Several industry reports suggest rising component costs could complicate an early launch. While the PS6 has often been mentioned as a 2027 release, that window now appears less certain. A delay into 2028 or even 2029 is being discussed in supply-chain circles.

Memory pricing is at the center of it. Data centers are absorbing large volumes of DRAM and high-bandwidth memory, and that has had knock-on effects for other hardware categories.

The PS6 is rumored to feature roughly 30GB of fast memory. If those reports are accurate, even modest price shifts could materially affect overall manufacturing costs. Some analysts had pointed to noticeable price increases through late 2025 and early 2026. Whether that trend continues is unclear, but the volatility alone makes planning difficult.

Sony typically prices its consoles aggressively at the start of a generation, even if profitability comes later through software and services. If memory costs stay elevated, Sony would face a familiar but uncomfortable choice: accept slimmer margins or push the retail price higher. A $1,000 console would be a tough sell in the mainstream market.

Extending the PS5 cycle

At the same time, there’s no immediate urgency. The PlayStation 5 has reportedly surpassed 75 million units sold, and usage levels remain strong. The PS5 Pro’s arrival in late 2024 already refreshed the lineup, giving Sony more flexibility. From a business perspective, extending the current generation slightly may not carry much downside, especially if major software releases continue to anchor engagement.

Sony’s console generations have never followed a strict formula anyway. The PS3 launched six years after the PS2, while the PS4-to-PS5 gap stretched to seven. An eight- or nine-year span wouldn’t be typical, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented either.

Of course, semiconductor markets can shift quickly. If supply improves or pricing stabilizes, timelines could move again. For now, though, high memory costs combined with a still-healthy PS5 ecosystem make a later PS6 launch feel entirely possible.

According to hardware insider Kepler_L2, the next PlayStation could ship with 30GB of GDDR7 RAM. That’s higher than earlier speculation pointing toward 24GB, and noticeably above the 16GB found in the current-generation PlayStation 5.

Why 30GB is a big deal

The leak claims Sony may use ten 3GB GDDR7 modules, delivering up to 640 GB/s of bandwidth on a 160-bit bus. For context, the PS5 tops out at 448 GB/s. On paper, that’s a serious increase in memory throughput.

What does that actually translate to? Potentially:

Larger, more detailed game worlds

Heavier ray tracing workloads

More consistent 4K performance

Better AI-based upscaling techniques

Extra headroom for developers over a long console cycle

It’s also worth noting that other rumors have mentioned a new AMD APU, possibly based on future Zen 6 CPU cores and next-gen RDNA graphics. While those details are still speculative, the memory configuration would fit that kind of hardware ambition.

The cost problem

Here’s where things get complicated. GDDR7 isn’t cheap right now. Demand from AI infrastructure and data centers has tightened supply, and memory pricing has been volatile. If Sony really commits to 30GB of high-speed memory, that adds up quickly.

Some community discussions argue that 20GB might be enough, especially if it helps keep the console’s launch price under control. A more aggressive memory configuration could mean pushing past the $600 mark, maybe even closer to $700 depending on market conditions at launch.

Of course, Sony also has to think long term. A console typically needs to stay relevant for six to seven years. Cutting memory early might save money upfront, but it could limit performance toward the end of the generation. That’s likely the internal balancing act happening behind the scenes.

For now, this is just a leak. Manufacturing timelines floating around suggest a possible 2027 or 2028 release, which means plenty can change between now and then. Still, if the 30GB figure turns out to be accurate, it would signal that Sony is prioritizing longevity and technical headroom, even if that comes with pricing pressure.

A big leak that surfaced recently has suggested an interesting twist in Sony’s next-gen PlayStation strategy. Rather than chasing raw power like previous consoles, Sony appears to be emphasising low-power, efficient hardware that could possibly support a new PS6 variant that could go all in on handheld gaming. So here’s what the latest leaks reveal and what they could mean for the future of PlayStation gaming.

A new PS6 Portable?

Sony’s Low-Power Push

Recent leaks from hardware insider Moore’s Law Is Dead, and corroborating reports indicate that Sony has been urging developers to prioritise Low Power and Power Saver modes in the PlayStation 5 software development kit. The Power Saver mode is now included by default in PS5 dev tools, and it’s reportedly being treated as a higher priority than some PS5 Pro-specific optimisations. That suggests Sony might be laying the groundwork for hardware that runs at lower total power. All of this basically points to a portable console for a handheld gaming form.

According to leaked documentation, Sony is also encouraging studios to make games that can run on lower CPU configurations, possibly because future PS6 handheld hardware may not support as many high-power cores or threads as a full-fledged console like the PlayStation 5. Leaks claim developers are being asked to ensure games can run using eight CPU threads. In other words, an upcoming PlayStation might have limited horsepower to work with.

Moving towards handheld

We have recently seen a bunch of handheld gaming consoles drop in the market, like the new ASUS ROG Xbox Ally series. So the recent leak might be the latest competitor in the market. Furthermore, the power saving focus could imply that Sony wants games to maintain a target framerate by lowering resolution and load, rather than simply throttling physics or cutting frame rates.

