The development was first <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-20/paypal-said-to-explore-purchase-of-social-media-firm-pinterest">reported by <em>Bloomberg</em></a>, citing people aware of the matter but didn&#8217;t want to be identified.</p>
<p>If the deal goes through, then it will mark the biggest acquisition of a social media company so far. Currently, Microsoft&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/acquisition">acquisition</a> of LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in the year 2016 is the biggest transaction in this category.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-365699 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal.jpg?x23692" alt="Paypal" width="1200" height="675" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/paypal-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>A source aware of the development has said that PayPal is offering $70 per share for the acquisition of Pinterest, mostly in stock. If everything goes as expected for the online payments provider, then the deal could be announced early next month when <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/paypal">PayPal</a> reports its quarterly earnings.</p>
<p>However, do note that the deal isn&#8217;t certain yet and the terms associated with it could get changed. As the news surfaced online, the shares of PayPal fell while Pinterest saw a surge in its shares.</p>
<p>With the acquisition of Pinterest, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/paypal">PayPal</a> would be able to capture more of the e-commerce growth as online shoppers are following influencers on platforms. It will also help the company diversify its income with advertising revenue.</p>
<p>Pinterest was valued at about $13 billion when it went public in 2019 and since then, the company saw a huge spike in users looking for crafts and DIY project ideas because of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/covid-19">COVID-19 pandemic</a>. The company has warned about slowing user growth, especially in the US, as lockdowns eased.</p>
<p>The price offered by PayPal for the acquisition of Pinterest, founded in 2010, is 62 times the social media company&#8217;s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization over the last 12 months.</p>
<p>PayPal has turned towards acquisition to boost its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/e-commerce">e-commerce</a> offerings. In 2019, the company purchased Honey Science for $4 billion, and earlier this year, it acquired Japan-based Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL) firm Paidy for $2.7 billion. It has also acquired return-service provider Happy Returns in May this year.</p>
<p>In related news, Pinterest co-founder Evan Sharp announced last week that he would step down as the company&#8217;s chief creative officer to join LoveFrom, a firm led by Jony Ive, known for designing many <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> products.</p>

The deal involved a buyout worth 51 billion US Dollar for the popular social media platform.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-331989 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/microsoft.jpg?x23692" alt="Microsoft" width="1024" height="563" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/microsoft.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/microsoft-300x165.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/microsoft-768x422.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/microsoft-696x383.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/microsoft-764x420.jpg 764w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-pinterest-m-a-microsoft/microsoft-approached-pinterest-in-recent-months-about-potential-deal-ft-idUSKBN2AB05C" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Reuters</em> </a>(based on a <a href="https://on.ft.com/2Z7Isa5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Financial Times</em></a> report), the American based tech giant was reportedly in talks regarding a possible acquisition deal, as per sources close to the matter. The report adds that the negotiations are not active at the moment. Due to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/coronavirus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Coronavirus</a> pandemic, Pinterest saw a general increase in engagement and traffic on its platform, with its month active users jumping from 37 percent, reaching 459 million in the final quarter of last year.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the company also stated that it registered a record 100 million monthly active users back in 2020. Since then, the social media platform&#8217;s shares have risen seven fold from its pandemic low back in March of last year. Notably, Pinterest has also previously suggested of its stance on remaining an independent firm. For those unaware, the social media platform also generates revenue through ads, and posts uploaded by users of the site, similar to other platforms.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-370739 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image.png?x23692" alt="Microsoft" width="1200" height="630" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image.png 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image-300x158.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image-768x403.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image-1024x538.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image-696x365.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image-1068x561.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/facebook_share_image-800x420.png 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>Interestingly, the deal would&#8217;ve also been an indicator on the new US President Joe Biden&#8217;s administrations stance on allowing major tech firms to form deals. Unfortunately, both firms have yet to respond to the matter. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available.</p>
