The young brand, Realme, has given us a lot of surprises since its establishment. It first started out as a smartphone manufacturer, but now the brand is ambitiously expanding to markets beyond smartphones. In 2021, it has launched a bunch of new products in new categories. The Realme Book, the brand’s first-ever laptop product, was recently announced with incredible value for money. To achieve its very first step in the market, the Realme Book targets the affordable market, where things are highly competitive. Since we’ve seen so many excellent manufacturers splitting up a large chunk of this market, we are curious whether the Realme Book can stand out from the crowd and win its own position. Just follow our review and find out the answer.

Realme Book Slim Review: Design

At first glance, the Realme Book did impress us with its great build quality. Since these days even affordable laptops have a similar design to other premium laptops, the real differentiating factor lies in the laptop’s attention to detail and build quality. In this regard, the Realme Book is one of the most impressive models in its price range. The laptop’s design looks clean and highly integrated, thanks to the whole metal body.

The smooth aluminum alloy feels pretty premium with a united matte finish, which would not only prevent from getting fingerprints stains and dust but also theoretically ensures stable performance, due to its good heat dissipation.

Known as Realme Book Slim, the Realme Book also brings an ultra-slim design with 14.9mm thickness (thickest point: 15.5mm). Matching with the front size of 307 x 229mm and the weight of 1.48kg (1.38kg for the 8G version), the compact laptop is pretty good for portable use. But surprisingly, in the compact body (a common size for a 13-inch notebook), Realme installed a 14-inch 2K IPS display with a resolution of 2160 x 1440. Except for the bottom frame with the realme logo, the three bezels (left & right: 5.3mm) around the panel are quite narrow (Screen-to-body ratio: 90%), which makes the display look much more stunning than most of its competitors.

However, the compact design forces some compromises. The number of available ports probably won’t please some users. There’s only one USB 3.0 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the right side. On the other side, the laptop offers a Thunderbolt 4 (charging port) and another USB-C 3.2 port.

To fix that, an additional interface dock may be needed with the Realme Book.

In addition, the included 65W PD charger also applies a compact design for ease of carrying, which, more importantly, can be shared for charging both the laptop and your smartphone with a USB-C charging port.

The keyboard layout of the Realme Book uses large keycaps that feature good travel at 1.3mm. The keys offer a pretty fast and smooth response without producing much noise while typing. But for some users who require a strong rebound, the typing experience may not be so pleasurable. The keys are backlit and Realme offers two levels of brightness for users under different situations.

The large touchpad below the keyboard is one of my favorite points. It provides an ample touch area which is also responsive and smooth. And during our limited experience, we didn’t face any mistouches.

Realme Book Slim Display & Speakers

Let’s take a closer look at the 14-inch display. Honestly, the display of the Realme Book is one of the top options we can find at this price. It supports up to 100% sRGB gamut with outstanding color accuracy (actual test: ΔE=1.45), which is pretty close to some professional monitors for image processing. As an office-work or business model, the 3:2 aspect ratio is also a better option than the 16:9. The most intuitive experience is that it can display multiple tasks more comfortably.

The only unfortunate limitation is the 400-nit max brightness, which isn’t really enough for use under bright ambient light.

For audio, the Realme Book is equipped with dual Harman-tuned speakers with the support of DTS Stereo Surround Sound technology. The actual audio sound is loud and rich. Although it still is not comparable to some premium models, it’s already better than most options at the price point.

Realme Book Slim Performance & Gaming Review

As a competitive laptop taking aim at good productivity, the Realme Book has offered the best that it can at this price. The whole lineup of the Realme Book is powered by the 11th-gen Intel Core processors, but you only have Core i3-1115G4 and a Core i5-1135G7 for options. The model in our hand is an Intel i5 version with 16GB LPDDR4X RAM and 512GB PCIe SSD ROM, which is also the top configuration of the lineup.

In AIDA64’s stress test (FPU stress test), this i5’s single-core frequency could reach up to 4.2GHz, which would be a remarkable improvement for heavy productivity uses. During the stress test, the laptop had sustained high-performance output with excellent cooling capacity, which thanks to the cooling system mainly constituted by dual fans inside the body and the connection with dual 8mm-diameter heat pipes. And notably, the cooling system stayed pretty quiet and didn’t produce unacceptable noise.

