<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motorola</a> has a history of being slow with software updates for its devices. The company has been aggressive in offering the best hardware features for the price, but it often overlooks the importance of regular software updates for ensuring long-term usability and security. And the trend holds true across all their devices, whether they are budget-friendly or flagship models.</p>

<p>For instance, the Motorola Razr 2023 foldables were launched with Android 13 and have remained on this older version until recently. Fortunately, there are now reports confirming that Motorola has started rolling out the Android 14 update for these phones.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-Peach-Fuzz-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" /></figure></div>

<p>Initially surfaced on <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/razr/comments/1duszym/i_finally_got_the_android_14_update_on_my_razr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reddit </a>and later confirmed by tech blogs like <a href="http://9to5google.com/2024/07/05/motorola-razr-2023-android-14-update/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">9to5Google</a>, the update brings Android 14 and the May 2024 security patch to previous Razr and Razr+ models. Razr+ users also get a few new features for the external cover screen like Always On Display (AOD) functionality.</p>

<p>However, before getting too excited know that this update doesn’t seem to be reaching everyone just yet. It appears to be a phased rollout, meaning some users might have the update available while others don&#8217;t. It&#8217;s likely just a waiting game until it reaches all compatible devices.</p>

<p>Currently, the focus appears to be on the US market. Users outside the US may have to wait a bit longer. There’s also a <a href="http://help.motorola.com/hc/5508/14/global/en-us/?t=CG0608830866" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">support page</a> on Motorola’s official website for the update, but the international rollout hasn&#8217;t started yet.</p>

<p>This slow update strategy comes almost nine months after Google released Android 14 for Pixel phones. While Motorola should be acknowledged for eventually delivering the update, the slow rollout and lack of clear communication leave much to be desired.</p>

<p>With all this talk about Android 14, it&#8217;s natural to wonder about the upcoming Android 15. With its release seemingly on the horizon, the question remains: will the Razr and Razr+ receive this update, and if so, when?</p>

<p>Annually, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motorola</a> partners with Pantone to unveil smartphones featuring precise, Pantone-validated colors. In the current year, the company introduced a lineup of devices in Viva Magenta, Pantone&#8217;s designated color for 2023. Now, Motorola has released two of its devices in Peach Fuzz, the color chosen by Pantone as the 2024 Color of the Year. These two models are the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/motorola-razr-40-ultra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Moto Razr 40 Ultra</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/motorola-edge-40-neo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Edge 40 Neo</a>, which now come in Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="418" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/GAwKHiRbcAA6oiK.png?x44794" alt="motorola razr 40 ultra and edge 40 neo Peach Fuzz" class="wp-image-588878" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/GAwKHiRbcAA6oiK.png 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/GAwKHiRbcAA6oiK-300x157.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/GAwKHiRbcAA6oiK-768x401.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/GAwKHiRbcAA6oiK-696x364.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<p>Motorola&#8217;s Head of Customer Experience and Design, Ruben Castano, emphasizes the significance of color in the evolving partnership with Pantone. Castano notes that as technology becomes deeply integrated into human experiences, color serves as a tool for expression and meaningful interactions, extending beyond physical devices into software. He highlights the Pantone Color of the Year 2024, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, for seamlessly blending the virtual and real worlds, aligning with Motorola&#8217;s vision of fostering deeper connections and well-being.</p>

<p>Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, expresses satisfaction with the collaboration, commending Motorola&#8217;s commitment to enabling creativity, connection, and personalization through color across their devices. She underscores the significance of PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, stating that it embodies connection, community, and personal well-being. Pressman anticipates that the color, tailored for the physicality of digital devices, will enhance the user experience, leveraging Motorola&#8217;s features to facilitate meaningful connections. The statements collectively highlight the shared goal of integrating color to enhance technology&#8217;s impact on human connection, personal expression, and well-being.</p>

<p>There isn&#8217;t any change in the pricing of these devices for the new color option. Other than Peach Fuzz, the Razr 40 Ultra comes in Glacier Blue, Infinite Black, and Viva Magenta colors, and the Edge 40 Neo in Caneel Bay, Black Beauty, and Soothing Sea colors.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motorola</a> released the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/motorola-razr-40-ultra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Razr 40 Ultra</a> in June, followed closely by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>&#8216;s Z Flip 5 in July, creating a short one-month gap between the launches. These two phones are currently the hottest clamshell phones.</p>

<p>Reports indicate that the majority of people choosing foldable phones favor clamshell phones, particularly among females. So I guess this is the right opportunity to give you an informed decision about which phone you should go with. Let’s delve into the details.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-1024x576.png?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Motorola Razr 40 Ultra" class="wp-image-564135" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-vs-Galaxy-Z-Flip-5.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<h2>Display and Design</h2>

<p>Both the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5</a> and Motorola Razr 40 Ultra look similar as they are clamshell phones, but they also have noticeable differences. The Razr 40 Ultra features larger <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amoled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMOLED</a> screens, boasting a 6.9-inch main screen with a 165 Hz refresh rate compared to the Z Flip 5&#8217;s 6.7-inch screen with 120 Hz. Both support HDR10+ and have the same resolution.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="925" height="860" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip-5.jpg?x44794" alt="galaxy-z-flip-5" class="wp-image-564128" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip-5.jpg 925w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip-5-300x279.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip-5-768x714.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip-5-696x647.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip-5-452x420.jpg 452w" sizes="(max-width: 925px) 100vw, 925px" /></figure></div>

