The company recently announced that the phone has crossed the 1 million sales mark by the second quarter of 2022.

The POCO C31 delivered a value disruption unheard of in its market thanks to its premium chipset, triple camera system, and big 5,000mAh battery. With its distinctive look and extensive feature set, POCO C31 was the second C-series product, following POCO C3, to reach 1 million sales.

The POCO C series has consistently offered good value-for-money specifications at that price point and is targeted at the sub-ten thousand rupee market in India. Recently, the POCO C3 sold more than 2 million units in January 2022.

Notably, the POCO C31 is identically similar to the POCO C3 when it comes to the build of the two devices, with only one major difference being the newer device does not sport the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Consequently, the device has the same 6.53-inch LCD display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, 720 x 1600 (HD+), and a dewdrop notch. It is driven by a MediaTek Helio G35 SoC with 32GB/64GB of eMMC 5.1 storage and 3GB/4GB of LPDDR4x RAM.

On the rear of the device are three cameras: a 13MP primary sensor, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth camera. It conceals a 5MP selfie camera inside the notch on the front.

The phone offers dual-SIM, 4G, VoLTE, VoWiFi, single-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0 in terms of connectivity. Its operating system is MIUI 12, which is based on Android 10. The phone also has a dedicated MicroSD card slot, a MicroUSB connector, a 3.5mm headphone socket, a P2i nano-coating for splash protection, a 5,000mAh battery, and 10W charging.

This sales record seems to be a really strong performance for both POCO and the series. Sales numbers like this might influence other OEMs to develop a smartphone that is both affordable and offers an excellent user experience, offering consumers additional options.

The POCO C3 was first announced in India in October 2020 which means it took just 3 months to hit the one million mark. Nine months down the line, POCO has again announced that it had sold over 2 million units of the budget C3.

The POCO C3 is a budget smartphone and despite the fact that sales have obviously slowed down since January when one million units were sold, this still is an impressive feat. Moreso, considering that POCO has released other models since after the launch.

As a reminder, the POCO C3 has a large immersive 6.53-inch HD+ LCD display with a water-drop notch and HD+ resolution. The phone is equipped with up to 4 GB of RAM and it houses a 5,000mAh battery. The phone offers “blazing-fast performance” with the MediaTek Helio G35 SoC at the helm.

The rear side of the POCO C3 has a dual-tone design. It has a square-shaped camera housing. The camera module has a 13-megapixel main camera, a 2-megapixel macro lens, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, as well as an LED flash. For selfies, there is a 5-megapixel camera housed on the waterdrop notch. Another impressive feature is the Splash-proof P2i coating that is rare to find on smartphones within the C3’s price point.

The POCO C3, which is available in Arctic Blue, Lime Green, and Matte Black colors, is presently priced at Rs. 7499 (~$101) on Flipkart for the base 3GB+32GB version. The price could come further down to Rs. 6799 (~$92) during the Big Savings day sale.

The POCO C3 was unveiled in early October, a month ahead of Diwali festive season. It debuted at ₹7,499 for the base 3GB + 32GB variant and ₹8,999 for the higher 4GB + 64GB version. Soon after this handset’s release, POCO managed to sell over 1 million units of smartphones during the Flipkart Big Billion Days sale event.

Then, earlier this month, POCO slashed the price of the POCO C3 higher variant by ₹500. A few days later, the brand announced that it was the third largest smartphone brand online in India in the month of November 2020. That’s not all, POCO C3 was the number three selling smartphone during that time.

Now, the brand says that it has sold over a million units of POCO C3 since its launch in India. Also, as part of ongoing Republic Day sale on Flipkart, both the variants of this phone are now discounted by ₹500. And customers can get it for even cheaper by availing the partner bank offer.

It is interesting to see POCO C3 sell these many units despite it being online (Flipkart) and India-exclusive handset. For those who do not know, it is a rebranded Redmi 9C for the Indian market. Besides Xiaomi, even Realme came up with a lot of budget phones: the main rival of the POCO C3 is the Realme C12. In the same price range, you can even find the amazing Infinix Hot 9 which offers unique specifications for that segment. Here is an in-depth specs comparison between POCO C3, Infinix Hot 9, and Realme C12.

