The Redmi Note 5 (Whyred) was one of the best smartphones of its time. This handset is also known as Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera. The global variant of the device received MIUI 12 update in early January 2021. However, the Chinese variant has started receiving the same update only now.

For some unknown reasons, Xiaomi has just begun to roll out MIUI 12 update for the Redmi Note 5 in China. The update arrives with build number V12.0.3.0.PEICNXM.

Despite being released in June 2021, the latest system update for the Redmi Note 5 comes with September 2020 security patches. Above all, the build is in the ‘Stabe Beta’ phase.

In other words, the MIUI 12 update for the Redmi Note 5 Chinese variant is being seeded out in batches. It is only available for a select few users. However, it should reach all the units in the coming days.

Usually, MIUI updates are first rolled out to the models sold in China. Hence, it is weird to learn that the Chinese variant of the Redmi Note 5/5 Pro is the last to get the MIUI 12 update. What’s more interesting is that the update arrives five months after it was made available for the global variant.

That said, we hope Xiaomi to start delivering updates on time without any bugs with the help of its newly established ‘MIUI Pioneer Group’.

Yesterday, ahead of the Mi 11 global launch event, Xiaomi India announced a brag-worthy achievement on its various social media handles.

The Chinese smartphone maker revealed that it has shipped over 200 million units of Redmi Note series phones globally to date. This data is sourced from the firm’s own ‘Xiaomi Data Center’.

It is not surprising to learn that the global shipments of the Redmi Note series have exceeded 200 million units since its inception. This series has been the heart of Xiaomi’s product lineup ever since it was introduced.

Redmi Notes have been unbeatable in their price segment for a very long time. However, that began to change when realme entered the scene. But being an established product lineup, they are still as popular as they were before.

That said, Xiaomi is known for announcing its milestones ahead of releasing new devices. Hence, we think the Redmi Note 10 series is just around the corner. The upcoming series is reported to include two models, namely Redmi Note 10 and Redmi Note 10 Pro. As of now, we are only aware of the storage configurations and color variants of these handsets.

Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 Pro in early 2018 in India with MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1 (Nougat). This very phone later debuted as Redmi Note 5 in China and other markets. The handset was updated to Android 8.1 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie) along with MIUI 10 and MIUI 11. Now, it has started receiving MIUI 12 update.

The Redmi Note 5/5 Pro aka ‘Whyred’ (codename) is one of the popular Redmi Note series smartphones among consumers as well as the custom ROM community. 

The device has three different MIUI builds – Global, China, and Russia. Usually, the Chinese variant gets the first dibs on a new update but MIUI 12 has been initially made available for the variant running Global build. Hence, the update with build number V12.0.2.0.PEIMIXM is live in all the regions worldwide except China and Russia.

Currently, the update is in the ‘Stable Beta’ phase, and therefore, it is only available for select users. But it should be soon available for all the users if there aren’t any major issues with the build. We also expect Xiaomi to release the update for the variant sold in both China and Russia in the coming days.

Having said that, MIUI 12 is the last major update for the Redmi Note 5/5 Pro. The smartphone is not eligible for the Android 10 update but it may receive the minor MIUI 12.5 update later this year.

MIUI 12 was officially unveiled earlier today along with Mi 10 Youth Editon mid-range 5G smartphone sporting a periscope camera. After the event, the company also announced the update schedule in a post on Mi Community China. Unfortunately, the post also mentions some bad news suggesting MIUI 12 could be the last update for five popular devices from the company.

Xiaomi stopped releasing MIUI Global Beta builds from last year, however, it continued to provide beta builds for MIUI China ROM. Whenever the company drops support for beta builds for a device, it is likely to not receive the next iteration of MIUI thereafter.

In the post where the company listed the eligible devices for MIUI 12, it also noted the end of beta builds for five devices listed below from June 20, 2020. 

• Xiaomi Mi 6
• Xiaomi Mi 6X
• Xiaomi Mi Note 3
• Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
• Redmi Note 5

MIUI 12 could be the last update for the above-listed devices. They may not receive MIUI 13 update whose ‘Feature Design Survey’ is already live on Mi Community China.

Once the development of MIUI China Beta ROMs for these devices will be ended, they will be receiving MIUI 12 Stable build as per the update schedule/timeline provided by the company. Additionally, they might receive one or two maintenance updates after that to fix bugs. And that could be the end of official software support for these handsets unless Xiaomi changes its mind.

It is worth noting that Mi 6 is yet to be decided by the company to get a stable update. Also, the Redmi Note 5 mentioned here is the Chinese variant, which is popular as Redmi Note 5 Pro in India.

Although these smartphones may not receive update from the company in the near future, they are expected to remain up to date for a few more years as almost all of them are still popular in the Android modding community.

Xiaomi has been aggressive with the push of updated of its latest MIUI 11 to its models. The Redmi Note 5 and Redmi 5 are among the latest models to have gotten the update. IThomes reports that it’s readers who use the Redmi Note 5 and it’s smaller sibling to have disclosed the push of the update to their models.

Both models got the MIUI V11.0.1 stable ROM but sorry to disappoint, the two models will  still continue to rock Android 9. The package size of the Redmi Note 5 update is 677M while that of the Redmi 5 is 591M.

