Sony is preparing to introduce a new videogame subscription service for the PlayStation this week. The service has been under development with the codename “Spartacus” and is said to be Sony’s answer to the Xbox Game Pass.

According to a Bloomberg report, the new service will combine the Playstation Now and Playstation Plus services and will offer multiple tiers which will include modern games and classics from older PlayStation eras.

The Xbox Game Pass by Microsoft is a roaring success due to the value for money it provides. With a monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly subscription, users can download and play any game that has been made available on the Game Pass. In this regard, Microsoft does an excellent job by offering a massive library of games as well as making top titles available on day one of the release (like Halo Infinite) on the Game Pass. Sony, however, is not expected to go this route and will likely keep some games purchasable only for a certain amount of time after release. So users might not be able to experience upcoming titles like God of War Ragnarök on this service anytime soon.

Another major selling point of the Xbox Game Pass is its availability on PC. This area will also be a challenge for Sony as they have a considerably longer list of console-exclusive games compared to Xbox. The company has recently announced that some of the previously Playstation Exclusive games will soon come to PC, however, it will likely take some time before Sony is able to make a comprehensive enough library to attract PC gamers.
