Apple is gearing up to launch the upcoming iPhone 14 series smartphones in which the Pro models will come with a revamped design that will see the company adopting the pill-and-hole cutout for the front-facing camera.

Now, a new report coming from analyst Ross Young claims that Apple will fully adopt the new pill-and-hole cutout design for the front panel of next year’s Apple iPhone 15 series.

If the report is to be believed, then unlike this year’s iPhone 14 lineup, the new design won’t be limited to Pro models, but all the models in the iPhone 15 series will have pill-and-hole cutout instead of a notch. The non-Pro iPhone 14 models launching this year will continue to have a notch on top of the screen.

In the new design of the phone’s front panel, the pill-shaped cutout is for the Face ID sensors, while the hole is for housing the front-facing camera.

Eventually, the Cupertino-based technology giant will move the Face ID sensors and the front-facing camera lens under the display. As per the report, if everything goes according to the company’s plan, then the move to shift components under the screen could start happening with iPhone 16 models coming in 2024.

The Apple iPhone 14 series, which will have four models, will be the first in the lineup to have significantly different specifications and features for the non-Pro and Pro versions.

Vivo is buckling up to launch the Vivo X60 series of Smartphones in China. Although the Chinese giant hasn’t really stood firm on a launch date yet, it could be on December 28. In the run-up to the official reveal, an unboxing video has now joined the train of Vivo X60 Pro leaks.

A YouTube user has uploaded a short unboxing video of the upcoming Vivo X60 Pro. The video opens up to the retail packaging that looks a lot like the Vivo X60’s retail box we saw a few days back. It appears to have a Dark bluish color with a Vivo X60 Pro written on it.

Opening it up reveals the device itself. The device has a Gray rear panel with a rectangular camera layout up top and Vivo branding at the bottom. Speaking of which, the layout, as seen in some of the official renders, has the quad-camera setup. Three of the lenses are arranged like a triangle while the fourth periscope lens sits at the bottom beside the ZEISS logo.

There is an LED flashlight at the tail end(vertically) of the rear camera stack. Turning it up, we see the power and volume buttons to the right, and the curved screen with centered punch-hole upfront. We must admit that Vivo’s curved screens have come a long way(eg. 120-degree curves on Apex 2020). And it looks like the X60 series’s curves feature subtle curves like Samsung‘s devices.

At the bottom, we see that the device has a microphone, USB-C port, speaker grille, and SIM card tray. It’s worth noting that the unit that’s being unboxed here also has a ‘PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY’ slogan and a secondary mic at the top.

The next exciting part here is the UI of the device. As the user unlocks it, we are greeted with the new OriginOS. If you recall, the company unveiled the new UI based on Android 11 on November 18. It’s now almost certain that the X60 series will debut with the new UI corroborating with the earlier leak.

Anyway, the X60 series will mostly include two devices- X60, X60 Pro. However, there’s also a possibility of an X60 Pro+ with Snapdragon 888 SoC. Other than that, the rest of the devices will have an AMOLED 120Hz display, Exynos 1080 SoC, triple cameras(X60) with X60 Pro having an additional 8MP periscope lens, 33W fast charging, and more.

Ever since the Huawei Nova 8 launch date was announced, we have been coming across a lot of leaks. In the run-up to the December 23 event, it looks like everything about the device will probably be revealed. A recent leak shares the real-life images of the Nova 8 non-Pro in Green color.

As reported by ITHome, tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed the real-life image of the Huawei Nova 8 smartphone. Accordingly, the Nova 8 will have a 6.57-inch FHD+ OLED display. The display will have a refresh rate of 90Hz and probably a 2560×1080 pixel resolution. Interestingly, a live image shared by him shows a single punch-hole screen.

This leak corroborates the early report on specifications which said Nova 8 will have a 90Hz OLED screen with 1 billion colors. Anyway, a new report by ITHome shares additional images of the Nova 8. It shows the rear of Nova 8 having a Green color with an oval-shaped camera module.

