Xiaomi has an EOS (End of Support) product list on its official website. Every once in a while, the company updates this list with older devices.

At the end of February, the firm made changes to the list. It added four more smartphones to this huge list. One of them was a quite popular phone of its time.

The handset we are talking about is Redmi Note 8. Apart from this device, Xiaomi has also suspended software support for Redmi Note 8T, Redmi 8A Dual, and Redmi K30 5G Speed Edition.

Redmi Note 8

Almost all of the aforementioned phones were released in early 2020. We expected Xiaomi to drop software support for them as some of the initial models in these lineups faced the same in late December.

Throughout their official software support period, Redmi K30 5G Speed Edition, Redmi Note 8, and Redmi Note 8T received two Android updates. But being an entry-level smartphone, the Redmi 8A Dual got only one Android update.

Out of these four handsets, the Redmi Note 8 was arguably the hottest product of its time worldwide. It was the first Redmi Note series device to offer a quad-camera setup.

Above all, it was priced very competitively. Unfortunately, it was the last Redmi Note lineup phone to offer great value for its asking price. That’s because the COVID-19 global pandemic soon followed and the entire smartphone market changed in the following years.

Design

If we talk about front designs, Honor 9A looks more elegant because it comes with a smaller waterdrop notch than the rest of the trio. But when it comes to the overall design, Redmi 8A Dual is slightly more interesting due to a more minimal look and a more compact body. The Redmi 8A Dual is also the only one with a water-repellent coating, and it is even protected by Gorilla Glass 5 (display). So if you need the best build quality, you know what to get.

Display

Honor 9A, Oppo A12, and Redmi 8A Dual are all equipped with an IPS panel coming with an HD+ resolution and more or less the same diagonal. With the Oppo A12, you should get a slightly better quality and a higher brightness. Given that these devices feature IPS panels, they do not have in-display fingerprint scanners. While Oppo A12 and Honor 9A have a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, Redmi 8A Dual does not have any biometric sensor, so users have to rely on a PIN to unlock their device.

Specs & Software

The Helio P35 processor found on the Oppo A12 and the Snapdragon 439 of the Redmi 8A Dual actually provide a very similar level of performance. But the Oppo A12 comes in a configuration with more RAM and more internal storage than Redmi 8A Dual. Oppo A12 has a 4/64 GB variant, while Redmi 8A Dual offers max 3 GB of RAM and max 32 GB of native storage. With its 64 GB, Honor 9A has more internal storage than Redmi 8A Dual, but it has an inferior processor, so it loses the hardware comparison. Note that Honor 9A is the only with Android 10 out of the box, but it lacks Google services in the global market due to the U.S. ban.

Camera

Honor 9A is the best camera phone of this comparison because it offers a 13 MP main sensor with a brighter focal aperture than its rivals (so better shots in low light conditions), as well as an ultrawide sensor. While Redmi 8A Dual and Oppo A12 only feature a depth sensor besides the main 13 MP lens, the Honor 9A also offers an 8 MP ultrawide lens. Redmi 8A Dual and Oppo A12 come with dual rear cameras sporting the same specifications, but the front camera is better on the Redmi 8A Dual.

Battery

Honor 9A and Redmi 8A Dual are able to provide a longer battery life than Oppo A12 because they feature a way bigger 5000 mAh battery. There should be only marginal differences between the battery life of the Honor 9A and the Redmi 8A Dual. But unlike the Honor 9A, Redmi 8A Dual supports 18W fast charging and reverse charging.

Price

Honor 9A is priced €150 globally and it is expected to hit the Indian market with an Rs.10,990/€130/$146 price tag. Redmi 8A Dual and Oppo A12 carry Rs.7,499/€88/$99 and Rs.9,990/€118/$132 prices, respectively. Overall, Redmi 8A Dual looks like a more complete device for average users. But if you need the best camera phone, Honor 9A is a way better choice. Oppo A12 is recommended for those who search for high performances.

This year the main smartphone manufacturers focused on upper-midrange phones and increased the prices of flagship phones, but they did not stop releasing entry-level devices. The latest is the Oppo A11k, just launched in the Indian market. But is it the best entry-level in terms of value for money or there are better handsets? Actually, it has several rivals in the Indian market: we believe that among the most interesting deals there are Realme C3 and Redmi 8A Dual, despite the price hikes caused by the pandemic. This comparison will help you to understand which entry-level should be the best for your needs.