Even though the update didn’t usher both models to the Android 10 party, MIUI 11 brings several amazing features to the table including Dark Mode. The new features include new icons for the UI which is a traditional feature of successive MIUI versions. The update also brings smoother animations, Ultra Power Saving Mode as well as Kids Mode which provides a safe digital environment for kids by running only apps whitelisted by their parent or guardian. MIUI 11 equally tracks the owner’s smartphone usage time in order to help avoid spending too much time. Other features include earthquake alerts, the ability to cast to an external display with the added feature of continuous casting even when the display is turned off to save battery.

Google has officially released the latest Android 10 and some of the smartphones have already started receiving this new update. While the Google Pixel series, Essential Phone and Xiaomi’s K20 and K20 Pro have got the stable build, phones like OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro are on the beta build.

The source code of the new Android 10 is already up at AOSP and thanks to it, custom ROMs based on Android 10 have started surfacing online. In the latest development, Android 10-based custom ROMs for a few Xiaomi smartphones, including Poco F1, Mi 6, Mi 8, and the Redmi Note 5 have been released.

The popular Poco F1 has now received unofficial Android 10, thanks to the Potato Open Sauce Project (POSP) custom ROM. The ROM is not yet stable and there are some issues such as the fingerprint scanner is not working for some users. It also lacks some features but it’s alright given the early days of development.

The same ROM is also available for the Redmi Note 5 (India) and the Redmi Note 5 Plus (Global). However, the ROM is marked as alpha and it’s advisable to use this only if you are experience in this. It too has issues with the fingerprint scanner and the thermal engine, among others.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 is also receiving Android 10 through unofficial LineageOS 17 build (link) and has only one bug listed which is related to Bluetooth playback. This is quite impressive that an almost stable build is available for the smartphone just days after the rollout of this new version of the operating system. Also, the Mi 8 has got Android 10 through Pixel3 ROM (link), which has some issues with FPC scanners and Google Camera.

There is no confirmation on the authenticity of the price leak. Hence, it is advisable for readers to digest with a grain of salt.

Xiaomi has confirmed the list of smartphones that will be treated with Android 9 Pie OS update. Before rolling out the stable update to as many as 10 smartphones, the Chinese manufacturer will be releasing the global beta edition of the update. Among them two are scheduled to receive the beta version by the end of this month. Five more will be getting it in the next quarter and there is no timeline decided for the remaining three phones.

The Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Y2 (known as Redmi S2 in China) are scheduled to be treated with Android 9 Pie beta edition within this quarter. In the second quarter, it will be coming to handsets like Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, Mi 6, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Mi Note 3.

The Android 9 Pie global beta update status for Redmi Note 6 Pro, Mi 6X and Mi 9 Explorer Edition is still in development stage. For Chinese audience, the update will include MIUI China ROM whereas the global users will be provided with MIUI Global ROM. Once the beta edition is available, the company will announce its arrival through its forums and app.

The aforementioned list had surfaced on the official MIUI forums site. An administrator on the discussion board claimed the that the list is incomplete. He stated that once existing devices are provided with Oreo update, the list will be updated with newer phones that can be upgraded to Android 9 Pie OS.

Last month, we saw variants of the Redmi Note 5/Redmi Note 5 Pro running Android Pie on Geekbench. Xiaomi has now confirmed that it is indeed bringing Android Pie to the phone and some other models too.

According to a post on the official MIUI forum, Xiaomi is recruiting beta testers for Android Pie for the Redmi Note 5, Mi 6X,  Redmi S2, and Redmi 6 Pro. Apart from the Redmi Note 5, the other three phones launched with Android Oreo out of the box, so they should at least get one major OS upgrade. The Redmi Note 5 launched with Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box and already got an update to Android Oreo, so the fact that it is getting Android Pie is a big deal.

The above models are the Chinese models but the Android Pie update should eventually roll out to the Redmi S2 which is known as the Redmi Y2 in India and the Redmi Note 5 which is sold as the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Mi 6X and the Redmi 6 Pro already run Android Pie outside China since they are the Android One phones the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite respectively.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro launched with Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box and later got an upgrade to Android 8.1 Oreo about six months ago. Its latest major update brought MIUI 10 but still based on Android Oreo to it. It appears its next major update will be to Android 9 Pie.

We found a couple of Redmi Note 5/Redmi Note 5 Pro phones running Android 9 on Geekbench today. This can only mean Xiaomi is working on an update that brings Android Pie to the phone. When it eventually arrives, it will be the second major Android OS update for the phone which isn’t a common occurrence for Xiaomi phones.

The Redmi Note 5/Redmi Note 5 Pro running Android Pie wasn’t the only thing we found on Geekbench today. We also saw a version of the Redmi Note 5 Pro with a Snapdragon 660 processor. The Redmi Note 5 comes with a Snapdragon 636 processor and even its successor, the Redmi Note 6 Pro is powered by the same processor, so this version with an SDM660 chipset is a first of its kind.

This doesn’t seem to be an error on Geekbench’s part as the base frequency matches those of other Snapdragon 660-powered phones like the Mi 8 Lite and the Mi A2. However, its scores are lower. This version of the Redmi Note 5 Pro also has 3GB of RAM and runs Android 8.1 Oreo.

Xiaomi has confirmed through the Weibo account of Xiaomi Mall that it will be live broadcasting the launch of a new product on Nov. 6. The Chinese manufacturer has not disclosed the name of the product that will be debuting in the coming week. Rumors have it that the company may launch the Redmi Note 6 smartphone.

