Black Friday is just around the corner, and gamers are gearing up for some attractive deals. With the Sony PlayStation 5 Pro recently hitting the shelves, many are wondering if the console is worth buying. Is the PS5 Pro a good deal right? Or should you go for other PlayStation consoles? Read on to find out.

Sony PS5 Pro

PS5 Pro: What does it offer?

The PS5 Pro is Sony’s latest addition to its console lineup and is also the most powerful gaming console ever. It is designed for gamers who want the best performance. While it appears quite similar to the base PlayStation 5, the PS5 Pro features an enhanced GPU for improved visual fidelity along with AI upscaling and superior ray tracing. The new AI Upscaling also enables gaming in 8K resolution.

Sony will exclusively release enhanced versions of various games like Alan Wake 2, Demon’s Soul 2, and The Last of US Part II Remastered to take advantage of higher horsepower. The company unveiled the PS5 Pro for 699.99 US Dollars, making it around 200 US Dollars more expensive than the regular PS5 model.

What’s the Black Friday Deal?

Considering how the PS5 Pro was just recently launched for the global market (except India), it was already unlikely that Sony would bring notable discounts for the new console. However, the EE online platform in the UK is offering a 40 pounds discount on the PS5 Pro. To recall, the console costs 699.99 Pounds Sterling in the UK, which already makes it more expensive than its US counterpart. But EE is also offering up to £260 trade-in value for old gaming consoles as well.

But is it worth buying? What’s the alternative?

The short answer is no. Sony’s PS5 Pro already seems pretty expensive on launch and none of these deals make it worth buying. However, there are plenty of alternatives to PlayStation 5 Pro. This includes the PS5 Slim, PS5 Disc Version, and PS5 Digital Edition. All three PS5 series models are already listed for under 500 US Dollars in the US market.

The Sony PS5 Slim is on sale for around 420 US Dollars along with other discounts, while the PS5 Digital Edition is officially listed on PlayStation Direct for just 374.99 US Dollars. This makes it a very attractive deal. You’re getting capable performance and access to Sony’s vast library of exclusive games. You’re really not missing out on much by skipping the PS5 Pro, so check out these older models first.

Back in September 2024, Sony officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro with enhanced performance and improved ray tracing. The brand’s latest gaming console just recently went on sale in several countries. However, it seems its Indian release might still be a while away. So here’s the surprising reason why the PS5 Pro’s launch was delayed in India.

India Misses out on Sony PS5 Pro Launch: Here’s Why

The Japanese tech giant has delayed the launch of the PS5 Pro due to a regulatory issue in India and various other countries. To recall. the PlayStation 5 Pro arrives with the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard (IEEE 802.11be). This new connectivity technology helps make download speeds faster, improving the online gaming experience overall. But this new tech operates in the 6GHz wireless band, which offers wider channels and less interference compared to its predecessors.

Sony PS5 Pro

Unfortunately, India and certain other countries have yet to approve this new WiFi standard. Due to this minor regulatory hurdle, Sony has pushed back the PS5 Pro launch. Unlike the global market, the launch of the latest PlayStation in India is not near. So until the Indian government approves Wi-Fi 7 technology, gamers in the region might have to buy the new console from abroad. This delay has disappointed fans and those eager to buy the new console.

Oddly enough, there are various smartphones that support WiFi 7, which launched in India. Although, these models only supported Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 6. Sony could follow a similar strategy to launch the PS5 Pro in India soon. As of right now, it is still unclear when the company will launch the PS5 Pro in India. The company has yet to make any official announcement, so stick around for more as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

The Nintendo Switch was one of the best selling consoles of all time that managed to outperform Sony’s PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (individually). But can the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 rival the new PlayStation 5 Pro? Read on to find out.

