<p>The Chinese gaming hardware maker announced the new gaming monitors earlier today (7th October 2021), which includes the Optix MPG341QR, Optix MPG321UR-QD, and Optix MPG321QRF-QD. The QD in the model numbers of the two monitors stands for Quantum Dot technology that the company claims would offer improved color performance during gaming. Furthermore, the three models feature an IPS panel on either a 32 inch or 34 inch display.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-417607 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot.jpg?x44794" alt="MSI" width="1200" height="465" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot-300x116.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot-768x298.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot-1024x397.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot-696x270.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot-1068x414.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-launch-3-new-gaming-monitor-Quantum-Dot-1084x420.jpg 1084w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>The screen&#8217;s feature high resolution, high refresh rate, next gen console compatibility, gaming intelligence, and other gamer oriented features. Talking about the Optix MPG341QR first, it sports a 34 inch display with UWQUHD (3440&#215;1440) resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio. In other words, it is a widescreen monitor, which also offers MSI exclusive monitor features like Gaming Intelligence. On the other hand, the Optix MPG321UR-QD and Optix MPG321QRF-QD are 32 inch monitors that offer Quantum Dot technology.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-417606 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence.jpg?x44794" alt="MSI" width="1200" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence-1068x534.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/MSI-Gaming-Intelligence-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>The former sports a UHD (3840&#215;2160) resolution along with 144Hz refresh rate and HDMI 2.1. Meanwhile, the Optix MPG321QRF-QD also features an IPS panel with WQHD (2560&#215;1440) resolution and a 175hz refresh rate. This monitor is aimed at those that prefer an even lower response time whilst still retaining great color. Unfortunately, the company has yet to announce the pricing for these new gaming monitors or their availability as of right now.</p>

Recently, the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/16/samsung-display-qned-production-start-soon/">advanced the QNED tech</a> a step closer to the production stage. Today, another report by TheElec says that the company will begin trials for QD-OLED display panels.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-342353" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/1543_1725_2119.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="600" height="300" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/1543_1725_2119.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/1543_1725_2119-300x150.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=1932">report</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung-Display">Samsung Display</a> will run trials for the production line of the QD-OLED displays next month(December). And the production line for QD-OLED panels is reportedly called Q1 at it&#8217;s Asan Factory, South Korea. This plant and its ex-Guami plant had <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/17/samsung-corning-is-selling-its-south-korean-factory-to-a-chinese-firm">already been focusing on OLED displays</a>. The Q1 is an 8.5th generation line measuring(2,200&#215;2,500mm). It will likely produce 15,000 substrates per month initially before swinging to the full 30,000 capacity.</p>
<p>For the unware, A Quantum dot(QD) display uses quantum dots( <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/semiconductor">semiconductor</a> nanocrystals) to produce pure monochromatic red, green, and blue light. When a light wave strikes them, they emit color. Thus, a <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QD-QLED">QD-OLED</a>(Quantum Dot-Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a hybrid tech that aims to bring the best of both worlds(OLED, QD). As a result, you can get the perfect blacks, contrast like OLED, and brightness levels with colors like a typical QLED(Quantum LED).</p>
<h6 class="related" style="text-align: center"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/27/china-will-soon-hold-70-of-total-lcd-panel-production-capacity-in-the-world-report/">China will soon hold 70% of total LCD Panel production capacity in the world: Report</a></strong></h6>
<p>To quickly brush you on the difference between QLED vs OLED, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QLED">QLED</a> has an LED backlight, a layer of Quantum Dot film, an LCD matrix, and a color filter. However, OLED doesn&#8217;t have an LCD Matrix and uses an <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OLED">OLED</a> light source(individual pixels light up/shut down) and a color filter to produce the images. Thus, by combining the goodies of QD from a QLED and combining it with OLED, it will result in the above-mentioned perks.</p>
<p>Coming back, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> has reportedly set up all the equipment back in July and with the latest development, it&#8217;s just hitting one more checklist. Further, if the report is true, it will take about three months to set up the flow and six months to get the proper yield rates. And if it fails, it might move over to the QNED tech to attract buyers like Samsung Electronics, Sony. If we recall, the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/10/samsung-shifts-focus-to-quantum-dot-display-technology-with-11-billion-investment/">invested about $11 billion</a> in the QD display tech which was a run-up to the QNED and QD-OLED tech.</p>
<p>Although the company is a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/21/samsung-electronics-asserts-that-it-has-developed-a-new-industry-leading-blue-qled-technology/">pioneer in  QLED tech</a>, it just lacks the momentum when it comes to large OLED panels. Especially, when you have a rival like the LG Display, which is way more experienced, you start to feel the heat. Hence, it&#8217;s planning to ship a whopping <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/02/samsung-targets-two-million-mini-led-tv-sales-2021/">2 million mini-LED TVs</a> in 2021 to compete with LG.</p>
<p>And if it reaps benefits, the report says it might just switch over to <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QNED">QNED</a> rather than risking it with QD-OLED. Either way, let&#8217;s play the waiting game to see if Samsung hits this one out of the ballpark.</p>
<h6 class="related" style="text-align: center"><strong>UP NEXT: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/25/samsung-lcd-shut-down-delay-march-2021/">Samsung delays shutting down its LCD business till March 2021</a></strong></h6>

