Xiaomi ended software support for Mi 10 Lite Zoom, a China-exclusive smartphone in late April. Back then, we suggested that the global Mi 10 Lite 5G may get a similar treatment in a month. This has happened now as the device has been listed on Xiaomi’s official EOS (End of Support) list.

At the same time, the company has dropped software support for three of the Redmi Note 9 series handsets, such as Redmi Note 9S, Redmi Note 9 Pro, and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. Let’s go through the details.

According to Xiaomiui, Xiaomi has added the Mi 10 Lite 5G to its EOS list. This confirms the termination of software support for this phone.

On the other hand, the aforementioned Redmi Note 9 models are yet to be included in the said list. But as per the security bulletin, they are supposed to receive security updates only until May 2023.

As these phones just received a security update in April and May is about to end, there may not be a new software build hereafter. The EOS list will likely be updated in a while with these handsets.

All these smartphones were released in early 2020. So Xiaomi ended their software support 3 years after their release.

For comparison, similarly priced Samsung devices from the same period will continue to receive software support till next year (4 years). But Oppo, Vivo, and Realme have the same policy as Xiaomi.

At the end of January, a report revealed that the Redmi Note 9 series will be blessed with the MIUI 14 update in Q2 2023. As we are approaching the said timeline, two of the devices in the lineup have started receiving the update.

Unfortunately, the latest software update is limited to a select few users. Let’s go through the details.

Redmi Note 9S

According to Xiaomiui, Xiaomi has begun to roll out MIUI 14 update for Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9S. The update is being pushed to the ‘Global’ variants of these handsets.

Unsurprisingly, the firmware is based on Android 12 instead of Android 13. Because these phones were released with Android 10 and they have already received two Android updates.

However, MIUI 13 is their third major MIUI update since they debuted with MIUI 11. It is good that Xiaomi is supporting them for three years of OS updates.

Anyway, as mentioned earlier, the update is only available for ‘Mi Pilot’ testers. It should make its way to a few regular users in form of ‘Stable Beta’ in the coming weeks, followed by the final ‘Stable’ release for all users.

Thus, the update should be out for all units by the end of April or early May. By then, the remaining Redmi Note 9 series models could also be on the beta version of MIUI 14.

Are you excited about the new MIUI update on your Redmi Note 9 series smartphones? Let us know in the comment section below.

Recent findings revealed that the almost 3-year-old Redmi Note 9 series will be updated to MIUI 14. A few days later, the same source has now disclosed when can we expect the rollout to begin.

Unsurprisingly, users of these smartphones will have to wait a bit longer. But thankfully, not so much.

According to Xiaomiui, the following handsets will get access to the MIUI 14 update based on Android 12 in Q2 2023.

Redmi Note 9

Redmi Note 9S

Redmi Note 9 Pro

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max

Poco M2 Pro

For the unaware, all the aforementioned devices are based on the same platform. They only differ in some aspects.

The publication suggests that the latest MIUI for these phones may release around April-May. In other words, users will have to wait around three months.

Apart from the smartphones listed above, the MIUI 14 update will be also released for the Redmi 10X series, Redmi 9, and Poco M2. Even for them, the software build will be based on Android 12, rather than Android 13.

But unfortunately, the update release timeline for them is not known at the moment. The rollout may most probably occur around the same time.

All of these handsets have already received two MIUI updates and two Android updates. MIUI 14 will be most likely their last major software update.

The discontinuation will be done after November 11’s Singles Day sale. For those unfamiliar, Singles Day is a Chinese unofficial holiday and shopping season that’s not unlike America’s Black Friday.

While the exact Redmi Note 9 series model to be discontinued has gone unmentioned, it’s most likely the Redmi Note 9 5G (Mi 10i). The phone may be joined by the delisting of the entire Redmi Note 9 series as well, comprised of the likes of the Redmi Note 9S and Redmi Note 9 Pro.

There hasn’t been any word if the discontinuation will be carried forward outside of China as well, although it is quite possible.

Redmi Note 9 5G

It sure is quite early for the series to die considering it made its debut only last year, but it is now superseded by the Redmi Note 10 series followed by the Redmi Note 11 series, so it figures. Xiaomi would not want the older models to cannibalize the sales of the newer models.