Earlier today, a leaked render showed a similar module that goes well with this leak. The module has an LED flashlight and four sensors out of which the first one is pretty large. As you can see below, it has a white ring around it, and “AI QUAD CAMERA”, “ULTRA HD SENSOR” slogans surround it. Also, there is a ‘nova’ branding and Huawei logo at the bottom.

Nova 8, 8 Pro Camera Specifications(Expected)

Besides, the tipster says that the punch-hole on Nova 8 is about 4mm and the same as that of Huawei Mate40. However, the difference here is the punch-hole is moved to the center instead of the top-left position on the latter. Plus, it also confirms that Nova 8 series will have two devices.

This is because the previously leaked poster showed a device with a dual punch-hole screen which is likely Nova 8 Pro with dual cameras. Speaking of which, the Nova 8 series’ camera specifications will almost be similar unlike the predecessor, Nova 7 and 7 Pro. At the back, both the devices will have a 64MP main, 8MP ultra-wide, two 2MP sensors(likely macro, depth).

On the other hand, the Nova8 will have a single 32MP selfie shooter whereas the Nova 8 Pro will have dual 32MP and 16MP sensors. Other alleged specifications include a Kirin 985 SoC, 66W SuperCharge technology, and a rumored starting price of 3,000 yuan($458) for Nova 8, and 4,000 yuan($611) for 8 Pro. Let’s wait for the official launch to know more.

It’s not uncommon for OnePlus’ flagships to be on the radar of leaks before the launch. Recently, the company made the next flagship for 2021 official at the Qualcomm event. Although it didn’t reveal the names, going by the numbers, it probably will be the OnePlus 9 series along with a new 9E. Today, Phonearena brings us the first-ever hands-on real-life image of the non-Pro variant.

Citing anonymous sources, the report shows various images of what is reportedly a pre-production unit. Claimed to be the OnePlus 9 5G, the report has been supported by tipsters like Max Jambor as well. First off, the model number of the device is LE2117 which is contradictory to the earlier leaks that said it could be of the OnePlus 9 Pro. Next, the images show a device who’s rear panel has silver color.

Besides, the camera module on the device is similar to the earlier CAD renders having triple-cameras two large sensors, and a smaller one. There’s an LED flash beside the strip of cameras similar to OPPO’s Reno series of devices(Eg. Reno4 Pro). The rounded-rectangular layout also has a ‘ULTRASHOT’ written on it and the rear-panel logo isn’t of OnePlus.

Upfront, as you can see above, the device has a top-left punch-hole display. In addition to claiming it similar to the OnePlus 8T, the report says that it’s a 6.55-inch FHD+ flat display. It supports HDR, has a refresh rate of 120Hz, a resolution of 2400×1080, and 20:9 aspect ratio. What follows is a series of images to reveal the microphones(Top, bottom), SIM card tray, Type-C port, and Speaker( at bottom), along with the boot logo.

If the images along with the report turns is true, the device will have a metal frame made of Aluminum and have the ports and buttons at usual placements. Anyway, apart from looks, the report also shows some screenshots of its internals. Apparently, the LE2117 device has a board Lahaina (which hints at Snapdragon 888), has 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, and runs Android 11.

The screenshots also include details like the 12MP f/1.88 rear camera and 4MP f/2.4 front camera. However, it could either be an error listing or indicate the actual output of the quad-Bayer 48MP, 16MP sensors respectively. Apart from this, earlier leaks say that the OnePlus 9 mostly won’t have an IP rating, unlike the Pro variant.

In an attempt to increase the screen size and to keep up with the bezel-less design trend started off by Essential Phone and iPhone X, smartphone OEMs have adopted the notched-display design for the past few years. The trend seems to be nearing its end as punch-hole design continues to gain ground.

Display notches are essentially a cut-out, at the top, of a part of the smartphone’s display.  With display notches, smartphone OEMs are able to provide maximum screen space without abandoning the critical hardware at the top, such as the Selfie Camera, Receiver Speaker, other Sensor, LED Indicators. However, the design style has often come under criticism for distorting the display symmetry of the phones but that did not stop the rapid rise of the design. In less than 4 years after its adoption, the steady shift to punch-hole design has come under scrutiny. Realme‘s product director Wang Wei Derek offered some reasons why OEMs seem to be shifting to punch-hole design.