This move is motivated by the firm’s plan to expand production of quantum dot displays.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The South Korean conglomerate has a number of businesses and one of them is a display manufacturing unit called </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Samsung </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">Display. But now, it has decided to end the production of LCD panels so that it could focus more on the other two modern panels.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The company will be halting the production only at the end of the year but has already reduced its capacity. However, it will still continue to supply LCD panels for the orders that have been placed earlier by its clients. It is worth noting that most of the panels made by the company are used in its own TV lineup.</span></p>

Additionally, the company is also reported to have placed orders for equipment used in manufacturing quantum dot displays to ramp up its production.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The decision to shun the production of LCD displays was expected as Samsung had already announced its plans to shift focus to Quantum Dot display technology with </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/10/samsung-shifts-focus-to-quantum-dot-display-technology-with-11-billion-investment/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">$11 billion investment</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in October 2019.</span></p>

The lawsuit, filed by the British nanotechnology company, Nanoco, alleges that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> and its affiliates have infringed on its patents relating to Quantum Dots, the technology behind the company&#8217;s popular <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QLED">QLED</a> TVs. Reuters reports that Nanoco is looking to obtain a permanent injunction against Samsung as it has &#8220;<em>willfully infringed the company’s patents and seeks a permanent injunction from further acts of infringement and significant monetary damages.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/663_778_1914.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-297857" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/663_778_1914.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung 8K QLED TV" width="600" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/663_778_1914.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/663_778_1914-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Historically the group worked collaboratively with Samsung on developing enhanced quantum dots based on our unique and patented CFQD Quantum Dot technology and associated IP,&#8221; </em>said Nanoco’s Chairman Christopher Richards. <em>&#8220;We were therefore naturally disappointed when Samsung ended the collaboration and launched its QD [Quantum Dot] based televisions without entering into either a licensing or supply agreement with Nanoco</em>.&#8221;</p>
<p>QLEDs form a very important part of Samsung&#8217;s TV market. Samsung <a href="https://pulsenews.co.kr/view.php?year=2019&amp;no=1061366">reportedly</a> sold over 5.9 million QLED TVs in 2019 alone. So, the lawsuit could turn out to be very expensive for the company, potentially costing millions, if not billions in lost revenue.</p>

The LCD business has an overall value of $106 billion which makes this recent news quite significant. Smaller stakeholders in the industry would seek to gain a higher standing by buying out the leading roles that are owned by Samsung and LG.</p>
<p>The news of selling major portions of the LCD business arrives after both South Korean tech giants move towards <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/quantum-dot-display/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Quantum Dot</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OLED</a> displays. Notably, it has been speculated that this transition would seek to drive up prices for LCD panels in the first half of this year; since a shortage of supply is expected to arrive within the industry.</p>
<p>In the large $106 billion LCD industry, Samsung and LG represent a stake worth about $33 billion. This large sum represents a major share and both known electronics brands are reportedly planning on selling their respective stakes in the market. The OEMs are said to focus more on the booming OLED display and will also boost production large size displays for products like television using this technology.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-300041 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="1000" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/samsung-logo-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>According to reports, Samsung Display has sold its LCD manufacturing equipment at its Gen-8 LCD production line to a display manufacturer from China, named Efonlong. The equipment will be shipped to China next month and Samsung will use the capacity freed up to produce quantum dot displays. The Gen-8 line will now produce 65 inch or larger displays using the new and emerging display technology.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/02/02/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-hands-on-video-posted-on-the-web-to-cost-e1599-in-europe/">Samsung Galaxy Z Flip hands on video posted on the web; to cost €1599 in Europe</a></strong></h6>
<p>On the other hand, LG is looking to close a deal with another Chinese LCD display manufacturer. The South Korean brand also wishes to sell its LCD manufacturing equipment which is from its P8 manufacturing line. Unlike Samsung, LG will use the opened production capacity to boost OLED production in its manufacturing plants.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-263604 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="800" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SM_LG-OLED-ThinQ-1280-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></p>
<p>This marks a major shift in the market as previous key players are leaving the LCD industry for a popular technology which is seeing considerable growth recently. Even in smartphone markets, OLED displays have become a flagship standard while TV&#8217;s with the same technology is also witnessing increasing sales. Fortunately, the price hike that will accompany this notable transition will only last in the first half of 2020 and should recover later in the second half of this year.</p>

