Huawei launched the HUAWEI Mate40 series in late October 2020. The PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate40 RS is the most expensive model in the lineup. Initially, the device only came in two storage configurations. A third variant was released in early May 2021. Two months later, the company has now quietly discontinued the first two versions.

The PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate40 RS debuted in two memory variants – 12GB + 256 and 12GB + 512GB in China. Internationally, it was only made available in 12GB + 512GB version.

A couple of months back in May, the company launched a new 8GB + 256GB variant for its home country. Since then, the two 12GB models have been mostly out of stock in the region.

Now, according to a Huawei-focussed tipster on Weibo, the company has discontinued the 12GB RAM variants of the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate40 RS. As per him, the firm will only sell the newly introduced 8GB + 256GB version going forward.

He asks people to purchase the new variant instead of waiting for the 12GB RAM model. He even criticizes the offline retailers and customer service for giving false hopes on the availability of the higher RAM variant in the future.

Interested customers can buy the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate40 RS with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage for  ¥10,999 ($1,701).

The non-availability of certain models and re-release of multiple premium smartphones with 4G chips clearly say that Huawei is severely affected by the US ban as well as the global semiconductor shortage. The company’s smartphone market share has been now occupied by OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi in China as well as global markets.

Before the downward spiral of Huawei‘s smartphone business, the tech giant had consistently partnered with Porsche Design to release customized luxury variants of its already premium flagship smartphones. Last year’s Mate 40 series also got an RS Porsche Design Edition but this model has been in short supply since its debut. Intending buyers usually have to make a reservation to buy it. In order to make it available to buyers, Huawei has launched a new variant of the Mate 40 RS Porsche Design.

The new variant comes in 8GB RAM + 256GB storage combo and is already on sale on Huawei Mall for 10,000 yuan (~$1,544). For reference, the top model comes with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. This top variant is still available but via reservations while the new 8GB RAM version is on open sale, of course, while stock lasts. It is available in two color options – ceramic black and ceramic white.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS features a high-strength nano-tech ceramic back that is described by Huawei as having a “diamond-like shine and a sapphire-like toughness”.  The design also sees the premium model packing an octagonal camera housing.

The Mate 40 RS shares specs with the Mate 40 Pro and this includes a 6.76-inch OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The phone adopts a pill-shaped punch hole located at the top left corner of the display. The front camera setup consists of a 13MP sensor and a 3D depth-sensing camera.

The flagship phone is powered by the Kirin 9000 chipset. For photography, there is a 50MP Ultravision main camera teaming up with a 20MP ultrawide Cine Camera, as well as a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS, and an 8MP SuperZoom Camera capable of 10x optical zoom and having OIS. The fifth sensor is a 3D depth-sensing camera with support for autofocus.

Keeping the lights on is a 4400mAh battery with 66W Wired Huawei SuperCharge and 50W Wireless Huawei SuperCharge support. The phone also comes with stereo speakers, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port. It runs on Android 10-based EMUI 11 from the go.

Like any other company, Huawei also files patents from time to time. According to a recent report, the company filed 8,607 wireless communication patents from January to October, making it the world’s number one in this category. Now, another report reveals a unique patent filed by Huawei related to temperature measurement on mobile devices.

As per Tianyan Check (via Sina Tech), Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. filed a design patent ( CN306175428S) titled ‘Mobile Phone with Graphical User Interface for Temperature Measurement and Display Results’ on March 31, 2020, and it was officially published on November 17.

The abstract for this patent’s document says that after measuring the temperature of a human or an object through the camera of a mobile phone or a tablet, the result of the measurement can be viewed on the device’s display itself.

If this sounds familiar, then you aren’t alone. Because Huawei has already launched two smartphones with this functionality. The first handset is the HONOR Play4 Pro Temperature Measurement Edition from the company’s then sub-brand. The second model is the recently launched ultra-premium PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate40 RS.

Both these handsets use an IR camera, which is capable of measuring temperatures ranging from -20°C and 100°C. And as the patent says, the results can be viewed on these smartphones themselves.

Hence, this patent does not reveal anything new except for the fact that Huawei has patented this technology and may use it in future devices as well.

Yesterday, Huawei officially unveiled the Mate40 series as its latest flagship smartphones for global markets. The phones were accompanied by a number of connected products as well as accessories. At the end of the event, the company announced that a dedicated China launch conference will be held on October 30 in Shanghai.

The HUAWEI Mate40 series global launch event was streamed on YouTube. At the same time, the official Weibo handle of the company shared pictures for its home audience. Once the event ended, the company revealed that a China-exclusive event will take place on October 30.

As we mentioned in the beginning, the Chinese telecom giant announced a number of products for international markets. However, two of them had already debuted in China in the month of August.

Huawei has partnered with Porsche Design to launch a special edition of the Mate 40. Called the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS, the phone shares some specs with the Mate 40 Pro series but also differs in its own way.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS has a high-strength nano-tech ceramic back which Huawei says has a “diamond-like shine and a sapphire-like toughness”. The stand out part of the design is the octagonal camera housing, and we won’t be surprised if we see other manufacturers copy the design in the near future. This is ceramic, so what you get is a glossy finish. There is no mention of an oleophobic coating, however, the white variant should be better at hiding smudges.

Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS Specs

The Porsche Design Huawei has a 6.76-inch OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. There is a pill-shaped punch hole in the top left corner of the screen that houses a 13MP primary camera and a 3D depth-sensing camera.

Under the hood is a Kirin 9000 processor with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It has a 50MP Ultravision main camera, a 20MP ultrawide Cine Camera, a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS, an 8MP SuperZoom Camera that brings 10x optical zoom and also has OIS, and a 3D depth-sensing camera support for autofocus.

There is a 4400mAh battery inside the phone with support for 66W Wired Huawei SuperCharge and 50W Wireless Huawei SuperCharge. The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS has stereo speakers, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, Wi-Fi 6, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port.

The phone runs EMUI 11 based on Android 10 out of the box.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS is priced at €2295. This is quite expensive and will take some serious convincing for buyers to choose this over other phones such as the foldable Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Huawei has confirmed to launch Mate40 series on October 22. The series is reported to include a total of four devices. A standard model and three Pro models including a limited edition. Now, as we are only days away front heir official announcement, all the colors and storage configurations of the Pro variants have leaked.
