Xiaomi grabs the largest share as India’s smart TV market grew 65% YoY in Q2 2021

Since entering the Indian smart TV market in 2018, Xiaomi has cemented its place in the market as the leading brand, edging out Samsung who had held sway for several years before the emergence of the Mi brand. Last year, Samsung made a push for more market share with the release of multiple models spread across different price segments. Apparently, the Korean giant’s effort is still not enough as the latest report by Counterpoint Research’s TV Tracker Service for the second quarter of 2021 shows that Xiaomi still controls India’s smart TV market.

The report shows that the smart TV market in India grew 65% YoY in Q2 2021. This is attributed to an increase in the demand for smart TVs. This has subsequently led to an increase in the number of smart TVs in their portfolios.

Xiaomi, with a 23% share leads the market and is closely followed by Samsung with a 17% market share. LG occupies the third position claiming an 11% share with Sony at the 4th spot having cornered a 9% market share. The top-five is completed by OnePlus which raked in a 7% market share, recording a 20% QoQ growth.

The report also shows that the non-smart TV market grew 46% YoY in Q2 2021 but the growth is being hampered by the smart TV segment, taking an 80% share of the overall TV market during the quarter.

Despite failing to control the smart Tv market, Samsung leads the overall TV market propelled by the entry-level T4000 series which emerged as the main volume driver in Q2 2021. In addition, the 2021 version of the Crystal series influenced the brand’s market presence. Further, Samsung’s QLED TV business saw a 400% YoY growth in the quarter.

Speaking about India’s TV market, research Associate Debasish Jana stated, “India has always been a very lucrative market for TVs. With a large installed base of CRT and non-smart TVs, the country holds great potential for the growth of the smart TV segment.”

Jana added, “During the COVID-19 lockdowns, people were forced to remain at home for longer periods, resulting in a spurt in the demand for home entertainment, which in turn made the smart TV more popular in the country. Besides, OEMs are offering smart TVs with high specifications at very competitive prices, attracting consumers even more towards the smart TV.”

The rise in prices of panels (or open cells) and other TV components, along with chip shortages, in the global market, is keeping OEMs under pressure and we expect some price increase by a few top TV brands in the country. However, the Indian TV market is growing at a faster pace and is expected to reach the pre-pandemic level by early 2022.

Global smartphone production declines in Q2 2021; Samsung and Apple witness heavy drop

The production of smartphones has been severely impacted because of the global chip shortage as well as rising cases of COVID-19 in some regions of Asia, reveals a new report coming from TrendMicro.

The report adds that in the second quarter of this year, smartphone production totaled 307 million units which is a significant drop of 11 percent compared to Q1 2021. However, when compared to Q2 2020, the numbers represent an increase of 10 percent.

Samsung, which has been dominating the smartphone market for years, was the largest smartphone manufacturer by production volume in the second quarter of the year, making 58.5 million units. Compared to the company’s production in the first quarter of 2020, this is a massive drop of 23.5 percent.

The company has production facilities in India and Vietnam which have been hit hard with the COVID-19 outbreak. The South Korean giant had to temporarily halt production in some local factories or scale back production.

Apple iPhone 12

Coming to Apple, the production of the iPhone declined in the second quarter of the year but that is normal given that the company entered a model transition phase. In the third quarter, the Cupertino-based giant launches its new iPhone model and this time, it is set to launch the iPhone 13 series in the coming days.

The production of the iPhone went down 22 percent quarter-on-quarter to 42 million units. If the companies are to be ranked based on the production numbers, then Apple is moved to the fourth position, but it’ll make a comeback in the third and fourth quarter.

With Samsung getting the top position and Apple ranking fourth, Chinese smartphone makers OPPO and Xiaomi have secured the second and third position based on the smartphone units produced in Q2 2021. Both the companies produced 49.5 million units each and the count includes their sub-brands.

Xiaomi leads 5G Android smartphone market in Q2 2021 with almost 26% market share

Xiaomi has been on a roll this year and has been reaching new heights in terms of business and growth. The company recently became the world’s leading smartphone brand for the month of June 2021, marking the first time Xiaomi is leading charts globally.

Now, a new report from Strategy Analytics claims that Xiaomi was the world’s leading 5G Android smartphone manufacturer in the second quarter of this year, i.e. Q2 2021, capturing almost 26 percent of the market share.

The report adds that a total of 95 million 5G Android smartphones were shipped globally in Q2 2021 and among those, about 24 million units were shipped by Xiaomi, making in the leader of the market in this segment for the said time duration.

