And this is evident in the latest TrendForce Q3 2020 report. Accordingly, Chinese companies like Xiaomi, OPPO have raised the stakes in Q3 2020 Smartphone production by a huge QoQ margin. And the report predicts that the trend will continue into 2021.</p>

<p>TrendForce has released the <a href="https://www.trendforce.com/presscenter/news/20201202-10576.html">report</a> on Global Smartphone production for Q3 2020 along with predictions for Q4 2020, and beyond. As per the report, global <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphone-production">smartphone production</a> reaches a total of 336 million in Q3. This is a 20% QoQ(Quarter over Quarter) from Q2 and the highest QoQ increase in recent years. Plus, the rise is reportedly due to easing pandemic, holiday season, high targets of companies.</p>
<p>As you can see below, Chinese companies like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">OPPO</a> are next to Samsung(23.2%) with 13.2, and 13.4% market shares respectively. However, despite the lower shares, production of Xiaomi, OPPO has grown 51%, and 64% respectively QoQ in Q3 2020. To compare, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> only grew about 42%. Further, both Xiaomi and OPPO will reportedly ramp up production in Q4 and reach about 47 and 46 million production units respectively.</p>
<figure id="attachment_357887" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-357887" style="width: 607px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-357887" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/global-smartphone-production-q3-2020.png?x44794" alt="" width="607" height="273" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/global-smartphone-production-q3-2020.png 607w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/global-smartphone-production-q3-2020-300x135.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-357887" class="wp-caption-text">Credit: TrendForce</figcaption></figure>
<p>Apple gets a meager rise of 2% QoQ for production in Q3. Thus, it sits behind the Chinese giants at 4th place with 42 million units. However, with iPhone 12 series launch it <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/vigorous-iphone-12-sales-could-pave-way-for-more-cooling-solution-orders-report/">will substantially improve in Q4 2020</a>. Despite showing a 19% decline QoQ, Huawei manages to make 42 million units in 2020. With this, it has not only managed to equate Apple in production but retain the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/28/huawei-leads-russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020/">market position in certain regions</a>.</p>
<p>Regarding inventories, Huawei has already <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/26/huawei-survival-mode-suppliers-beat-us-deadline/">stockpiled enough chipsets</a> by bulking the orders before the September deadline of the US came up. To recall, the USA had <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/17/us-reinforces-restrictions-on-huaweis-access-to-chips-and-other-tech/">altered regulations</a> and made <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/16/us-announces-new-rule-that-could-cut-huawei-off-from-global-chip-suppliers/">getting a license</a> for supplying Huawei mandatory. As a result, report says the company might enter the scarcity stage in Q1/Q2 2021 if licensing becomes an issue. In the table, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo">Vivo</a> manages to get only the last place with just 30 million unit production in 2020 despite a 13% QoQ rise.</p>
<p>Going into Q4 2020, the report predicts a production range of 351 million units with a 4% QoQ rise. Despite a YoY decline, the production will <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/07/global-smartphone-shipments-growth-2021/">continue to revive gradually</a> from the pandemic. But it is subject to responses from the semiconductor industry and geopolitical scenarios. To sum up, Global smartphone production will sit somewhere around 1.25 billion units for 2020. However, it could increase to 1.36 billion units in 2021 with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/10/mediatek-anticipates-500-million-5g-chipsets-in-2021/">5G continuing to be the center of attraction</a>.</p>