Another important detail reflected in the test is that the CPU could run up to 28W TDP. Considering it comes with Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics instead of separate Graphics, it’s the best performance that the i5-1135G7 CPU can achieve.

In PCMark 10, the Realme Book scored 4766, where it got 9628 for the Essentials Test, and got 6437 for the productivity test. In another Benchmark, CineBench R20, the CPU of the laptop scored 2192, which is a pretty good result among all the i5-1135G7 models.

As for gaming, we chose to run FPS Test of the game CS:GO on the Realme Book. The laptop could achieve an average framerate of 50fps under the game’s 1080P high graphics. And under low graphics, the framerate could stably maintain at 55-60fps.

To summarize the results in different benchmarks, we’re quite sure that the Realme Book is sufficient to meet the general needs of office productivity and light entertainment, while running heavy-loaded games is still a bit of a struggle.

Although the Realme Book is the brand’s first laptop coming with Windows 10 system pre-installed, the brand promised that the lineup is in the first list of laptops to be updated with Windows 11.

In addition, Realme pre-installed an exclusive application to achieve seamless collaboration with a Realme Phone. The PC-Phone Connect application allows to seamlessly mirror the phone screen to the notebook where users easily share and open files on the phone with PC programs. But just note that it’s compatible only with Realme GT series for now.

Realme Book Slim Battery Life Review

The Realme Book is equipped with a 54Wh battery. Realme claimed, under office use, the notebook could last for 8.5 hours. But in our actual uses, it was around 1 hour less than its claimed battery life, which is probably because we added up more usage scenarios like web-surfing and streaming video playback. Nevertheless, considering its slim body, such battery performance is still impressive.

Last but not least, we have a reminder for users who are going to buy a Core i3 configuration of the Realme Book. The i3 variant doesn’t support the latest Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, the ultra-high-speed of Thunderbolt 4 port, or even the new WiFi 6 network. Considering the absence of Core i7 configuration, we highly recommend going for the Core i5 version of the Realme Book if you are attracted by the beautiful price and its powerful performance.

Realme Book Slim: Verdict

As Realme’s first entry into the notebook market, the Realme Book surprisingly shows its mature product power. The optimized Core i5-1135G7 processor plus up to 16GB RAM and 512GB ROM brought back the smooth experience to budget notebooks. Unlike those mid-rangers using an MX450 independent Graphics as a gimmick (bringing very limited improvement and serious power and heated issues), it emphasizes the balance of good portability, stable performance and overall power consumption.

While taking the attractive price into account, it’s definitely one of the best options for portable productivity and light entertainment for the price.

A few days ago, after teasing it for several weeks, OPPO-backed Realme officially expanded its portfolio of devices by launching its first-ever laptop in several different markets, dubbed Realme Book.

Today (on 25th August), the newly launched laptop officially went on sale in the brand’s home country China and the company has reported impressive sales numbers for the first-ever sale of the Realme Book.

Realme claims that it managed to sell Realme Book units worth more than 10 million yuan in the first sale in China, that too within five minutes. The numbers include sales registered on the company’s own online store as well as JD.com and Huantai Mall.

In China, the Realme Book comes in two models — Core i5 + 8GB RAM + 512GB SSD costing 4,299 yuan (~$664) and Core i5 + 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD which is priced at 4,699 yuan (~$725) but has a limited period promotional price of 4,299 yuan.

The Realme Book comes with a metallic body, a mirror brand logo, and the front sporting a backlit keyboard. The laptop weighs just 1.38 kgs and measures a slim 14.9mm and comes in two color options — Real Blue and Real Grey.

It is powered by the 11th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, coupled with up to 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 512GB of PCIe SSD storage. For graphics, the notebook sports Intel’s Iris Xe graphics and is running the Windows 10 operating system out-of-the-box but will support Windows 11 in the future.

The device is powered by a 54Whr battery and comes with support for 65W super-fast charging. The company has promised 11 hours of battery life and says that just 30 minutes of charging can bring the battery up to 50 percent.