The Redmi Note 10 series saw great success when it went live in March this year and the Redmi Note 11 lineup seems to be following in its footsteps. The latter first went on sale on November 1st and sold over 500,000 units in just an hour.

The Redmi Note 11 Pro+ comes with some pretty compelling specs including a 120Hz Samsung AMOLED panel, 120W fast charging support, JBL stereo speakers, and a boxier design.

The series which launched this year already has eight models in total, some of which are exclusive to select markets. Now, a new model is coming to India and it will launch as the Redmi Note 10 Lite.

Evidence of the device’s existence was found by Kacper Skrzypek (@kacskrz), and from one of the two images he shared, the phone has the model number 2109106A1I. The more interesting info is the second image which reveals that the Redmi Note 10 Lite has the codename “curtana”. Doesn’t ring a bell?

For those who don’t know, “curtana” is the codename of the Redmi Note 9 Pro (India) which is also the device sold in other markets as the Redmi Note 9S. What this means is that the Redmi Note 10 Lite is a rebadged Redmi Note 9 Pro (India)/Redmi Note 9S! Yes, Redmi is relaunching last year’s phone under a new name.

There are speculations that the Redmi Note 10 Lite may be slightly different from the Redmi Note 9 Pro (India)/Redmi Note 9S. It remains to be seen what this difference is and if it will result in a higher price tag.

This data is sourced from the firm’s own ‘Xiaomi Data Center’.

It is not surprising to learn that the global shipments of the Redmi Note series have exceeded 200 million units since its inception. This series has been the heart of Xiaomi’s product lineup ever since it was introduced.

Redmi Notes have been unbeatable in their price segment for a very long time. However, that began to change when realme entered the scene. But being an established product lineup, they are still as popular as they were before.

That said, Xiaomi is known for announcing its milestones ahead of releasing new devices. Hence, we think the Redmi Note 10 series is just around the corner.
The new update with build number V12.0.1.0.RJWMIXM is rolling out to certain Redmi Note 9S users. This is because the update is currently in the ‘Stable Beta’ stage. Xiaomi usually tests the waters before confirming that the build doesn’t have any critical bugs.

That said, this update, weighing around 2.5GB, will soon roll out to all the Global users in the coming days. Talking about the changelog, it upgrades the Android to the latest version. Additionally, it also changes the security patch to January 2021. To recall, this device has already got the MIUI 12 update.

However, unlike the MIUI version, which came a few weeks after Note 9 Pro, the update for the latest Android is coming three months later. Anyway, the update is here, and this could be the last Major Android upgrade for the Note 9S.

The Redmi Note 9S, which debuted with MIUI 11 and Android 10, has now got the one major Android update so don’t expect any further. However, this device could get the intermediate MIUI 12.5 update but let’s wait for the confirmation.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi is getting ready to launch the MIUI 12.5 Globally on February 8. The launch event will also see the Mi 11 flagship debut globally and as per a tip given to us, a Mi 11 ‘Lite’ is also said to launch alongside the event.

Multiple Redmi Note 9S users have shared a common WiFi bug on forums like Mi Community and XDA. According to them, the phone randomly disconnects from the internet on WiFi after 10-15 minutes from locking the screen.

Also, the data transmission won’t resume on WiFi even after unlocking the phone. The issue seems to be limited to the European variant of the handset as there are no reports from Indian users.

Some users claim the latest MIUI 11.0.8.0 Global Stable build partially fixes the bug as per Android Authority. The fix in question involves the phone logging out of the network every 10 minutes, followed by a login within a few seconds but this is not a perfect solution.

On a regular basis, all Android devices reconnect to a WiFi network every few hours to renew the IP address. But the Redmi Note 9S is doing the same procedure for every few minutes. This is absurd even when we think of it.

We hope Xiaomi fixes it properly via future OTA update as it seems like a software issue rather hardware as units running MIUI India build does not have the same problem.

Design

With their punch-hole displays, these three handsets look very modern despite their very affordable prices. If you want the best materials, you should go for the Redmi Note 9S since it is built with a glass back. But I like the Realme 6s more due to its less intrusive camera module and its smaller dimensions. I would not go for the Oppo A52 due to its bigger camera module and due to the fact that it does not offer any protection against water, while Redmi Note 9S and Realme 6s are splash resistant.

