However, the global rollout of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/5g">5G</a> has been relatively slow, until 2021, where more and more countries are picking up the pace for their 5G coverage rollout whilst integrating 5G internet into their digital community. In turn, the global demand for 5G devices has skyrocketed in 2021, and smartphone manufacturers are rushing in to fulfill the 5G needs of the consumers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to the </span><a href="https://news.strategyanalytics.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2021/Strategy-Analytics-Xiaomis-Global-5G-Smartphone-Growth-Stalls-in-Q3-2021/default.aspx"><span style="font-weight: 400;">latest report by Strategy Analytics</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, the champion of the global 5G smartphone shipments race in Q3 of 2021 is none other than the one trillion market value Cupertino-based tech giant, Apple. It is no surprise that Apple shipped the most 5G smartphones in Q3 2021 granted that it has just released its popular and brand new 5G based </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-13/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">iPhone 13</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> series back in September 2021, as well as offering 100 USD price cuts for its 5G flagship of yesteryear, the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-12/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">iPhone 12</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> too. These two factors drove up sales of the iPhones, whilst in the process drove up 5G smartphone shipments for Apple as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><img src="https://s2.q4cdn.com/532631065/files/doc_multimedia/Xiaomi_hits_a_wall_Q3_2021.jpg" />However, Apple only accounts for 25% of all global 5G smartphone shipments in Q3 2021. The other 75% all came from Android phone manufacturers. Topping the Android charts once again is Xiaomi, as Xiaomi has been busy releasing its many 5G devices as of late with its flagship killers, the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-poco-f3/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Poco F3</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> series and </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-11t-pro/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mi 11T</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> series, and its budget 5G entry-level devices, with the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-poco-m3-pro-5g/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Poco M3 Pro 5G</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, and </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-10-5g/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Redmi Note 10 5G</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. But compared to Xiaomi&#8217;s last year Q3 performance, its Q3 2021 performance has stalled due to stiffer competition. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The biggest competitor is the runner-up of the global 5G Android smartphone shipments, Samsung. Assisted by its popular </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip3-5g/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Galaxy Z Flip3</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold3-5g/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fold3</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> released back in August, and its ever-expanding range of A series smartphones (with the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-a22-5g/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Galaxy A22 5G</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> as the latest and cheapest A series device with 5G support), Samsung has done a lot to make sure it does not fall behind its competitors. In Q3 2021, Samsung has been bridging the gap of overtaking Xiaomi in global 5G smartphone shipments and if the trend continues, Samsung can overtake Xiaomi as soon as the next quarter. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As for global 5G smartphone shipment growth, the fastest brand to see growth in the market currently is Honor, with a growth of 194% quarter on quarter. Honor was sold by Huawei to a Chinese tech consortium back in early 2021, due to its previous parent company, Huawei facing shortage issues from its suppliers, which include TSMC that manufactured its Kirin chips and Google that provided access to Google Play Services. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite the many challenges Honor faced, Honor made a comeback to the smartphone industry with its </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/honor-50/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Honor 50</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> series. The Honor 50 series was to fill in the flagship gap left by Huawei since it sported Magic UI in China which was very similar to EMUI developed in China. In addition, the Honor 50 was also equipped with Qualcomm 5G chipsets as compared to Huawei’s current flagships which can only be obtained with Qualcomm 4G chipsets. The most important part is driving Honor’s sales growth globally outside of China is undoubtedly the return of Google Play Services apps on Honor smartphones as it is no longer a part of Huawei, thus not affected by the US sanctions on Huawei.</span></p>