<p>Externally, the Razr 40 Ultra&#8217;s 3.6-inch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/display/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">display</a> is larger and offers smoother animations, although it&#8217;s partially obstructed by camera lenses. The Z Flip 5 uses a folder-shaped 3.4-inch display to avoid camera interference, but the Razr&#8217;s design seems more integrated.</p>

<p>Motorola leads in screen size, resolution, and refresh rate, but the Flip has superior peak brightness, making it better for outdoor usage. While the Razr can run apps on its external display directly, the Flip requires adjustments to do so.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="563" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-Build.jpg?x44794" alt="Motorola Razr 40 Ultra build" class="wp-image-564127" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-Build.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-Build-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-Build-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-Build-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-Build-746x420.jpg 746w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure></div>

<p>Both phones aim for a compact and premium feel. The Razr 40 Ultra measures 170.8 x 74 x 7 mm and weighs 185g, while the Z Flip 5 is slightly heavier at 187g but slimmer at 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm.</p>

<p>A YouTuber&#8217;s test revealed that the Z Flip 5&#8217;s hinge endured more than 2,67,000 folds, surpassing the Razr 40 Ultra&#8217;s hinge durability of 1,26,367 folds.</p>

<p>The Z Flip 5 also has an IPX8 water resistance rating, while the Razr has an IP52 rating for dust resistance.</p>

<p>Although the Razr 40 Ultra has certain advantages, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 excels in overall usage and checks all the boxes. Therefore, my recommendation would be to choose the Flip 5.</p>

<h2>Performance &amp; Software</h2>

<p>Coming to performance, both devices pack a punch. The Razr 40 Ultra is equipped with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, ensuring a smooth user experience. However, the Z Flip5, with its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-8-gen-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snapdragon 8 Gen 2</a>, offers a slight edge in speed.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="563" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-gaming.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-564126" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-gaming.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-gaming-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-gaming-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-gaming-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra-gaming-746x420.jpg 746w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure></div>

<p>Storage-wise, the Z Flip 5 offers 8GB RAM and up to 512GB of the fast UFS 4.0 storage. The Razr 40 Ultra matches the 8GB RAM but provides only 256GB of the slightly slower UFS 3.1 storage.</p>

<p>On the software front, both phones use Android 13. However, Samsung&#8217;s Z Flip 5 has their custom OneUI which is tuned for foldable phones and offers up to four major Android updates. The Razr 40 Ultra keeps things simple with a near-stock Android look and commits to three major Android updates. This segment is very subjective but personally, I would lean towards One UI here.</p>

<h2>Camera</h2>

<p>Both the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 are equipped with dual-camera systems. The Razr 40 Ultra features a 12MP wide sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide lens, while also boasting a 32MP front camera. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with dual 12MP rear sensors (wide and ultra-wide) and a 10MP front camera. On paper, the Razr seems superior, especially in the selfie department.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="878" height="1024" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera-878x1024.jpg?x44794" alt="Moto Razr 40 Ultra camera" class="wp-image-564131" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera-878x1024.jpg 878w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera-257x300.jpg 257w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera-768x896.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera-696x812.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera-1068x1246.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera-360x420.jpg 360w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Moto-Razr-40-Ultra-camera.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 878px) 100vw, 878px" /></figure></div>

<p>However, real-world performance tells a different story. The Razr&#8217;s camera often produces unsatisfactory photos with issues like blown-out colors and blurry images sometimes. Long-range shooting is subpar, and zooming beyond 3x leads to unsatisfactory color quality in images. According to our YT Editor, the Razr 40 Ultra&#8217;s camera performs slightly better than typical $300 phones.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="672" height="608" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip5-camera.jpg?x44794" alt="galaxy-z-flip-5-camera" class="wp-image-564130" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip5-camera.jpg 672w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip5-camera-300x271.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/galaxy-z-flip5-camera-464x420.jpg 464w" sizes="(max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px" /></figure></div>

<p>In contrast, the Flip 5, building on Samsung&#8217;s camera expertise, delivers clearer and more consistent shots, outdoing the Razr with ease.</p>

<p>A notable feature of both devices is the ability to use the main camera for selfies, thanks to their design. Here, the Flip 5 takes the lead again, making it the better choice for photography enthusiasts.</p>

<h2>Battery &amp; Charging</h2>

<p>The Galaxy Z Flip 5 packs a 3700mAh <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/battery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">battery</a>, slightly smaller than the Razr 40 Ultra&#8217;s 3800mAh. Both phones offer roughly a day&#8217;s battery life, with the Flip 5 showing slight improvements over its predecessor. When it comes to charging, the Razr 40 Ultra supports 30W wired and 5W wireless charging.</p>

<p>In contrast, the Flip 5 offers 25W wired charging and a better 15W wireless charging. Neither phone excels in charging speeds, but they serve the basic needs adequately. Overall, while the Razr has a marginally bigger battery, the Flip 5 offers slightly faster wireless charging.</p>

<h2>Pricing</h2>

<p>The Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/29/huawei-mate-60-pro-launched-in-china/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">$999.99 with 256GB storage</a>. A higher storage variant, 512GB, is available for $1119.99. On the other side, the Razr 40 Ultra, also known as Razr+ in the US, <a href="https://geni.us/Ge40x31">is priced at $999.99</a> and offers 256GB storage with no other storage options.</p>

<h2>Verdict</h2>

<p>While Motorola&#8217;s Razr 40 Ultra impressed with its stylish design and better screen, Samsung&#8217;s Z Flip 5 has taken the lead with superior performance, memory, and longer software support.</p>

<p>If you want a trendy look, go for the Razr. For top-notch performance and updates, choose the Z Flip 5. Both have their merits, but the Z Flip 5 seems like a wiser choice in the long run.</p>