Over the past nine quarters, Xiaomi cumulatively shipped 70 million 5G smartphones, placing it close behind the South Korean giant Samsung which managed to ship 77 million units in the same timeframe.

Huawei, the Chinese technology giant remains cumulative 5G Android smartphone leader with shipments of 95 million units globally over the past nine quarters. However, the company is quickly losing its grip because of the US-imposed sanctions. This is opened doors for other manufacturers, including OPPO, Vivo, Honor, Realme, and more.

Lenovo (including Motorola) is the leader when it comes to 5G smartphone growth as the company’s shipments witnessed a growth of 3480% annually in Q2 2021, with shipments of 1.8 million units for the quarter.

Realme ranked second in annual growth, up 1773% year-to-year in Q2 2021 on volumes of 5.6 million, while OnePlus was placed third in growth with shipment volumes improving 877% annually in the quarter. Honor has also posted impressive numbers of 6.5 million 5G smartphone shipments that too within just two quarters given that it began selling 5G smartphones mid-way through the first quarter of this year.

China sees 78.1 million smartphone shipments in Q2 2021; Vivo becomes the leading smartphone brand

International Data Corporation (IDC) has today released a new report revealing data for the smartphone shipments in the second quarter of this year for the Chinese market. It claims that about 78.1 million units were shipped in China in Q2 2021, which represents a decrease of 11 percent year-on-year.

However, the overall shipments in the Chinese market first half of this year stand at 164 million units, which indicates an increase of 6.5 percent year-on-year. Interestingly, Honor has made its entry into the top five smartphone brands in China. This is the first listing of Honor in the report after it split from its parent company Huawei earlier this year to become an independent brand.

Vivo is leading the Chinese smartphone market in the second quarter of this year with shipments of 18.6 million units, capturing about 23.8 percent of the market. OPPO follows closely in the second spot with 16.5 million units and a 21.1 percent market share.

The third brand on the list is Xiaomi that managed to ship 13.4 million units in China in the second quarter of the year, covering 17.2 percent market. Xiaomi was recently ranked as the second-largest smartphone brand globally, overtaking Apple and just behind Samsung.

Apple has managed to ship 8.6 million iPhones in Q2 2021 in China and has covered about 10.9 percent of the market. Honor, making its debut in the list, capturing about 8.9 percent of the market with shipments of 6.9 million units.

Among all these brands, Xiaomi registered the highest growth of 47 percent year-on-year, followed by Vivo at 23.6 percent. OPPO grew by 17.3 percent while Apple registered a growth of 17 percent in China.

Samsung Q2 2021 profit likely jumped 38% due to strong chip prices

The South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics likely saw a surge of 38 percent for the second quarter of this year, i.e. Q2 2021, thanks to the increased and strong pricing for the chipsets in the market.

Demand for consumer electronics spurred, leading to the high demand for chips, creating a global shortage, leading to price hikes. This, along with recovering investment in data centers has resulted in good operating profit for the firm.

The report coming from Reuters adds that the operating profit for the world’s biggest memory chip and smartphone maker likely jumped to 11.3 trillion won ($10 billion), according to a Refinitiv SmartEstimate drawn from 20 analysts.

Prices of DRAM chips, widely used in servers, mobile phones, and other computing devices, jumped 27 percent compared to the March quarter, while those of NAND flash chips that serve the data storage market rose 8.6 percent, according to research provider Trendforce.

Profit also improved at Samsung’s chip-contract manufacturing and logic chip design business, partly because operations at its storm-hit Texas factory returned to normal. The estimated chip division’s operating profit in April-June rose about 22% from the year-earlier period to about 6.6 trillion won.

However, Samsung’s smartphone shipments dropped to about 59 million in April-June from about 76 million in the first quarter, according to Shinyoung Investment & Securities. Reduced demand from India, hard hit by the pandemic during the quarter, as well as tight supply for some mobile processor chips may also have affected shipments.

The strong performance of Samsung is coming despite the company shipping fewer smartphones than in January-March. This underscores the stratospheric demand for chips that have depleted stockpiles and filled production capacity.

It is said that the result would be up 20 percent from the first quarter and mark Samsung’s highest operating income in the second quarter since 2018 as the revenue is likely to rise by 15.4 percent. Samsung is scheduled to announce preliminary second-quarter results on Wednesday, i.e. 7th July.