Design

The most attractive design belongs to the Infinix Hot 9, at least in my honest opinion. One of the reasons is that it has a punch-hole display instead of a classic waterdrop notch, and it makes the device look more elegant. Even the color variants are more attractive with their prism pattern. On the other hand, Realme C12 and POCO C3 are more compact in terms of dimensions. But the Infinix Hot 9 is thinner and lighter: this is another reason which would let me go for it. What would your choice be?

Display

You’d better focus on the other specifications because there are no big differences between the displays of these devices and we are not talking about great displays. They come with below-average HD+ resolution, so you do not get a very high level of detail. They are good panels, but there are a lot of better options if you increase your budget a bit. I would personally go for the POCO C3 due to its high brightness, but the Infinix Hot 9 has a wider panel with a punch-hole design. Note that POCO C3 does not feature a fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

The most advanced hardware setup belongs to the POCO C3, at least in the most expensive memory configurations. It is fueled by the Helio G35 mobile platform by Mediatek paired with up to 4 GB of RAM and it is actually better for advanced users and multi-tasking. Right after, we got the Realme C12 with an Helio G35 chipset paired with 3 GB of RAM. Unfortunately, Infinix Hot 9 boasts a weaker Helio A25, but you can get more internal storage: up to 128 GB. In each case, you get Android 10 out of the box and a micro SD dedicated slot to expand the internal storage.

Camera

On the paper, Infinix Hot 9 has a more interesting camera department. In its most expensive configurations, it has a 16 MP quad-camera instead of the 13 MP triple camera found on the POCO C3 and the Realme C12. The quad-camera includes a pair of 2 MP sensors for macro and depth calculation and a QVGA low light sensor to improve shots in the dark. Further, the Infinix Hot 9 has a better 8 MP front camera. This device is all but a camera phone, but it is superior to its rivals. POCO C3 and Realme C12 come with the same entry-level camera setup with the algorithm and camera apps making the difference.

Battery

The strongest point of the Realme C12 is battery life: this handset has a mammoth 6000 mAh battery which lasts up to three days with moderate use. Unfortunately, it does not support fast charging, but it supports reverse charging and it can be used as a power bank. With their 5000 mAh battery, POCO C3 and Infinix Hot 9 provide more or less the same battery life; none of them supports fast charging.

Price

POCO C3 is the most affordable with an Rs. 7,499 ($102) starting price, Infinix Hot 9 costs Rs. 8,499 ($115), and Realme C12 is priced at Rs. 8,999 ($123). My favorite device from this comparison is the Realme C12 because of its bigger battery. The Infinix Hot 9 has better cameras, but its chipset is too weaker, while the POCO C3 is just a Realme C12 with a smaller battery, but it carries a more affordable price.

At the moment, Xiaomi has a lot of last-generation entry-level handsets. There are so many devices that it is very hard for non-expert people to recognize which one is the best for their actual needs. That is the reason why we decided to publish a comparison between three entry-level phones by Xiaomi. The first is the POCO C3, while the others are Redmi phones: Redmi 9i and Redmi 9 Prime. You can find all of these devices in the Indian market at very affordable prices.

Design

While the front side is pretty much the same, POCO C3, Redmi 9i and Redmi 9 Prime have different back covers. All are built with plastic materials, but they have a different look. Given that it comes with just one camera, the Redmi 9i has a cleaner back, but the camera module of the POCO C3 remains small, even though it contains three sensors. The Redmi 9 Prime looks less elegant due to its bigger camera module including a fingerprint reader, but it has better color variants: as you can see in the render, it is available in gradient colors. Last but not least, Redmi 9 Prime has a water-repellent design.

Display

Do not expect a huge quality from these devices when it comes to the displays. Just like most of the entry-level phones, POCO C3 and Redmi 9i have a below-average HD+ resolution. But the Redmi 9 Prime has a Full HD+ panel and it is actually able to provide a higher definition, as well as a high brightness. Further, it has the Gorilla Glass 3 protection making the front panel sturdier. In each case, you get IPS panels with no astonishing color reproduction, but all of them are sufficient displays.

Specs & Software

Even when it comes to the hardware, Redmi 9 Prime wins the comparison. The reason is simple: it has a better chipset. We are talking about the Helio G80 by MediaTek, definitely superior to the Helio G35 found on the POCO C3. Further, it has more internal storage: up to 128 GB in the most expensive variant. The POCO C3 takes the silver medal with its Helio G35 paired with up to 4 GB of RAM. Redmi 9i loses with its Helio G25, but it runs MIUI 12 out of the box like the POCO C3, while Redmi 9 Prime is still based on the MIUI 11 as it is an older device.