<p>Counterpoint Research has released a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/russia-smartphone-market-q3-2020/">report</a> on the Smartphone market in Russia for Q3 2020. Although things are looking bad for <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Huawei">Huawei</a> overall, it maintains the lead in the Online Smartphone shipment market list with a share of 27.8%. This is a 2.2% YoY increase from 2019 but a 7.2% decline QoQ. Among this, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/huawei-sells-honor-subsidiary-to-zhixin-new-information-technology-co-ltd/">ex-sister brand</a>&#8216;s <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/honor-30">Honor 30</a> series helps it bag most of the online share in 5G models.</p>
<p>Overall smartphone sales get an increase of 5% YoY(Year on Year) in Russia whereas the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/online-smartphone-sales">online smartphone sales</a> hit 34% in Q3 2020. This is a 2% QoQ(Quarter over Quarter) increase from Q2. Report says that strict public distancing norms along with promotional offers like gifts, cashback drove online sales.</p>
<figure id="attachment_357073" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-357073" style="width: 1144px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-357073 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020.jpg?x44794" alt="Russia Online Smartphone Market Q3 2020" width="1144" height="388" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020.jpg 1144w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020-300x102.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020-768x260.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020-1024x347.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020-696x236.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/russia-online-smartphone-market-q3-2020-1068x362.jpg 1068w" sizes="(max-width: 1144px) 100vw, 1144px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-357073" class="wp-caption-text">Credit: Counterpoint Research</figcaption></figure>
<p>Precisely, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Honor">Honor</a> offered cash coupons to boost its sales whereas companies like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> managed to crack Samsung with aggressive models. In fact, it has five of the top-10 online smartphone models with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-8-pro/">Redmi Note 8 Pro</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-8a/">8A</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-9">Note 9</a> being its top three devices. Chinese company realme managed to enter the top-5 for the first time with a 1.7% YoY increase in share.</p>
<h6 class="related" style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK</span>: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/19/huawei-levels-samsung-in-top-selling-5g-smartphones-sep-list/">Huawei levels Samsung in Counterpoint&#8217;s September 2020 list of Top-selling 5G Smartphones Globally</a></strong></h6>
<p>Although <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> leads overall revenue in offline and online segments, it lost the online share to Huawei. In fact, its <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-a51">Galaxy A51</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-a31">A31</a> are among the top-selling devices online and offline but its online shipment market share for Q3 is 26.3% making it trail behind Xiaomi and Huawei. The report says that Samsung&#8217;s decision to focus more on offline is the reason for this.</p>
<p>Anyway, the list also has <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> sitting at 4th place with an 8.3% online market share. As for the online platforms, M.Video-Eldorado, Russia&#8217;s biggest consumer electronic chain, leads the online platform in Russia with a share of 32.5%.</p>
<p>Research Associate Soumen Mandal says that Chinese brands are strengthening their position in lower and mid-price segments. This is evident in Q3 2020 report as the report says that the average price of <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphone">smartphones</a> dropped 5% YoY in Russia and sits at $224 in Q3 2020.</p>

Similarly, CPT China reported a Net Profit despite an operating loss for the said quarter.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-202562" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/BOE-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="BOE logo" width="705" height="470" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/BOE-logo.jpg 705w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/BOE-logo-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px" /></p>
<p>According to the report(via <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=1921">TheElec</a>), the industry revenues for Display sit at $30.5 billion for Q3 2020. This is reportedly a 21% QoQ, and 11% YoY increase. Apparently, this is an all-time high since Q4 2017, and DSCC believes that an increase in <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LCD-Panel">LCD TV panel</a> prices is the reason. In terms of revenue share, Samsung leads the pack yet again but Chinese companies like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/BOE">BOE</a> and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/CSOT">CSOT</a> managed to grab a place in the top 10. This development comes at a time when China&#8217;s display panel sales are <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/16/china-south-korea-display-panel-market/">expected to reach $42.5 million</a> in 2020.</p>
<p>In fact, BOE outperforms <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LG-Display">LG display</a> in the overall revenue share to take the second spot. These two are the only non-Samsung companies to have double-digit shares. That said, the list has others like AUO, Innolux, CSOT, and Sharp who&#8217;s share percentages are between 5-8%. Besides, the Gross profits of display panels, as per the report, has grown 106% QoQ(Quarter over Quarter) from Q2.</p>
<figure id="attachment_356546" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-356546" style="width: 1400px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-356546 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/dscc-q3-2020-display-panel-revenue.png?x44794" alt="Q3 2020 Display Panel Revenue" width="1400" height="845" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/dscc-q3-2020-display-panel-revenue.png 1400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/dscc-q3-2020-display-panel-revenue-300x181.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/dscc-q3-2020-display-panel-revenue-768x464.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/dscc-q3-2020-display-panel-revenue-1024x618.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/dscc-q3-2020-display-panel-revenue-696x420.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/dscc-q3-2020-display-panel-revenue-1068x645.png 1068w" sizes="(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-356546" class="wp-caption-text">Credit: DSCC</figcaption></figure>
<p>Precisely, the Gross profits(profit-making &amp; selling costs) of Q3 2020 are at $2.7 billion which is a 182% YoY(Year on Year) growth compared to 2019. Accordingly, every panel maker except <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/CPT-China">CPT China</a> reports positive gross margins in Q3. However, as mentioned earlier, CPT China reported a net profit albeit having operating loss.</p>
<p>That is, it gained close to $211 million by selling long term assets. This meant that the entire industry(except Samsung, CSOT, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Sharp-Display">Sharp</a>) posted a net profit of $545 million in Q3 2020. As per the report, this is a first after losses for seven consecutive quarters in the industry. Also in terms of area shipments, BOE is very close to LG with a shipment of 8.1 million square meters followed by Innolux, and CSOT.</p>
<p>In any case, China is trying hard to overpower the South Korean counterpart at least in the LCD segment. The recent acquisition of fabs by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/28/boe-acquires-cec-panda-lcd-strengthens-display-tech/">BOE</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/CSOT">CSOT</a> from CEC-Panda and Samsung respectively in China means it will likely have 28% of the World’s Large-sized panel capacity. As a result, it will probably hold <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/27/china-will-soon-hold-70-of-total-lcd-panel-production-capacity-in-the-world-report/">70% of Global LCD panels production</a> capacity soon.</p>

