For Android users, moving a file from one device to another has often felt more complicated than it should. Quick Share aims to eliminate that friction by offering a seamless, cross-platform file transfer tool that just works. Originally split between Google’s Nearby Share and Samsung’s own Quick Share, the two systems merged in early 2024 to create a unified feature that now supports Android phones, Chromebooks, and Windows PCs. It even reaches into iOS, in a limited but very real way.

Quick Share is fast, secure, offline-friendly, and deeply integrated into Android. It’s positioned as a true AirDrop alternative for the Google ecosystem, and with recent expansions, it’s clear this isn’t just about convenience anymore. It’s a step toward breaking down the wall between mobile platforms.

Seamless Transfers, No Internet Required

Quick Share doesn’t rely on mobile data or active Wi-Fi connections. It initiates transfers over Bluetooth and switches to Wi-Fi Direct for the actual file delivery. This ensures high-speed performance, especially when sharing large files like 4K videos, uncompressed images, or multi-gigabyte folders.

Transfers work in environments with no internet access, whether you’re commuting underground, stuck in airplane mode, or somewhere off-grid. The entire process happens locally and uses barely any power. It’s fast, and it doesn’t interrupt the receiving device’s active connections.

Cross-Platform, Finally Done Right

Quick Share supports more than just Android to Android transfers. ChromeOS devices have built-in support, and Windows PCs can access the same feature through an official Quick Share app. Once installed, the app allows drag and drop transfers, push-to-device actions, and access to nearby devices.

Just a few days back, Google made a surprise move by quietly enabling Quick Share to work with Apple’s AirDrop, but only on Pixel 10 devices. When a nearby iPhone has AirDrop set to “Everyone for 10 minutes,” it appears in the Quick Share menu. Tapping the iPhone sends the file directly, just like to another Android phone. No third-party apps, no weird hacks.

Apple didn’t participate in the integration, and Google confirmed it built the feature without any official help. Still, it works. Qualcomm has now confirmed that Snapdragon-powered Android devices will also gain access soon. That means Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and other brands are likely next in line.

Secure and Smart by Design

All transfers are encrypted. Users control who can see their device, either Everyone, Contacts, or Just Your Devices. For sensitive files, Samsung phones include a “Private Sharing” mode that disables screenshots, sets expiration dates, and prevents recipients from saving or resharing content.

Visibility can be set for short periods (10 minutes), and there’s a fallback option when the target device doesn’t appear. Just scan a QR code to begin the transfer. For long-distance sharing, Quick Share can also generate a secure link via the cloud, allowing up to 10GB of content per day.

Samsung’s revamped Quick Share interface is no longer limited to Galaxy devices. Google has started rolling out the updated design to other Android phones, according to a report from Android Authority.

With One UI 8.0, Samsung replaced the old pop-up Quick Share menu with a full-screen layout. The new interface introduces two tabs — Send and Receive — making file transfers easier to understand and manage. This same design is now appearing on select non-Samsung Android devices, though availability varies by region and phone model.

The Send tab lets users preview files before sharing, while the Receive tab makes it clearer how to accept incoming transfers. The update builds on last year’s merger of Nearby Share and Quick Share, which unified Android’s wireless sharing under a single system.

Quick Share now works across all Android brands, Windows devices, and Chromebooks — and Google is even exploring support for Apple’s ecosystem. For people who juggle multiple phones and PCs in their daily life, Quick Share has proven to be a big relief: it’s fast, secure, and built right into Android. The convenience of sharing a file without even touching the receiving device is now getting an upgrade with this quality-of-life redesign.

It’s not yet clear whether older Samsung devices running One UI 7 will see the redesign, but the wider rollout shows Google and Samsung’s ongoing effort to make file sharing on Android simpler and more consistent.

Sharing files between Android and iPhones might soon get easier. Android expert Mishaal Rahman has found a clue suggesting that Google could be preparing to bring its Quick Share file-sharing tool for iOS and macOS.

Quick Share is already popular on Android devices, Chromebooks, and Windows PCs, allowing users to transfer files easily over a secure local network. However, its absence on Apple’s platforms has been a longstanding pain point for users juggling both ecosystems.