Design

If you want the most futuristic and elegant design, just do not go for entry-level phones like these ones. But Oppo A11k, Realme C3, and Redmi 8A Dual remain devices with modern aesthetics, including a display with narrow bezels and a waterdrop notch. Unfortunately, they have a cheap polycarbonate body. But with the Realme C3 and Redmi 8A Dual, you get some kind of protection against water. They are not waterproof, but you will not have problems if you use them while it is raining. Redmi 8A Dual even comes with the Gorilla Glass 5 protection for the display, so it is very sturdy.

Display

Unfortunately, with each of these devices, you get a display below the average. But we are still talking about sufficient panels, with enough definition and decent overall quality. In each case, you get an IPS display with an HD+ resolution. The Realme C3 looks like the one with the highest peak brightness, and it also comes with a wider display diagonal (6.5 inches). On the other hand, with the Oppo A11k and the Redmi 8A Dual, you get a more compact body thanks to smaller displays.

Specs & Software

The highest performance level is provided by the Realme C3 not only because it has a great Helio G70 with high CPU and GPU performance (but it is still an entry-level chipset), but also because it is the only to come with up to 4 GB of RAM. The RAM is paired with up to 64 GB of internal storage (eMMC, unfortunately). Right after, we got the Redmi 8A Dual which offers the great stability of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 439 chipset and up to 3 GB of RAM. Oppo A11k has a lower-end Helio P22 chipset and just 2 GB of RAM. Note that Realme C3 is the only to run Android 10 out of the box. The Realme C3 is definitely the winner of the hardware and software comparison.

Camera

The brighter focal aperture of the main sensor found on the Realme C3 makes this device the most interesting camera phone of the trio. It should allow shooting better photos than Oppo A11k and Redmi 8A Dual in most of the conditions. But the Redmi 8A Dual actually comes with a better front camera which consists of a single 8 MP sensor. Again, the Oppo A11k is the most disappointing, but not by a high margin.

Battery

With its huge 5000 mAh battery and its smaller display (smaller than Realme C3), Redmi 8A Dual is able to provide an overall longer battery life. Realme C3 takes the silver medal, while Oppo A11k can not compete with its two rivals because it comes with a much smaller (but still very satisfying) battery. Redmi 8A Dual also wins the charger comparison since it provides faster charging speeds (18W fast charging) and it even supports reverse charging. Both Oppo A11k and Realme C3 charge at 10W.

Price

Oppo A11k is priced Rs.8,990/$118 in India, the Realme C3 price in India has been set at Rs. 8,999, and Redmi 8A Dual is priced Rs.6,499/$85. At the end of the day, I believe Realme C3 is a more valid device since it comes with better hardware, cameras, and Android 10 out of the box. But Redmi 8A Dual is more compact and more affordable while still providing similar specifications. In regards to Oppo A11k, you should wait for its price to drop before considering it.

Since its inception, Xiaomi’s Redmi series of smartphones have been popular because of their affordable pricing as well as better specifications compared to devices from other companies.

But that begun to change as competitors began to launch identical phones and sometimes even better models. On the other hand, the Redmi series of smartphones had become large enough that it was spun-off into an individual brand.

Despite the competition, Redmi managed to ship over 19 million units of Redmi 8 series phones globally, which is truly an achievement. But the same cannot be said for the Redmi 9 series which is launching during the pandemic.

Anyway, it is possible for the brand to sell more units as customers around the world are expected to prefer cheaper phones in the current situation.

Redmi 9, the successor to Redmi 8 was recently launched in South East Asia and Europe. Now, it is making its way to China and may also soon debut in India.

Now, Realme came up with another variant of the C3 boasting a triple camera. It seems there is a war between the two brands launched by Oppo and Xiaomi to conquer the entry-level segment. That is why we think it is worth comparing the Realme C3 and Redmi 8A Dual. We also brought Oppo A31 2020 in the comparison since it is another entry-level device launched recently which offers complementary features to the above-mentioned ones.

Design

In the segment of budget phones with a so affordable price, you can not expect premium materials. All of these devices are made of plastic, so you do not get the most premium design experience. But they are still pretty nice with their narrow bezels and waterdrop notches. Realme C3 and Redmi 8A Dual are both splash resistant, while Oppo A31 is not. Redmi 8A Dual is a way more compact device, so you may be interested to know that it is easier to use with one hand and to keep in a pocket. That is exactly why it would be my choice if we exclude the fact that it has a smaller display.

