As for the market share, the Cupertino-based tech giant is controlling 35.6 percent of the wearable market in Europe. The second spot is reserved by Samsung with a 16.1 percent market share, selling over 3.5 million devices.

Chinese companies Xiaomi, Huawei, and Huami make up the top five wearable brands in the continent. The report also adds that Xiaomi has managed to sell 2.5 million devices in the first quarter of this year.

The IDC report also reveals that the earwear products account for the biggest share in 2020, with over 50.1 million units sold last year in this category. Now, as for the smartwatches, over 23.4 million units were sold last year, with the popular Apple Watches leading the category.

Apple Watches accounted for 31.2 percent market share, reaching 6.9 million units, representing a growth of 51.2 Year-on-Year. While WatchOS has surpassed market expectations, the price cut of Watch Series 3 and Watch SE led to stronger sales.

Earlier, we had reported on the iPhone 12 series accounted for the highest sales number and revenue in the entire market. Linda Sui, Senior Director, at Strategy Analytics stated that “Apple and Samsung remain clear front runners in revenue terms but competition among the chasing pack is intense. Vivo surpassed Huawei and nudged up to the third place this quarter, for the first time ever.”

Similarly, Senior Analyst Yiwen Wu also added that “The global smartphone market is remarkable with 25% of revenue coming from super premium devices with wholesale prices above $900. Apple and Samsung dominate these hugely profitable segments. Vivo has seen success and is ranked first in the $400 to $499 wholesale band, while Oppo led in the US$191 to $299 range in Q1 2021. Transsion maintained the leadership in entry tier (US$36 to $99) this quarter.”

While Samsung and Apple dominated the market, Chinese smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and others also fought over market share. The overall revenue during this period also reached a new record high for this quarter.

OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi have emerged as the leading smartphone brands in China as these companies had a stockpile of chipsets and components because of which there were no issues with the production of their devices amid the global shortage of components.

Huawei, which had been ruling the Chinese smartphone market continues to see a decline in its market share. Honor, which spun off into an independent company earlier this year, doesn’t have significant numbers in sales to become a mainstream brand in China.

The top five smartphone brands in China — OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Apple accounted for 91.8 percent market share in the first quarter. If Honor is included in the mix, which comes in at a sixth place, then the total market share amounts to 98 percent.

While the first quarter of 2021 saw an increase in shipments for smartphone brands in China, the report is forecasting a decline of 19.3 percent for the second quarter, mainly due to the shortage of required components.

As for the global markets, a report from Canalys reveals that smartphone sales increased by 27 percent in Q1 2021, reaching 347 million units. The top five smartphone companies during the first quarter are Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo respectively.

The results show a general rebound in several aspects of Samsung businesses. There was an 18% improvement in sales of smartphones, TVs, and household gadgets over the past year, which therefore drove operating profits up. The company will also pursue rapid deployment of premium 5G wireless smartphones and secure profitability by significantly reducing the shocks and disruptions occasioned by demand and supply glitches in its production lines.

The outlook for the year remains a mixed bag of uncertainty and promise and the company hopes to continue its growth trajectory by expanding sales of innovative products that are the outcome of a well-researched market demand template. Samsung continues to pursue research that will help it maintain its competitive edge in the tech firmament. The company says it is planning to strengthen its leadership and promote sustainable growth by scaling up the production and sales of lifestyle products and high value-added premium products while remaining highly responsive to market changes.

Samsung Electronics continues to expand its business model in various dimensions. Its consumer electronics arm continues to pursue custom-made home appliances with greater appeal to its teeming consumers across the world. The chipmaking arm of the company is also experiencing massive expansion, as the company lends itself to trying to reverse the global chip shortage, by putting plans afoot to establish new chipmaking plants in the US or South Korea. Samsung remains a strong tech brand with its hand into several segments of the tech ecosystem including consumer electronics, network infrastructure, mobile, display, chipmaking among several others.

Shipments have reached about 340 million units in total, marking a growth of 24 percent year on year with Samsung leading the industry in terms of shipments.

According to BusinessWire, a Strategy Analytics report revealed that the industry has seen an immense rise in shipments in Q1 2021, which is the highest growth since 2015. This is likely due to the pent up demand following 2020, with the market rebounding along with the 5G handset market seeing an impressive growth thanks to Chinese manufacturers. Linda Sui, Senior Director, at Strategy Analytics stated that “China smartphone shipments were up +35% YoY reaching 94 million units in Q1 2021. Globally, the top five vendors combined took a 76% market share in Q1 2021, up from 71% one year ago.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, also added that “Samsung remains the largest vendor shipping 77 million smartphones globally in the first quarter, growing +32% YoY from 58 million units in Q1 2020. Samsung’s newly launched more affordable A series 4G and 5G phones, and the earlier launched Galaxy S21 series combined drove solid performance in the quarter. Apple shipped 57 million units iPhones worldwide, capturing second place with a 17% volume market share. The strong momentum behind the 5G iPhone 12 series continued across multiple markets.”

This news arrives amid a global shortage of semiconductors, which has affected various industries across the world. Although, the shortage of chips did not impact the smartphone market during the first quarter of this year. Furthermore, the top 5 vendors accounted for 76 percent of the global market share during the same period, which is also up from 71 percent from last year.

The release of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series seems to have helped the company achieve its goal.

According to the report, Samsung likely saw a jump of 45 percent during the months of January to March, i.e. Q1 2021, thanks to the robust sales of the company’s smartphones and home appliances.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are not spending more time at home and this has resulted in the demand surge for a wide range of high-margin consumer electronics products, helping the company increase revenue.

The demand is so high that it has created a global shortage of chips and other components. However, the company registered a decline in the earnings for the chip division mainly because of the storm that suspended production at its plant in the United States.

The Reuters report, citing several analysts claims that the operating profit for the South Korean tech giant in the quarter is expected to have climbed to 9.3 trillion won, which is approximately $8.2 billion. This would mark Samsung’s highest operating income level for the first quarter since 2018.

Samsung is estimated to have cornered roughly 23% of the global market in the quarter, thanks to that launch and cheaper-than-usual pricing for its premium devices. That compares with a 20% market share in the same quarter a year ago and a 16% market share in the previous quarter when Apple released the iPhone 12.
