<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-display/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung Display</a> is apparently planning to raise the production of its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qd-oled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">QD-OLED</a> display panel technology. The rise in production hints at the company&#8217;s plans to push this technology forward for its upcoming products.</p>

<p>According to a <em><a href="http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=102582" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BusinessKorea </a></em>report, the South Korean tech giant&#8217;s display unit is planning on raising the production of its quantum dot organic light emitting diode panels from 30,000 sheets per month to 40,000 sheets per month. As per Jung Yun-seong, managing director of Omdia, &#8220;the company&#8217;s production yield of QD-OLED display panels increased to 85% in the first half of this year, showing its strong technical competence.&#8221;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="508" height="382" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/102582_117357_4452.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-491660" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/102582_117357_4452.png 508w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/102582_117357_4452-300x226.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/102582_117357_4452-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/102582_117357_4452-265x198.png 265w" sizes="(max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px" /></figure></div>

<p>Thus, the increase in production would allow Samsung Display to roll out 49 inch and 77 inch QD-OLED displays that will add to its product portfolio. Jung has projected that the company&#8217;s QD-OLED display panels will reach 600,000 to 800,000 units next uear for monitors and 1.4 million to 1.6 million units for TVs. In other words, this brings the total panel production to around 2.4 million units in 2023. </p>

<p>At the moment, Samsung Display is an industry veteran and one of the most profitable display companies in the world. Its profitability has already beaten the likes of BOE and CSOT and it even achieved a record high profit margin in the second quarter of this year with a 14 percent margin. So, it arrives as no surprise that the company is also pushing forward its cutting edge display technologies in the market.</p>

Recently, the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/16/samsung-display-qned-production-start-soon/">advanced the QNED tech</a> a step closer to the production stage. Today, another report by TheElec says that the company will begin trials for QD-OLED display panels.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-342353" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/1543_1725_2119.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="600" height="300" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/1543_1725_2119.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/1543_1725_2119-300x150.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=1932">report</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung-Display">Samsung Display</a> will run trials for the production line of the QD-OLED displays next month(December). And the production line for QD-OLED panels is reportedly called Q1 at it&#8217;s Asan Factory, South Korea. This plant and its ex-Guami plant had <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/17/samsung-corning-is-selling-its-south-korean-factory-to-a-chinese-firm">already been focusing on OLED displays</a>. The Q1 is an 8.5th generation line measuring(2,200&#215;2,500mm). It will likely produce 15,000 substrates per month initially before swinging to the full 30,000 capacity.</p>
<p>For the unware, A Quantum dot(QD) display uses quantum dots( <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/semiconductor">semiconductor</a> nanocrystals) to produce pure monochromatic red, green, and blue light. When a light wave strikes them, they emit color. Thus, a <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QD-QLED">QD-OLED</a>(Quantum Dot-Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a hybrid tech that aims to bring the best of both worlds(OLED, QD). As a result, you can get the perfect blacks, contrast like OLED, and brightness levels with colors like a typical QLED(Quantum LED).</p>
<h6 class="related" style="text-align: center"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/27/china-will-soon-hold-70-of-total-lcd-panel-production-capacity-in-the-world-report/">China will soon hold 70% of total LCD Panel production capacity in the world: Report</a></strong></h6>
<p>To quickly brush you on the difference between QLED vs OLED, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QLED">QLED</a> has an LED backlight, a layer of Quantum Dot film, an LCD matrix, and a color filter. However, OLED doesn&#8217;t have an LCD Matrix and uses an <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OLED">OLED</a> light source(individual pixels light up/shut down) and a color filter to produce the images. Thus, by combining the goodies of QD from a QLED and combining it with OLED, it will result in the above-mentioned perks.</p>
<p>Coming back, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> has reportedly set up all the equipment back in July and with the latest development, it&#8217;s just hitting one more checklist. Further, if the report is true, it will take about three months to set up the flow and six months to get the proper yield rates. And if it fails, it might move over to the QNED tech to attract buyers like Samsung Electronics, Sony. If we recall, the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/10/samsung-shifts-focus-to-quantum-dot-display-technology-with-11-billion-investment/">invested about $11 billion</a> in the QD display tech which was a run-up to the QNED and QD-OLED tech.</p>
<p>Although the company is a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/21/samsung-electronics-asserts-that-it-has-developed-a-new-industry-leading-blue-qled-technology/">pioneer in  QLED tech</a>, it just lacks the momentum when it comes to large OLED panels. Especially, when you have a rival like the LG Display, which is way more experienced, you start to feel the heat. Hence, it&#8217;s planning to ship a whopping <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/02/samsung-targets-two-million-mini-led-tv-sales-2021/">2 million mini-LED TVs</a> in 2021 to compete with LG.</p>
<p>And if it reaps benefits, the report says it might just switch over to <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QNED">QNED</a> rather than risking it with QD-OLED. Either way, let&#8217;s play the waiting game to see if Samsung hits this one out of the ballpark.</p>
<h6 class="related" style="text-align: center"><strong>UP NEXT: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/25/samsung-lcd-shut-down-delay-march-2021/">Samsung delays shutting down its LCD business till March 2021</a></strong></h6>
