<p>The news arrives from a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/apple-takes-62-premium-market-q1-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Counterpoint Research</em></a> report, which stated that the Cupertino based giant managed to acquire a massive market share of 62 percent in the global premium smartphone segment in Q1 2022. In other words, this means that the brand almost had a two thirds of the entire market under its belt. Typically, a premium smartphone is considered to be a handset that costs over 400 US Dollars. So two in every three devices sold above this price tag was an iPhone model.</p>
<p>Although, this also implies that some mid range phones like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-a53-5g/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Samsung Galaxy A53 5G</a> model was also included in this list. But despite the likes of the South Korean brands having an advantage for having a more diverse smartphone portfolio, Apple still managed to dominate the entire segment in the first quarter of this year. As of right now, the iPhone maker&#8217;s shares are up by 5 percent over last year. Back in 2021, the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> iPhone 12</a> series was also quite popular thanks to the lineup being the first 5G enabled iPhones.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-466963 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1.webp?x96852" alt="Apple" width="1600" height="1067" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1.webp 1600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1-768x512.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1-1068x712.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Final-PA-Header-Recovered-ai-1-630x420.webp 630w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>Interestingly, this also means that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-13" target="_blank" rel="noopener">iPhone 13</a> is currently the world&#8217;s best selling smartphone model, since it practically beat offerings from every other rival in the handset market by a large margin. Apart from this, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphone was the best selling premium Android smartphone in the market during this same period.</p>

<figure id="attachment_406023" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-406023" style="width: 1000px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-406023 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Honor-Magic-3-Pro-Plus.jpg?x96852" alt="Honor-Magic-3-Pro-Plus" width="1000" height="563" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Honor-Magic-3-Pro-Plus.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Honor-Magic-3-Pro-Plus-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Honor-Magic-3-Pro-Plus-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Honor-Magic-3-Pro-Plus-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Honor-Magic-3-Pro-Plus-746x420.jpg 746w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-406023" class="wp-caption-text">Magic 3 Pro+</figcaption></figure>
<p>Zhao Ming, CEO of the Chinese smartphone maker, made the statement during a press conference. He stated that the company managed to boost its market share in China from a historical low of 3 percent to 14.6 percent in just three months. This also enabled it to become one of the leading smartphone brands in its home market during this time. Back in July 2021, Zhao Ming had also stated that Honor will compete with the Cupertino based giant, with its products <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/06/17/honor-products-rival-or-surpass-apple-in-future-ceo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">rivaling or even surpassing Apple</a>.</p>
<p>The executive believes that the company will be even able to snatch market share from Apple in the high end smartphone market. Furthermore, the news also arrives as its former parent company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a> is witnessing a decline in the global and Chinese market. This has also led to various Chinese vendors launching their own high end flagship handsets to take advantage of the void left behind by Huawei.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-323891 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1733668.png?x96852" alt="Honor" width="600" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1733668.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1733668-300x200.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>Notably, the senior official also added that its not simply pursuing after market share alone and aims on investing in the market and its research and development to better compete in the global market as well. In other words, the company also aims n focusing on overseas market outside of China.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The South Korean smartphone maker was successful because of new product launches like the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s10-lite/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Galaxy S10 Lite</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">, Galaxy Note 10 Lite and the ultra-premium Galaxy S20 series. <p><span style="font-weight: 400">Additionally, the firm’s various discounts and cashback offers on the Galaxy S20 series also helped in boosting the sales. Samsung captured 34% of the total premium smartphone segment of India in Q1 2020.</span></p>

That is again amplified in the latest report by Counterpoint research which shows that the market for premium smartphones experienced an 8% decline globally during the first quarter of 2019. Bear in mind that premium smartphones are classified based on their prices ranging from $400 upwards.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/iphone-xr.png?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-222201" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/iphone-xr.png?x96852" alt="iPhone Xr" width="723" height="424" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/iphone-xr.png 723w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/iphone-xr-300x176.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px" /></a></p>
<p>US tech giant Apple still ranks as the number one premium smartphone manufacturer despite seeing a 20% drop in its rating year on year. Counterpoint says that one reason for the decline is that iPhone buyers are holding on to their iPhones for longer with the average period for changing phones increasing from 2 years to 3 years. This factor could also be linked to the average price of iPhones hitting the roof. Another reason for iPhone sales decline is the drastic drop in shipments in China. Notwithstanding, Apple raked in a 47% share of the market in Q1 2019.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/premium-phone-market.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-260246" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/premium-phone-market.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="727" height="408" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/premium-phone-market.jpg 727w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/premium-phone-market-300x168.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/premium-phone-market-696x391.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px" /></a></p>
<p>Samsung comes closely at the second spot with a 25% market share in the premium segment. Huawei is at the third spot with a 16% market share but could slip further down as a result of the US trade ban. OnePlus broke into the top 5 globally and in North America for the first time in Q1 2019.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK:</span> <a title="Kirin 810 outperforms Kirin 980, Helio P90, and Snapdragon 855 in AI Benchmark test" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/20/kirin-810-outperforms-kirin-980-helio-p90-and-snapdragon-855-in-ai-benchmark-test/" rel="bookmark">Kirin 810 outperforms Kirin 980, Helio P90, and Snapdragon 855 in AI Benchmark test</a></strong></p>
<p>Another interesting take away from the report is that the North America market still remains the largest market for premium phones with a 30% market share. China comes close with a 26% share of the market. However, the Chinese market was sluggish in the first quarter, which was the other major factor in the global slowdown.</p>