Latest API update hints that Quick Share might come to iOS 

That may soon change, though. Quick Share, previously called Nearby Share, uses Google’s Nearby Connections API, a peer-to-peer networking protocol. It’s an open-source API, available on GitHub, so you can track the latest updates Google makes to the platform. According to Rahman, a recent bug fix in the API hints strongly at an iOS expansion.

A comment in Google’s Nearby repository reveals how the app retrieves device names, specifically for iOS and macOS. It states, “For iOS and macOS, the device name is already localized and generally works well for Quick Share purposes… avoid using the non-localized account name and device type concatenation.”

While this comment doesn’t confirm a Quick Share app for iOS or macOS, it stirs speculation. Google could be laying the groundwork for future expansion or even working on a concrete plan for integration with Apple devices.

Integrating Quick Share into Apple’s tightly controlled ecosystem, however, could be challenging. Google might face the App Store’s guidelines and Apple’s strict privacy policies. It’s uncertain whether Google would pursue a standalone app or integrate Quick Share into an existing app like Google Drive or Chrome.

Seamless file sharing might seem simple, but if implemented, Quick Share could offer a fast, hassle-free way to transfer files across platforms, avoiding cumbersome solutions like cloud storage. Google has historically shown more openness to cross-platform collaboration than Apple. If such a bridge between the two tech giants is built, it’s likely Google will take the lead.

Interestingly, OnePlus has already taken steps in this direction. Its latest software update, OxygenOS 15, includes a “Share with iPhone” feature through a dedicated iOS app. While Rahman notes that some users hesitate to add another app, the convenience of smooth file transfers between Android and iPhone might outweigh this concern.

Only time will reveal if Google officially brings Quick Share to iOS and macOS. Although the code change sparks optimism, it’s wise to temper expectations until an official announcement.

Over the past few years, Samsung has introduced security features like Knox and Secure Folder to Galaxy devices. Now the company has announced two new security features to the list – Quick Share Private Sharing and Samsung Cloud Enhanced Data Protection.

Quick Share Private Sharing

This is a built-in “privacy-preserving file-sharing function” that lets you share your data with peace of mind. You don’t have to worry about your files somehow ending up online or visible to anyone other than those you intended.

With this private sharing feature, users can ensure that only the designated recipients can open the files they share. Users can also set permissions and expiration dates for the data, so it’s only viewable for a limited amount of time. In addition to all of that, users can give read-only access without the ability to re-share, revoke the data access whenever they like, restrict screenshotting, and see when the recipient received and opened the file.

This feature allows the user to share up to 20 files at once with a total size of up to 200MB. According to the company, they are using blockchain-based encryption technology for this feature.

To use this feature, users can follow the steps – Select file > Quick Share > Three dots (more options) > Turn on Private sharing. Once the message has been sent, users can check what they’ve sent and change the expiration date or revoke sharing permissions.

Samsung Cloud Enhanced Data Protection

Samsung claims that with its Enhanced Data Protection, users can be confident that their data remains secure in the Samsung Cloud. Starting with the Galaxy S24, Enhanced Data Protection offers additional protection for Galaxy devices when the user data is synced or backed up with Samsung Cloud. It intends to mitigate data loss via end-to-end encryption (E2EE) and ensures that data can only be encrypted or decrypted on the user’s device and cannot be accessed by anyone else. In other words, the user data will remain safe even if the server is compromised or the account details are stolen.

During activation of this feature, users will need to write down a recovery code to help prevent data loss when the device is stolen or damaged. To activate this feature, users can follow the steps – Samsung Cloud > Three dots (more options) > Settings > Enhanced data protection. Alternatively, users can also go to Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Enhanced data protection.

The Samsung Quick Share was first announced for the Windows platform more than 2 years ago. However, this application was only accessible between Samsung branded Windows PCs (Laptops & PCs), tablets, and smartphones. But now, this feature is finally being rolled out to include non-Samsung products as well.

