Lately, we have been hearing a lot about the upcoming iPhone 14 series and it appears that the devices will come with some major changes which were expected to happen in the future iPhone models.

In the latest development, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, in his latest Power On newsletter, has claimed that the iPhone 14 series models won’t feature a notch for housing sensors. Instead, the phones will have a pill-shaped cutout on top of the screen.

Earlier, Apple had said that the notch was necessary for housing the sensors required for the front-facing camera as well as the Face ID feature. So, it will be interesting to see how the Cupertino-based tech giant manages to pack everything in a tiny space.

Prior to this new report from Mark Gurman, Korea-based publication The Elec had also claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will come with a punch-hole cutout on the screen instead of a notch. Even Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed about iPhone 14 models have a punch-hole cutout. These multiple reports about the same thing almost confirm this development.

Apple had first introduced the notch with the iPhone X and since then, it has largely remained unchanged. It houses the TrueDepth camera array which includes an infrared camera, a flood illuminator, a front camera, and a dot projector.

Reports also point that the Apple iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max will continue to offer the notch but the Pro models in the series will come with a new pill-shaped punch-hole cutout for housing the sensors.

Some rumors claim that the company may adopt a laser-based time-of-flight architecture for Face ID while other rumors indicate a unibody lens design that will help the company reduce the size of the front camera module.

A few years ago, with the launch of the iPhone X in 2017, Apple added a notch on top of the screen and it has continued so far, with the recently launched iPhone 13 models also featuring a notch. But the company is now expected to change that with upcoming phones.

If the new report coming from The Elec is to be believed, which is based on the display suppliers, then the upcoming iPhone 14 series models with OLED displays could have a punch-hole cutout instead of a notch.

The report claims that Samsung has already started receiving machines from Philoptics and Wonik IPS for laser-cutting holes in the OLED panels.

It is being said that Apple has decided to get rid of the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models as the company is confident about Samsung’s ability and expertise in hole punching for displays, which the South Korean giant has already been doing for years with the introduction of its own Galaxy S10 lineup.

If the report is true, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, featuring a 6.7-inch display with a punch-hole cutout could end up being the smartphone from Apple with the best screen-to-body ratio the company has ever designed.

The upcoming Apple iPhone 14 Pro models will be using Samsung’s HIAA (Hole-in-Active-Area) method which is said to be the most advanced OLED hole-punching technology so far. HIAA employs laser drilling between the OLED deposition and thin-film encapsulation (TFE) which is more challenging to do with Samsung‘s flexible OLED displays that use plastic instead of a glass substrate.

So far, Apple is dependent on Samsung Display for the OLED LTPO panels but LG is also reportedly working on the same but LG is yet to conduct trials that will determine if its production meets the needed quality and cost.

Samsung trademarked the Galaxy A52 along with other names back in January. After a while, the device, which will succeed the best-selling Galaxy A51, started slowly appearing on leaks. Today, Steve Hemmerstoffer(@onleaks) has shared some details of the upcoming smartphone.

According to Steve, Galaxy A52 5G‘s design will be a lot similar to the predecessor, Galaxy A51. Precisely, he says the device will have a 6.5-inch display with a centered punch-hole(Infinity-O). If you recall, both the Galaxy A51/A51 5G’s displays had the same size.

On the back, it will likely have the same rectangular camera layout with four sensors. A small difference here is the renders swaps the position of the fourth sensor and LED flashlight. For design, he says the company will retain the Glasstic(Plastic with Glass-like finish) rear panel and metallic frame. Besides, the concept render also shows a similar gradient Green color with a two-tone design(vertical stripes at the bottom).

However, if Steve were true, the Galaxy A52 5G will have a bit lesser thickness than the Galaxy A51. He says the device will measure 159.9 x 75.1 x 8.4mm where the thickness would be 10mm if you count the camera bump. To compare, Galaxy A51(4G) had 7.9mm, but the A51(5G) has about 8.9mm thickness.

Further, the device will likely retain the 3.5mm headphone jack and in-display fingerprint sensor as well. This suggests that the display will indeed be an AMOLED panel which was expected anyway. That said, he hasn’t given details on what SoC will power the device. But thanks to an early benchmark that hints at a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G SoC.

Samsung usually limits the Exynos SoC to regions like India, Korea, China while it brings the Qualcomm variants to the US. Hence, we can expect the same to be the case for Galaxy A52 as well. Anyway, earlier leaks say that the device will have a 64MP main camera supplied by its sister Samsung Electro-Mechanics.

Finally, Steve predicts a similar $499 price for the Galaxy A52 5G which we can agree with. This is because Samsung crawled back with the Galaxy A series and its mid-range pricing after a dismal Q1 sales of its Galaxy S20 series. And it looks like the company doesn’t want to change the winning formula going forward.

As we get closer to Snapdragon 875 launch, Xiaomi’s Mi 11 has managed to hit the radar of leaks frequently. The device is expected to be the first Snapdragon 875 device in China. And now, it looks like the Mi 11 will likely feature a punch-hole screen with curved edges on all sides.

The latest tip comes from Digital Chat Station on Weibo who hints(via Sina Technology) that Xiaomi Mi 11 could sport a four-sided curved display and retain the punch-hole. Precisely, the Mi 11 is likely to feature the small punch-hole cutout at the top left corner of the screen. However, we aren’t aware of the front camera specs just yet.

If we recall, Xiaomi’s 2020’s flagships like Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro 5G, and Mi 10 Ultra all have dual-curved screens on the longer sides. On the contrary, rivals like Samsung, OnePlus have been moving away from curved screens due to various reasons. Besides, the curved screens might have some use-case scenarios like edge-edge content viewing, a more attractive look. And smooth swipes from the edges but there’s are a few Cons too.

That is, there is always the risk of durability, accidental palm touches, and a few others. Hence, it will be interesting to see how Xiaomi markets the all-curved display. That said, this tip pretty much shows that prior reports by a few were wrong as they mistook leaked images of the alleged Vivo X60 series for Mi 11.

Anyway, it looks like the Mi 11 will have a revamped design compared to the predecessor. Although we aren’t sure how many models the iteration will have, it is likely to have upgraded internals like Snapdragon 875 SoC, 48MP ultra-wide camera with 0.8μm pixel size, improved stabilization, and more.

So far, we don’t have an exact launch date but we feel that the device might break cover anytime soon. That is because Mi 10 recently went out of stock. And Xiaomi officially discontinued the Mi 10 Pro in China suggesting a new launch in the near future.
