Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme has marked a significant achievement by shipping over 200 million phones since its inception a little over five years ago. The company, a part of BBK Electronics, has reached the milestone in the second quarter of this year.

Realme counts among the top 10 smartphone brands out of 250 in existence

Realme GT 5 Pro live shot

Data from Counterpoint Research reveals that Realme is the fifth fastest smartphone maker to achieve this feat, following Vivo, Huawei, Samsung, and Apple.

Most notably, Realme has achieved this milestone with most of the shipments in markets outside China. Not to mention, the company has become a global player in the competitive smartphone industry, and its rapid growth has positioned it among the top smartphone brands.

Xu Qi, Chief Marketing Officer at Realme, expressed pride in the company’s accomplishments, stating, “We came into existence when there were over 700 smartphone brands in the world. We are extremely proud that we have been able to be in the world’s top 10 brands for the past five years.”

Data from Counterpoint Research also highlights that the number of phone brands has reduced from over 700 in 2017 to around 250 in September. Realme’s ability to not only survive but thrive in this competitive environment underscores its strategic approach.

Currently, Realme is gearing up to compete in the premium smartphone segment with its upcoming release, the Realme GT 5 Pro. This device will be among the first smartphones to feature Qualcomm’s latest high-end chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and Sony’s new Lytia camera sensor.

In comparison, Xiaomi has recently unveiled the Xiaomi 14 Pro, which also runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, highlighting the intense competition and technological advancements within the smartphone industry. As Realme celebrates its achievement, it remains a dynamic player to watch in the ever-evolving smartphone market.

This milestone underscores Realme’s commitment to delivering quality devices and its ability to navigate a dynamic industry landscape, setting the stage for further accomplishments in the future.

As per the senior official, even the 10 million shipment figure was actually ‘conservative’ and that the Chinese tech giant is expecting at least 20 million units in sales in 2021. Furthermore, the goal to reach this high figure will be supplemented by the company’s efforts to boost its offline sales. This would be made possible as the smartphone vendor aims to expand the number of its physical stores in its home market of China to expand its coverage.

During the event, Xu Qi also announced that the company’s sales of smartphone in the first quarter of this year is nearly the same as its overall smartphone sales from last year. This marks an year on year increase of 463 percent in Q1 2021. Meaning, Realme has seen an explosive growth, especially in the Chinese market. The executive also added that the brand is aiming to triple its offline sales figure this year.

Notably, the OEM is also planning on following a dual flagship strategy. This implies that the firm will launch two flagship grade smartphones this year. The same strategy will also be adopted for its mid range segments. For the high end devices, the company will launch one smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 series processor while the second one would sport a MediaTek Dimensity series 5G chipset.

Within this time span, it has grown from a small-time sub-brand of OPPO to one of the most sought out smartphone makers in the budget and mid-range segment. And turns out, it has got sales figures to back its popularity. According to counterpoint’s Q2-2019 Market Monitor report, Realme has climbed into the top 10 smartphone OEM club.

Realme 5 Pro

For a company that came into existence just last year, this is indeed a tremendous achievement. However, this isn’t entirely surprising. Realme had announced earlier this month that they had shipped more than 10 million smartphones worldwide in a matter of 14 months.

Editor’s Pick: MediaTek Helio G90T vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G: Gaming Chipsets Compared!

The company’s Realme 3 Pro that was announced back in April offers good value for money in the mid-range market, taking on the Redmi Note 7 Pro. The company has plans to ramp up its progress in India and China with additional models in the next few months. The brand has already released the Realme 5 Pro which is its first quad-camera smartphone! Then there’s the upcoming Realme XT that will feature the Samsung GW1 64MP sensor directly taking on the Redmi Note 8 Pro with the same sensor.

With so many powerful models incoming for the mid-range segment, the company seems to have some really strong plans to take on the Redmi brand in the budget and the mid-range market. If Realme can grab even a small chunk of this market from Redmi, it is all set to sell a few more million smartphone units by the end of the year.

Last month, the company had revealed that it had hit the one million sales mark in just four months after it started selling Realme 1 and two weeks of Realme 2 launch.

The company, which started off as a sub-brand of Oppo and recently split from its parent company to operate as an independent brand, recently launched Realme 2 Pro and Realme C1. The devices were available for purchase in Flipkart’s Big Billion Days sale, during which , the company claims to have sold over one million phones.

Along with that, the company also claims that it managed to sell 110,000 units of Realme C1 entry-level smartphone in just one second during Flipkart’s sale. With such sales record, the company claims to have become the number two smartphone brand during the sale, just behind Xiaomi.

In a press statement, Realme India Chief Executive Officer Madhav Sheth said:

Realme has secured No. 2 position on Flipkart but still we think we underestimated the love and expectations our fans have shown. I’m also happy to announce that Realme 2 has even crossed 1 million sales in just 40 days and even now ranked the highest rating in 10K segment. I’m proud to say there is truly a Realme for every Indian.

During the Flipkart sale, two devices from Realme were made available for purchase — Realme 2 Pro and Realme C1. While the Realme 2 Pro takes on the likes of Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, Motorola One Power, Nokia 6.1 Plus, and Xiaomi Mi A2, among others, the Realme C1 competes against the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 6A.

The Realme C1 is priced at Rs. 6,999 that roughly converts to $95, while the pricing for Realme 2 Pro starts at Rs. 13,990 (approximately $189) for the base model that packs 4GB RAM. It is also available in two other variants, packing 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM, costing Rs. 15,990 (~$216) and Rs. 17,990 (~$243) respectively.