The data indicated a growing gap between Mediatek and Qualcomm in SoC shipments in the third quarter of the year 2021. Unisoc followed the ranking of chipmakers ahead of Samsung. The rise of Mediatek is corresponding to a seemingly steady decline of HiSilicon which now holds about 2% of the market from its lofty heights.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-431469" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint.jpg?x44794" alt="Mediatek" width="1200" height="597" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-300x149.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-768x382.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-1024x509.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-324x160.jpg 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-696x346.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-1068x531.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-844x420.jpg 844w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a></p>
<p>The Counterpoint results indicate a strong performance of Mediatek in the shipments of in-demand 4G chipsets which has seen it garner a massive 40% of the shipments. While some of the chipmakers continue to groan in their inability to meet the growing demand for the 5G chips, the Taiwanese company continues to surge in the numbers. Qualcomm is still the leader in the 5G segment of the market in terms of shipments.</p>
<p>The US company, even with the uncertainty and supply chain difficulties, still retained a commanding 62% of the 5G chips market, mainly driven by its ability to have multiple contractors for the manufacture of important SoCs under its 5G lineup. Qualcomm also enjoyed a surge in its 5G chips shipment numbers due to the massive demand for the iPhone 13 back in September when it was launched. Of course, the iPhone 13 series are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-431470" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2.jpg?x44794" alt="Mediatek" width="1200" height="848" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2-300x212.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2-768x543.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2-696x492.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2-1068x755.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/counterpoint-2-594x420.jpg 594w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a></p>
<p>Another chipmaker that had a strong Q3 2021 performance was Unisoc, which achieved a double-digit market share and overtook Samsung to the 3rd position. Its overall performance has seen the company having a third consecutive quarter growth. This was mainly driven by its ability to secure partnerships with several phone brands and its snapping of the supply of components to Honor at the expense of HiSilicon.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/infographic-q3-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Counterpoint Research</em></a> report, the global smartphone market grew by 6 percent quarter on quarter but saw a modest decline of 6 percent year on year. During Q3 2021, the market shipped a total of 342 million units, which is down from 265.5 million from last year. However, the South Korean tech giant managed to retain its spot on the throne with a sizeable 20 percent market share during this quarter, shipping 69.3 million units.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> came in second with a market share of 14 percent. The Cupertino based company shipped around 48 million units during this time, marking a notable 15 percent growth over the same period last year. Counterpoint credits this growth to the &#8220;persistent&#8221; growth of the iPhone 12 series and the launch of the latest iPhone 13 series. Similarly, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a> followed close behind with a 13 percent market share in Q3 2021.</p>

<p>Although, its shipments dropped by 5 percent year on year and 15 percent quarter on quarter, hitting 44.4 million units in the third quarter of this year. The company saw the slight fall likely due to the ongoing component shortage and supply issues. On the other hand, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Realme</a> saw its highest ever shipments in Q3 2021, shipping 16.2 million units. This marked a record quarterly performance that arrived despite the globe suffering from a lack of semiconductors.</p>

International Data Corporation (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/idc">IDC</a>) has now released a report for the global wearable device market for Q3 2021.</p>
<p>As per the report, the market witnessed a growth of 9.9 percent year-on-year, increasing shipments to 138.4 million units. Unsurprisingly, the shipments for earphones, including the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tws-earbuds">TWS earbuds</a>, increased 26.5 percent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-429650 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-2.png?x44794" alt="IDC Worldwide Wearable Market Share by Form Factor" width="535" height="428" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-2.png 535w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-2-300x240.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-2-534x428.png 534w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-2-525x420.png 525w" sizes="(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px" /></p>
<p data-vmark="68e4">For the first time, the shipments of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartwatch">smartwatches</a> surpassed the shipments of fitness trackers. With this, smartwatches have now become the second-biggest category in wearable devices, accounting for a 4.3 percent increase.</p>
<p data-vmark="68e4">The reason behind the increased shipments of smartwatches is being said to the users&#8217; demand for more powerful features and functions and thus they are gradually shifting towards smartwatches. Also, there&#8217;s isn&#8217;t a huge price difference between a smartwatch and a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/fitness-tracker">fitness tracker</a>, which is also a factor for the change.</p>
<p data-vmark="68e4"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-429649 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-1.png?x44794" alt="IDC Global Wearable Market Share by Company" width="998" height="536" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-1.png 998w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-1-300x161.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-1-768x412.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-1-696x374.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Wearable-Market-Share-Q321-1-782x420.png 782w" sizes="(max-width: 998px) 100vw, 998px" /></p>
<p data-vmark="68e4">Coming to the companies, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> is dominating the market with a 28.8 percent market share and shipments of 39.8 million units. However, the company&#8217;s shipments for the Apple Watch dropped by 35.5 percent, but it managed to maintain its lead with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-airpods">AirPods</a>.</p>
<p data-vmark="68e4">Samsung grabbed the second spot with a 9.2 percent market share and 12.7 million shipments. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> also recorded the same numbers, sitting along with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> for the second rank in the third quarter.</p>
<p data-vmark="68e4"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> and India-based Imagine Marketing grabbed the fourth and fifth position with 7.9 percent and 7.2 percent market share, respectively. Huawei shipped around 10.9 million units while Imagine Marketing, which sells products under the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boat">boAt</a> brand, managed to ship around 10 million units in Q3 2021.</p>