Camera

The best camera phone of the trio is again the Redmi 9 Prime which sports a 13 MP quad camera paired with an 8 MP ultrawide sensor and a pair of sensors with 5 and 2 MP resolutions for macro and depth calculation. POCO C3 lowers the macro camera to 2 MP and lacks the ultrawide sensor, but it has the same main sensor as the Redmi 9 Prime. Even the Redmi 9i has the same 13 MP sensor, but it lacks secondary cameras. Redmi 9 Prime is also the best selfie phone thanks to an 8 MP snapper.

Battery

POCO C3, Redmi 9 Prime, and Redmi 9i all feature 5000 mAh batteries, but the Redmi 9 Prime has a shorter battery life because it has a display with a higher resolution. The battery king should be Redmi 9i because it has a display with lower brightness, but it naturally depends on the usage.

Price

Redmi 9i is priced at less than Rs. 10,000 ($130) in India, Redmi 9 Prime costs Rs. 10,299 ($140) in its base variant and POCO C3 is priced at Rs. 7,499 (appr. $103). While the POCO C3 provides the highest value for money, the Redmi 9 Prime wins this comparison thanks to its better display and cameras, as well as a stronger chipset.

Once a sub-brand of Xiaomi, it debuted with the legendary POCO F1 in 2018 but became inactive for the whole of 2019. However, it came back with the POCO X2 which was a rebranded version of Redmi K30 in China. Since then, the company has been borrowing a few models from Redmi and relaunching it under POCO branding. Amidst a lot of criticism, Deputy Director of POCO, Anuj Sharma has explained to Indian Express the reasons for rebranding devices.

First off, Anuj says the rebranded POCO phones are better versions of Redmi devices. And, offer more value for the money. While he didn’t exactly mention how better they are, we have to agree on the value preposition part. For instance, Redmi launched the Note 9 pro with an 18W adapter in-box but included 33W in the “Max” variant. However, POCO M2 Pro which is a rebranded Note 9 Pro included a 33W charger in-box. And a Z-axis vibration motor at the same price as Note 9 Pro(₹13,999).

Besides, Anuj believes that POCO is a new brand and hence, it is difficult to design and develop phones on its own. This gives a clear cut explanation of why POCO currently uses resources from Xiaomi like factories, services, and MIUI. Further, he says that other brands like realme, OnePlus have also launched rebranded devices in the past. He also quotes that devices like OnePlus One and Realme’s first smartphone were rebranded versions of Oppo devices.

He goes onto say that POCO will follow the same strategy in the future. Also, the company is in no mood to develop a software version on its own and will continue with Xiaomi’s MIUI. For the unaware, POCO currently has X, M, C, and flagship F series of devices. The budget X, M, C, has rebranded devices like POCO X2(Redmi K30 China), POCO M2 Pro(Redmi Note 9 Pro), POCO M2(Redmi 9), POCO C3(Redmi 9C China).

Up Next: POCO X3 NFC launching in Indonesia on October 15

Will the new handset from Xiaomi’s sub-brand conquer the entry-level segment or its competitor are too strong for it to stand a chance? We think there is no better way to find it out than comparing it with the best entry-level phones out there. Two very popular budget phones in India are Motorola Moto E7 Plus and Realme Narzo 10A, and they are popular because of their incredibly high value for money. Let’s see if POCO C3 can beat them.

Design

I like the design of the POCO C3: it is compact, minimalistic, and well-balanced. The handset is not too heavy and thick, despite it packs a huge battery. And it even comes with great build quality. However, the choice mostly depends on your tastes: all of these phones are made with a polycarbonate body and they are similar. You do not get better materials with any of these devices and they all come with a waterdrop notch. Note that POCO C3 does not feature a fingerprint scanner, unlike Motorola Moto E7 Plus and Realme Narzo 10A. This makes the device sleeker, but you have to renounce to that authentication method.

Display

The displays of these devices are pretty disappointing, but they are more than sufficient for average users. They are classic IPS panels with a below-average HD+ resolution. The Realme Narzo 10A looks more convincing because it has higher brightness, but it remains nothing special. While choosing among these devices, you should not focus on the display. Instead, look at the other specifications and make your own conclusions.