Nintendo Switch OLED

Nintendo Switch 2 vs PS5 Pro: Performance

On the performance front, it is unfair to compare a handheld console to a full fledged gaming console. The original Switch launched with the NVIDIA Tegra X1 chipset and was quite underpowered even for its time. From the PS4 and PS5, the Nintendo Switch can’t compete in terms of gaming performance.

Sony PS5 Pro

However, the Switch 2 is rumored to get a significant hardware upgrade, which might see it rival the PS4. If this is true, then it could be one of the most powerful handheld consoles in the market. Once again, the strength of the handheld consoles is their portability rather than performance, so let’s move to the aspect where they shine.

The Switch’s design is getting even better

One of the reasons why the Nintendo Switch was so successful was its form factor. Not only was it portable, but you could even dock it for a typical console gaming experience. Pair this with the removable JoyCon controllers and suddenly you have a party trick for gaming with friends, versatility in the way you play, and more. So it is no surprise that Nintendo is expected to improve this design with Magnetic JoyCons. That’s not all, the upgrades also extend to the display as well, with the Switch 2 reportedly featuring a taller 8-inch screen.

Exclusives sells consoles

If you’re a console gamer, you’d often hear that exclusives are what helps in selling consoles. Sony’s PlayStation beat Microsoft’s Xbox thanks to its wide variety of first party exclusive titles like God of War, Uncharted, and much more. However, recently these have started arriving on PC. This is great news for PC gamers, but this reduces the incentives for someone to opt for the PlayStation.

On the other hand, Nintendo has an iron grip on all of its exclusives. The company has developed legendary and iconic series like Mario, Legend of Zelda, and many others. It is easily one of the most recognizable and popular brands in the gaming industry.

What can we expect?

Sony is expected to have sold around 62 million copies of the PS5, with the PS5 Pro bringing this figure up slightly since it is a relatively new launch. But the first Switch has sold over 140 million units worldwide. So with the Switch 2, Nintendo just needs to refine the already successful formula and release next gen games that complement it. The handheld isn’t taking on the PS5 Pro in raw performance, but it can definitely rival it in gaming experience, exclusive titles, and sales numbers a couple of years down the road. Till then you can click here to check out our comparison with the Steam Deck.

Sony has finally launched the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro. This is the company’s mid cycle refresh and arrives as an upgraded PS5. The PlayStation 5 Pro is Sony’s latest gaming console, packing cutting edge hardware and innovative new technology. So here’s everything you need to know.

Sony PS5 Pro: What’s so special about it?

Sony announced the PS5 Pro for gamers and gaming creators that require more performance. The company is aiming to offer smoother frame rates, without compromising on graphical fidelity. In other words, some demanding titles will run at 60FPS with high graphics. This is thanks to an upgraded GPU as Sony promises 67 percent higher Compute Units and 28 percent faster memory than the standard PS5, which allows up to 45 percent faster rendering for smoother gameplay.

The brand has even made improvements to the ray tracing capabilities on the PS5 Pro with ray cast speeds doubling or tripling the base PS5. Sony is using AI to bring superior Image Upscaling. The PS5 Pro uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution and machine learning tech to enhance image clarity. Gamers often have to choose between performance or quality, and PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny wants to remove this toggle with the PS5 Pro.

Games Optimized for PS5 Pro

There are a bunch of titles that will get optimized for the PS5 Pro. So here’s a list:

Alan Wake 2

Assassin’s Creed: Shadows

Demon’s Souls

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Gran Turismo 7

Hogwarts Legacy

Horizon Forbidden West

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

The Crew Motorfest

The First Descendant

The Last of Us Part II Remastered

More games are also expected to get enhanced versions that can take advantage of the better performance of the PS5 Pro.

Pricing and Availability

Sony is set to launch the PS5 Pro starting from 7th November 2024 via leading retailer and its official website. Pre-orders will kick off on 26th September 2024. The console has starting price tag of 699.99 US Dollars and includes a DualSense wireless controller, 2TB SSD storage, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. There is also a disc-less version, with a Disc Drive sold separately.

