Realme was recently accused of collecting personal user data through a Realme UI 4.0 feature known as  “Enhanced Intelligent Services.” The description of this feature explicitly mentions that it collects data like device information, app usage statistics, location data, calendar events, and statistics related to SMS messages and calls. What really sparked the controversy was the fact that this feature came enabled by default.

Rajeev Chandrashekar, Union Minister of Electronics and Technology said that the government would investigate and verify the claims. Realme later clarified that the feature is there for optimization purposes and the data in question is stored and processed locally. Now, Realme has rolled out a new update for the newly launched Realme 11 Pro 5G and Realme 11 Pro+ 5G which disables this option. The updates come with firmware version RMX3771_13.1.0.524(EX01) and RMX3741_13.1.0.524(EX01).

The update improves system stability and optimizes the power consumption of the camera. In order to prevent additional controversy, the update has also revised the “Enhanced Intelligent Services” feature’s description and has turned it off by default. The description now says that the feature focuses solely on improving the user experience by analyzing device usage patterns. Regarding the optimized charging functionality, it will now utilize local data and app usage statistics directly on the device, while obtaining permission for location information.

A comparable update is anticipated for other Realme devices operating on Realme UI 4.0, as well as devices from sister brands such as OnePlus and Oppo running Android 13. This forthcoming update is expected to modify the language describing this feature and also disable it by default. Reports from users indicate that this feature has been observed on devices from these brands.

Given the Indian government’s past actions of banning numerous China-based apps due to data privacy concerns, this situation could potentially escalate into a significant issue for the Realme brand.

Realme has promptly responded to the allegations and provided a statement to 91mobiles, addressing the concerns regarding the functionality of the app and the security and privacy of Realme users.

The brand said that “realme attaches great importance to the privacy and security of our consumers and we are committed to maintaining the confidentiality of data security. Specific to the issue raised, we would like to clarify that the enhanced intelligent services feature is linked to optimising device usage to ensure that consumers get better battery life and temperature performance. However, contrary to the current description, we do not connect any data on SMS, phone calls, schedules, etc.

All data processed in this service is encrypted and stored in encrypted hardware within user’s device strictly in compliance with Android security mechanisms. This data is completely stored within the device and is not shared anywhere else or uploaded on the cloud. We place great emphasis on user privacy protection, the enhanced intelligent services feature can be manually turned on or off basis the needs of the consumers.”

Realme’s official statement emphasizes that the data collection process is intended solely to enhance the user experience, assuring that all collected data remains stored locally on the device. However, due to the recurring history of significant data allegations associated with Chinese companies, it is understandable that users have raised concerns about data privacy and security. Interestingly, Twitter users have also discovered a similar feature on OnePlus devices, suggesting that this issue might not be limited to Realme alone.

Realme launched a 4G smartphone in its latest number series called the Realme 10 4G. The device made its global debut in November and came to Indian markets in January. The specs and features made sense for the price range, however, the operating system out of the box is Android 12. The brand will soon be updating it to Android 13 as the Open Beta testing of Realme UI 4.0 for the device has commenced.

The update comes with many changes including the Aquamorphic UI design inspired by Oppo and other new features. Users of the Realme 10 4G interested in trying out the Android 13 build before its released to the public can apply by navigating to Settings → Software Update → Tap on the settings icon in the top right corner → Trial Version → Apply Now → Submit your details and finish the quiz.

You’ll need to make sure that your device is on the required UI version RMX3630_11.A.23 / RMX3630_11.A.27. If selected, you will get the new Realme UI update soon. Before installing the update, make sure that your device has at least 60% update. It’s crucial to acknowledge that the recently released beta update may contain bugs and underlying problems. Thus, it’s recommended to refrain from installing it on your primary mobile phone. However, if you still decide to proceed with the update, it’s highly advisable to back up your device’s data before initiating the installation of the new software.

