The statistical data shows the global smartphone market shares for Q3 2017 as well as the mobile phone market shipment comprising both smartphones and feature phones. The stats showed that the global smartphone shipments grew 5% YoY and 9% QoQ.

Samsung maintains its stronghold on the smartphone industry, with a 21% control of the market shares while Apple retained its second spot with a 12% share of the market. Chinese tech giant Huawei slipped closely into the third position with 10% share of the market, narrowly losing out to Apple for the second spot. Huawei is closely followed by OPPO with 8% market share. Vivo and Xiaomi both completed the top 5 spot with 7% market share apiece. The data saw the surprise inclusion of Lenovo, including the Motorola brand, which raked in a 4% share of the market in Q3 2017. Counterpoint also noted that Xiaomi emerged as the fastest growing smartphone brand with a growth of 84% YoY.

Region wise, Apple maintained its leadership in North America with a 34% market share while Samsung came in second with 24% share. LG gained some ground in North America with a share of 17%. The top five spots are completed by ZTE – 11% and Lenovo- 5%. On the other hand, in Europe, Samsung holds the ace with a 33% share of the market while Apple came in at a distant second with 17% share. Huawei failed to gain ground in North America but was able to clinch the third place in Europe with a market share of 13%. Lenovo and ZTE completed the top 5 in Europe for Q3 2017. In Asia, the competition is stiffer as OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung struggled unsuccessfully to outpace each other. The statistics also captured the emerging market in the Middle East and Africa and sure, Samsung grabbed the lion share and in second place we have a surprise entrant- iTel in a tie with Huawei and Tecno at 8% market share apiece. Counterpoint noted that one in three smartphones shipped were from Chinese manufacturers.

Samsung registered about 22.3 percent market share for the third-quarter of 2017, according to market research firm Gartner.

Followed by Samsung, Apple sits on the second spot, registering a distant 11.9 percent market share while China-based Huawei follows Apple with 9.5 percent market share.

In the second quarter, Samsung registered 20.7 percent market share while Apple registered 13.7 percent market share. Interestingly, in the third quarter, Apple registered just 11.9 market share, indicating a drop for the Cupertino-based giant.

Along with Huawei, there are two more China-based smartphone manufacturers on the list of top 5 smartphone companies. Oppo and Xiaomi grabbed the 4th and 5th position with 7.7 percent and 7 percent market share, respectively.

Coming to the number of smartphone units sold, Samsung sold around 85.6 million units while Apple managed to sell 45.4 million units of its smartphones. Huawei, on the other hand, sold around 36.5 million smartphones while Oppo and Xiaomi sold 29.4 million units and 26.9 million units respectively.

In terms of year-on-year analysis, Samsung’s smartphone sales recorded a double-digit growth (around 19.3 percent) in the third quarter. Other smartphone vendors that registered double-digit growth include Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi. However, Apple is the only one that registered just 5.7 percent increase.

However, out of all smartphone vendors, Xiaomi achieved the strongest growth. The China-based company exhibited a massive 80 percent increase in the third quarter of 2017. This is majorly due to the company’s growth in India, along with growing sales from markets like Latin America and Russia.

According to market intelligence firm Counterpoint Research, in the last year, Xiaomi’s market share in India has gone from around just 6% to 22.3 percent, on par with Samsung. Recently, a new report from International Data Corporation (IDC) claimed that Xiaomi has taken over Samsung in terms of sales in 50 major Indian cities.

Xiaomi India’s head Manu Jain has disclosed that the company shipped a record 9.2 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2017 in India. This is the first time since Xiaomi first entered India three years back that the company was hitting such monumental stride in phone shipments.

The Chinese tech giant was able to ship 100,000 smartphones in the third quarter in its debut season in the country where it first sold its phones on Flipkart. While in Q3 2015, it crossed the 1 million mark. Xiaomi’s fortune continued to rise as it hit 3 million units in shipments in the third quarter of last year and now it surpassed 9 million units in Q3 2017. The massive sales recorded in Q3 2017 could be traced to the huge success recorded in the Diwali sales festival which ran from September 20 to October 19 and during which period Xiaomi revealed it sold over 4 million smartphones.

Manu Jain also revealed that research firm IDC now ranks Xiaomi as the number 1 smartphone brand in the whole of India. Xiaomi occupies the number 1 spot in the third quarter of 2017 edging out Samsung who was revealed to have the highest market share in Q2 2017. OPPO, Lenovo and Vivo also fall behind Xiaomi once again in the pecking order.