The poster that has been released by Xiaomi Mall states that the new product will be unveiled at 2 PM (local time) in China on Nov. 6. The poster also carries “wonderful upgrade” tagline for the mysterious device. The Chinese manufacturer had announced the Redmi Note 6 Pro smartphone in Thailand at the end of September. It is speculated that the same phone could be heading to China with the name of Redmi Note 6.

One of the leaked promotional images of the Redmi Note 6 that has been spotted on Weibo states that it is equipped with four cameras and AI portrait blur feature. It also reveals the phone features 20-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual selfie camera module. The handset may arrive with 999 Yuan pricing and it could be aimed towards the upcoming Nov. 11 Singles Day sales in China.

The entire specifications of the Redmi Note 6 have been revealed through its Thailand launch. The Note 6 is equipped with a 6.26-inch IPS LCD notched screen that offers 19:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution. The Snapdragon 636 mobile platform and 4,000mAh battery that powers the Redmi Note 5 are also present inside the successor phone.

The Redmi Note 6 has 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup on its rear. It comes with MIUI flavored Android 8.1 Oreo OS. The smartphone may arrive in variants such as 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage and 4 GB / 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage in the home market. The color options of the smartphone include Black, Blue, Rose Gold and Red.

Xiaomi recently launched its latest midrange model, the Redmi Note 6 Pro in Thailand after a long romance with the media via several leaks. As an aftermath of the launch, Xiaomi has slashed the price of the Redmi Note 5. The 3GB+32GB version is announced to be on sale for just 869 yuan ($126) on Mi Mall for a limited time. The offer is 230 yuan lower than the initial 1099 yuan price tag of the 3GB model. This price reduction doesn’t in anyway suggest the Redmi Note 6 Pro is the successor of the Redmi Note 5. But since both models are part of the Redmi Note series, it is just apt that the price of the Redmi Note 5 is adjusted to maintain its competitiveness.

The Redmi Note 5 was announced in February this year packing a 5.99-inch FHD+ Fullview display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and a 2.5D Curved glass on top. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 636 chipset paired with 3GB/4GB RAM. The main highlight of the Redmi Note 5 is perhaps the AI capable cameras it packs. The front panel of the Redmi Note 5 includes a soft LED flash-enabled 13MP selfie camera that carries support for AI portrait mode. The selfie camera also features pre-HDR which allows it to intelligently detect the background light to capture amazing selfie shots in dim-light conditions by accordingly configuring the front LED flash. After such a long wait, the Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi is rolling out the stable MIUI 10 update to Redmi 6, 6A, Redmi 5 Plus global version and the Redmi Note 5 in India. The update is currently not available via the OTA (Over-the-Air), although, users can download OTA update.zip file from the official Xiaomi website to manually upgrade the device.

Xiaomi posted the official confirmation about the update via its official @miuirom Twitter handle. It also mentioned about the Redmi 5 Plus and Redmi Note 5 devices which have already received the MIUI 10 Stable ROM update a few days ago. Today, the owners of the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6 Pro received the latest MIUI 10 Global Stable ROM.

Many changes are present in the latest MIUI 10 along with the new User Interface. It brings AI portrait mode to the single front camera with the Hindi language support in Mi Apps. After rolling out the new MIUI 10 update for the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the China-based Xiaomi has now started rolling out the same update for the Redmi Note 5 as well.

The new update is MIUI 10.0.1.0.OEIMIFH and is around 455MB in size. It brings the latest September security patch for Android as well as several major features such as full-screen gestures, redesigned notification panel, improved multitasking management, among others.

The change-log related to the update reveals that the company has simplified system sounds and has also applied smart filters. It also brings AI-based Portrait mode to single camera devices which can blur the background.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 was launched earlier this year running MIUI 9.2, based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system out-of-the-box. A few months ago, the phone received an update of MIUI 9.5, which was also based on Android Nougat. Last month, the company released another update, which brought Android Oreo to the smartphone.

Redmi Note 5 comes with a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display having a screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and 2.5D curved glass. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 625 14nm processor.

It comes with AI Dual Camera that features a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a secondary sensor of 5-megapixel that captures depth. It comes equipped with features like dual autofocus, EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization), HDR, Burst Mode and Panorama. It can capture amazing AI driven portrait shots by naturally blurring the background.

On the front side, there’s a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture along with a selfie flash to enhance low light snaps. It also features Beautify 3.0, selfie timer, and face recognition.

Earlier this year, Xiaomi launched Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphone in India with up to 6GB RAM and up to 64GB internal storage. The company launched the same smartphone in China as the Redmi Note 5, with better specifications.

After launching the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage model of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 in China, the company has now introduced a new variant that comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, adding to the already available models — 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM, 6GB RAM + 64GB storage.

Even though the new variant comes with increased storage capacity, the pricing remains the same as 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model — 1,699 Yuan, which roughly converts to $250. It will be available for purchase in China from 27th July.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 comes with a Full HD+ display with screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and 2.5D curved glass. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 636 processor. It comes with AI Dual Camera that features a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a secondary sensor of 5-megapixel that captures depth.

The camera comes equipped with features like dual autofocus, EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization), HDR, Burst Mode and Panorama. It can capture amazing AI driven portrait shots by naturally blurring the background. Apart from shooting full HD videos, it can also record 720p slow-motion videos.

Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 5 smartphone in South Korea. The handset is now available for buying through leading local carriers in the country.