Of particular interest is the performance in Western Europe where the COVID-19 induced lockdown shut some of the most-virile economies. While the smartphone industry took a hit, this latest data suggests that some brands are already back on their feet.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/idc.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-356455" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/idc.png?x44794" alt="" width="715" height="417" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/idc.png 715w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/idc-300x175.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/idc-696x406.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px" /></a></p>
<p>Samsung retains its number one spot despite seeing its shipment drop from 11million units in Q3 2019 to 10.3 million in Q3 2020. This gives Samsung a cool 3.6% share of the market. Apple came in at second with 8.2 million shipments which represents a 28.5% share of the market.</p>
<p>While Xiaomi is in third space, it is surprising to note Huawwei&#8217;sslip to 4th spot with just 2.5 million shipments the entire quarter. This is a crazy 58.7% drop in the Chinese market leader&#8217;s YoY performance. Also, it is a clear indication of how US sanctions have hit the company. Huawei&#8217;s loss is Xiaomi&#8217;s gain, though, as the company shipped 3.7 million smartphones in Q3 2020. This represents a 151% YoY growth considering that the brand shipped just 1.5 million smartphones and controlled a 4.8% market share a year ago.</p>
<p>OPPO is yet another winner from Huawei&#8217;s woes as its shipment grew from 0.1 million in Q3 2019 to 0.9 million this year&#8217;s Q3. This represents a 566.2% Year-on-Year growth.</p>
<p>On the whole, a total of 28.8 million smartphones were shipped across Western Europe in the third quarter. The current quarter may also take a hit as a result of the second wave of lockdowns in Western European markets like the UK, Spain, and France. And it doesn&#8217;t have any relation to the performance and preference of the overall Android Phone market.</p>
<h4><strong>Display(6-inch+, 1080P)</strong></h4>
<p>Beginning with display, it says the old-school 5.5-inch displays on Smartphones are almost outworn now. That&#8217;s obvious considering manufacturers are increasingly moving towards 6-inch+ displays except few like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Apple">Apple</a>. Out of the entire chart, nearly 17.2% of devices have 6.4-inch displays. This is followed by 6.3-inch, 6.5-inch which accounts for 14.7%, and 13.6% respectively.</p>

<p>Not to mention the 6.0-inch size that has a bite of its own but AnTuTu believes that the sizes are reaching a threshold here. Furthermore, the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/fhd-display">1080P resolution</a> of the display remains the most popular irrespective of size. Precisely, 19.5:9 and 20:9 aspect ratios that result in resolutions like 1080&#215;2340, and 1080&#215;2400 are the toppers. The former accounts for 35.7% of the entire data while the latter sits at 12.9%.</p>
<h4><strong>Processor(Qualcomm, Octa-core)</strong></h4>
<p>In terms of processors, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> leads the pack with a whopping 57.5%, while <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hisilicon">HiSilicon</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Mediatek">MediaTek</a> trail behind at 14.9, 14.1, and 12.4% respectively. And Octa-core CPUs dominate the segment with a staggering 95.1% of the market data across segments. Besides, MediaTek&#8217;s performance has <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/12/mediateks-monthly-sales-report-shows-a-staggering-61-2-yoy-surge-in-september-revenue/">reportedly increased</a> from Q2 due to the Dimensity SoCs. On the contrary, Huawei&#8217;s HiSilicon has taken a hit. And the report says the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/17/us-reinforces-restrictions-on-huaweis-access-to-chips-and-other-tech/">recent US ban</a> will further dent the percentage but we will have to wait and see what happens.</p>