There is no shortage of laptops to choose from if you are on the lookout for a computer. However, that is not stopping new players from entering the market. The latest brand to join the PC market is Realme with its Realme Book Slim announced today. The notebook has an interesting design and pretty great specs.

If you are wondering how it measures up to laptops from competitors, then you are at the right place as we will be comparing the Realme Book Slim to the RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition, RedmiBook 15 Pro, and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition.

Build

The Realme Book Slim and Mi Notebook Horizon Edition are the only two models with an aluminum body. They are also the lightest, which is no surprise since they are both 14-inch computers.

While Xiaomi (and Redmi) are offering their PCs in just one colorway, Realme provides two, one of which is an eye-catching blue.

Display size

All four notebooks use an LCD display but the Realme Book Slim which has a 14-inch panel has a higher 2K resolution. However, its viewing angle of 170° is lesser than the 178° the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition boasts of.

Processor and RAM

The Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition is the only one of the four computers with a 10th gen processor, although it is a Core-i7 processor. The advantage it has over the 11th gen CPUs is its lower TDP which should translate to longer battery life. However, Realme cancels this out by shipping its computer with a bigger battery capacity.

The Realme Book Slim also uses a faster type of RAM than the other computers.

GPU

This is one area where the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition shines. Unlike the other computers with an integrated GPU, it also packs a dedicated GPU via the NVIDIA GeForce MX350. This gives it an added boost in graphic performance and multitasking.

Ports and Connectivity

Xiaomi and Redmi have stuck to USB-A ports for their computers. There are ample ports on all three of them, so you should not need a dock. However, if a USB-C port is important to you, you won’t find them on any of these computers.

Realme, on the other hand, goes for fewer ports, though you do get two USB-C ports that serve for charging and display output. There is no LAN port, so if you require this, you will have to get a dock. The Core i5 version of the Realme Book Slim has a Thunderbolt 4 port that also doubles as a USB 4 port, so you can output 2 x 4K displays at the same time. Realme also gets a plus with the addition of the much faster Wi-Fi 6 and also Bluetooth 5.2.

Battery life and fast charging

The Realme Book Slim boasts up to 11 hours of battery life which is just a little over the 10 hours the other devices claim. All four ship with a 65W adapter, but Realme’s own is a USB-C charger which should also work for your phone. All four boast of fast charging – up to 50% in about half an hour.

Additional features

The Realme Book Slim has extra features such as a backlit keyboard with three levels of brightness and a fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button. There is also PC Connect, a feature that allows you to connect your compatible phone with your PC. Users will be able to preview notifications, open their mobile apps on their PC, and also transfer files from one device to the other by dragging and dropping. They can also use a shared clipboard feature for copying and pasting text from one device to the other.

Price

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition is the cheapest of them all, which is no surprise since it uses an 11th Gen Core i3 processor. However, the Realme Book Slim’s Core i3 equivalent costs a few thousand more and justifies the increase with features such as a backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner, Wi-Fi 6, and a sharper display.

The importance of the aforementioned features and a Thunderbolt 4 port also comes into consideration when comparing the higher-specced Realme Book Slim to the RedmiBook 15 Pro. Are these features worth the extra ₹10,000 or not?

The Mi Horizon Edition Notebook sits in a tricky spot with its older processor and lack of an integrated webcam. It costs ₹4,999 more than the RedmiBook Pro and for that, you get a dedicated GPU and an aluminum build.

Conclusion

All of these computers are great options for anyone with a budget of ₹60,000, but they might not necessarily be the best. They do have their individual strengths and weaknesses which will determine which one of them you decide to go for.

The Realme Book Slim has a better display, a fingerprint scanner, and a backlit keyboard. There is also Wi-Fi 6, and its slim and lightweight design will also appeal to a lot of people. However, its limited number of ports means you will need to get a dock that adds the ports you need which is an extra purchase on top of a device that already costs more.

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition doesn’t look as good and is also heavier but has the same processor as the base model of the Realme Book Slim for a lower price tag. It also has all the ports you may need. Even the 512GB version costs less than the Realme Book Slim.