Sony PS5 Pro May Arrive This Holiday Season

According to leaks from Gamescom 2024 via Wccftech, developers have already received specifications for the PS5 Pro, and many believe that Unreal Engine 5 will run significantly faster on this new hardware compared to the standard PS5. The Italian website Multiplayer also reported hearing from a developer who delayed their game due to the upcoming console.

Spec-wise, the PS5 Pro is rumored to deliver a 45% boost in rasterized rendering performance, achieved through a more powerful GPU and faster memory. This translates to smoother gameplay and more detailed visuals.

Ray tracing, which simulates realistic light behavior, is expected to see a significant enhancement on the PS5 Pro as well, potentially leading to more immersive and lifelike gaming experiences.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro is rumored to include a custom machine learning architecture capable of 300 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) of 8-bit computation. This will support Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology, which promises to improve image quality without adding extra strain on rendering performance.

While Sony hasn’t confirmed a release date, rumors suggest that the PS5 Pro might be unveiled in September and released in November, similar to the launch timeline of the PS4 Pro. The PS5 Pro is estimated to cost between $600 and $700.

As we await more official information from Sony, it’s clear that the PS5 Pro is shaping up to be a compelling option for gamers seeking a more powerful and feature-rich console.

A new gaming console from Sony is reportedly in the works. The PlayStation 5 Pro is the rumored model, which was recently sighted in a fresh report. The latest leak hints that the upcoming console could be a powerhouse in gaming, bringing in major upgrades in ray tracing and GPU performance. So here are all the details.

Sony PS5 Pro may get major upgrades in hardware

The news arrives from TheVerge who shared the “Trinity” codename of the upcoming Sony PS5 Pro. The report cites sources who claimed that Sony has begun asking developers to make their games compatible with the PS5 Pro. Leaked documents that the Trinity is a “high-end version” of the PlayStation 5. So this means that it’s a more powerful console compared to the PS5 Slim, which only offers a redesigned body.

It is unknown whether the brand might continue to sell the standard PS5 after the PS5 Pro drops. But based on what we know so far, the Pro model will offer a more powerful GPU and a marginally faster CPU mode. Thanks to upgrades in hardware, Sony could offer a 45 percent bump in performance over the base PS5. The document added that the gaming console will be capable of a “more powerful ray tracing architecture” as well.

Reportedly, the Ray Tracing on the PS5 Pro maybe three times faster than the base PS5. These improvements should include memory as well. The PS5 offers 448GB/s memory speeds, which could see a bump by up to 28 percent with 576GB/s. It seems like the brand has even started sending out PS5 Pro test kits to developers to make games that take advantage of the new more powerful console. Unfortunately, it is still unclear when Sony will unveil the PS5 Pro, so stick around for more updates.

The ninth generation console wars are continuing at full speed. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are fiercely competing to sell more consoles, games, and monthly subscriptions. However, time is ticking, and technology is advancing at an incredible pace. For instance, the Switch, released in 2017, is already quite outdated, and its successor is currently anticipated. And the situation is not much different on the PS5 front.

Despite being introduced in November 2020 and the absence of game releases like GTA VI, the device is already showing its age. A leaked revelation indicates that this is precisely why Sony is preparing to refresh its technology with an interim product. Here are the technical specifications of the PlayStation 5 Pro. Here are the details…

Sony’s Upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro Emerges in Leakes

With the announcement of GTA VI‘s release in 2025, the rumors about PlayStation 5 Pro have also increased. According to this, Sony aims to take advantage of the momentum behind the game, which will initially be exclusive to consoles, and therefore plans to unveil its new console at the end of 2024. Moreover, we have heard a lot about the device until now, including some technical details recently. Now, even more information has surfaced on a forum.

A new leak on the ResetEra forums has revealed supposed additional details and specifications for Sony’s upcoming PS5 Pro model, which is rumored to be unveiled in September 2024. The information comes from a user who claims to have obtained these details from reliable sources. Here are the key highlights of the leak:

Viola is fabbed on TSMC N4P.