<h4><strong>RAM, and Storage(6GB RAM, 128GB storage priorities)</strong></h4>
<p>For RAM, and Storage, AnTuTu says the majority of the data donors who use its app have either 4GB/6GB RAM. Accordingly, the 6GB occupies 34.3% while 4GB RAM is on 27.4% of the total. However, in <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/china">China</a>, 8GB is the king of the market where 4GB is rarely seen. The report predicts that with <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LPDDR5">LPDDR5</a> becoming mainstream, the threshold might reach 8GB soon and 6GB will be the bare minimum.</p>

The AnTuTu report says that <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-10">Android 10</a> devices account for 63.3% of the market. However, lower versions like 9, 8.0, are still out there at 27.7%, and 4.8% respectively. <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-11">Android 11</a>, despite being out for more than a month now hasn&#8217;t hit that many devices. Hence, it is under &#8220;others&#8221; accounting for 1.8%. That said, Google needs to find a way to bring all the users under one roof for a hassle-free experience.</p>

<p>As per the report, recovering in the global smartphone market is mainly because of increased demands in key markets such as the United States, India, and Latin America. Also, several regions are slowing opening up after <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/covid-19">COVID-19</a> precaution measures taken by various countries, which also included total lockdown.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> has kept its position as the leader of the smartphone market globally, enjoying a healthy market share of 22 percent as the company witnessed 2 percent YoY growth and 47 percent QoQ growth. It also managed to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/30/samsung-leads-india-smartphone-shipments-q3-2020/">dethrone Xiaomi in the Indian market</a> to become the leading smartphone brand.</p>
<p>China-based <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a>, which is facing several issues because of restrictions imposed by the United States, managed to become the second leading smartphone brand with a 14 percent market share in Q3 2020. However, the Chinese giant witnessed a significant 24 percent year-on-year decline and 7 percent QoQ decline in terms of shipments.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK:</span> </strong><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/30/china-smartphone-market-q3-2020-counterpoint-research/"><strong>Huawei leads the Chinese Smartphone Market in Q3 2020; 5G handsets accounted for over 50%</strong></a></p>
<p>One interesting outcome is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/30/xiaomi-overtakes-apple-smartphone-shipments-q3-2020/">Xioami surpassing Apple</a> for the third position with a 13 percent market share. It witnessed 46 percent and 75 percent YoY and QoQ growth respectively. Apple, on the other hand, held an 11 percent market share with a 7 percent YoY decline.</p>
<p>OPPO and Vivo took fourth and fifth positions with both the companies having 8 percent of the market share. OPPO-backed <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme">Realme</a> emerged as the seventh leading smartphone brand globally with a four percent market share. But the company posted impressive growth &#8212; 45 percent YoY and 132 percent QoQ.</p>
<p>The report shows impressive growth from two brands &#8212; <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xioami</a> and Realme. This is mainly because of the increasing demand in key markets like China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and other Southeast Asian countries.</p>

Since then, Xiaomi has been a leading smartphone brand in India in almost every quarter.</p>
<p>However, that has now changed. Samsung has managed to dethrone <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> in the third quarter of 2020, i.e. in Q3 2020, clinching the lead position in the Indian smartphone market, as per the <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/india-smartphone-market-q3-2020/">Counterpoint report</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-351026 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Q3-2020-India-Market-Share.jpg?x44794" alt="India Smartphone Shipments Q3 2020" width="725" height="440" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Q3-2020-India-Market-Share.jpg 725w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Q3-2020-India-Market-Share-300x182.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Q3-2020-India-Market-Share-696x422.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Q3-2020-India-Market-Share-692x420.jpg 692w" sizes="(max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px" /></p>
<p>The report reveals that Samsung managed to grab 24 percent of the smartphone market share while Xiaomi grabbed 23 percent of the market in India. The South Korean giant witnessed 32 percent YoY growth and managed to surpass the pre-COVID level in terms of smartphone shipments.</p>
<p>The company has been trying to get back to the pole position and as a part of that plan, it also refreshed its entry-level and mid-range offerings in the market. It updated the Galaxy A-series and launch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/26/galaxy-m31s-galaxy-m11-galaxy-m01-price-cut-drop-india-offline/">Galaxy M-series</a> phones in India. The company has covered almost every price point in the market and has been aggressively pushing its devices using online as well as offline channels.</p>

