Xiaomi outgrows Apple, becoming the world’s second-largest smartphone maker

Xiaomi took second place in global smartphone sell-through volume in August 2024, outperforming Apple. This is in terms of the actual number of units sold to end customers rather than the quantity supplied to retailers. The data is from Counterpoint’s Smartphone 360 Monthly Tracker.

Infinix has just teased the launch of a new product in the Indian market. The company is apparently planning to be the first in the region to release a 32 inch smart TV, which features QLED display technology. So let’s have a look.

Infinix teases new 32 inch QLED TV powered by WebOS

For those unaware, QLED displays are typically found in premium grade TV models, the likes of which Samsung offers. However, it appears that the smartphone brand is aiming on disrupting the Indian market by making an affordable QLED TV, which is also the first of its kind in the region thanks to its 32 inch screen size. At this size, most OEMs do not even offer Full HD resolution (1080p) and usually opt for HD resolution (720p). So using a QLED panel is quite surprising.

Based on what we know so far, the upcoming QLED TV will b powered by WebOS and promises to offer a user friendly experience with innovative features. Apart from the 32 inch base model, the upcoming Infinix QLED TV will even arrive in a higher end 43 inch variant as well. Notably, the company has hinted at its price tag being under 12,000 INR, which is quite affordable for a QLED TV model.

Furthermore, the new Infinix WebOS TV will offer a frameless design with a slim body and claims to offer vivid colors and accurate color reproduction as well. Unfortunately, this is all the information we have at the moment, so stick around for more updates.

Last year, Hisense made its debut in India with the launch of multiple smart TV models and home appliances. A year later, the company is now teasing to launch its second QLED TV in the country. This television will go on sale during the Flipkart Big Billion Days sale.

According to a listing on Flipkart, the upcoming Hisense QLED TV for India will have support for full-array local dimming. The company uses the tagline ‘A Bright New World’. This suggests that the television might have a brighter panel.

Thanks to these two factors, the TV is advertised to offer ‘unlimited contrasts’. In simpler words, we can expect the contrast ratio to be higher than the regular LED-backlit LCD panels found on budget smart televisions.

Further, the teasers also confirm support for ‘billion colors’. Additionally, like most premium TVs, this model will also have support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Going by the features, the upcoming Hisense QLED TV for India could be the Hisense U6G series. If that’s the case, then we can expect this television to come with 600 nits peak brightness, Android TV, HDR10, FilmMaker Mode, and others.

Internationally, the Hisense U6G arrives in four sizes – 50-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch. However, in India, it will be limited to 50-inch only.

Having said that, since Flipkart is yet to officially announce the dates for the Big Billion Days sale, it’s not known when the new Hisense QLED TV will be available for purchase.

Xiaomi is gearing up for a big launch event on April 23 in India. The company has already confirmed that it is bringing the Mi 11 Ultra, and the Mi 11X series to the country. Now, it has teased the arrival of a new Mi TV and it could be the 75-inch QLED TV that recently launched in Europe.

In a tweet, the company posted an image that has a poster of Godzilla. Along with it, Xiaomi has included keywords like “larger than life”, “Theatre of tomorrow“. All these hints that it is talking about a new Mi TV launch in India.

While Xiaomi hasn’t explicitly confirmed which TV is coming, its “Grand Cinematic experience from the comfort of your home” makes us think if it would be the Mi TV Q1 75-inch that launched in Europe back in February.

QLED TV from Xiaomi isn’t new to India. The company has already launched a 55-inch variant of the TV back in December. The Q1 75-inch would fit in the perfect phrase of “theatre of tomorrow” considering its size is about a 36% increase compared to the 55-inch.

That said, let’s wait for an official confirmation regarding the name and the launch date from the company itself. The Mi TV Q1 75-inch in Europe has the QLED 4K display panel that covers 100% NTSC color gamut, has up to 1.07 billion colors and 1,024 different color shades.

The TV also has a 178° viewing angle, 10,000:1 contrast ratio, 120Hz refresh rate with MEMC, HDR10+ certification and comes with support for Dolby Vision®️. Other features include HDMI 2.1 ports, ALLM, 360-degree Bluetooth remote, 30W speakers with Dolby Audio^TM and DTS-HD.

The Mi TV Q1 75-inch runs Android 10 TV OS and comes with support for Google Play Store, Google Assistant/Alexa voice assistant support, and has pre-installed Popular apps including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.

A few days back, Xiaomi India started teasing a new QLED TV for India. The company has since then teased it multiple times with a #QuantumLeapsAhead tag referring the Quantum Dot display technology. Today, it has confirmed that the TV will debut in the country on December 16.