GFX1115

Viola’s CPU is maintaining the zen2 architecture found in the existing PS5 for compatibility, but the frequency will once again be dynamic with a peak of 4.4GHz. 64 KB of L1 cache per core, 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of L3 shared (4 MB per CCX).

Viola’s die is 30WGPs when fully enabled, but it will only have 28WGPs (56 CUs) enabled for the silicon in retail PS5 Pro units.

Trinity is the culmination of three key technologies. Fast storage (hardware accelerated compression and decompression, already an existing key PS5 technology), accelerated ray tracing, and upscaling.

Architecture is RDNA3, but it’s taking ray tracing improvements from RDNA4. BVH traversal will be handled by dedicated RT hardware rather than fully relying on the shaders. It will also include thread reordering to reduce data and execution divergence, something akin to Ada Lovelace SER and Intel Arc’s TSU.

3584 shaders, 224 TMUs, and 96 ROPs.

16GB of 18 gbps GDDR6. 256-bit memory bus with 576 GB/s memory bandwidth.

The GPU frequency target is 2.0 GHz. This lands the dual-issue TFLOPs in the range of 28.67 TFLOPs peak (224 (TMUs) * 2 (operations, dual issue) * 2 (core clock)). 14.33 TFLOPs if we ignore the dual-issue factor.

50-60% rasterization uplift over Oberon and Oberon Plus, over twice the raw RT performance.

XDNA2 NPU will be featured for the purpose of accelerating Sony’s bespoke temporal machine learning upscaling technique. This will be one of the core focuses of the PS5 Pro, like we saw with checkboard rendering for the PS4 Pro. Temporally stable upscaled 4K output at higher than 30 FPS is the goal.

September 2024 reveal

Sony has been rumored to be working on a new console that will act as a mid-cycle hardware refresh for the PlayStation 5. So here are all the details.

Sony PS5 Pro Specs

In a recent report, we covered a new leaked video that showcased the design of the PlayStation 5 Slim. Initial rumors hinted at Sony is working on the PlayStation 5 Pro, but it was later rumored that the company will likely work on the PS6 rather than an upgraded version of the PS5. However, it appears that the Japanese tech giant is still working on a PS5 Pro based on a new report from RedGamingTech.

The YouTuber states that the PlayStation 5 Pro will arrive with a notable upgrade in terms of hardware. According to the report, the PS5 Pro will feature an APU that has a 3.6GHz CPU and 2.7GHz GPU. In comparison, the PS5’s CPU has a 3.5GHz clock speed and a 2.23GHz GPU. RedGamingTech speculates that the PS5 Pro will be capable of outputting roughly 23.04TFLOPS.

With these updates, it is possible for this upcoming console to offer true 60fps gaming at 4K resolution or improved 8K gaming with ray-tracing. Keep in mind that this is just speculation so take this report with a pinch of salt for now and stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

For those unaware, the Japanese tech giant was initially believed to be working on a PS5 Slim model. However, later reports claimed that the a higher end PlayStation 5 Pro model was also in the works. Following this, it was also rumored that the company might only be working on a Pro variant. Now, the latest information from a source close to the brand has revealed that Sony is focusing development on its next PlayStation model over a mid generation upgrade.

Based on its previous cycles, the company typically releases a new console variant from the same generation two years after its first launch like how the PS4 Pro and Slim arrived around two years after the base PS4. According to Tom Henderson, Sony is reconsidering its plans on making a hardware refresh for its PS5 series due to a lack of competition from Microsoft and its Xbox lineup. Despite the PS5 being nearly 3 years old, the company is also seeing a rise in sales thanks to its better stock of consoles in its inventory.

https://twitter.com/Tom_Henderson/status/1617628773662478338?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1617628773662478338%7Ctwgr%5Ebeb569d6f18fdba4be48a41a3273ad07ad02530e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.xfire.com%2Fsony-prioritizing-playstation-6-over-ps5-pro%2F

With the PS5 becoming more readily available, the brand is seeing robust sales. Due to shortages in the supply chain and increasing costs of raw materials, the PlayStation was one of the various consumer electronic products that faced production issues. Furthermore, Sony deciding to not offer a mid generation refresh makes sense since the upgrade likely won’t be worth buying a new console over the existing PS5.