Xiaomi devices have been available in South Korea through online shopping sites or through third-party retailers. However, for the first time Xiaomi has partnered with local telecom service providers in South Korea to introduce the Redmi Note 5 in the country. Xiaomi had held a launch event in partnership with G-mobi, a local distributor in Seoul, South Korea on Monday to announce the arrival of Redmi Note 5.

The Redmi Note 5 carries a price tag of 299,200 won (~$265). However, the offers provided by SK Telecom and KT could allow consumers to avail it under 100,000 won (~$88). LG Uplus, the third largest mobile operator of South Korea is not selling the Redmi Note 5.

The Redmi Note 5 that has arrived in South Korea is actually the Note 5 Pro smartphone that was unveiled in India in February. It is equipped with a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display that produces Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The Snapdragon 636 SoC and 4 GB are present under the hood of the phone. It has a native storage of 64 GB.

Samsung has been dominating the South Korean market since several years. Xiaomi has just entered the country with Redmi Note 5. Probably, it could be prepping up to become a threat for Samsung in its home country.

On May 31, Xiaomi had announced the all new MIUI 10 ROM. At the beginning of June, it had rolled out the Developer ROM closed beta in China for first batch of devices and the same devices had received public beta by the end of the month. Today, the Chinese manufacturer has released the developer ROM closed beta to the second batch of devices.

The first batch of devices that were treated with MIUI 10 Developer ROM included Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, Mi 6, Mi MIX 2S, Mi MIX 2, Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Redmi S2 and Redmi Note 5. Since the registrations for the Developer ROM closed beta ended yesterday in China, the company has made it available to the second batch of Xiaomi phones starting from today. After the closed beta testing comes to an end, the public beta is likely to arrive for the same second batch of devices by the end of this month.

The second batch of 17 Xiaomi phones that are now receiving the MIUI 10 Developer ROM closed beta are Xiaomi Mi Note 3, Mi 5S Plus, Mi 5S, Mi 5X, Mi 5C, Mi 4C, Mi 4S, Mi Max, Mi Max Prime, Mi Max 2, Redmi Note 5A, Note 5A Prime, Redmi Note 4X (Snapdragon variant), Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi 5, Redmi 5A and Redmi 4X.

The company has stated that the arrival of the public beta of Mi 5X will be delayed. The specific release time for the smartphone will be announced through its social media channels. By this, Xiaomi is bringing the latest MIUI 10 to a total of 27 smartphones.

The MIUI 10 Developer ROM closed beta can be installed in two ways. Xiaomi, which is currently dominating the Indian smartphone market with about 30 percent market share, has revealed that it has sold more than 5 million units of Redmi Note 5 series smartphones in India so far. The first smartphone in Redmi Note 5 series was launched about four months ago.

It accounts for sales from all the platforms on which the Redmi Note 5 series smartphones, including the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro, are available for purchase. It also includes all the different variant of both the smartphones available in India.

Announcing about this, the company said in a tweet, “We’re proud to announce that we’ve sold 5 MILLION UNITS of Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in just 4 months. Thank you for such an amazing response!” To celebrate this success, the company announced that it is giving out F-Codes for the smartphone.

Last year, Redmi Note 4 was the bestselling phone in India having sold 10 million units within one year of launch and 5 million units in its first 6 months. In comparison, the Redmi Note 5 series has performed better than its predecessor as it managed to sell 5 million units within 4 months.

Several reports have indicated that apart from the online sales, Xiaomi’s continued focus on offline expansion has improved the brand’s visibility in India, helping the company in boosting sales of its budget smartphones across the nation.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has a starting price of Rs. 9,999 (approximately $145) for the 3GB RAM model while the 4GB RAM model costs Rs. 11,999 (approx. $174). The smartphone, which comes with 5.99-inch FHD+ display, is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.

It comes with a 12MP camera sensor on the back with f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP front-facing shooter with LED Selfie flash and support for Beautify 3.0 feature. The device runs on the latest MIUI 9 which is based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system and is powered by a 4000 mAh battery.

The TENAA listing has revealed that Redmi 6 Pro may come in storage models such as 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB that will respectively feature 2 GB, 3 GB and 4 GB of RAM. However, fresh information reveals that the smartphone will be arriving in the market in three models such as 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage + 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM.

He has also claimed that the Redmi 6 Pro will be arriving in five colors such as Gold, Black, Pink, Blue and Red which has been already confirmed by Xiaomi.

Mi Pad 4

A recent leak has revealed that the Mi Pad 4 will be arriving in two variants. The base model with 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM will be a Wi-Fi only device with a price tag of 1,499 Yuan (~$230). There will be an LTE model with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB of storage that will have a pricing of 1,999 Yuan (~$308).

The Indian tipster has shared some contradicting information about the Mi Pad 4. He claims that there be two Wi-Fi only models such as 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM. He also claims that there will be an LTE model with 64 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM. However, he hasn’t shared any information on the pricing of the Mi Pad 4 variants. The 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM edition of the Note 5 has a bigger price cut of 200 Yuan (~$30). It is now available for 1,199 Yuan (~$187).

The Redmi Note 5 (China) was launched in three memory versions;  a 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM, 4GB + 64GB version and the 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM version.  The 6GB RAM version was priced at 1,699 yuan (~$268) when it was launched but that is what has taken a price cut right now. The price reduction seems to be a limited offer and so it is likely not going to be permanent. In another light, this price cut may be due to the Mi 6X which is also on sale.

