Sony has long been rumored to be working on a mid-cycle upgrade for its PlayStation 5. We have already covered  PlayStation 5 Pro leaks that hint at its performance enhancements. But we have yet to receive an official word on its release. So is it really waiting for? Or is the PS5 still relevant?

What do we know about the Sony PS5 Pro?

Before we get into the real questions, here’s some context about what the PS5 Pro could offer. An early report from March claimed that the PS5 Pro’s CPU will be identical to the standard PS5 console. But, the Pro variant is apparently bringing a new ‘High CPU Frequency Mode.’ So simply put, there is an overclocking option. 

The push in the CPU’s clock speed to 3.85GHz implies a 10% increase in CPU power. This will be paired with a 28% higher bandwidth, up from 448GB/s to 576GB/s. This higher bandwidth should enable fast data transfer that could help in improved graphical fidelity, faster rendering, and more. But the real upgrades lie in graphics. Reportedly, Sony could offer a 45% leap in rendering power, which could go up to 4x in some cases. 

This means that we can finally get better ray tracing performance and an impressive 33.5 teraflops of compute power. All this points to Sony’s plans on offering a playable experience at 8K resolution, and smoother gameplay at 4K on the PS5 Pro. Apart from this, the brand plans to improve its audio technology, which could be dubbed the ACV (Audio Compute Voice) for a 35% gain for the ACM *Audio Compute Module) library.

So what’s the catch?

With the PS5 Pro on the horizon, there’s a chance that Sony could discontinue the standard PS5 (keeping the PS5 Slim). However, if all options are still being sold, there is likely a premium on that price tag. We can expect around a $100 jump over the standard PS5. Most games that are already on the PS5 likely won’t see a massive improvement in terms of visual fidelity. 

Playing at a higher resolution at a smoother frame rate is definitely a boon. Although, it’s uncertain which games will take advantage of the improved hardware. Sony is apparently also planning games to acquire a ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced Label’. In other words, existing titles on the PS5 will get an update to allow upscaled resolution and higher frame rate. While titles under Sony’s belt like God of War: Ragnarok will likely get this rating, third-party developers may not opt for this.

Is the PS5 Pro really worth the wait?

As of right now, the PS5 Pro sounds like the most powerful gaming console. However, PS5 owners aren’t missing out on much since their current-gen model is still quite capable. Some are waiting on GTA 6 and I can understand that you want to have the best experience since its requirements are pretty steep. 

But holding out on gaming for a single title doesn’t seem worthwhile. Thinking about all the fun you’d miss out on, I’d suggest getting the base PS5 right now (even the PS5 Slim). If you don’t have a PS5 and are saving up for one, reports have hinted at a Holiday 2024 release for the PS5 Pro. So you could maybe be just a little more patient. Rumors of Sony’s upcoming console, the PlayStation 5 Pro, have been circulating for some time now. While details about it were scarce, a recent report by Insider Gaming has shed light on the possible specifications of the gaming console.

If the leaked specifications are to be believed, the PS 5 Pro’s CPU will remain identical to the standard PS5. However, the Pro model is said to introduce a new ‘High CPU Frequency Mode.’ 

This mode will reportedly push the CPU’s clock speed to 3.85GHz — a 10% increase over the standard console. But it may downclock the GPU’s performance by around 1.5%. 

Moreover, the PS5 Pro is rumored to have a 28% bandwidth increase. This means it will have a 576 GB/s speed compared to the standard edition’s 448 GB/s.

Higher memory bandwidth allows for faster data transfer between the system memory and the GPU, which can lead to improved graphical fidelity, faster rendering, and overall better performance in games.

Speaking of which, the PS5 Pro’s leaked GPU details reveal a dramatic upswing in performance. We’re talking about a potential 45% leap in rendering power,  2-3x (even 4x in some cases) faster ray tracing performance and an impressive 33.5 teraflops of single-precision compute. 

All this is in addition to specialized hardware for ray tracing acceleration. It all translates to a console aiming for smooth 4K experiences and a future-proofed 8K vision.

Along with this, the PS5 Pro is considered to have better audio technology. The Audio Compute Voice (ACV) reportedly runs at a higher clock speed, resulting in a 35% performance gain for the Audio Compute Module (ACM) library.

Sony’s Upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro Emerges in Leakes

With the announcement of GTA VI‘s release in 2025, the rumors about PlayStation 5 Pro have also increased. According to this, Sony aims to take advantage of the momentum behind the game, which will initially be exclusive to consoles, and therefore plans to unveil its new console at the end of 2024. Moreover, we have heard a lot about the device until now, including some technical details recently. Now, even more information has surfaced on a forum.

A new leak on the ResetEra forums has revealed supposed additional details and specifications for Sony’s upcoming PS5 Pro model, which is rumored to be unveiled in September 2024. The information comes from a user who claims to have obtained these details from reliable sources. Here are the key highlights of the leak:

• Viola is fabbed on TSMC N4P.
• GFX1115
• Viola’s CPU is maintaining the zen2 architecture found in the existing PS5 for compatibility, but the frequency will once again be dynamic with a peak of 4.4GHz. 64 KB of L1 cache per core, 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of L3 shared (4 MB per CCX).
• Viola’s die is 30WGPs when fully enabled, but it will only have 28WGPs (56 CUs) enabled for the silicon in retail PS5 Pro units.
• Trinity is the culmination of three key technologies. Fast storage (hardware accelerated compression and decompression, already an existing key PS5 technology), accelerated ray tracing, and upscaling.
• Architecture is RDNA3, but it’s taking ray tracing improvements from RDNA4. BVH traversal will be handled by dedicated RT hardware rather than fully relying on the shaders. It will also include thread reordering to reduce data and execution divergence, something akin to Ada Lovelace SER and Intel Arc’s TSU.
• 3584 shaders, 224 TMUs, and 96 ROPs.
• 16GB of 18 gbps GDDR6. 256-bit memory bus with 576 GB/s memory bandwidth.
• The GPU frequency target is 2.0 GHz. This lands the dual-issue TFLOPs in the range of 28.67 TFLOPs peak (224 (TMUs) * 2 (operations, dual issue) * 2 (core clock)). 14.33 TFLOPs if we ignore the dual-issue factor.
• 50-60% rasterization uplift over Oberon and Oberon Plus, over twice the raw RT performance.
• XDNA2 NPU will be featured for the purpose of accelerating Sony’s bespoke temporal machine learning upscaling technique. This will be one of the core focuses of the PS5 Pro, like we saw with checkboard rendering for the PS4 Pro. Temporally stable upscaled 4K output at higher than 30 FPS is the goal.