This is what led to the speculations of Sony preparing developers to make games that scale better for gaming rigs with lower thermal and power budgets, like handhelds. Other leaks have also suggested that Sony may ship a device with four Zen 6c cores along with two low power cores for background processes. The new configuration wouldn’t make sense on a home console, but favors efficiency in a portable rig.

How does the regular PlayStation fit into the bigger picture?

Sony’s Power Saver focus is already showing up in updates, with support for Low Power modes being adding to existing titles and the PS5’s system software. So regular consoles like the PlayStation 5 or the upcoming PlayStation 6 might be for gamers who want to enjoy AAA titles with high graphical fidelity, while the low powered “PS6 Portable” might target players who want console-quality games on the go.

What This Could Mean for the Future of PlayStation

If these leaks are to be believed, Sony’s strategy might be a significant shift. The company appears to be redefining expectations around efficiency and optimisation. This mirrors broader industry trends, already seen in mobile gaming, where hardware doesn’t have to be the most powerful ever. In practical terms, this could mean a PS6 handheld that runs games at slightly lower resolutions or uses next-gen upscaling tech to hit framerate targets.

Talk of Sony’s next-generation PlayStation hardware has been circulating for months, and a new leak adds weight to the idea that a dedicated PS6 handheld is part of the plan. According to the latest claims, Sony is already pushing developers to design games around more constrained CPU configurations—an approach that strongly hints at a portable console alongside the standard PS6.

The information comes from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID), who says Sony has been advising studios to optimize games for systems with different CPU, GPU, and memory limits. This lines up with earlier rumors suggesting Sony is working on two PS6 variants: a traditional home console and a lower-power handheld designed for portable play.

MLID connects this strategy to recent changes on the PS5. Sony has been encouraging support for Low Power and Power Saver modes, with Power Saver Mode now included by default in the PS5 software development kit. According to MLID, these power-focused features are currently a higher priority than PS5 Pro-specific optimizations, suggesting Sony is laying groundwork for future compatibility.

One notable detail from the leak is a reported requirement for games to run on just eight CPU threads. The handheld is said to use four Zen 6c cores, providing those eight threads for gaming tasks, alongside two additional low-power cores for background processes. In contrast, the standard PS6 would use a more powerful CPU configuration.

A referenced internal document reportedly notes that “games may run in environments with different CPU configurations,” reinforcing the idea of a multi-console PS6 ecosystem. By setting these constraints early, Sony could ensure future games scale smoothly across both home and portable hardware.

The PS6 family is still years away, and Sony has made no official comments. Still, the SDK updates and optimization guidance suggest portable gaming is already a key consideration in Sony’s next-generation plans.

Leaked details suggest Sony’s PlayStation 6 (PS6) is further along in development than anticipated. According to leaker Kepler_L2 on the NeoGAF forums, the console’s system-on-chip (SoC) design is complete and in the pre-silicon validation phase, with the A0 tapeout scheduled for later this year. Simply put, this means Sony has finished designing the core processing chip and is now rigorously testing it virtually. Later this year, they plan to produce the first batch of these chips to see how they perform in real-world conditions.

Hardware Advancements

As per the leak, the PS6 is set to feature a semi-custom APU from AMD, manufactured by TSMC. This chip combines a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, both built on cutting-edge process nodes. Intel reportedly lost the bid to produce the PS6 processor to AMD in 2022. The Zen 5 CPU is expected to feature 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering significant performance gains over the Zen 2-based CPU in the PS5.

The UDNA GPU, previously referred to as RDNA 5, will utilize TSMC’s N3E process node. It is rumored to support advanced features like X3D cache technology, similar to AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D desktop processor, offering enhanced performance for gaming and computational tasks.

Gaming Capabilities

The PS6 is expected to improve the gaming experience with support for 4K at 120FPS and 8K at 60FPS, powered by a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU. The PS5 marked a significant performance jump over the PS4, boosting computing power from 1.84 teraflops to 10.3 teraflops. While the exact performance increase for the PS6 remains unclear, and native 4K resolution is not guaranteed, the console will likely utilize AI-based upscaling technologies to deliver high-quality visuals. Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is set for major upgrades, along with AMD’s upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution 5 (FSR 5).

For those unaware, the Japanese tech giant was initially believed to be working on a PS5 Slim model. However, later reports claimed that the a higher end PlayStation 5 Pro model was also in the works. Following this, it was also rumored that the company might only be working on a Pro variant. Now, the latest information from a source close to the brand has revealed that Sony is focusing development on its next PlayStation model over a mid generation upgrade.

Based on its previous cycles, the company typically releases a new console variant from the same generation two years after its first launch like how the PS4 Pro and Slim arrived around two years after the base PS4. According to Tom Henderson, Sony is reconsidering its plans on making a hardware refresh for its PS5 series due to a lack of competition from Microsoft and its Xbox lineup. Despite the PS5 being nearly 3 years old, the company is also seeing a rise in sales thanks to its better stock of consoles in its inventory.

With the PS5 becoming more readily available, the brand is seeing robust sales. Due to shortages in the supply chain and increasing costs of raw materials, the PlayStation was one of the various consumer electronic products that faced production issues. Furthermore, Sony deciding to not offer a mid generation refresh makes sense since the upgrade likely won’t be worth buying a new console over the existing PS5.