However, this is some interesting news as it indicates that we may soon see the Redmi Note 5 being offered for way less. Even the 4GB RAM version had its price slashed slightly and is now up for 1,259 yuan instead of 1,399 yuan. (~221). Already, the price tag for the 4GB RAM version on GearBest is pretty affordable at  $229 while the 3GB RAM version is offered for $199. Because of the newly introduced changes in the import taxes for PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) as well as the depreciation of the Indian rupee from the start of 2018, Xiaomi has increased the prices of Redmi Note 5 Pro and 55-inch Mi TV 4. The new prices will come into effect starting from May 1 across Mi.com, Mi Store app, Mi Home outlets, Flipkart and offline retailers.

Xiaomi has only spiked the price of 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM edition of the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It has been selling with a price tag of Rs. 13,999 (~$210). However, beginning from tomorrow, it will be available for buying for Rs. 14,999 (~$225). The 64 GB storage + 6 GB RAM variant of the Redmi Note 5 Pro will continue to sell for Rs. 16,999 (~$255).

The Mi TV 4 (55-inch) was introduced in February with a pricing of Rs. 39,999 (~$601). Starting from tomorrow, it will be selling for Rs. 44,999 (~$676) after a price spike of Rs. 5,000 (~$75). There is no change in the pricing of the other smart TVs from the company. The Mi TV 4A 43-inch and 32-inch are respectively available for Rs. 22,999 (~$346) and Rs. 13,999 (~$210).

The Redmi Note 5, Note 5 Pro and 55-inch Mi TV 4 that were launched in India in February this year have met with overwhelming sales. According Xiaomi’s Global VP and Managing Director for India, the company has been importing a significant amount of PCBAs for Note 5 Pro and Mi TV4 in to order to ramp up their supply. By increasing the manufacturing capacity, the company aims to stock up monthly volume of one million units of Redmi Note 5 Pro. He added that the company has increased the pricing of these two devices as the Indian government has increased the import tax on PCBAs by 10 percent and at the same time Indian rupee has depreciated by around 5 percent.

Xiaomi has already starting manufacturing various components including PCBAs in India. It is manufacturing PCBAs in collaboration with Taiwan-based Foxconn at the units in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Xiaomi released the brand new Mi 6X model a few hours ago and it’s everything that we hoped for. The phone, likely to be rebranded as the Xiaomi Mi A2 with stock Android on board for the international markets, could be one of the fastest mid-rangers in the market right now, powered by the mighty Snapdragon 660. We often believed that the SD660 wasn’t used to its full potential, but inside the Mi 6X, the phone could be an instant hit. That doesn’t mean the new model isn’t without flaws, and your purchase decision will eventually depend upon what you are willing to sacrifice for the added CPU and camera performance.

Having said that, we realized that the Xiaomi Mi 6X is priced very close to the Redmi Note 5 Pro in China. Last year, this wasn’t an issue with the Mi 5X, since the Redmi Note 4 didn’t have a separate Pro model. The Mi 5X was an independent offering from Xiaomi in its segment and that definitely helped in its sales. But this year, things are different with the Xiaomi Mi 6X and the Redmi Note 5 Pro (known simply as the Redmi Note 5 in China) priced very close to each other.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Design

On first glance, you might say both the phones look alike as their basic dimensions and design are quite similar. But they have quite a lot of differences too. For example, the Mi 6X looks a lot more premium and polished than the RN5Pro. This is because of its curved back and the U shaped antenna lines. On the other hand, the Redmi model features a traditional design, similar to other Note series phones. The Mi 6X is also significantly thinner and lighter. Also, it comes in a fresh Red color option which isn’t found on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. However, unlike the RN5Pro the Mi 6X doesn’t have a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack.

But these things aren’t necessarily big features to choose it over the Mi 6X model. The 3010mAh battery, despite being average, should deliver a day’s life. With the increase in smartphone storage, less customers use MicroSD card slots these days. Also, there’s a decent Type-C adapter as an alternative to the headphone jack. In short, these shortcomings of the Xiaomi Mi 6X can be forgiven for the increased CPU and camera performance that it brings to the table.

Xiaomi Mi 6X vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Prices

This is where things get interesting. The Xiaomi has priced the new Mi 6X quite near the Redmi Note 5 Pro models. To recap, the RN5Pro (RN5 in China) was launched at 1399 Yuan (~$221) for the 4+64GB model and 1699 Yuan ($268) for the 6+64GB model. The same storage 4+64GB and 6+64GB configurations can be availed on the Xiaomi Mi 6X for a price of 1599 yuan (~$253) and 1799 Yuan (~$284) respectively.

As you can see, there’s just a 100-200 yuan difference between these two devices. Even with a price cut for the Redmi Note 5 Pro model, it would still be a hard decision to choose it over the Mi 6X.

Xiaomi is working on a successor to last year’s Mi 5X, which is unsurprisingly called the Mi 6X. It was seen on TENAA last month baring all its specs except for the cameras and processor which are still a bit vague.

The Mi 6X has a design very similar to that of the Redmi Note 5/Note 5Pro. The dual cameras have the same iPhone X-style arrangement and it has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It also has the same display size.

However, a key difference between the Mi 6X and Redmi Note 5 Pro is that the latter keeps the U-antenna design from its predecessor.

We’ve been able to get our hands on a live photo said to be that of the Mi 6X. When you first look at it, it does seem to be the Mi 6X since it has the U-antenna design mentioned above. Don’t be easily fooled as that is actually a case slapped on the back of the phone.

