Social media is largely centred around fan accounts for celebrities and idols, but one might argue that they are a bad idea for impersonation purposes because they blur the line between genuine representation and impersonation, leading to potential misunderstandings and harm. While fan accounts are created to show support and admiration for a public figure, they often mimic their style, content, and even usernames, which can mislead others into believing they are interacting with the actual person. This can result in misinformation, false expectations, and breaches of privacy, causing confusion and distress for both the public figure and their followers. Tech giant YouTube seems to align with the same policy since in a recent announcement, the company has stated that it will be more strict with fan accounts for the same reasons.

Simply adding “Fan Account” to the Channel name/description won’t be enough

Starting from August 21st, those who run fan accounts on YouTube will be required to clearly indicate that their channels are not affiliated with the original artist, creator, or brand. Merely adding “fan account” to the channel description will no longer suffice. These new guidelines are part of YouTube’s broader changes to combat impersonation on the platform. Channels that falsely claim to be fan accounts while copying another channel’s content or closely resembling them with slight name modifications will be prohibited. Additionally, users will not be allowed to pretend to be another person when leaving comments on videos or impersonating existing channels.

By enforcing these guidelines, YouTube aims to crack down on impersonators and safeguard its viewers. The platform hopes that these measures will prevent viewers from being misled by channels they interact with, ensuring clarity and transparency. Furthermore, creators will be protected from having their names and likeness misused for malicious purposes.

Huawei Technologies Founder, Ren Zhengfei, stated earlier today (9th February 2021) that it will be “extremely difficult” for the US to reverse its sanctions against the company, but he hopes the new Biden administration will bring a more “open policy.”

According to a Reuters report, the senior executive of the Chinese tech giant said that he hoped the new US President, Joe Biden, would keep the US business interests in mind while making new policies. The founder believes that it is “conducive” to the financial performance of US based companies that supply to Chinese corporations. Despite its struggling smartphone operations, Huawei still managed to see positive growth last year for both revenue and net profit.

Ren further added that “We hope the new administration will harbor an open policy for the benefit of the American firms and also the economic development of the US.” Furthermore, he said that he would also welcome a call from Biden. For those unaware, the previous US President, Donald Trump, added Huawei to the US trade blacklist, over national security concerns. Additional sanctions thereafter effectively hampered the company’s smartphone unit as well.

Due to the blacklist, the company could no longer procure goods or technology from US based firms. In other words, it now faced issues sourcing crucial components, especially after being cut off from its primary chip supplier TSMC. Ren believes it would still be “extremely difficult” for the brand to be taken off the entity list, but he continues to hope to buy “large volumes” of US made equipment and materials if the Biden administration allows it.

In an effort to counter restrictions on Chinese companies imposed by the United States government, China is reportedly planning to introduce new policies to boost the domestic semiconductor industry.

As per the report coming from Bloomberg News, citing sources aware of the matter, the Chinese government is preparing broad support for the third-generation semiconductors for the five years through 2025.

In the draft of China’s fourteenth five-year plan, the government has added measures to bolster research, education, and financing for the semiconductor industry. The plan is expected to be presented to the country’s top leaders in October.

The development comes after the United States tightened restrictions on Huawei and its subsidiaries globally, along with some other Chinese companies. With the new sanctions, Huawei has been restricted from procuring new chipsets from American companies or using American technology to making their own SoCs.

Soon after the restrictions were announced, TSMC, one of the world’s leading contract manufacturer and maker of Huawei’s Kirin chipsets, stopped taking new orders. As restrictions kick in from this month, the Chinese giant hinted that the upcoming Kirin 9000 could be the company’s last flagship chipset.

But it seems that Huawei is likely to keep making a budget to mid-range chipsets with support from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC). However, SMIC works on the 14nm node while the industry has shifted to 5nm process and companies are now working on developing the 3nm process.

While Chinese companies are not currently equipped to compete with the established players in the semiconductor industry when it comes to manufacturing but with the help of government policies and access to capital, it could be possible in the coming years.