<p>On the other hand, Xiaomi slipped to the second position for the first time since Q3 2018 as the company witnessed a 4 percent YoY decline in shipments. This could be because of supply chain issues due to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/covid-19">COVID-19</a> as well as anti-China sentiments among consumers.</p>
<p>Vivo, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme">Realme</a>, and OPPO took the third, fourth, and fifth positions in the market respectively, with the companies getting 16 percent, 15 percent, and 10 percent market share respectively. While Vivo and Realme grew by 4 percent, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">OPPO</a> witnessed a massive 32 percent growth.</p>
<p>The report also reveals that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> surpassed OnePlus to become the leading smartphone brand in the premium segment while <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oneplus">OnePlus</a> led the affordable premium segment. <p>It reveals that the quarter witness decline in smartphone shipments by 1.3 percent year-on-year, which is better than expected because of the on-going <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/covid-19">COVID-19 pandemic</a> in which several countries were on lockdown for months.</p>

<p>Around 353.6 million smartphones were shipped in the third quarter of this year, i.e. from July to September. Earlier, IDC had predicted that there could be a decline of around 9 percent but the actual numbers are better than expected.</p>
<p>As per the report, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> takes the pole position with a 22.7 percent market share as the company managed to ship 80.4 million units in Q3 2020. The shipments indicate a 2.9 percent growth for the company year-on-year.</p>

<p>While one Chinese market saw a decline, another witnessed tremendous growth. Xiaomi has surpassed Apple to become the third-largest smartphone brand in the world, with a market share of 13.1 percent and 46.5 million shipments. It witnessed a growth of 42 percent, mainly because of increased demand for low-end and mid-range smartphones, especially in developing countries like India.</p>
<p>Apple and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo">Vivo</a> take the fourth and fifth positions with 11.8 percent and 8.9 percent market share, respectively. While <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> shipped 41.6 million units in Q3 2020, Chinese company Vivo shipped 31.5 million units.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s noteworthy that this is the South Korean giant&#8217;s highest quarterly <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphone">smartphone</a> profit in years. But the company has also added that it is expecting a decline in its profit in the next quarter, i.e. in Q4 2020.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-300041 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="1000" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>The reason started by Samsung for expecting a decline in profit next quarter is the weak demand for server chips and increasing competition in the smartphone market. Although the market amid the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/covid-19">COVID-19</a> pandemic, the South Korea-based company is still wary of the disruption caused and rising tensions because of the US-China trade war.</p>

<p>First, Garner says(via <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/pc-shipments-climb-in-q3-gartner-and-idc-report/">ZDNet</a>) PC shipments for Q3 2020 is 71.4 million units. This is a 3.6% increase YoY from 2019. <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Lenovo">Lenovo</a> remained at the top with 18.3 million units clocking an 8.3% YoY from 2019. Also, Lenovo reportedly faced a decline in desktop shipments but demand from China saved it. <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Apple">Apple</a> occupied fourth place behind <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/HP">HP</a>, and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Dell">Dell</a> despite having a higher YoY growth in Q3 of 7.3%.</p>
<figure id="attachment_347775" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-347775" style="width: 1333px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-347775" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020.png?x44794" alt="" width="1333" height="805" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020.png 1333w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020-300x181.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020-768x464.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020-1024x618.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020-696x420.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020-1068x645.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/gartner-pc-shipments-q32020-695x420.png 695w" sizes="(max-width: 1333px) 100vw, 1333px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-347775" class="wp-caption-text">Credits: Gartner</figcaption></figure>
<p>That said, Garnet says its report doesn&#8217;t include <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Chromebook">Chromebook</a> shipments but desktop and notebook PCs. However, a rough report <a href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2020-10-12-gartner-says-worldwide-pc-shipments-grew-3-point-six-percent-in-the-third-quarter-of-2020">says</a> the demand was higher especially in countries like the US which lead to a 90% growth in Q3. Likewise, HP though trailed behind Lenovo globally dominated the US PC shipments with a 15.4% YoY growth compared to Lenovo&#8217;s 10.5%. Research Director at Gartner, Kitagawa says that Mobile PC demand surged in the US as business shifted from desktop to Mobile PCs whilst bringing some of the workers back to the office.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/12/india-pc-market-share-q2-2020/">India&#8217;s PC market declines 37.3% YoY during Q2 2020 with shipments of 2.1 million units</a></strong></p>
<p>Furthermore, IDC(International Data Corporation) report says that Global <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/pc-shipments">PC shipments</a> stand at 81.272 million units for Q3 2020. This is a 14.6% YoY growth from 2019. Report <a href="https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS46928320">says</a> Asia/Pacific(ApeJ) excluding Japan posted single-digit growth with shipments driven by inventory restocking and strong demand for <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Notebook-pc">Notebook PCs</a>. The situation for Europe, Middle East, Africa(EMEA) remained the same. In the USA and Canada, traditional PCs clocked growth for Q3 as stay-at-home continued.</p>