Xiaomi India took to Twitter to confirm the launch event of the new QLED TV in India. As per the Tweet, the new QLED 4K TV will launch on December 16, at 12 PM in India. Xiaomi has shared a teaser video that shows the design. While the video hints that the TV’s design could be similar to Mi TV 5 Pro from China, Xiaomi’s website hints at new features.

Accordingly, an event page on mi.com is already live. The page also shows a TV design in silhouette with slim bezels on three sides. Let’s see if it sports the aluminum build like TV 5 Pro.  Anyway, the teaser says that the TV will have Quantum Dot visuals with features like Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and 4K resolution. Now if we recall, the Mi TV 5 Pro has HDR10+ but it lacks the Dolby Vision feature.

That said, the teaser page also mentions features like Dolby Audio and DTS-HD. For the unware, QLED TV stands for Quantum-Dot Light Emitting Diode. Typically, a QLED TV has an LED backlight, a layer of Quantum Dot film, an LCD matrix, and a color filter. Here, the Quantum dot(QD) uses quantum dots( semiconductor nanocrystals) to produce pure monochromatic red, green, and blue light.

Coming back, the QLED TV will also have the best patch wall according to the website. This suggests that the TV will come with at least the Patchwall 3.4 with a new carousel, user center, Live TVs out of the box. Further, the TV will also have HDMI 2.1, eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel), ALLM(Auto Low Latency Mode), and AV1(AOMedia Video 1), and more. Let’s wait for more teasers in the coming days.

It’s a no-brainer that Samsung Display has made a lot of in-roads in the field of Display Tech. Recently, the company advanced the QNED tech a step closer to the production stage. Today, another report by TheElec says that the company will begin trials for QD-OLED display panels.

According to the report, Samsung Display will run trials for the production line of the QD-OLED displays next month(December). And the production line for QD-OLED panels is reportedly called Q1 at it’s Asan Factory, South Korea. This plant and its ex-Guami plant had already been focusing on OLED displays. The Q1 is an 8.5th generation line measuring(2,200×2,500mm). It will likely produce 15,000 substrates per month initially before swinging to the full 30,000 capacity.

For the unware, A Quantum dot(QD) display uses quantum dots( semiconductor nanocrystals) to produce pure monochromatic red, green, and blue light. When a light wave strikes them, they emit color. Thus, a QD-OLED(Quantum Dot-Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a hybrid tech that aims to bring the best of both worlds(OLED, QD). As a result, you can get the perfect blacks, contrast like OLED, and brightness levels with colors like a typical QLED(Quantum LED).

To quickly brush you on the difference between QLED vs OLED, QLED has an LED backlight, a layer of Quantum Dot film, an LCD matrix, and a color filter. However, OLED doesn’t have an LCD Matrix and uses an OLED light source(individual pixels light up/shut down) and a color filter to produce the images. Thus, by combining the goodies of QD from a QLED and combining it with OLED, it will result in the above-mentioned perks.

Coming back, Samsung has reportedly set up all the equipment back in July and with the latest development, it’s just hitting one more checklist. Further, if the report is true, it will take about three months to set up the flow and six months to get the proper yield rates. And if it fails, it might move over to the QNED tech to attract buyers like Samsung Electronics, Sony. If we recall, the company invested about $11 billion in the QD display tech which was a run-up to the QNED and QD-OLED tech.

Although the company is a pioneer in  QLED tech, it just lacks the momentum when it comes to large OLED panels. Especially, when you have a rival like the LG Display, which is way more experienced, you start to feel the heat. Hence, it’s planning to ship a whopping 2 million mini-LED TVs in 2021 to compete with LG.

And if it reaps benefits, the report says it might just switch over to QNED rather than risking it with QD-OLED. Either way, let’s play the waiting game to see if Samsung hits this one out of the ballpark.

As expected, OPPO has finally launched its first-ever televisions after teasing them for a while. The company has introduced two models namely OPPO TV S1 and OPPO TV R1. The former is a premium model with a QLED panel and only comes in a single 65-inch variant. Whereas, the latter can be bought in either 55-inch and 55-inch version.

OPPO TV S1 Specifications, Features & Price

The OPPO TV S1 flaunts a 65-inch QLED panel with 4K resolution (3840 × 2160 pixels). The company claims the panel to cover 120% of the NTSC color gamut and offer a peak brightness of 1,500 nits.

Being a QLED display, the screen also supports local dimming with 210 partitions. Also, like most televisions these days, the panel also comes with a 120Hz refresh rate along with support for VRR (48Hz – 120Hz variable refresh rate) and MEMC.

As for audio, OPPO has partnered with Dynaudio to include 18 speakers with 85W sound output and 5.1.2 channel. Going by the specs, customers may not need to invest in a separate speaker system. Additionally, the TV also comes equipped with far-field microphones for Breeno voice assistant and a pop-up camera for video calls.