The company has already started accepting applications in batches from February 21. The stable Realme UI 4.0 for Realme X7 Max 5G comes with firmware version RMX3031_11.F.04. Ever since the launch of Android 13, Realme has been actively rolling out the new software to its devices in all ranges. Back in September, Realme 9 5G got its official Realme UI 3.0 update based on Android 12. Now, a few months later, the device is getting its Android 13 x Realme UI 4.0 Early Access build, indicating that the stable update will arrive soon.

For Realme 9 5G users that are interested, Realme is currently providing the Android 13 upgrade based on Realme UI 4.0 Early Access build. This will serve as the newly developed software’s test run before the company releases the stable update in the future.

The official community post made by Realme mentions that as it is an early access program, only a limited number of seats are available. The application is now open, and applications will be accepted in batches. Additionally, it is important to note that since this is an early edition, there may be issues and some apps may not function properly. Installing the Early Access software on your primary phone might not be advised.

If you wish to apply for the Realme 9 5G’s Early Access program, you need to make sure that your device’s firmware is running on the RMX3388_11.C.06/ RMX3388_11.C.05 version. Also, make sure that your device has more than 60% battery.

To apply, you can navigate to Settings > Software Update > Tap on the three bars in the top right corner > Tap on Trial Version > Select Apply Now > Fill out the form and submit your details and finish the quiz.

You will receive a notification once the application has been submitted. However, not everyone who joins the program will receive the upgrade due to a lack of seats. It is advised to back up your personal data beforehand in order to prevent data loss during the update process.

Realme is set to unveil the Realme 10 Pro series in the global markets on December 8th. Now the company’s Vice President Madhav Sheth announced on Twitter that Realme will also release the Realme UI 4.0 for the global markets. To recall, the Realme 10 Pro series phones that debuted in China last month already shipped with Realme UI 4.0 out of the box. 

Realme says that the upcoming UI version will focus on four key areas including design, interaction, fluidity, and experience. Sheth has revealed more details about the key features. The Realme UI 4.0 will offer a card-based design that will help in separating essential information and less important info in different compartments. The quick settings and control panel also seem to be redesigned. The upcoming UI skin will offer smart interaction. The always-on display mode is revamped with a more personalised experience. Users can see the music player even without unlocking the phone. It will also offer interactive panels, customised recommendations and emoji animations. 

The Realme UI 4.0 will come with a dynamic computing engine that is said to boost overall performance by 10 percent. The battery life is claimed to be improved too by 4.7 percent. Lastly, Realme has also introduced a new privacy tool called Private Safe based on advanced encryption standards. There is an auto pixelate feature that will automatically detect sensitive information in images and pixelate it automatically.

Realme has been currently working on providing the Android 13-based Realme UI 3.0 update to its smartphone as early as possible. The Realme 9 Pro 5G, the brand’s budget-oriented smartphone, is now eligible for the open beta program of Android 13-based RealmeUI 3.0. The device was launched back in the month of February 2022 running Android 12 Realme UI 3.0 right out of the box. The brand has now officially started the open beta program for the device.

Interested users can apply for it, and after a quick verification, their device will get an OTA update of the Android 13-based Realme UI 3.0 update. Users of the Realme 9 Pro in India are eligible to apply for the Android 13 Open Beta program, which was announced earlier today by the firm. To be eligible for the program, users must have their Realme 9 Pro firmware updated to one of the following versions: RMX3471 11 A.42, RMX3471 11 A.43, RMX3471 11 A.44, or RMX3471 11 A.45.

To enrol yourself for the open beta program, head over to Settings >> Software Update >> Tap on the setting icon in the top right corner >> Trail version >> Fill up all the required details >> Tab on Submit. The company has advised users to keep at least 5GB of internal storage free, or else the upgrade will fail. Realme is all set to officially announce the latest version of its custom user interface for smartphones, dubbed Realme UI 4.0. While the exact launch date is not yet known, it is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Now, the company has officially revealed the roadmap for the first batch of smartphones from the brand that are set to get the latest Realme UI 4.0 update based on the latest Android 13 operating system.

