Last July, Qualcomm announced Quick Charge 5, its latest charging protocol that brings support for 100W+ charging to mobile phones. So far, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra and the ROG Phone 5 series are the only phones that support the charging protocol. While we wait for more devices that support the charging protocol to be announced, Baseus has a new charger that supports Quick Charge 5 alongside other charging protocols.

The Baseus Gan Fast Charger 100W, as it is officially called, is a single-port USB-C power brick. The charger has a black/white casing with a foldable plug design and an LED at the corner. It is pretty small too – Baseus says it is 40% smaller than Apple’s 96W USB-C charger – and its dimensions are given as 67mm x 30mm x 55mm.

The manufacturer says it has BCT (Baseus Cooling Technology) which “uses nanotechnology to accelerate cooling”. Apart from being Quick Charge 5 certified, the charger also supports other charging protocols such as Quick Charge 4.0+, Power Delivery 3.0, and PPS.

The Baseus Gan Fast Charger 100W can charge Apple MacBooks (16” and 13” pro models), Huawei MateBooks, Lenovo ThinkPad X, iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPhone 12 series, and phones from Xiaomi, Honor, and Samsung.

The charger has a price tag of ¥299 (~$46) but those who preorder between today and the 10th of April will be able to grab it for ¥199 (~$30). It is available on JD.com in Black and White color variants.

Qualcomm announced the latest generation of its fast charging technology last year. Called Quick Charge 5, the technology brings support for 100W+ fast charge to compatible devices.

Following the announcement in July 2020, only one device has been officially confirmed to support the charging protocol and that is the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra. An official document published by Qualcomm last November that contains a list of different Quick Charge technologies and compatible devices and chargers has no phone or charger listed under Quick Charge 5. This is not surprising as there are less than five devices in the world that even support 100+W fast charging.

While we wait for more devices to launch with support for Quick Charge 5, an image of what is most likely the first Quick Charge 5 charger has surfaced on the web.

The photo which was posted on Weibo by the account 充电头 (Charger) shows a white power adapter with Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 printed on one side. It has a white body and a single USB-C output port at the top. It is not the smallest of chargers but it should easily fit into the average pocket. Unfortunately, there are no details about the manufacturer and the price of the charger.

We expect only a few manufacturers will launch phones with support for Quick Charge 5 this year. These manufacturers will definitely also have their own chargers which may or may not support the charging protocol but third-party accessory makers such as ZMI, Anker, Aukey, Baseus, etc. should launch power adapters that support the charging protocol.

Qualcomm says that Quick Charge 5 is 70% more efficient than Quick Charge 4+ and is also 10°C cooler than Quick Charge 4 and Quick Charge 4+. The charging technology is also backward-compatible with previous versions up to Quick Charge 2.0. So if you decide to pick up a Quick Charge 5 charger, you will be able to use it to charge a device that supports previous Quick Charge protocols.

Back in April, Qualcomm announced Quick Charge 3+ for affordable devices. It came as a surprise since there was already Quick Charge 4 and Quick Charge 4+. Today, it has announced Quick Charge 5 which brings key upgrades, the key one being support for 100W+ fast charging.

Lately, we have heard manufacturers such as OPPO and Realme announce fast charge technology over 100W+. The aforementioned fast charging technologies are proprietary, but for several other manufacturers, Qualcomm’s Quick Charge is what they use which explains why the semiconductor company is also jumping on the high-power fast charging train.

Qualcomm says the new fast-charging technology is the world’s fastest commercial charging solution.

Quick Charge 5 enables charging speeds of up to 0-50 in five minutes (for a 4500mAh battery), with 100W+ charging power with our new Dual Charge Technology

Quick Charge 5 uses Dual Charge technology, similar to what a number of other manufacturers use for their high-power fast charging technology. The battery is split into two and Qualcomm says a single battery can be charged at up to 45W to 50W.

Qualcomm says the new battery technology is 70% more efficient than Quick Charge 4+ and offers 10 times more power than Quick Charge 1.0. It is also up to 10°C cooler than Quick Charge 4 and Quick Charge 4+.

Worried about battery life? Qualcomm says battery saver algorithms will extend battery life cycles. Quick Charge 5 will not only use Qualcomm Battery Saver but also use the new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities to extend battery life.

XDA-Developers explains Smart Identification of Adapter Technologies as the ability of Quick Charge 5 to identify the real capabilities of a power source and adjust charging based on that rather than going with the advertised power source which may be incorrect. Some of the details it can identify include voltage behavior, current behavior, and voltage ranges. There are also several protections; up to 12 voltage, current, and temperature protections built into Quick Charge 5.

Quick Charge 5 is also backward compatible with previous versions up to Quick Charge 2.0. Charging accessories will have a voltage range of 3.3V to 20V and 3A, 5A, and greater than 5A for current. There is also support for USB Power Delivery.

Quick Charge 5 is currently supported by the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 865 Plus Mobile Platforms as well as future premium and top-tier mobile platforms. It is currently in sampling with manufacturers and expected to appear in devices as early as this quarter.

Mid-range processors such as the Snapdragon 765 series, Snapdragon 720G, and Snapdragon 690 are not supported. However, Qualcomm promises that the technology will eventually be available for the mid-range category but just not the current offerings.

Xiaomi has announced that its future devices will support Quick Charge 5.

Quick Charge is Qualcomm’s fast charging technology. The QC 4+ technology is available on mobile platforms like Snapdragon 660, Snapdragon 670, Snapdragon 710 and Snapdragon 845. Fresh information that has surfaced from the recently held Qualcomm’s 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong has revealed that the company is now working on Quick Charge 5.0 that will offer 32W fast charging.

The latest version of Quick Charge carries support for 18W rapid charging. Competitor technologies such as Huawei’s SuperCharge offers up to 40W fast charging, OPPO’s Super VOOC charging supports up to 50W fast charging and mCharge technology from Meizu offers up to 55W rapid charging. According to Qualcomm, its next-generation fast charging technology will be equipped with triple camera system that will allow it to support up to 32W rapid charging and 15W wireless charging. This technology could be called Quick Charge 5.0.

The existing Quick Chare 4+ technology offers Engine Fast Charging system that divides the power line in to two parts instead of one. This allows the phone to prevent overheating while carrying out fast charging.  Also, QC 4+ tech charging keeps the device 3-degree Celsius cooler while charging. It is up to 15 percent faster and 30 percent more efficient than its predecessor. The triple charge system will similarly allow the phone to support 32W rapid charging without getting hot. It is expected to arrive with more advanced features than QC 4+.

It is speculated that the Quick Charge 5.0 will arrive with Snapdragon 855 (or Snapdragon 8150) that may get official by the end of this year. The exact specifications of the chipset are not available. It will be a 7nm SoC that will arrive to rival with other 7nm SoCs like Apple A12 and Kirin 980.