What’s more interesting is that the flagship OPPO television is powered by MediaTek MT9950 chipset paired with 8.5GB RAM and 128GB internal storage enabling it to boot in 1 second. Talking about software, it runs ColorOS TV with support for local streaming platforms like Tencent, Youku, Mango, and iQiyi.

Other features include HDMI 2.1, WiFi 6, NFC remote control to quickly enable screen mirroring and OPPO Share, blue light filter certified by TÜV Rheinland, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and 8K video playback support.

The OPPO  TV S1 is priced at 7,999 yuan ($1,197) but will be available for 6,999 yuan ($1,047) during the Double 11 (Single’s Day) sale in China.

OPPO TV R1 Specifications, Features & Price

On the other hand, the OPPO TV R1 sports a 4K LCD panel with an LED backlight. As mentioned in the beginning, it comes in two sizes – 55-inch and 65-inch.

The display of this television features a 96% screen-to-body ratio and covers 93% DCI-P3 color gamut. Unlike the costlier model, the screen does not support a 120Hz refresh rate, however, it does come with MEMC.

Further, it is powered by a less powerful MediaTek MTK9652 chipset but it still supports 8K video playback and 1 second boot time just like the premium model. However, the amount of RAM and internal storage are quite less at 2GB and 32GB respectively.

Other features of this television include HDMI 2.1, WiFi 6, blue light filter certified by TÜV Rheinland, 20W speakers with Dolby Audio, NFC remote control to quickly enable screen mirroring and OPPO Share, pop-up camera, far-field microphones, and ColorOS TV operating system.

As for price, the OPPO TV R1 55-inch costs 3,299 yuan ($493), whereas the OPPO TV R1 65-inch will set you back 4,299 yuan ($643) if you reside in China.

Samsung has witnessed a dip in the shipment of devices in recent times, mostly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the company has been missing targets when it comes to smartphones, Samsung appears to be confident when it comes to Smart TVs.

The South Korean giant has said that it is expecting to ship more than 100,000 units of its larger TVs by the end of August. The larger TV in this includes those models with a screen size of 75-inch or larger, reports The Elec.

The development comes just months after the company had said that it is positive about achieving its TV sales target for the year. This means that Samsung expects to ship 45 million units of Smart TVs by the end of 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic which was the reason for the fall in shipments by 60 percent YoY in the first half of the year.

In related news, Samsung is planning to launch its own lineup of Mini LED Smart TVs sometime next year. This will be yet another premium TV series from the company, which already has two lineups in this segment — QLED and Micro LED.

TCL has launched its new 5- and 6-series 4K Smart TVs in the market which comes with several features, including built-in Roku TV. Models in both these series come with QLED display and “HDR Pro Pack” for better visuals.

The highlight is the new TCL 6-series TV which comes with a QLED panel but has Mini-LED backlighting, which was showcased at CES earlier this year. The company has been using the same technology for its high-end 8-series TV models launched last year.

The Mini-LED backlighting gives a major boost to local dimming zones. The 6-series models also come with a 120Hz refresh rate. They are also ready for gaming, being the first to feature THX Certified Game Mode that promises to offer ultra-low-latency gaming mode.

On the other hand, the 5-series models also come with a QLED screen and a 60Hz refresh rate panel. There are three models — 50-inch, 55-inch, and 65-inch, each having 40, 48, and 56 dimming zones respectively.

Hisense is a well-known Chinese appliance and electronics manufacturer. The 51-year-old company has officially announced to enter India with a wide range of QLED and LED smart TVs on August 6. All of its latest offerings will be available to purchase from Amazon India, Flipkart, Tata Cliq, and Reliance Digital.

Hisense says that its range of smart TVs will be powered by Android TV Pie with Chromecast built-in and Google Assistant.  Some of the brand’s high-end 4K UHD TVs are also said to have Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Quantum Dot technology with Full Array Local Dimming.

All of them will have support for all the popular streaming platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, and others. In fact, the remote control will also come with dedicated buttons to launch these four OTT services.

Most importantly, Hisense will be offering 5 years of warranty on panels along with some discounts for customers buying its TVs during the inaugural launch period of August 6 to 9.

Further, the company also promises to launch Laser TVs and the world’s first DUAL CELL TV in India by the end of the year.  Additionally, it will also introduce Toshiba-branded smart TVs next month. For those unaware, Hisense acquired Toshiba’s television business in 2017.

Apart from TVs, Hisense will be also debuting smart air conditioners and refrigerators in India later this year.