Display

All IPS displays, with HD+ resolutions: nothing special, but they all provide decent image quality and a high brightness. Oppo A31 and Realme C3 come with a wider 6.5-inch panel, but they have a lower pixel density due to this. Redmi 8A Dual has a smaller display and a higher pixel density, but the resolution is the same. These displays are more or less at the same level, we do not recommend to make your choice basing on them. Instead, you should take care of all the other specifications.

Specs & Software

Realme C3 is the most amazing phone when it comes to the hardware side. The MediaTek Helio G70 is stronger than both the Snapdragon 439 and the Helio P35 found on the Redmi 8A Dual and Oppo A31. The Snapdragon 439 is better than the Helio P35, but there is a huge gap between it and the Helio G70. The Helio G70 is currently the best chipset you can find on a device with a so affordable price. But consider that you get more internal storage with the Oppo A31: 128 GB. Realme C3 is the only one with Android 10 out of the box. The Realme C3 wins in this section of the comparison.

Camera

Realme C3 and Oppo A31 have a superior rear camera department if we compare them to the Redmi 8A Dual. They both come with a 12 MP triple camera including a 12 MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, a 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. Despite we are talking about the same camera departments, Oppo A31 wins the camera comparison because it boasts a better 8 MP selfie camera. Even Redmi 8A Dual has a better selfie camera than Realme C3, but its rear cameras are inferior on the paper.

Battery

Realme C3 and Redmi 8A Dual pack huge 5000 mAh batteries, while Oppo A31 has a smaller (but still great) 4230 mAh unit. We believe Redmi 8A Dual will last more on a single charge since it has a smaller display. Further, the Redmi 8A Dual has a faster charging technology.

Price

Redmi 8A Dual has an €80/$86 starting price, Realme C3 (in its triple camera variant) starts from €120/$130, and Oppo A31 costs €180/$195. Realme C3 looks like a better device thanks to its better chipset, but Redmi 8A Dual is more compact and it features faster charging speeds, so do not underestimate it. However, it lacks a fingerprint reader and it has inferior cameras, that is why I would choose the Realme C3. We did not award the Oppo A31 since its chipset is inferior to both and it has a smaller battery, but the presence of 128 GB of internal storage and great cameras may be very interesting for a good amount of potential buyers.

The release came a few days after the launch of the Realme C3, which is the last-generation entry-level handset from Realme. I personally believe that Redmi 8A Dual and Realme C3 are the best last-generation smartphones you can get for less than €100. That is why we decided to make a specs comparison between them. We usually choose three devices for comparisons, but in this case, we do not believe there is a better choice than these ones in that price range on the paper, at least from mainstream brands. Now, let’s find out which is the best among these kings of entry-level phones.

Design

The Aura XGrip Design of the Redmi 8A is simply amazing not only for the look but also for the grip. Thanks to a mesh texture, you can get a firm grip and keep fingerprint marks out of the picture. Further, it is a very original design scheme. Last but not least, Redmi 8A Dual is way more compact and easy to use with one hand than Realme C5. Unfortunately, both the devices do not feature a fingerprint reader, but they are both splash resistant. The Redmi 8A Dual even comes with a P2i coating. You can choose among three color variants for Redmi 8A Dual (Sky White, Sea Blue and Midnight Grey) and two color variants for Realme C3 (Frozen Blue and Blazing Red).

Display

The only big difference between the displays of Realme C3 and Redmi 8A Dual is the size. In each case, you get a modest IPS panel with an HD+ resolution. Not a big deal, but a sufficient display for every task. What really changes is the size: Redmi 8A Dual has a compact 6.22-inch display, while Realme C3 offers a wide 6.5-inch panel. If you want a device easier to use with one hand and easier to keep in a pocket, go for the Redmi 8A Dual. But if you often use your device for advanced tasks such as reading, watching movies, playing games or so, then Realme C3 might be a better option due to its wide panel.