Mr Wang stated that one of the reasons for the shift is aesthetic fatigue of the waterdrop notch by users and manufacturers alike. In other words, we all are getting tired of the design style. Thus, the change in design pattern is a way of attracting users’ attention and improve market competitiveness.

Another reason he adduced is the popularity of the pop-up camera design among users who love to have that immersive full-screen design unobstructed by a notch of any sort. However, the punch-hole design is the closest and cheapest way to achieve the notch-less design without using a pop-up camera design. Manufacturers have to think of an alternative based on the cost of pop-up design and need for 5G phones with demand for a big battery.

In case you are at a fix why most of the punch-hole designs aren’t a single-hole design, Wang suggested what OEMs consider before going for a wide or single punch-hole.
1. Function-oriented: The purpose is nothing more than improving the user’s functional experience, such as adding a wide-angle camera to enhance the group selfie shooting experience. The design also allows for the adding of smart sensors to assist in the smart operation of mobile phones. Also, a Bokeh camera could also be added to give blur effects to selfies among other reasons.
2. Appearance-oriented: In terms of appearance, the single punch-hole design is usually more visually appealing. No doubt about this but some features have to be sacrificed like a powerful selfie camera.

With the current pace, most of the smartphones next year will likely have the punch-hole design, especially as OLED punch-hole displays are not being supplied by Chinese display manufacturers. Do you agree? Let us know what you think in the comment section.

Huawei’s high-end MatePad tablet will officially launch on November 25. A few days before its official release, Huawei has confirmed that the MatePad will come with a stylus as well. We don’t have any information on this stylus, however, it is likely that it is announced as an upgraded version of the MatePen stylus that was unveiled back in 2016 alongside the original MateBook 2-in-1.

Huawei’s new MatePad tablet is likely going to be targeted at the high-end market. Apart from a stylus, previous renders reveal that the tablet will feature a large iPad Pro-esque display with a punch-hole camera on the top left corner. The MatePad could very well be the first punch-hole tablet in the market. The bezels around the display also look pretty thin from the renders. At the back, there should be dual cameras while inside, you should get a powerful chip like the Kirin 990. Other expected features include 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a pogo pin connector for keyboard attachments, and a large battery.

Since the MatePad is going to be marketed as a high-end tablet, expect it to retail at a premium price tag. Unfortunately, we don’t have any ideas about its pricing as of yet.

The punch hole design first surfaced late last year. Expected to be the trend this year, most manufacturers have stuck to notches and pop-up selfie cameras. Most of the phones with a punch-hole display have been from the same manufacturers that pioneered the design and they are Huawei and Samsung. However, 2020 may actually be the year of the punch hole as more manufacturers will be adopting the design. ZTE may be among the adopters too but their design is unlike any we have seen.

A patent filed by the company at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in April 2019 was published a few days ago. The patent which is for a “display panel, camera device, terminal, and screen manufacturing method” describes a phone with a really small punch hole camera.

The size of the hole isn’t the interesting part but where it is located. Rather than placing it in the middle of the screen or in the corner as we have seen on the Galaxy Note 10 and Huawei Nova 5i respectively, the punch hole is nestled between the network and battery icons at the top of the screen. You can still say it is positioned in the corner but it is different since the hole is smaller and the icons flanking it on each side make it less noticeable.

LetsGoDigital has created renders based on the patent description to give us an idea of the design but the final product may be different.

The punch hole design isn’t the only thing about the patent. The description also mentions the phone will not have a traditional earpiece but will use Sound-on-Display technology. We have seen this technology appear on a number of phones such as the LG G8 ThinQ and the Galaxy A80. This technology vibrates the display to transmit sound and allows for a more full-screen device.

The Axon 10 Pro is ZTE’s flagship for 2019. It has an affordable price tag that made it a contender for the “flagship killer” title when it launched, runs near-stock Android on the international version, has a curved AMOLED display, triple cameras with optical zoom and support for wireless charging. We expect its successor will come with better features and hope it retains its affordable price tag.