Display

Realme 6s is equipped with the most exciting display as it is the only one to feature a high 90 Hz refresh rate. Redmi Note 9S has a wider panel, but it has a standard 60 Hz refresh rate just like the Oppo A52. In each case, you get an average IPS display with a Full HD+ resolution, so no huge differences in terms of image quality. That is why Realme 6s wins the display comparison without any doubt.

Specs & Software

Here is a hard fight between Realme 6s and Redmi Note 9S. A lot of people prefer Qualcomm chipsets (like the Snapdragon 720G found on the Redmi Note 9S), but MediaTek Helio G90T is a very powerful SoC with high CPU and GPU performances. However, we are going to give the hardware award to the Redmi Note 9S since it comes in a configuration with more RAM and more internal storage (6/128 GB), while Realme 6s is only available in a 4/64 GB version. If you need better hardware with the same specifications as the Realme 6s, go for the Realme 6 which offers up to 8 GB of RAM. Oppo A52 has lower performance due to its Snapdragon 665, but it is the only with stereo speakers. Android 10 is naturally preinstalled on each of these devices.

Camera

On the paper, the rear camera setup offered by the Redmi Note 9S is the best one. But there are just marginal differences if we compare it to the Realme 6s: it has a 5 MP macro sensor instead of the 2 MP macro lens found on the Realme 6s. Instead, the Oppo A52 loses the battle due to its inferior main sensor with a 12 MP resolution, as well as an inferior front camera.

Battery

Unfortunately, we still had no chance to test the battery life of all of these devices. Judging from the specifications, Redmi Note 9S (which comes with more or less the same battery capacity as the Oppo A52) should last more in a lot of scenarios due to its more efficient chipset built at 8 nm. Realme 6s will most likely be the one with the shortest battery life (still a good battery phone, tho), but it charges a lot faster because of its smaller battery capacity and the fastest charging technology.

Price

Both Realme 6s and Oppo A52 start at €199/$219 globally. Redmi Note 9S begins at €229, but you can easily find it for less than €200 thanks to street prices. The Redmi Note 9S is definitely interesting in that price segment because it offers a huge battery and an amazing Qualcomm chipset, but despite its smaller battery, Realme 6s remains a valid alternative due to its high performances and 90 Hz display. In regards to the Oppo A52, wait for its price to drop.

It is not exactly the same lineup we saw in India as the Pro variant is actually different from the Indian Note 9 Pro. Since their prices are close to each other, in order to highlight all the differences between the three models launched in Europe, we decided to bring all the variants in an in-depth specs comparison. Here you will learn all the details about the specifications and you should be able to realize which one has the best value for money depending on your needs.

Design

Redmi Note 9 Pro has a slightly more attractive design than Note 9 and 9S because on its rear side you can find a smaller camera module. The handset has a glass back made of two parts with different hues. Note 9S comes right after with its glass back and the same screen-to-body ratio as the Note 9 Pro. The vanilla Note 9 has a definitely uglier back which includes a fingerprint reader (the fingerprint scanner is side-mounted on the other two variants) and thicker bezels around the display, but it is more compact because its screen has a smaller diagonal.

Display

Redmi Note 9S and 9 Pro are equipped with the same display panel: an IPS screen with a 6.67-inch diagonal and a Full HD+ resolution. Nothing special, but sufficient for a midrange phone. Note 9 has a smaller diagonal, but the display offers the same specifications. In each case, you will get an average IPS and Full HD+ display with a standard refresh rate. If you are looking for high quality in terms of display or smoother user experience, you should opt for something else.

Specs & Software

Redmi Note 9S and Note 9 Pro offer more premium hardware. Both are fueled by the Snapdragon 720G SoC which is a preferred choice over the Helio G85 found on Note 9. They offer up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of UFS 2.1 internal storage. The Note 9 pairs the Helio G85 with max 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Given that they are three variants of the same lineup, it is kinda obvious that you get the same operating system: Android 10 customized by MIUI 11.