BOE is one of the largest Chinese display makers. On Friday (July 17), the company announced that they have achieved a breakthrough in QLED technology. The firm says that it has managed to produce a panel with a resolution of 500ppi and 114% NTSC color gamut.

AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) displays are considered superior. It is a type of OLED panel with TFT (thin-film transistors) for better light control. This type of display is found on premium smartphones, laptops, TVs, and more.

For the past few years, display manufacturers are investing more in a new type of panel called QLED (Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diode). A few months back, Samsung  Display even officially announced to exit the LCD business by the end of 2020 to focus more on QLED. It even has plans to invest $11 billion for this tech.

Now, for the first time, the Chinese display maker has achieved to manufacture QLED panel with higher pixel density and color gamut. Hence, it is indeed a breakthrough for the company.

Having said that, BOE OLED panels were previously inferior to those by Samsung Display and LG Display. But the company has now caught up and even Apple is reported to use its panels for the upcoming iPhone 12 series.

Samsung is facing a new lawsuit pertaining to the use of its Quantum dot display tech. The lawsuit, filed by the British nanotechnology company, Nanoco, alleges that Samsung and its affiliates have infringed on its patents relating to Quantum Dots, the technology behind the company’s popular QLED TVs. Reuters reports that Nanoco is looking to obtain a permanent injunction against Samsung as it has “willfully infringed the company’s patents and seeks a permanent injunction from further acts of infringement and significant monetary damages.”

“Historically the group worked collaboratively with Samsung on developing enhanced quantum dots based on our unique and patented CFQD Quantum Dot technology and associated IP,” said Nanoco’s Chairman Christopher Richards. “We were therefore naturally disappointed when Samsung ended the collaboration and launched its QD [Quantum Dot] based televisions without entering into either a licensing or supply agreement with Nanoco.”

QLEDs form a very important part of Samsung’s TV market. Samsung reportedly sold over 5.9 million QLED TVs in 2019 alone. So, the lawsuit could turn out to be very expensive for the company, potentially costing millions, if not billions in lost revenue.

We can’t help but love Chinese companies and their technological exploits. They can replicate the latest technological products and deliver to us at far cheaper prices. If not for Chinese manufacturers, OLED panels may still be out of reach since Samsung and LG basically dominate that aspect. But Chinese manufacturers like BOE technology and Tianma are rapidly closing in on the Koreans.

In order to remain ahead of the pack, Samsung Display has hinted that it will invest 13.1 trillion won ($11 billion) by 2025 to produce and further develop quantum dot display panels. This is in a bid to stay ahead of Chinese rivals who have already caught up in earlier display technologies.

QLED or Quantum Dot OLED panel is Samsung’s recent invention and is used on the company’s latest 8K TV. Apart from Samsung, TCL also uses QLED technology on its recent 8K TV but we doubt if it was supplied by Samsung.

Samsung disclosed on Thursday that it will use the investment to shift its production of large format panels away from cheaper liquid crystal displays to the more advanced Quantum Dot technology, which is based on the organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technology. The company also disclosed that the new 8.5-generation QD lines will produce 30,000 panels per month from 2021, which will be used for making super-large QD displays of 65 inches or more. To accelerate this project, the company will gradually transform its 8th-generation LCD lines into QD lines.

The announcement comes as LCD prices have plunged in recent years due to Chinese makers, backed by generous state subsidies, aggressively expanding production capacity. The prices were also affected by sluggish demand for large TV sets amid a global economic slowdown coupled with the U.S.-China trade war.

South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Samsung will invest 10 trillion won in Quantum Dot facilities, while the remaining 3.1 trillion won will be used for developing the technology.

OnePlus announced two new high-end TV models in India last week dubbed the OnePlus TV Q1 and the Q1 Pro. Both the TV models come with a hefty price tag, with the Q1 starting at Rs 69,900 ($990) and the Q1 Pro at Rs 99,900 ($1414). However, there’s a possibility that these prices might go down slightly by the end of this year. OnePlus has confirmed that it will start manufacturing its new TVs in India by the end of 2019.

Currently, OnePlus TVs are manufactured and imported from China which means they are subjected to import taxes. However, once the company starts making these smart TVs in India, we might see some price cuts due to the tax savings as well as changes in labor expenses.

OnePlus also confirmed to 91mobiles that it doesn’t have any plans to make cheaper and affordable OnePlus TV models in the near future. Just like its smartphones, the company will focus on the premium segment of the TV industry to make its mark.

The OnePlus TV Q1 & Q1 Pro come with a beautiful 55-inch 4K QLED panel with 120% NTSC color gamut, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and HDR10+. Both models sport 50W speakers but the ‘Pro’ version features a motorized soundbar with six front-facing and two rear-facing speakers.