Elephone is being very daring this year with many models adopting the newest available technologies like a pop-up camera or punch-hole camera. We already know about Elephone U2 that integrates a pop-up selfie camera so now it is time to see what the Chinese manufacturer has planned for the punch-hole camera model.

The Elephone A7H was demoed at the Hong Kong Global Sources Mobile Electronics Show two months ago and the information they gave was that it will come with a 6,41″ HD+ punch-hole display, and Helio P23 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

On the camera front, the company had then informed us about a dual rear camera but as you can see in the video and photos, it has been upgraded to a triple rear camera. The rest of the info talk about an 8MP selfie while the battery will probably have 3900mAh capacity. It is expected to hit the market in August so we expect more details to surface soon. The Korean giant, Samsung, has already stepped into the new era of smartphones by announcing a foldable device last month. Samsung has also announced its Galaxy S series flagship devices such as Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e. It’s been only a few days since the device has hit the shelves, and the renders of its upcoming Galaxy Note 10 has started surfacing on the web. Recently, guys over at PhoneArena designed concept renders of Galaxy Note 10 by considering current leaked specs and other design details.

As of now, Samsung has no definite plans of when they will announce the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. However, on the basis of leaks and other theoretical information available, new concept renders are here showcasing the design of Note 10. PhoneArena has managed to develop near-possible renders of it resembling the recently launched Galaxy S10 device. Last year, Note 9 also carried similar aspects as the Galaxy S9.

While looking at the Note 9 concept renders, it is quite difficult to ignore its huge Quad camera module on the rear side along with a flash and other sensors. The shape of the whole camera module is horizontal with little round edges. The concept is derived from rumors which state that it will feature a quad camera setup as like of Galaxy S10. To recall, Galaxy S10 carries a 12MP standard camera, 12 MP telephoto lens, a 16 MP wide-angle shooter and a 3D ToF camera sensor.

On the front, its Infinity-O display taken from Galaxy S10 can be seen with a punch hole featuring dual front cameras. In display cameras are still not available. So we need to wait for some more years for that kind of advancement to take place. Until then, we can’t have a true bezel-less display device, unless you are okay with pop up cameras. Currently, the source is not entirely confident about the size or shape of the punch hole.

Samsung introduced Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor with Galaxy S10 launch. The same kind of fitting is present in the renders. In reality, we believe Galaxy Note 10 will also use this new technology. Unlike Optical fingerprint sensors, Ultrasonics are faster and more reliable. It’s extremely likely that Note 10 will also feature black shaded top right corner wallpapers to hide punch hole as the Galaxy S10.

If we go with the renders, then Galaxy Note 10 repair is also going to be expensive as like iFixit revealed yesterday for Galaxy S10 devices.

OPPO has been consistently offering higher screen space on its R-series of smartphones. The OPPO R11 that was unveiled in June 2017 came with 16:9 display and its upgraded version R11s was launched with 18:9 screen later in the same year.  OPPO switched to notched displays for the R15 series that were unveiled in Q1 last year. The R17 series launched later last year came with waterdrop notched screens. Hence, it is very likely that the upcoming R19 will either feature a punch-hole display like the Samsung Galaxy A8s or Honor View 20. Recently, OPPO had filed for two patents with title “Mobile phone with app icon interface” which is nothing but a punch-hole display with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The display design reveals the presence of a selfie camera on the top-left corner of the display. The camera app overlays the selfie camera and next it is four other apps. Swiping to the right of the camera will reveal those other apps, but the camera icon will always remain at the same place.

The rear design of the phone has antenna bands placed on the top and bottom edges of the back panel. A horizontal dual camera setup with LED flash is placed at the top-left of the rear shell. A fingerprint scanner is also available on the backside of the phone. The bottom edge of the phone has external speaker, a charging port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Will the upcoming OPPO R19 sport the new punch-hole display design? There is no concrete evidence available yet. A recent report had revealed that the company may use a notch-less screen like the OPPO Find X for the OPPO R19. The smartphone is speculated to be equipped with a pop-up selfie camera. The backside of the phone could be either featuring a dual or triple camera module. Like the predecessor model, the R19 may feature an under-display fingerprint scanner.