Camera

The main difference inside the Redmi Note 9 series regards the camera department. On the rear side, you get a different camera setup depending on the handset you go for. The most advanced is the Note 9 Pro which boasts a better 64 MP main sensor, an ultrawide lens with an 8 MP resolution, a 5 MP macro camera, and a 2 MP depth sensor. Note 9S has the same secondary sensors, but the main lens is an inferior 48 MP sensor. The front camera is the same as well, with a 16 MP resolution. Note 9 has the same rear camera setup as the Note 9S with the exception of the macro sensor (2 MP). It also sports an inferior 13 MP selfie camera.

Battery

With exactly the same battery capacity, you would get a similar battery life with the whole lineup. And it is amazing battery life, given the 5020 mAh capacity. Redmi Note 9 is expected to go out of charge before the other two variants due to a less efficient chipset built with a 12 nm production process against 8 nm. On the other hand, Note 9 can also be used as a power bank thanks to its 9W reverse charging technology. Note 9 Pro wins when it comes to the charging speed thanks to a 30W power.

Price

Redmi Note 9 begins at €180/$200, Note 9S has a €219/$243 starting price, and Note 9 Pro costs €250/$277 in its base variant. If you do not care about the camera at all and you do not need the fastest charging technology, Note 9S gives you all you need. Otherwise, go for the Redmi Note 9 Pro. Note 9 has less impressive hardware and camera than both its rivals, it is a good option only if you want to save the highest amount of money.

Design

The most premium design is offered by the Poco X2. The Indian rebrand of the Redmi K30 4G is the only phone in this trio sporting an aluminum frame paired with a glass back. Realme 6 Pro is slightly more compact, but it has a plastic frame instead of an aluminum one, just like the Redmi Note 9S. In each case, you get protection against water (they are splash resistant), but they are not waterproof. Both the front glass and the glass back are protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

Display

Poco X2 is one of the few and most affordable smartphones with a display supporting a 120 Hz refresh rate and it wins the display comparison. All of these devices come with a Full HD+ IPS panel and a high refresh rate makes the difference with such displays. Further, Poco X2 supports HDR10, while its rivals do not. Righ after, we got the Realme 6 Pro with a still high 90 Hz refresh rate (unlike the Redmi Note 9S).

Specs & Software

With the Poco X2, you get a better processor, so also better performance. The Snapdragon 730G is obviously superior to the Snapdragon 720G, despite the latter is a more recent chipset. It has higher CPU and GPU performance, but the same efficiency. In its high-end memory configuration, Poco X2 also offers more internal storage: up to 256 GB. Redmi Note 9S and Realme 6 Pro have the same chipset, but Realme 6 Pro offers up to 8 GB of RAM while Redmi Note 9S stops at 6 GB. That is the reason why Realme 6 Pro takes the silver medal in the hardware comparison. Redmi Note 9S and Poco X2 run Android 10 customized by MIUI 11, while Realme 6 Pro has the Realme UI, still based on Android 10, out of the box.

Camera

The camera award goes to the Realme 6 Pro. What makes the difference on the rear side is its 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Instead of a telephoto lens, Redmi Note 9S and Poco X2 come with a pretty standard 2 MP depth sensor. Further, Realme 6 Pro is the only which offers an ultrawide dual front camera. The second place in the camera ranking goes to the Poco X2 coming with a 64 MP quad camera on the rear side and a dual camera on the front side including a depth sensor. Redmi Note 9S is inferior to both with its 48 MP quad camera and a single 16 MP selfie snapper.

Battery

Finally a moment of glory even for the Redmi Note 9S: thanks to its huge 5020 mAh battery, it is the king of battery life. Realme 6 Pro and Poco X2 are more or less at the same level even though their battery capacities are not the same, but Realme 6 Pro charges faster.

Price

In India, Redmi Note 9S is pretty affordable with a starting price of $249/€228, Realme 6 Pro starts at $228/€209, and Poco X2 is actually available for about $210/€192. If we exclude the battery life, Redmi Note 9S lags behind its two rivals. Realme 6 Pro wins the camera comparison (both front and rear cameras), while Poco X2 has a better display and a better chipset.

The latest arrival is the Infinix Note 7, bringing a huge display and a powerful chipset to the market at a very affordable price. We think it is time to compare it with other potential best-sellers in the Indian market. We chose the Redmi Note 9S and the Realme C3 because we believe they are potential best-sellers in that price range. Here is an in-depth comparison of the specifications.

