As OPPO had confirmed in the previous week, it has launched the New Year’s editions for OPPO R17 and R17 Pro smartphones through a dedicated event in Shanghai today. In terms of specifications, both phones carry the same specs as their regular versions. However, the R17 and R17 Pro New Year’s Edition have unique design since they sport red bodies that symbolize the New Year.  According to the Chinese calendar, 2019 is the year of pig. Hence, the Chinese manufacturer has engraved a golden logo of a piglet on the bottom of the rear shells of both phones. Also, these phones are running on the specialized designed New Year themed UI.

The glass rears of the OPPO R17 and OPPO R17 Pro New Year’s Edition have warm red color with gradient effect. The paintjob has been inspired by the traditional paper-cutting art of China while the golden of the piglet has a floating effect.

The OPPO R17 New Year’s edition is fitted with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display that produces FHD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. It is fueled by Snapdragon 670 chipset. The waterdrop notch of the display is the home for the front-facing 25-megapixel selfie camera. The rear shell of the phone has a 16-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup. The handset is backed by a 3,500mAh battery and it includes 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Other features of the smartphone include support for VOOC charging and Hyperboost technology.

The OPPO R17 Pro New Year’s edition is equipped with a 6.4-inch AMOLED waterdrop notch screen. It is driven by the Snapdragon 710 chipset. On the front is a selfie shooter of 25-megapixel. A 12-megapixel + 20-megapixel dual camera setup resides on the backside on the backside of the phone. It receives power from 3,700mAh battery and is packed with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage. The OPPO R17 Pro New Year’s edition also features NFC, SuperVOOC charging and HyperBoost technology.

The OPPO R17 New Year’s edition carries a price tag of 2,799 Yuan (~$409) in China. On the other hand, the OPPO R17 Pro New Year’s Edition is priced at 4,299 Yuan (~$624) in the home market. These handsets are China exclusive devices. The official sales of the R17 and R17 New Year’s edition smartphone will begin at 10 AM on Dec. 21. Tomorrow, OPPO will be launching the R17 Pro mid-range smartphone in India. It will be exclusively available through Amazon India. Fresh information reveals that the Chinese manufacturer will be also launching OPPO R17 in the country. There is a slim possibility that the R17 Neo phone that was announced in August in Europe.

According to My Smart Price, the company could be launching the OPPO R17 in India. However, there is no information available on its launch date. Also, it could not be confirmed whether it will be available exclusively through Amazon India.

OPPO R17 is fitted with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display. The waterdrop notch screen produces Full HD+ resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels. The display of the phone is embedded with an in-screen fingerprint scanner like the OPPO R17 Pro. The Snapdragon 670 chip is the heart of the device. It is assisted by 8 GB of RAM. The handset has an inbuilt storage of 128 GB. The second SIM slot of the phone can also be used for adding a microSD card. The 3,500mAh battery carries support for 5V/4A VOOC flash charging.

The backside of the phone is fitted with a dual camera setup which includes a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens as the primary sensor and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The notch houses a 25-megapixel selfie shooter. The handset comes in two colors like Stream Blue and Neon Purple.

The OPPO RX17 Neo features a 6.4-inch S-AMOLED waterdrop notch screen. It also features an in-screen fingerprint reader. The Snapdragon 660 SoC powers the phone along with 4 GB of RAM. It has an internal storage of 128 GB. There is a microSD card slot for additional storage.

The RX17 Neo is fitted with 16-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual camera system. It also features a 25-megapixel selfie shooter. It is packed with a slightly battery of 3,600mAh battery. The R17 and RX17 Neo are both loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo OS.

The OPPO R17 Pro that is launching tomorrow is speculated to be priced at Rs. 44,990 (~$639).The less powerful R17 may arrive in the country with a cheaper price tag than R17.

Back when the OPPO Find X was announced, we hoped that we would see Super VOOC in the company’s first true flagship in a couple of years. We did get this tech but it was unfortunately limited to the Find X Lamborghini edition. Just five months after the official announcement of the R15, this week Oppo unveiled a new upper-midrange device from the R line-up. Despite being released after just a few months, Oppo R17 is a decent upgrade over its predecessor. One of the most important improvements is with regards to its security: now, the latest handset from the R series packs an innovative in-display fingerprint reader. A solution which has been thought for devices with very narrow bezels which cannot include a fingerprint reader on the front side.

Thanks to a new hands on video, we can see the in-display fingerprint reader unlocking the Oppo R17 in a pretty fast and accurate way. The guy in the video touches the lower part of the display with its finger, it gets lightened up and the phone gets unlocked in less than a second. The innovative biometric sensor is clearly slower than traditional fingerprint readers, but it manages to stay pretty fast.

As you can see from the video, it has a minimal notch which only includes the front camera. Oppo R17 is the first smartphone to boast the octa-core Snapdragon 670 chipset by Qualcomm, an underclocked version of the Snapdragon 710 which runs at a max frequency of 2 GHz. Alongside the new chipset, there are whopping 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The company has focused a lot on the camera department with a 16 and 20 MP dual rear camera (f/1.7 aperture) and a 25 MP front camera with a f/2.0 aperture.

The new Oppo R17 comes with a wonderful and clean glass back, as well as an aluminum frame. It has also been launched in stunning gradient hues (stream blue and neon purple). Its display is an OLED panel (the only kind of panel supported by in-display fingerprint readers) with a size of 6.4 inches and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels.