The RedmiBook 15 Pro has all the features of the RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition including its demerits (no backlit keyboard, no USB-C, and no fingerprint scanner) but adds a more powerful processor and 512GB of storage. So you get an identical performance to the Core i5 version of the Realme Book Slim but for significantly less.

The Mi Notebook Horizon Edition is the other option for those who want a lightweight computer with a metallic build. It costs a lot more than the Redmi notebooks and has a less powerful processor but its dedicated RAM may appeal to casual gamers.

Realme is slated to launch its first laptop in India and Europe on August 18th. Ahead of its launch, the device appeared in multiple leaks and a few certifications leaving us with some of its details. Now, Realme itself came online teasing key details about the upcoming Realme Book Slim laptop’s specifications.

Earlier, it was confirmed that the Realme Book Slim will come powered by Intel’s 11th generation processor. Now, the teaser confirms that it will be an i5 CPU. Additionally, the teaser reveals that the laptop will feature a 3:2 screen ratio with 2K(2160 x 1440 pixels) resolution. Notably, the display will have thin bezels and will be quite slim. It is also confirmed to have a 100% sRGB color gamut.

Moreover, Realme recently shared a poster that flaunted an important feature of the laptop. The Realme Book Slim will come with Realme’s PC Connect feature which will let users mirror their Realme phone’s screen on the laptop.

The Realme Book is expected to feature a design similar to the Apple MacBook Air. A few images of the upcoming notebook have leaked online, which seems to confirm the similarity with Apple’s laptop. The device is also likely to have a metal build, giving it a premium look and feel.

The official teaser from the company showcased the laptop in the Real Gray color variant, but a leak has revealed that the product will be available in several color options, including Real Red, Real Blue, and Real Apricot – all of them having a matte finish.

Through a teaser video shared on Twitter, Realme has already confirmed that the upcoming laptop from the brand will support Windows 11 operating system. However, since Microsoft is yet to release the stable build of the new OS, it’s likely that the device will come pre-installed with the Windows 10 operating system.

The teaser from the company confirms that it will definitely be compatible with the new Windows 11 and will get the new update when it gets released. Support for Windows 11 also means that the device will be able to natively run Android apps, which can be downloaded through Amazon’s App Store.

The device could also come with support for a feature called “PC Connect” enabling users to control their phones from their computers. This is similar to Huawei MultiScreen, Samsung DeX, and OPPO’s newly introduced Cross-Screen Interconnection.

Pricing and Availability

The Realme Book will be announced during the Realme 828 fan festival in China on 18th August at 3:00 PM local time. It is not yet known how many models of the laptop will be launched at the event in China.

If the reports are to be believed, then the Realme Book Slim is expected to go official in India on the same day. It is rumored to be priced around ₹55,000 in the Indian market, which is roughly $740.

On the same day, the company will be launching the Realme GT series smartphones in India. We expect the laptop to be available for purchase soon after getting launched.

Realme could be close to the official launch of its latest super-slim and lightweight laptop, the Realme Book Slim. A tipster, Yogesh has provided some detailed specifications of the device. The details are the most comprehensive yet we have seen for the device.

We already knew that Realme was working on a new laptop slated for unveiling later this year. But little was known about the device, with official Realme teasers not yielding the expected details. However, all these have changed if we are to rely on the authenticity of the tipster’s information.

The Realme Book Slim will sport a 14-inch 2K display with a decent 2160×1440 pixels screen resolution and 300 nits peak brightness. Realme has taken serious considerations for eye safety by getting blue light certification for the device. The audio input and output functionalities are enhanced by a triple microphone setup and two Harmon Kardon speakers.

The Realme Book Slim will be powered by Intel’s Core i5 processor and Xe Graphics. The laptop is lightweight (1.3kg) and packs 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. There is also a fingerprint sensor and a 54Wh battery with support for 65W fast charging. Realme TechLife today shared a teaser on Twitter that shows the device will charge via a USB-C port. Apart from the USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, it will also feature 2 USB-C 3.1 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The tipster indicated that the Realme Book Slim will be priced at Rs. 55,000 ($741) in India although the exact launch date is still not known. The Realme Book Slim could debut with the upcoming Realme Pad. We await more definitive teasers on the Realme Book Slim as its launch date gets closer.