Samsung Quick Share rolling for every Windows PC now

For those unaware, the Quick Share from the South Korean tech giant was exclusive to only Samsung products, so one could not install the app on any other brand’s Windows device. But thankfully, this is changing soon. The company has just released the new Quick Share version v1.4.40 on Windows. With this change, the official update change log states that the app will now support “Windows PCs of other companies.”

Meaning, the Quick Share application can now be installed on non-Samsung branded desktops and laptops. Thanks to this feature, one can seamlessly transfer files and more from your Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet to any of your Windows PCs. But, this Quick Share will only work on Windows devices that feature at least Intel’s Bluetooth driver version 22.50.02 and Intel’s Wi-Fi driver version 22.50.07.

To put it simply, it will only work with these versions and chips from MediaTek or other manufacturers are not supported at the moment. However, its not all bad news considering that Microsoft Phone Link and Google Nearby Share are still viable alternatives. Samsung and Microsoft are long time partners. Recently, they had extended the partnership for further digital transformation in real estate and property management. Now, Samsung is bringing its services to Microsoft’s Windows 10 platform as a report by ALumia says Quick Share, Samsung Free, and Samsung O are coming to the Microsoft store.

Samsung’s Quick Share is an answer to Apple’s AirDrop. It allows seamless sharing of Photos, Videos, and Documents across devices. Now, this App is reportedly appearing on Microsoft Store for a few. Although it is yet to reach everyone, users who have One UI 2.0 and above on Galaxy devices can enjoy this feature.

Once available, you can use the Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth, or Samsung’s SmartThings platform(eligible ones) to share content from Phone to Laptop/Desktop.

In addition to the Quick Share, Windows 10 users will also get other apps like SamsungFree and Samsung O. Here, the Samsung Free was formerly called Samsung Daily. It is like a one-stop-shop for News, TV, and Play.

For the TV section, the App will reportedly show exclusive content that is available on the Samsung TV Plus. For the unware, this video rental service launched in 2016. However, it made the service and expanded to more galaxy phones last year.

The Samsung TV Plus includes a collection of Documentaries, and other entertainment services from over 150 channels. That said, the SamsungFree will also have a News section(News from Various sources compiled), and a Play section(Free Games).

That said, the Samsung O for Windows 10 is currently a mystery. The report says that this could be a clone app of some kind. This service is said to roll out on the Microsoft Store in a few days and let’s wait to find out what it brings to the Windows’ table.

By the time, Google is ready to roll out Nearby Sharing (formerly known as Fast Share), its answer to Apple’s AirDrop feature, half of the mobile industry would have come up with their own version. We already know Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and Realme already formed an alliance to create their own version of AirDrop that will allow users to share files to devices within their range using WiFi and Bluetooth. now, an exclusive report has revealed Samsung has its own version coming too called Quick Share.

An exclusive report by XDA Developers has revealed details about Quick Share which will work on all Samsung smartphones. They were able to get their hands on an APK and have provided details about the new feature.

According to the app description, Quick Share allows you to “Share (files) instantly with people nearby” with a Samsung phone or Samsung tablet. The requirement is that the other person has Quick Share turned on on their device, have their screen on, and visibility switched on.

The Quick Share settings menu has similar features to Google’s Fast Share. When turned on, people can now find you and send files to you. It says, to use Quick Share to send a file in any app, all you have to do is tap share and select Quick Share. This should be as simple as you selecting Bluetooth in the share menu.

There are two options to chose who can share with you. You can choose between “Contacts Only” (limited to only Samsung Social users within your contacts) or “Everyone”. The latter allows anyone near you to be able to share files with you.

Another screenshot from the app shows you can use Quick Share to send files to SmartThings devices. It says the files will be temporarily uploaded to the cloud then streamed to the device. It also states that you will be able to send up to 1GB at a time and a maximum of 2GB per day (this is for SmartThings devices only).

The APK was gotten from a source that has access to the upcoming Galaxy S20+. However, when it was tried on two Samsung devices, it didn’t work. Since the feature is yet to launch, it is understandable why it didn’t work yet.

Quick Share is expected to be officially unveiled next month at the Galaxy Unpacked event. Details about availability for other devices should be revealed then.