Since the antenna line is the only way to differentiate between the Redmi Note 5 and Mi 6X and this phone has a case slapped on its back, we’ll say it is a fifty-fifty chance that the phone underneath is indeed the Mi 6X.

The Mi 6X is also expected to launch as the Mi A2 in countries outside China. It will run pure Android and be released as an Android One phone just like its predecessor, the Mi A1. It should also launch first in India.

Xiaomi‘s Redmi series has been one of its most successful product range. The Redmi 4A is perhaps the cheapest and most successful smartphone under the series but the Note models have carved a niche for themselves globally. Recently, Xiaomi added the Redmi Note 5 to the lineup and it really wasn’t a disappointment in any aspect. The smartphone is already on sale in China and now, it is about to land other markets overseas.

Xiaomi’s international Product and Marketing director, Donovan Sung has revealed that the Redmi Note5 would be launched in Indonesia on April 18. The Xiaomi exec made this disclosure o his official Weibo page. This announcement thus effectively confirms that China’s Redmi Note 5 is the global version. Recall that the Redmi Note 5 was first launched as Redmi Note 5 Pro in India with a slightly different specs line up.

China’s Redmi Note 5 features a 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The major marketing feature of the Redmi Note 5 is the AI dual cameras which it packs at the rear. The Redmi Note 5’s AI Dual Camera comprises of a 12MP primary sensor that has a pixel size of 1.4micron and f/1.9 aperture along with a 5MP secondary depth of field sensor. It is equipped with features like dual autofocus, EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization), HDR, Burst Mode and Panorama. The dual rear cameras can also capture amazing AI driven portrait shots by naturally blurring the background. Apart from shooting full HD videos, it can also record 720p slow-motion videos.

After announcing Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro models in India a month ago, Xiaomi released the Pro (that was initially launched in India) variant in China under the Redmi Note 5 branding. It’s a bit confusing and that’s not only because the company is using the same name for different models in different regions, but also because their specs vary, but only slightly. To keep things short, the Note 5 in China is more powerful in the rear camera department, and today, we check out a few of the Redmi Note 5 samples to see if it does well in the photography department.

Before we move on to the rear camera, let’s check out some front camera samples.

Up front, the Chinese Redmi Note 5 comes with a 13MP setup instead of a 20MP setup as found on the Pro variant in India. Lower resolution doesn’t necessary mean lower performance, and the front camera on the Redmi Note 5 does pretty well, especially if are fond of background blur. Note that there is just a single camera up front with LED flash and Xiaomi uses software to get the depth information for bokeh photos. To be honest, the software does pretty well to detect your face and blur out the background effectively. So, if you are into this kind of selfies, you won’t be disappointed. Overall, the quality of the front camera is pretty good in the budget segment.

Coming to the rear camera setup, there’s a dual 12 MP (f/1.9, 1.4 μm) + 5 MP (f/2.0, 1.12 μm) setup with dual-pixel phase detection autofocus. It’s better than the f/2.2, 1.25 μm setup found on the Indian model, and should ideally capture better photos too. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the Indian Redmi Note 5 Pro model with us to compare, but overall, the Chinese model does pretty well, especially in day light photography.

Saturation levels are good in the samples. The phone is quick to focus and you’d be happy with the amount of details captured in each image. In some pictures, you can clearly see that the colors pop out really well. For example, in the image of the salad, the veggies look fresh and colourful. Maybe a tad bit more colourful than in reality, but I’m sure users who are into food photography would love the result.

This was about daytime photography, but when the lights go down, so does the image quality. Noise kicks in and images are dull, and to be honest, there’s nothing spectacular about the Redmi Note 5’s night time photography. You’d manage to take a few decent shots by adjusting your angle and light, but still it won’t be extraordinary. In its defence, the phone isn’t meant to click photos like a $500 flagship, but we could use a slightly better result in low light conditions.

As for the background blur from the rear camera, it works pretty well. AI has helped Xiaomi improve its edge detection algorithms and on most occasions, you’ll get a good bokeh shot from its rear dual camera setup.

There have been sightings of cases and renders said to be of the Xiaomi Mi 6X but there has been no official confirmation of the device’s existence until today. The Xiaomi Mi 6X has been seen on TENAA and true to previous leaks, it does look familiar.

The Mi 6X which has model number M1804D2SE sports a 5.99” display powered by a 2910mAh battery. Its dimensions are given as 158.88 × 75.54 × 7.3 mm.

With respect to design, the Mi 6X shares a striking resemblance to the Redmi Note 5 Pro (Redmi Note 5 in China). It has the same vertically arranged dual rear cameras and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The only difference is the U-antennas reminiscent of the Mi 5X/Mi A1.

The Xiaomi Mi 6X Xiaomi is shown in the popular red color of the Mi 5X but there should be other color variants at launch. The front of the phone is black and a camera and earpiece is visible at the top of the device.

The rest of the specs are unknown. We also do not know when Xiaomi will officially announce it. However, the big question is if it will have an Android One version.

However, the upcoming phones such as Lenovo S5, Meizu E3 and Smartisan Nut 2 are also expected to feature the same Snapdragon 636 chipset to rival with the Redmi Note 5. As far as the performance of the Note 5 is concerned, it has scored an impressive benchmarking score of 115,247 on AnTuTu.

The Note 5 has couple of AI features such as AI face recognition and AI Smart Beauty. It includes 5.99-inch FHD+ resolution supporting IPS LCD display that offers an aspect ratio of 18:9. It includes a big battery of 4,000mAh capacity. It is loaded with the latest MIUI 9 version that brings along the new feature of full screen gestures.

