Apple’s iPhone lineup is set to receive a major upgrade in the next few years, as rumors suggest that the company is planning to introduce high refresh rate displays and LTPO technology to its standard iPhone models. The move is expected to make the user experience smoother and more responsive.

According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, ProMotion technology, which was first introduced on the iPhone 13 Pro models in 2021, will expand to standard iPhone models in two years. This will allow the display to ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content, as well as ramping down to a more power-efficient refresh rate when necessary. This is expected to be made possible by the introduction of low-power LTPO display technology to standard iPhones in 2025.

While the iPhone 13 Pro models can ramp down to 10Hz, the iPhone 14 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that can show the Lock Screen’s clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked. The roadmap provided by Young suggests that the “iPhone 17” and “iPhone 17 Plus” will feature ProMotion and an always-on display too.

In addition to this, Apple is also expected to introduce under-screen Face ID and cameras in future iPhones, according to Young’s roadmap. The analyst has accurately leaked many display-related details about future Apple products, including ProMotion coming to the iPhone 13 Pro and MacBook Pro.

The introduction of high refresh rate displays and LTPO technology is expected to widen the gap between the standard and Pro versions of the iPhone. However, it is believed that Apple will eventually introduce these technologies to all its iPhone models, as it has done in the past with OLED technology and Dynamic Island.

While the standard version may not introduce LTPO technology until 2025, this move is a significant step forward for Apple’s iPhone lineup. The company has been under pressure from users and competitors alike to introduce high refresh rate displays, and this move is expected to be a major selling point for future iPhones.

According to various rumors, the iPhone 15 series is expected to follow a similar product launch strategy as the iPhone 14. While details are still uncertain, it seems that Apple is likely to stick with the same approach that worked well for them in the past. The latest Korean report suggests that the standard models in the iPhone 15 lineup (iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Plus) will not have the ProMotion and always-on display features that are exclusive to the Pro models.

The ProMotion feature, which adapts the display’s refresh rate to the content being displayed, provides a smoother and more responsive experience. This is achieved through the use of low-power display backlighting that supports refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. Unfortunately, it seems that only the Pro models will have the LPTO panels required for ProMotion, while the standard models will not.

Similarly, the always-on display option, which allows the Lock Screen to stay visible without significantly impacting battery life, will also be exclusive to the Pro models due to the 1Hz refresh rate capability of the updated LPTO panels. While this may be disappointing news for some users, the standard models will still feature a more power-efficient OLED display driver chip, which could contribute to longer battery life.

There have been reports of production scale constraints that may prevent Apple from bringing LPTO panels to the entire iPhone 15 series, with the company’s supplier BOE reportedly not having the production capacity for mass shipments of LTPO displays for high-end iPhones until 2024 at the earliest. However, all iPhone 15 models are expected to feature Dynamic Island, which could provide some relief for disappointed fans.

After launching the M1 chipset under Apple Silicon a couple of years back with the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro devices, the Cupertino-based tech giant is now gearing up to launch the second-generation processor based on ARM architecture.

There have been some reports about the M2 chipset powering the new MacBook series models and now another report has surfaced online that talks about the feature we can expect from the new M2-powered MacBook Pro.

In the Power On newsletter by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, it is claimed that the new entry-level MacBook Pro with the yet unannounced Apple M2 chipset won’t feature a ProMotion display that we saw on the recent 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

The report adds that the lack of ProMotion display on the upcoming entry-level MacBook Pro models is to differentiate it from the M1 Pro and M1 Max-powered models. Apart from the screen, the company could also compromise on storage.

It is expected to feature an LCD screen while the new MacBook Air powered by the M2 processor is said to come with a Mini LED display. This means that the device won’t have support for ProMotion or a variable 120Hz refresh rate.

Apart from the MacBook Pro, the upcoming Apple M2 chipset will refresh all the M1-powered devices, including the entry-level MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and a 24-inch iMac. While the launch date for these devices remains unknown, we expect to see a refreshed version of all of them by the end of this year.

The company also has a wide range of devices ready to launch this year and we are expecting to see Apple complete the transition from Intel to Apple Silicon for its Mac lineup.

The popular Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, widely known as PUBG, is going free-to-play for a week. Not just that, the game is also receiving a name change. As for the name change, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds will be known as “PUBG: Battlegrounds” going forward, which means the full name of the game is now officially Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlegrounds.

During this free-play week, rewards can be collected normally and the company has confirmed that mission progress and gameplay statistics will be recorded and put toward achievement progress if players wind up buying the full game.

It’s noteworthy that the promotion is only available on Steam, which means console players will not have access to it. Huawei has just announced that it will be launching a new specially designed promotional package on its mobile application platform, AppGallery. This promotion is to help bring the benefits of e-commerce and online retail to businesses and app developers during this time of crisis.

Almost since laptops hit the market many, many years ago, the preferred aspect ratio that manufacturers use is 16:9 or 16:10 in some cases. The company that disrupted the market and introduced a 3:2 display was Microsoft with the Surface Pro series, but few companies have revamped their PC lineup to follow Microsoft’s lead, which is really a shame, as it is a much more comfortable aspect ratio for an office productivity laptop.

Thankfully, smaller manufacturers seem to think otherwise as the Chinese manufacturer Chuwi chose to go with this format in their latest 2in1 laptop UBook Pro. The device will launch soon on Indiegogo crowdfunding platform featuring a 12.3″ display with a 3:2 aspect ratio.

This is a big course shift over the previous-gen UBook as Chuwi chose this aspect over their previously used 16:9 because they say it falls right in between 4:3 and 16:9, which are the two most common aspects in reading and media. In other words, they’re billing it as the best intermediate solution. Little black bars won’t be too distracting in video playback, but web pages, magazines and especially PDFs feel way more comfortable while reading or editing.

Even if smartphones are starting to increase the aspect ratio up to 21:9 as Sony did with the Xperia 1, the result is the same: besides the fact that it is convenient when watching videos in landscape mode, users want more vertical space when browsing webpages since more content is visible.

Compare that experience to reading a web page on a 16:9 screen with copious amounts of scrolling, and it is not hard to see the benefits. As a matter of fact, Sony does the same thing as Microsoft and Chuwi even if it’s not that obvious, as most tech sites focus on video playback.

The bottom line is it’s a pity that most laptop makers haven’t opted for the 3:2 aspect ratio. Video playback is something many users care about but mainly in media consuming devices like tablets and smartphones and less in laptops that for millions of users are a productivity tool. Laptops are used to read, write, remember, create, connect, and communicate and in this regard, Chuwi’s choice is totally justified.