In addition, the Xiaomi India head also hinted at another record which his company clinched and this time it comes from Counterpoint research. The research firm is credited to have crowned Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4 and Redmi 4A top 3 selling smartphones respectively in India for the third quarter of this year. With the festive season still on, we expect another strong finish for the fourth and final quarter of the year from China’s Apple.

OPPO took the lead with an 18.9% market share, while Huawei and Vivo were neck and neck with each other with 18.6% market shares each. OPPO also recorded the highest growth Year on Year as it leapt from 16.5% last year to 18.9%. Fellow BBK subsidiary Vivo also recorded a substantial YoY growth of 2.5%. Xiaomi occupies the fourth spot despite a strong showing in Q3 but it grew from 10.3% share last year to 13.8% this year. U.S phone maker Apple completes the top 5 spot with a 10% share of the market, up from 8.5% last year.

While the top five brand experienced growth in their shipment compared to Q3 2016, the story isn’t the same for the other brands in China, including Samsung, whose cumulative growth in Q3 last year fell from 26.8% to 17.5% for this year. Tist isn’t a positive outlook as it shows the boom in the industry isn’t felt by all OEMs in China. There isn’t any indication that will change in Q4 as the quintet might continue their dominance with a lot of new, sleek models already released and even some more coming before the end of the year.

The average selling price of phones went up by 7% compared to the same period last year. This isn’t much of a surprise, though, because there is a noticeable rise in the unit cost of smartphones lately

Despite the increased price, the global demand for phones is said to have risen moderately by 3% year on year, pitching at a total of 367 million units. This is the highest figure ever recorded for this period of the year. The Latin America market spearheaded by Brazil led the growth with shipment rising by 11% YoY, followed by Central and Eastern Europe with 9% growth. The analysis also shows that traditionally strong markets are seeing a decline. Shipment in Western Europe stood at 30.9 million phones, a 7% reduction from last year’s Q3 estimate. But in general, smartphone makers amassed more revenue as a result of the 11% rise in the average selling price (ASP). One in eight smartphones sold over the three month period cost above $900. Last year only one in sixteen cost that much.

Even the ASP in China rose significantly by 15% despite that the market is home to tons of budget-friendly models. A total of 117 million units were sold in the quarter in China alone. Aside from China, demand rose significantly in other Asian countries like Malaysia and Bangladesh where sales rose by 25% and 22% respectively. The Middle East and Africa also saw rising sales and GfK predicts that Sub-Saharan and South African countries will continue to drive demand as smartphones displace the still-popular feature phones in the region.

The growth in shipment of Huawei’s high-end P- and M-series as well as the models sold by the company’s Honor sub-brand so far has continued to rise bringing this possibility. Huawei had already closed the gap between it and Apple with a momentious performance in Q2 2017 which saw the company record a total shipment of 38.5 million units representing an 11.3% share in global shipment, according to a report by research firm IDC. On its part Apple is said to have recorded 41 million units (12% share) in shipments for the same quarter which is just 2.5 million units over Huawei’s shipment.

Huawei’s performance cuts across several markets with China at the forefront as Huawei reportedly recorded a 22.6% year-on-year growth in its home ground. For the records, Huawei shipped 23.5 million units in the second quarter of 2017 which accounted for a 21% share. On the contrary, Apple’s shipments in China dropped 7.6% to 8 million units which is just 7.1% share of the highly saturated market. The same momentum was mentioned by Huawei in other markets outside China in the first half of 2017. A year-on-year growth of 45% was recorded in Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea. While in Europe, Huawei’s shipments in H1 2017 grew by 8% from last year’s figure. Majority of that growth is said to have been recorded in Germany, Finland and Poland where it reportedly doubled its sales.

Huawe has already indicated that it plans to continue ramping up its sales for the remaining part of the year. The company is said to have set its sight on shipping over 40 million units in the third quarter of 2017. The tech giant recently hinted that it is making progress in integrating brick and mortar stores in its sales plans in addition to offline sales. The number of physical stores is said to be 42,000 presently, a 19% increase over last year’s figures. The company’s popularity in various markets outside China has been on the increase and the company even predicts higher growth in the next 2-3 years.

Apple’s shipment in Q3 may drop slightly from the estimated 41 million units shipped in Q2. This prediction is based on the speculation that many consumers may withhold their purchases until the fourth quarter when the next-generation iPhone 8 and other models that will be launched become available. With this, Huawei’s expected growth over Apple in Q3 shipments may just be momentary as Apple still has the firepower to reclaim its place in Q4. We’ll be on the lookout to see how this pans out.