Xiaomi officially launched the Redmi Note 5 in China on March 16. The Redmi Note 5 was Xiaomi’s first full-screen smartphone that featured a dual camera setup. Apart from that, the Redmi Note 5 is the first smartphone in China to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor. Apart from the Redmi Note 5, the only model using a Snapdragon 636 chip is the Redmi Note 5 Pro which was launched in India last month.

It is expected that both the Redmi Note 5 and 5 Pro would score the same on benchmark since both pack same processor. Interestingly, that isn’t the case as the AnTuTu benchmark score of China’s Redmi Note 5 has been revealed. Xiaomi shared the AnTuTu score of the SD636-powered device and it surpassed that of India’s Redmi Note 5 Pro. To compare, the Redmi Note 5 Pro scored 112,649 points while the newly launched Redmi Note 5 scored 115,247 points. The gap isn’t too wide to elicit much consideration. But the score edges closer to the 139,140 score of the Snapdragon 660 on AnTuTu. There is still enough gap, though, an indication the SD 660 is more powerful.

The Snapdragon 636 chipset onboard both models pack the same configuration. It is designed using the Octa-core Kyro 260 CPU architecture and is built on a 14nm silicon wafer. The mobile processor is clocked at 1.8GHz and is paired with an Adreno 509 GPU. The new processor also comes with support for Bluetooth 5.0. The CPU is composed of four large Cortex A73 cores and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz.

Xiaomi is set to officially unveil the Redmi Note 5 China version which has been the subject of several teasers. Ahead of the launch, the tech giant has again shared some details of the device as it pertains to the camera setup. The details are backed by some camera samples shot by the Redmi Note 5’s front and rear cameras. 

Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun says the Redmi Note 5 is a well-balanced smartphone with little or no deficiency but that is left for us to decide after the smartphone has been experienced hands-on. However, among the features the device is expected to pack include an AI dual camera, AI face unlock, AI smart beauty feature, AI portrait mode, soft light self-timer, background blur, etc. In essence, both the selfie camera and rear dual shooter would be AI-driven. The main rear camera is also said to feature a  full-pixel dual-core fast focus and a PPI of 1.4um. The samples test the various shooting modes including portrait, Bokeh and others and the shots are pretty impressive. This should be the best we may be seeing from a smartphone in the 1000 Yuan price bracket. It is not a very spectacular performance matching up with the hype about AI cameras.

The camera configuration on China’s Redmi Note 5 include a 13MP front shooter and a 12MP+5MP dual rear camera sensors.  In other aspects, the Redmi Note 5 sports a 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080p. The device will also be the first model in China to utilize the Snapdragon 636 chipset and would have 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM versions only. Both versions will pair up with 64GB of internal storage. In due course, Xiaomi might introduce new versions with smaller memory sizes. The device is also expected to come with a 4000mAH battery, full Netcom 5.0, dual 4G SIM slots and dual standby. Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India as successors to the Redmi Note 4/4X, though the Redmi Note 5 is available in China and some other countries as the Redmi 5 Plus.

On Friday, March 16, the Redmi Note 5 Pro will leave the shores of India and launch in China as the Redmi Note 5 albeit with slightly different features. However, there is a report that China won’t be its only destination.

According to Roland Quandt (@rquandt), the Redmi Note 5 Pro is going international soon with Europe on the list. It will also have the required bands for respective markets. He also adds that when the phone lands in Europe, it will come in a 32GB version that will be priced around €230 and a 64GB model priced around €270.

The Redmi Note 5 is launching on the coming Friday in China and the company is busy building hype around its arrival. The entire specifications of the upcoming Xiaomi phablet have appeared through its TENAA listing. Moreover, since it is said to arrive as rebranded version of Redmi Note 5 Pro that was launched in India in the previous month. Several photos of the Redmi Note 5 have surfaced today from China to reveal its design.

As it can be seen in the the new images, the Redmi Note 5 features a full metallic chassis and its sports the trendy full screen design. The front-facing camera accompanied by its selfie flash can be seen sitting at its top bezel. The backside of the phone is flanked with a fingerprint scanner and a protruding dual camera setup at the top-left corner.

The edges of the rear panel are slightly curved. Its top and bottom portions are flanked with antenna bands. The bottom edge of the phone includes a 3.5mm audio jack, a microUSB slot and an external speaker grille.

The TENAA listing of the Redmi Note 5 has revealed that it is equipped with a 5.99-inch FHD+ resolution display that offers an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Snapdragon 636 chipset will be powering the 4 GB and 6 GB RAM models of Redmi Note 5. These models will feature 64 GB of inbuilt storage.

The Indian Redmi Note 5 Pro has 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera module on its back. It is speculated that the Note 5 for China may arrive with a different set of dual rear cameras. The Note 5 will be arriving with a frontal camera 20-megapixel that will be assisted by a dedicated flash. It will receive power from 3,900mAh battery.

It could be the first Xiaomi phone to come loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo. Also, Xiaomi President Lin Bin has recently confirmed that the handset will be arriving with full screen gestures function out-of-the-box.

The Chinese manufacturer has recently confirmed that the Redmi Note 5 will be arriving with Snapdragon 636 chipset, 6 GB of RAM and AI Smart Beauty feature. Today, Xiaomi President Lin Bin has officially confirmed that the Redmi Note 5 will come with support for full screen gestures out-of-the-box. Also, the key specs of the Note 5 have been revealed on the official Weibo account of Xiaomi Redmi.

