Samsung has finally launched the much-awaited Galaxy S22 series flagship smartphone that comes running the company’s own One UI 4.1 out-of-the-box based on the Android 12 operating system with a focus on improving user experience.

In line with that, the South Korean tech giant has a new feature to enhance the user experience on these newly launched smartphones by allowing users to configure the amount of virtual memory on the devices.

The company has introduced a feature called RAM Plus for the Galaxy lineup of devices that enables users to increase the amount of RAM to improve the phone’s performance. The amount of virtual RAM can be selected out of four options — 2GB, 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB.

The feature basically allocates some of the phone’s storage phone as virtual RAM. This is similar to Windows allocating a portion of disk storage to use as virtual RAM for a scenario where the physical RAM is insufficient.

Although the feature isn’t new, the Galaxy phones were limited to using only 4GB of storage as virtual RAM but with the One UI 4.1, the company is now allowing the users to choose up to 8GB in case that much memory is needed.

It’s noteworthy that the 4GB storage is selected by default to be used as virtual RAM and while users can change the configuration, there’s no option for disabling this feature on the Samsung Galaxy devices.

Almost all popular Android OEMs now offer a virtual RAM feature. Samsung was the last company to join the bandwagon very recently with the launch of Galaxy A52s 5G. The South Korean tech giant calls its implementation ‘RAM Plus’. The feature is now being rolled out to the Galaxy A52.

A few hours back, Samsung started seeding October 2021 security patches for the Galaxy A52. According to SamMobile, this system update also brings the ‘RAM Plus’ feature.

Hence, users who have updated to the latest firmware now have an increased amount of RAM on their unit. To check whether they have got the feature, users will have to navigate to Settings > Battery and device care > Memory.

Unlike Chinese OEMs, Samsung allows users to neither disable the virtual RAM feature nor change the amount of RAM. If a device adds support for RAM Plus, the feature remains turned on permanently. Also, the company only offers an additional 4GB of RAM.

Since virtual RAM uses the handset’s internal storage, users will lose some amount of memory.  It would be better if Samsung provided more opinions for RAM Plus like the competition.

Samsung RAM Plus is expected to reach more Galaxy devices via OTA software updates.

The Galaxy A52s was made official in August. It debuted as the company’s first phone with RAM Plus feature. It is nothing but Samsung’s version for virtual or extended RAM. It appears other phones from Samsung will also receive the RAM Plus feature.

RAM Plus allocates some amount of space from the internal storage to be used as virtual RAM. According to Sammobile, the RAM Plus feature was recently added to the Galaxy A52 handset through a software update. It added that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 also now offers the extended RAM functionality. The Fold 3 did not launch with the feature, but it was added through one of the recent software updates.

The One UI 4.0 beta-based Android 12 update that is now available for Galaxy S21 series does not include the RAM Plus feature. It remains to be seen whether it will be made available on the final stable version or through future updates.

The RAM Plus features add 4GB of virtual RAM to the device. At present, it does not allow users to turn off this feature. In addition, there is no way to increase or decrease the size of the RAM Plus. Other brands like Realme allow users to customize the amount of virtual RAM. Hopefully, the South Korean company will let users to increase/decrease RAM Plus size in the future.

Users of Samsung phones can check whether they have received the RAM Plus feature by going to the Settings app. Navigate to Battery and device care, and then tap on Memory.