The Realme UI 4 Early Access is already available for the Realme GT 2 Pro flagship smartphone, and several more smartphones from the brand are to receive the update starting this month. Here’s the roadmap shared by the company:

The update roadmap for the Realme UI 4.0 Early Access is for the first batch of smartphones, and the company said that it will soon release a new list of devices that will receive the update in the first quarter of 2023.

The timeline is currently for the smartphones in the Chinese market and after the Early Access version is available for some time, the company will roll out a more stable version of the new operating system, but there’s no exact timeframe revealed yet.

The Realme UI 4.0 is based on the Android 13 operating system and will come with more fingerprint styles, optimizations for the live wallpapers with new and richer animation effects, an updated notification bar control center, and much more.

With the launch of Android 13 by Google last month, it is no surprise that other competing Android smartphone manufacturers have to update their smartphones to Android 13 to obtain the latest customization and privacy feature updates from Google as well.

After Oppo launched its latest ColorOS 13 based on Android 13 in China, its sister brand Realme has also announced today that Realme will be launching its Realme UI 4.0 operating system based on the latest Android 13 update next week.

According to Realme China Chief Software Engineer, Rain Chen on Weibo, the company is planning to launch Realme UI 4.0 next week in mid-September. The launch will be revealing what Realme devices will be eligible for the Realme UI 4.0 major OS update, as well as the brand’s Realme UI 4.0 update roadmap for 2022 and 2023 for its current existing devices running on Realme UI 3.0 based on Android 12.

In the announcement post today, Chen also shared with Realme users that the Realme UI 4.0 Open Beta will be rolled out to Realme GT 2 Pro users this month by the end of September and that Realme UI 4.0 Early Access will be available to Realme GT 2 Master Explorer Edition and Realme GT Neo 3 smartphone users starting as soon as next month.

Currently, Realme’s most premium smartphone for 2022 is its H2 2022 flagship, the Realme GT 2 Master Explorer Edition. Soon to receive the Realme UI 4.0 based on the Android 13 update next month, the Realme GT 2 Master Explorer was launched with the fast and smooth Realme UI 3.0 based on Android 12 out of the box.

Besides sporting speedy software, the Realme GT 2 Master Explorer also features Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. The new SoC is built on TSMC’s industry-leading 4nm process that promises 30% better power efficiency and battery endurance over its previous generation whilst promising 30% better GPU performance as well.

The device is also equipped with an enormous 5,000 mAh battery equipped with 100W fast wired charging support that can fill the battery of the phone to 100 percent from scratch in just 25 minutes. And the best part is that Realme has managed to keep the smartphone in a slim and lightweight profile at only 8.2mm in thickness and 195 grams.

The Realme GT 2 Master Explorer Edition is available on Giztop for as low as $649 and is available in Gold, White, and Black.

Yesterday, Oppo started recruiting Open Beta testers for ColorOS 13 based on Android 13. Now, a day later, the company’s sister brand Realme has also opened registrations for a similar beta program for one of its devices.

In official announcement posts on Relame Community, Realme says that it has begun to recruit Android 13 Early Access testers for the Realme GT 2 Pro in China and India. 

For the unaware, Relame’s ‘Early Access’ program is merely a fancy name for the ‘Closed Beta’ initiative carried out by Oppo and OnePlus. Hence, software builds released for these testers are buggy in nature and may not be suitable to use on a daily driver smartphone.

Hence, enroll in the program only if you are used to unstable software. The brand has only allocated limited seats for both regions. Unfortunately, it does not mention the exact number.

Selected applicants will get the Android 13 beta update via OTA. Testers who are not satisfied with the experience of the beta software can roll back to the stable channel. However, this process will wipe the device’s internal storage and the unit cannot be enrolled again in the beta channel.

Realme is yet to officially announce its Android 13 software, which will be likely called Realme UI 4.0 and will be based on Oppo’s ColorOS 13. Whereas, another clone of Oppo’s software dubbed OxygenOS 13 was unveiled yesterday by OnePlus along with supported smartphones.