Lin Bin has shared a short video clip to show how full screen gestures would work on the Redmi Note 5’s 18:9 aspect ratio display. The video shows that swiping upwards from the bottom of the screen will take the user to the home screen. By sliding upwards from the bottom and pausing will show the recent apps. Swiping right or left from the edge of the screen to the center will take users to the previous page.

As it can be seen in the above image, the official Redmi Weibo account has confirmed that the handset will carry support for Face Unlock, full Netcom 5.0 and it will come preloaded with MIUI 9. It also reveals that it will include a 4,000mAh battery.

It is a known face that the Redmi Note 5 for China is rebranded version of Redmi Note 5 Pro that was launched in India in February. It is speculated that compared to the Indian model, the Chinese version will be featuring different configuration cameras. Rumors claim that it may feature 12-megapixeld dual rear cameras. One of its lenses could be the Sony IMX486 sensor.

As far as other specs of the Redmi Note 5 for China are concerned, it will be coming with a 5.99-inch FHD+ display and 20-megapixel selfie flash enabled front-facing camera. Recent reports have revealed that the Redmi Note 5 variants such as 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage, 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage may arrive in China for 1199 Yuan (~$189), 1499 Yuan (~$235) and 1799 Yuan (~$285).

In related news, the latest MIUI 9.5 beta version includes support for full screen gestures. The new gestures are currently only available on full screen design smartphones from the company such as Mi MIX, MI MIX 2, Redmi Note 5 Pro, Redmi Note 5, Redmi 5 Plus and Redmi 5. Also, only those owners of these devices who have enrolled in the beta testing program can try the full screen gestures.

Earlier this week, Lenovo Group VP Chang Cheng, the former CEO of ZUK Mobile had   confirmed that the Lenovo S5 will be unveiled on March 20 in China. Today, he has claimed on Weibo that the performance of the Lenovo S5 will be better than the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

Earlier today, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had released a new teaser for the forthcoming Redmi Note 5 on Weibo. The teaser revealed that the handset has a powerful configuration as it features Snapdragon 636 chipset and 6 GB of RAM. Through the Weibo post, Jun claimed that Note 5 that will deliver a comprehensive experience through its balanced configuration.

Soon after Jun confirmed on the chipset and RAM information for Note 5 on Weibo, Lenovo Group VP Chang Cheng quoted Jun’s Weibo post and expressed that the Lenovo S5 arriving on March 20 will deliver better performance than the Redmi Note 5.

Last year, Lenovo had shut down it ZUK Mobile sub-brand shortly after it took over Motorola to launch Moto branded phones. Since the Moto phones are not very famous in the home market, Lenovo is reportedly planning to re-enter the smartphone market with Lenovo branded phones. The upcoming Lenovo S5 that will be arriving on March 20 is expected to sport ZUI Android skin that was seen ZUK branded phones.

Shown above is a teaser image of the Lenovo S5. The red-colored S5 features a rear-mounted fingerprint reader and an LED enabled dual camera setup. The handset seems to be sporting a metal unibody design.

The rear view of the Lenovo K520 phone that was recently spotted at TENAA matches with the above image of Lenovo S5. It is speculated that the Lenovo K520 smartphone may launch as Lenovo S5. The Lenovo K520 includes a 5.65-inch display that supports FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels along with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The handset is fueled by an octa-core processor that clocks at 2 GHz.

The SoC is supported by 3 GB and 4 GB of RAM that respectively features 32 GB and 64 GB of internal storage. It will come loaded with Android 8.0 Oreo. It has a selfie camera of 8-megapixel and one of its dual camera sensors is also of 8-megapixel. The smartphone will be powered by 3,000mAh battery.

Xiaomi has recently confirmed that it will be debuting the Redmi Note 5 smartphone in China. Today, Xiaomi CEO Lei June has released a new teaser for the upcoming Redmi Note 5 on his Weibo account. It reveals that the Snapdragon 636 chipset and 6 GB of RAM will be powering the handset.

In February, Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India. The Redmi Note 5 was the very same handset that was launched as Redmi 5 Plus in China in December 2017. The Redmi Note 5 Pro that India received was an entirely new handset. It is the first smartphone ever to feature the Snapdragon 636 chipset.

The new teaser released by Jun suggests that Redmi Note 5 Pro will be launching as Redmi Note 5 in China in the coming week. Hence, the Note 5 is expected to borrow all the specs from Note 5 Pro.

The Redmi Note 5 is pegged to house a 5.99-inch display. It will be supporting Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. It will be delivering an aspect ratio of 18:9. It may feature a 20-megapixel front camera that will be accompanied by a selfie flash. It will be equipped with AI Smart Beauty for snapping enhanced selfie shots.

The Note 5 Pro for India has a dual camera setup featuring a 12-megapiel sensor and a 5-megapixel sensor. It is speculated that the dual cameras on Redmi Note 5 for China will arrive with different configuration than the Indian variant. A 4,000mAh battery coupled with fast charging capabilities may power the handset. It is expected to arrive preinstalled with Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro was released in 4 GB and 6 GB RAM options in India. These models are respectively available with Rs. 13,999 (~$215) and Rs. 16,999 (~$260) pricing. In the last week, Xiaomi had confirmed that Redmi Note 5 will be debuting in China on March 16. Since China is the home country of Xiaomi, the Note 5 variants may arrive with a cheaper pricing.