Specs & Software

Redmi 8A Dual and Realme C3 are fueled by different chipsets: the former has a Snapdragon 439 under the hood, while Realme C3 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G70. The new Helio G70 is a lot more powerful than Snapdragon 439 and benchmarks proved it several times. Further, Realme C3 comes in a higher-end memory configuration boasting 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. Last but not least, Realme C3 has Android 10 out of the box (customized by Realme UI), while Redmi 8A Dual ships with Android 9 Pie.

Camera

As its name suggests, Redmi 8A Dual mainly differs from the vanilla Redmi 8A for its dual rear camera. But despite this big change, Realme C3 remains a better camera phone, at least on the paper. Its main 12 MP sensor boasts a brighter focal aperture and it should be able to shoot better photos. In both case, you get a secondary depth sensor and an 8 MP selfie camera, so the real big difference is the main sensor of the rear camera. Both are just sufficient camera phones, but it is impossible to find anything better at those prices.

Battery

Redmi 8A Dual and Realme C3 are champions of battery life. They feature a huge 5000 mAh battery that is awesome for an entry-level smartphone. Due to its smaller display, we believe Redmi 8A Dual will feature a longer battery life than Realme C3. Expect the same amazing battery life as the vanilla Redmi 8A. Further, 8A Dual charges faster than Realme C3 thanks to an 18W fast charging technology. However, Realme C3 still remains one of the best battery phones, so you should not worry so much about batteries here.

Price

Realme C3 is available in India with a starting price tag of just Rs. 6,999 / $97 / €90 in its 3/32 GB memory configuration, while for the Redmi 8A Dual you need Rs. 6,499 / €84 / $90 to purchase the version with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage; for the 3/32 GB you need Rs. 6,999 just like the Realme C3. Given its great camera, wider display and better chipset, I would personally go for the Realme C3. But Redmi 8A Dual is a more compact device and it has a longer-lasting battery, so do not underestimate it.

The handset had arrived in India with a starting price tag of Rs. 6,499 (~$91). Today, the company unveiled the Redmi 8A Dual phone in the country. It is an updated version of the Redmi 8A smartphone that features a new rear design along with an additional rear camera. It also comes in two color variants. Interestingly, the Redmi 8A Dual has arrived with a starting price same as the Redmi 8A.

Redmi 8A Dual specifications

The Redmi 8A Dual borrows many of its specs from the original Redmi 8A phone. Hence, it features a Gorilla Glass 5 protected 6.22-inch dot notch display that supports 19:9 aspect ratio and HD+ resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels. The 12nm Snapdragon 439 chipset fuels the smartphone with up to 3 GB of RAM.
The Redmi 8A Dual comes loaded with MIUI 11 based Android 10 OS. One of the major highlights of the Redmi 8A Dual is that it is backed by a 5,000mAh battery that supports fast charging through USB-C. The phone ships with a 10W charger. The inclusion of the massive battery allows it to charge other devices using the reverse charging feature. By purchasing an 18W rapid charger, the Redmi 8A Dual can be charged quickly.

Coming to the new features available on the Redmi 8A Dual, it sports an Aura X Grip design. The mesh texture on the phone’s back promotes better grip and keeps fingerprint marks away. There is P2i nano-coating which makes the Redmi 8A Dual splash-proof.

The Redmi 8A featured a single rear camera of 12-megapixel. As the name goes, the Redmi 8A Dual comes with a dual camera setup on its back that comprises of a 13-megapixel main lens and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. AI scene detection, AI portrait mode and Google Lens are some of the features that are available for the rear cameras of the Redmi 8A Dual. The 8-megapixel selfie camera on the Redmi 8A Dual also supports AI portrait mode.

The Redmi 8A Dual lacks a fingerprint sensor. The usual connectivity features like VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, USB-C and 3.5mm audio jack are available on the device. Also, the Redmi 8A Dual comes preloaded with VoWiFi functionality.

Redmi 8A Dual price in India and availability

Sea Blue, Sky White and Midnight Grey are the color editions of the Redmi 8A Dual. The 2 GB RAM + 32 GB storage and 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage. These models are respectively priced at Rs. 6,499 (~$91) and Rs. 6,999 (~$98).

The Redmi 8A was also made available in India in same variants and same pricing. Hence, it remains to be seen whether Xiaomi will be slashing the pricing of Redmi 8A or it will be replaced with the arrival of its updated version. The Redmi 8A Dual will be available for purchase through Mi.com, Amazon India and Mi Home stores starting from Feb. 18 at 12 PM (local time) in India.