Specs & Software

The Snapdragon 460 chipset found on the Motorola Moto E7 Plus and the Helio G70 SoC found on the Realme Narzo 10A are pretty similar in terms of performances, but we believe most of the people would choose the Snapdragon 460 because it is built with a better production process and because it is a Qualcomm chipset. POCO C3 loses the hardware comparison because it sports a weaker Helio G35 chipset: still a good SoC even for gamers, but way inferior to Helio G70 and Snapdragon 460. These three handsets run Android 10 out of the box and feature up to 4 GB of RAM paired with up to 64 GB of eMMC internal storage.

Camera

Despite it has a lower amount of sensors on the rear side, the Motorola Moto E7 Plus is the best camera phone of the trio. It has a great 48 MP main sensor with a bright f/1.7 focal aperture as the main camera, paired with a 2 MP depth sensor. It even comes with a better 8 MP selfie camera (Realme Narzo 10A and POCO C3 have a 5 MP selfie snapper). The silver medal goes to the Realme Narzo 10A with its 12 MP f/1.8 main sensor paired with a 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. POCO C3 loses again.

Battery

Motorola Moto E7 Plus, Realme Narzo 10A, and POCO C3 have exactly the same battery capacity: 5000 mAh. We did not test all of them, but we can say the Motorola Moto E7 Plus may last more because it has a more efficient chipset built at 11 nm. However, we are probably talking about marginal differences.

Price

POCO C3 is priced just €86/$100 in India. Motorola Moto E7 Plus costs €150/$175 in the 4/64 GB, while Realme Narzo 10A 3/32 GB costs €130/$152. Due to its better cameras and great chipset, Motorola Moto E7 Plus wins the comparison. But with the POCO C3, you can save a lot of money while still getting a very good entry-level phone. Realme Narzo 10A sits in the middle: it is more affordable than Motorola Moto E7 Plus and inferior to the Moto E7 Plus, but it has better specifications than POCO C3.

The M2006C3MI model number is an Indian variant of the M2006C3MG model number that belongs to the Redmi 9C smartphone. Hence, it is highly likely that the POCO C3 will be debuting in India as a rebadged edition of the Redmi 9C.

POCO C3 specifications (Rumored)

The POCO C3 could be borrowing all its specs from the Redmi 9C. Hence, the POCO C3 could be coming with a 6.53-inch IPS LCD HD+ display with waterdrop notch. The Helio G35 chipset could be powering the device. It could be available 3 GB and 4 GB RAM variants and 32 GB and 64 Gb storage versions. It may sport a 5-mgeapixel front camera and a 13-megapixel + 5-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera setup. It could be arriving with a 5,000mAh battery with 10W charging support.

The handset’s name has been revealed along with its model number through its Bluetooth SIG certification. With Bluetooth certification in tow, the POCO C3 may go official as early as next month.

POCO India may have planned to launch smartphones across different price segments in India. The POCO X2 that debuted earlier this year has a starting price of Rs. 17,499 (~$234) in the country. The recently unveiled POCO M2 Pro begins at Rs. 13,999 (~$187)1. The upcoming POCO C3 could be priced under Rs. 10,000 (~$134). At present, POCO India is yet to reveal anything about the existence of the POCO C3.

The POCO C3 moniker can be seen in the Bluetooth certification that emerged today. It reveals that the POCO C3 has a model number of M2006C3MI. This model has already received approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The M2006C3MI model number appears to be a variant of the M2006C3MG model number that belongs to the global edition of the Redmi 9C. Hence, the POCO C3 is most likely to end up as a rebadged version of the Redmi 9C. The BIS certification is a good hint that the device is heading to India and its Bluetooth certifications suggest that its launch may not be far away.

Redmi 9C specifications

The Redmi 9C has a large IPS LCD panel of 6.53 inches. The waterdrop notch screen offers an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. The Helio G35 chipset powers the smartphone’s 2 GB and 3 GB RAM editions. It comes in storage editions such as 32 GB and 64 GB. The MIUI 12 based Android 10 OS runs on the device.

The Redmi 9C has a front camera of 5-megapixel. Its rear is fitted with a 13-megapixel + 5-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera system. The phone is backed by a 5,000mAh battery that comes with 10W charging support.