Design

With their punch-hole displays, glass backs and very narrow bezels, Redmi Note 9S and Infinix Note 7 have impressive designs, if we consider that they are just affordable phones. The Infinix Note 7 is one of the biggest mid-rangers out there, so not everyone may be comfortable with it. That is one of the reasons why Redmi Note 9S wins the design comparison. Redmi Note 9S and Realme C3 are splash resistant, but while the Redmi Note 9S has a glass back, Realme C3 has a full plastic design. On the other hand, Realme C3 is the most compact device of the trio.

Display

Redmi Note 9S is also the winner of the display comparison. The reason is simple: its display has a higher resolution: while Infinix Note 7 and Realme C3 come with HD+ displays, Redmi Note 9S has a Full HD+ resolution with a higher pixel density and a higher level of detail. It even boasts pretty high brightness, but the panel is a classic IPS and not an AMOLED display. Infinix Note 7 remains interesting because it has a huge 6.95-inch panel, despite HD+ resolution on a so big display is not the best solution a manufacturer can adopt.

Specs & Software

Again, Redmi Note 9S takes the gold medal. It has a way more powerful chipset: the octa-core Snapdragon 720G by Qualcomm paired with up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB UFS 2.1 internal storage. It is a better SoC for gaming, power users, and productivity. Both Infinix Note 7 and Realme C3 pack the Helio G70 SoC paired with slower eMMC 5.1 native storage. Realme C3 loses the comparison against Infinix Note 7 due to its lower amount of RAM: 4 GB against 6 GB. But each of the devices offers Android 10 out of the box.

Camera

Redmi Note 9S has the most advanced camera departments and it offers better sensors on the back. Both Redmi Note 9S and Infinix Note 7 have a 48 MP main sensor, but Redmi Note 9S has better secondary sensors including an 8 MP ultrawide lens, a 5 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. With the Infinix Note 7, you get three 2 MP secondary sensors including a dedicated video camera. On the paper, the front camera of the Infinix Note 7 looks better. Realme C3 is pretty disappointing on the camera side with an inferior 12 MP main sensor and a 5 MP front camera.

Battery

The best battery phone here should be Realme C3. It has a 5000 mAh battery just like the Infinix Note 7 (Redmi Note 9S has 5020 mAh), but it has a smaller display and it should be more efficient. Unfortunately, we still did not test the battery life of the Infinix Note 7 because we make comparisons as soon as smartphones get announced.

Price

Infinix hasn’t yet shared the pricing details of the Infinix Note 7. Redmi Note 9S is sold at a price ranging from $190 to $210 depending on the market (we still do not know how much it will cost in India), while Realme C3 starts from just $98 and it offers a higher value for money. But the winner of this comparison is the Redmi Note 9S which offers a better display and higher performance, as well as a more promising camera setup.

For the CPU test, it scored 102620 points and 71921 points on the GPU test while the memory test had a score of 53410 points. Finally, the Redmi Note 9S’ user interface (UX) scored 53410 points. The two phones are the latest devices in the Redmi Note series and they pack some pretty interesting specs.

Fans of the series were surprised at the addition of a new model with the “Max” suffix and equally astonished that a standard/non-Pro model was not announced. Now, Xiaomi Malaysia has announced that it plans to launch a new Redmi Note phone next week and it will arrive as the Redmi Note 9S.

The Redmi Note 9S is scheduled to be announced on March 23, and from the teaser poster, it will also have four rear cameras arranged in the same fashion as those of its siblings in India. Another image posted on their Facebook page confirms the phone will have a punch hole in the middle of the screen.

It is still unknown if this is a different model entirely or one of the already announced devices with a new name. Nevertheless, we look forward to its launch.

This is not the first Redmi Note phone with an “S” at the back of its name. Last year, Xiaomi announced the Redmi Note 7S in India which is actually a version of the Redmi Note 7 with a 48MP primary rear camera. It was announced a few months after the Redmi Note 7 which has a 12MP primary rear camera.

Then take a picture of a Redmi Note device you own and post it on Instagram with a 30-word caption telling your story with the said device (an experience or something along that line). Make sure you tag Xiaomi Malaysia on the post. The competition began on Friday, the 13th of March and it runs till Friday, the 20th of March.