Sony has been rumored to be working on a new PlayStation 5 model for sometime now. With the PS5 launching over 2 years ago, the company is in line with its cycle of launching a new variant of its existing game console lineup. So, the PlayStation 5 Pro‘s launch might be right around the corner.

According to a source close to the matter, the Japanese tech giant is planning on launching the PS5 Pro in the first half of this year. As of right now, the brand has yet to make any official requirement regarding the launch of the PS5 Pro console. Although, the source believes that the company is gearing up for an April 2023 launch. In other words, the PlayStation 5 Pro will be announced around two and a half years after the release of the original variant, which was unveiled at the end of 2020.

Furthermore, the source also claimed that the next gaming console from Sony will be the PS5 Pro and not the PS5 Slim that we had reported on previously. Being a higher end model, we can expect the console to offer improved performance thanks to upgraded specifications. This will likely arrive in the form of a new APU chipset from AMD and possible even slight changes in its design. The source did hint at one of the key changes, which is its thermal management system.

Reportedly, the company plans to place an emphasis on cooling, with one of PS5 Pro’s highlighting aspects being its liquid cooling technology. Meaning, the PS5 Pro could be watercooled rather than featuring the liquid metal compound that can be found in the original PS5 model. Interestingly enough, the company could be making this shift in cooling technology over the recent controversy surrounding the PS5 cooling failing and liquid metal leakage.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have reported on Sony working on a new PlayStation 5 Pro model, which would have been a refreshed model with bumped up specs. Now, a new report has revealed that the new console model isn’t too far away.

A new leak from known industry insider Tez2 claims that many developers have already started receiving the PS5 Pro devkits. If this news is true, it confirms the existence of the new game console. For those unaware, game studios typically get the devkit of new consoles ahead of the market for various reasons like better optimizations of existing games, or even the development of new titles based on improved hardware.

According to the tipster, the developers have been referring to the PS5 Pro devkits as the “kits of mid life upgrades.” Although, based on the PlayStation 5 devkits, we can expect the specifications of the PS5 Pro to also differ from the retail version that will be made available for consumers. Unfortunately, Tez2 did not reveal any other finer details like specifications regarding the upcoming gaming console model. But we can expect a more robust cooling system that helps keep the upgraded AMD APU’s thermals in check.

Based on these rumors, we can expect the PlayStation 5 Pro to launch sometime around mid to late 2024. This would be in line with the PS4 series, with the PS4 Pro launching around three years after the launch of the original variant. So, its likely that we’ll see a similar gap between the PS5 and PS5 Pro. So stick around for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

The news arrives from TweakTown (Via TomsGuide) who spotted the prototype on import records on the Sony’s shipping boxes of development kits that were being sent to the US. The Japanese tech giant is already rumored to also be working on a lighter model with a smaller heatsink, but now, it seems that a higher end version is also in development. The brand’s shipment reads “video game consol [sic.] (prototype),” which was dispatched from the UK to the UK.

It is still entirely possible that the shipment could be for an old prototype. But it is more likely that the company might be working on a refreshed model of the PS5. The new gaming console could even feature hardware upgrades or revisions. So it could be either a slim model with a smaller size or a Pro version with more powerful specifications. As of right now, it is more or less certain that a Slim version will launch sometime in the near future.

But, considering that Sony had launched a PS4 Pro with the last generation, it won’t be a surprise if the prototype in question is for the PlayStation 5 Pro. Keep in mind that this is still just speculation at the moment, so take this report with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.
