic Devices” was unveiled. The patent carries an application number CN201822150093.2, dated December 20, 2018, which was released to the public on July 2.

The patent from the company shows that the camera components described in Xiaomi’s patent scheme include the main lens as well as at least one potential auxiliary lens. It shows that by setting up the main lens and at least one optical axis perpendicular to the main lens light axis, and by making the inlet of the periscope assist lens fit with the light outlet of the main lens, the periscope auxiliary lens can be used without increasing the thickness of the main lens.

It is not yet known in which of its upcoming smartphones will Xiaomi use this new camera technology. However, it’s being speculated that the company could use this in the Mi MIX series given that it’s the most expensive series from Xiaomi. Do note that this is just a speculation and the technology could come up in some other device. But, it’s still worth looking forward to the Mi MIX 4 which is likely to house periscope lens.