<p>Further, the company also benefited from partnerships with Spartan, ESOK Rally in Turkey, All-Russian Zavidovu SUP Challenge, Israeli Beach Volleyball Championship, and Cruce Teques in Mexico.</p>
<p>Apple has retained its top position in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartwatch">smartwatch</a> market in Q3 with a 21.8% share but its market share fell by 10 percent YoY. South Korean tech giant Samsung grabs the second spot with record-high shipments of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-watch-4">Galaxy Watch4</a> and Galaxy Watch4 Classic, helping the brand increase its market share from 9.9% to 14.4%.</p>

<p>This is being attributed to the strong demand for the Apple MacBook Air which was one of the first devices to come powered by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-silicon">Apple Silicon</a>&#8216;s first chipset &#8212; M1.</p>

<p>The report coming from the market research firm <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/strategy-analytics">Strategy Analytics</a>, the shipment of Apple MacBooks grew 10 percent year-on-year and the company has managed to capture around 10 percent of the overall market share.</p>
<p>With this, the Cupertino-based technology giant is now the fourth-largest laptop brand, just behind <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo">Lenovo</a>, HP, and Dell. Apple managed to increase its market share because of the surge in demand for the heavily discounted MacBook Air in the third quarter. In Q3 2021, Mac revenue hit an all-time high of $9.1 billion, ticking up 1.6 percent year-over-year.</p>
<div class="col-sm-12">
<p>Overall, the notebook sector grew 8 percent year-over-year. That figure would have been higher had it not been for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chip-shortage">component shortages</a>, rising manufacturing costs, and supply chain issues, says Strategy Analytics analyst Chirag Upadhyay.</p>
<div class="col-sm-12">
<p>For the fourth consecutive quarter, Lenovo topped the chart with 15.3 million notebooks shipments and a 23 percent share of the market, registering a 5 percent growth compared to the previous year. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hp">HP</a> followed with 14.3 million units shipped and a 21 percent market share, reporting a decline of 5 percent year-over-year. Lastly, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/dell">Dell</a> managed to ship 12.2 million units, accounting for 18 percent of the market share.</p>

The report is citing the global <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/supply-chain">supply chain</a> issues, shortage of components, and seasonal factors as the primary reasons for the decline.</p>

<p>The report further adds that the regions like Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region (excluding <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/japan">Japan</a> and China) saw the largest year-on-year decline of -23.2 percent and -11.6 percent.</p>
<p>However, markets like the United States, Western Europe, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/china">China</a> saw an overall decline of -0.2 percent, -4.6 percent, and -4.4 percent respectively. This is because these regions are valued more by the suppliers.</p>
<p>South Korean giant Samsung remains the market leader with shipments of 69 million units, covering 20.8 percent of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/market-share">market share</a> in the third quarter of this year. The company witnessed a decline of 14.2 percent year-on-year in Q3 2021.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/semiconductor">Semiconductors</a> accounted for about half of Samsung&#8217;s operating profit in the first half of the year. The rise in the operating profit is likely because of the rising prices of memory chips in the market and the spike in sales for display, catering to the need of smartphone manufacturers for their flagship models.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-300041 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Logo" width="1000" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>Samsung estimated that its profit in the third quarter of this year, meaning in the months of July to September, could stand at 15.8 trillion won, which is approximately $13.3 billion. The numbers are below the estimate of 16.1 trillion won by Refinitiv SmartEstimate.</p>
<p class="Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs" data-testid="paragraph-2">According to industry analysts, the rising memory chip prices and shipments, along with a jump in profitability at Samsung&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-foundry">chip contract manufacturing business</a>, likely raised the chip division&#8217;s operating profit by about 79 percent from a year earlier.</p>
<p data-testid="paragraph-2">Samsung also benefited from the demand for its recent <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-smartphone">foldable smartphones</a> and is increasing its market share in this category. The company reportedly sold over two million units of its new flagship smartphones within a month.</p>
<p data-testid="paragraph-2">The company&#8217;s operating profit for the current quarter is expected to be similar or slightly below the third quarter. Analysts are pointing to expectations that prices for memory <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chip">chips</a> used in personal computers will tumble from the fourth quarter as global lockdowns ease, and the smartphone shipments may also decline.</p>
<p data-testid="paragraph-2">Samsung&#8217;s chip manufacturing business is also showing positive signs and the company recently announced that it&#8217;ll <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/10/07/samsung-3nm-chip-production-delay/">start working on the 3nm process</a> for smartphone chips from next year and will shift to the 2nm process in 2025.</p>