After announcing the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/27/xiaomi-mi-tv-pro-goes-on-sale-in-china-55-inch-model-sold-out-in-a-flash/">Mi TV Pro lineup a few months ago</a>, Xiaomi is all set to release the new Mi TV 5 series on November 5. Today, the company has confirmed the new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mi-tv-5">Mi TV 5</a> models will come with the premium Quantum Dot display panels from Samsung.</p>
<figure id="attachment_286114" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-286114" style="width: 690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mi-tv-5-quntum-dot-display.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-286114 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mi-tv-5-quntum-dot-display.jpg?x44794" alt="mi tv 5 quantum dot display" width="690" height="920" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mi-tv-5-quntum-dot-display.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mi-tv-5-quntum-dot-display-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mi-tv-5-quntum-dot-display-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-286114" class="wp-caption-text">mi tv 5 quantum dot display teaser</figcaption></figure>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/29/this-is-the-xiaomi-smartwatch-its-heavily-inspired-by-the-apple-watch/">This is the Xiaomi SmartWatch; it&#8217;s HEAVILY inspired by the Apple Watch</a></strong></h6>
<p>The Mi TV 5 series will use a 4K <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/QLED">QLED</a> panel covering NTSC 108% wide color gamut. The Quantum Dot panel is likely to be supplied by Samsung who dominates this industry. The current generation Mi TV 4 series comes with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/18/xiaomi-unveils-70-mi-tv-4a-with-xiaoai-built-in/">either LCD or LED panels</a>, so with the Mi TV 5 series, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> is looking to enter the premium segment.</p>
<p>Xiaomi&#8217;s shift to Quantum Dot LEDs isn&#8217;t surprising. The recently launched <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/26/oneplus-tv-q1-oneplus-tv-q1-pro-launched-price/">OnePlus TV also features Samsung&#8217;s premium QLED</a> panels. So, the Mi TV maker is trying to jump into the premium segment with its new generation models. In fact, a r<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/15/could-xiaomi-be-planning-to-take-on-oneplus-in-the-premium-tv-segment/">ecent survey from one of the Xiaomi executives</a> had already given us a glimpse of Xiaomi&#8217;s intentions. Unfortunately, we don&#8217;t have any more information on the upcoming TVs.</p>

<p>Xiaomi has launched a few premium TV models in the past such as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/03/24/xiaomis-65-inch-curved-tv-pictures/">Mi TV curved 65&#8243;</a> and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/23/xiaomi-mi-mural-tv-65-inch-wallpaper-official/">Mi Wallpaper TV</a>.</p>

Ltd has announced that it has successfully developed a new 5-inch AMQLED display. AMQLED is short for Active Quantum-dot Light Emitting Diode.</p>
<p>The new display technology differs from LCD in that while the latter uses liquid crystals to rotate polarized light (for LED-backlit displays, LEDs illuminate the pixels on the screen), AMQLED uses quantum dots to light up the screen thereby resulting in a display with a wider color gamut of up to 100%.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-123269 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/AMQLED-BOE.jpg?x44794" alt="BOE AMQLED" width="600" height="450" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/AMQLED-BOE.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/AMQLED-BOE-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/AMQLED-BOE-160x120.jpg 160w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>Quantum dots are actually small semi-conductor crystals that emits varying colors based on their size. The quantum dots absorb energy when excited and emit different colors depending on the size you adjust them to. This allows them to be used as a backlight technology or as an active quantum-dot light emitting diode.</p>

<p>Apart from having a wider color range than AMOLED displays, another advantage AMQLED has over AMOLED is that it is cheaper to produce and has a longer lifespan. Quantum dot is still in its infancy and new breakthroughs are expected to see it applied to other fields like solar cells and biological sciences.</p>
