<p>According to the report by research firm Gartner, the China-based tech giant still maintained its third position in the global smartphone sales ranking for the third quarter 2016. Apart from that, Huawei grabbed a large slice of the market share for Q3 2016 thereby closing in on Apple who still sits at the second position. However, Apple&#8217;s lead over Huawei has shrunk a great deal according to the report, with the difference in market share coming down to less than 3%. This is attributed to Huawei making in-roads into the high-end smartphone sales, spurred by model such as Honor which was a hot sell in top-end markets.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/gartner_smartphone_sales_q3_2016/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-107740" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gartner_smartphone_sales_Q3_2016.jpg?x10805" alt="gartner_smartphone_sales_q3_2016" width="674" height="185" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gartner_smartphone_sales_Q3_2016.jpg 674w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gartner_smartphone_sales_Q3_2016-300x82.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px" /></a></p>
<p>OPPO, another Chinese brand owned by BBK Electronics, also posted a very strong result during the third quarter. The company followed closely behind Huawei at number four in Gartner&#8217;s global ranking for the quarter under review. OPPO is closely followed by BBK Communication Equipment, another subsidiary of BBK Electronics.</p>

<p>Korean giant Samsung maintained its overall lead in global smartphone market share ranking for the third quarter but recorded a 14.2% loss in global market share when compared to the same period last year. Gartner posits that this was the worse ever posting by the company. The loss may be unconnected with the company&#8217;s botched Galaxy Note 7 which was predicted to amass a huge loss due to its withdrawal from the market over battery explosion related issues.</p>

The report shows that there has been a growth of 11% compared to the same period last year.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-107229 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/IDC_2007.png?x10805" alt="IDC" width="800" height="378" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/IDC_2007.png 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/IDC_2007-300x142.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/IDC_2007-768x363.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The growth in shipment has been attributed to a number of factors such as the festive holidays, online mega sales, and early importation of phones due to Chinese holidays in September (Mid-Autumn Festival) and October (National Day).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">IDC puts the total number of shipments for the quarter at about 72.3 million (smartphone and feature phones) which translates to a growth of 18.1 percent.<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-25730" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Xiaomi-India-smartphone-sales-soon.png?x10805" alt="Xiaomi-India-smartphone-sales-soon" width="680" height="346" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Xiaomi-India-smartphone-sales-soon.png 680w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Xiaomi-India-smartphone-sales-soon-300x152.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Xiaomi-India-smartphone-sales-soon-502x255.png 502w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The big winners for the quarter are Samsung with 23%; Lenovo (and Motorola) with 9.6%; Micromax with 7.5%; Xiaomi with 7.4%; and Reliance Jio with 7% of the total shipment</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">According to the report, Xiaomi&#8217;s shipment has grown over 2.5 times compared to the same period last year and may continue to do so due to its plan to expand its offline channels.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><span style="color: #ff0000">READ MORE:</span> <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/10/05/xiaomi-india-sells-half-million-phones-72-hours-festive-sales/">Xiaomi India Sells Half a Million Smartphones in 72 Hours During Festive Sales</a><span id="more-107187"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The surprising part of the report is the large amount of feature phones still being bought. Feature phones shipped in the quarter were over 39 million. IDC says the migration from feature phones to smartphones have slowed and this is helping Indian-based vendors maintain dominance in the overall mobile market.</p>