<p>Once again, just like the previous report, Lenovo, and HP topped the charts with 19.272, and 18.690 million units respectively. Both of them almost clocked the same 11.2% YoY growth. Following them, Dell, Apple, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Acer">Acer Group</a>, and others completed this list. That said, as per IDC, both Lenovo, and HP dominated the global arena with a near 23.7%, and 23% market shares respectively. IDC&#8217;s Jitesh Ubrani says that if there was no shortage of components, the shipments would have soared even higher.</p>

<p>As per the company, the operating <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/profit">profit</a> for the third quarter of this year stands at 12.3 trillion Korean won, which is about $10.6 billion. Consolidated sales were approximately 66 trillion won for the quarter, up about 6.5 percent than a year ago.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-281148 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Logo" width="730" height="486" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung.jpg 730w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/samsung-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>The numbers revealed by Samsung in its earnings guidance is higher than the 10.5 trillion won that analysts had predicted for the September quarter. In the second quarter, the company had posted a 23 percent jump in operating profit to 8.1 trillion won (~$7 billion).</p>
<p>Samsung has not provided a breakdown of how its different business units performance. However, it is being speculated that the results are driven by a rise in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphone">smartphone</a> sales, consumer electronics, and home appliances in the third quarter as well as higher earnings in the memory-related business.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK:</span> </strong><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/08/huawei-may-sell-the-honor-mobile-phone-business-analyst-ming-chi-kuo/"><strong>Huawei may sell the Honor mobile phone business, predicts analyst Ming-Chi Kuo</strong></a></p>
<p>The South Korean giant is in a pretty good position right now and is expected to register further growth in the coming quarters, at the expense of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a>. The Chinese giant is facing several issues and is currently fighting to keep its business afloat and the biggest beneficiary seems to be Samsung.</p>
<p>Apart from the smartphone business, Samsung is also impacting Huawei in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/network">network</a> equipment business. Last month, the company won a network equipment supply contract from Verizon worth around $6.6 billion.</p>

This was mainly because of lower-than-expected sales of the flagship Galaxy S20 lineup.</p>
<p>However, now it seems that the company is in a better position. As <a href="https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20200928002700320?section=business/industry">per the reports</a>, analysts believe that the company could report strong earnings for the third quarter of this year, mainly because of solid semiconductor business and smartphone sales.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-300041 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Logo" width="1000" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>It is being estimated that the South Korean giant could post a 20.7 percent increase in sales and about a 27.6 percent increase in operating profit compared to the numbers shared by the company for the previous quarter.</p>
<p>The prices for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/memory-chips">memory chips</a> have declined in the market by 10 percent to 15 percent and despite that, Samsung has managed to sail through without a big drop in sales. In fact, analysts estimate that the chip business of Samsung could post an operating profit of around 5 trillion won for the third quarter.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><span style="color: #ff0000"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: </strong></span><a title="Realme 7i likely to debut soon in India as moniker emerges on official support page" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/28/realme-7i-likely-to-debut-soon-in-india-as-moniker-emerges-on-official-support-page/" rel="bookmark"><strong>Realme 7i likely to debut soon in India as moniker emerges on the official support page</strong></a></p>
<p>Further, the company&#8217;s foundry business also reported growth in Q3 2020 as it managed to secure chipset manufacturing orders from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/nvidia">NVIDIA</a>. Another department where the company registers growth is smartphones.</p>
<p>As per the reports, Samsung&#8217;s smartphone business is estimated to report about 4 trillion won in operating profit for the third quarter of the year, more than double compared to 1.95 trillion won in Q2 2020.</p>
<p>The company reportedly managed to ship 80 million units of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphones">smartphones</a> in Q3 2020, which is about 50 percent more than the previous quarter. On the other hand, sales of tablets reached 10 million units, an increase of 45 percent.</p>
