In early August, Xiaomi rolled out MIUI 12 update to Redmi S2 in China. This smartphone is also known as Redmi Y2 in India. It was the second device in the now-defunct selfie-focused Redmi Y series lineup of phones. Now, almost two months later, this variant of the handset, as well as the global variant of Redmi S2 that was sold in countries like Indonesia, has begun to receive the update to the latest version of Xiaomi’s mobile operating system.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2/Y2 launched in the first half of 2018 with MIUI 9.5 based on Android Oreo out of the box. The device was later updated to MIUI 10 and MIUI 11 subsequently. However, it only got a single Android update (Android Pie). Now, the company has started seeding out MIUI 12 to this phone.

The MIUI 12 global update for Redmi S2/Y2 is currently being rolled out to random users with build number V12.0.2.0.PEFMIXM. If these users don’t face any serious issues, this very same build be seeded out to more users and maybe even ever unit in the coming days.

Having said that, MIUI 12 is the last major update for Xiaomi Redmi S2/Y2. Anyway, it is worth noting that this smartphone may receive some bug fix builds and security patches if needed.

Xiaomi’s Global VP and Managing Director for India, Manu Kumar Jain has revealed through a tweet that new Redmi phone is coming. Some clues from his tweet suggest that he his hinting about the upcoming selfie-centric Y-series smartphone. He could be teasing the arrival of the 32-megapixel selfie camera enabled Redmi Y3 smartphone.

In the below shown tweet, Jain has claimed that he has taken 32 selfies with the new smartphone. Yesterday, Redmi President for China had asked Redmi fans that whether the company should be releasing a phone with a 32-megapixel selfie camera. Hence, it appears that the Redmi Y3 could be the first smartphone from the company to arrive with 32-megapixel selfie camera. The smartphone may launch as Redmi S3 in China. While the Redmi Y3 will be the Redmi Y2 in India, the Redmi S3 could be replacing the Redmi S2 phone from last year.

Earlier this month, leaked information had revealed that the company may launch the Redmi Y3 phone in India after the launch of Redmi 7 smartphone in India. Hence, there is a possibility that Xiaomi may announce the Redmi 7 phone within this month and then unveil the Redmi Y3 smartphone in the coming month. The Y3 phone has already bagged Wi-Fi certification. Some market may receive the same smartphone as Redmi 7 Pro.

The Redmi Y3 could be equipped with 32-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright GD1 sensor that was unleashed along with 48-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor in October 2018. Various smartphones such as Huawei P30, P30 Pro, Vivo V15 Pro and Samsung Galaxy A70 are all equipped with Bright GD1 32-megapixel selfie camera. The selfie snapping senor could be available on the Redmi Y3 smartphone. The GD1 senor will be also available on some of the other upcoming phones such as Honor 20i, Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro smartphones.

At present, there is no information available on the specifications of the smartphone. It is speculated that the handset may sport a waterdrop-style notched display. Xiaomi has confirmed the list of smartphones that will be treated with Android 9 Pie OS update. Before rolling out the stable update to as many as 10 smartphones, the Chinese manufacturer will be releasing the global beta edition of the update. Among them two are scheduled to receive the beta version by the end of this month. Five more will be getting it in the next quarter and there is no timeline decided for the remaining three phones.

The Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Y2 (known as Redmi S2 in China) are scheduled to be treated with Android 9 Pie beta edition within this quarter. In the second quarter, it will be coming to handsets like Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, Mi 6, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Mi Note 3.

The Android 9 Pie global beta update status for Redmi Note 6 Pro, Mi 6X and Mi 9 Explorer Edition is still in development stage. For Chinese audience, the update will include MIUI China ROM whereas the global users will be provided with MIUI Global ROM. Once the beta edition is available, the company will announce its arrival through its forums and app.

The aforementioned list had surfaced on the official MIUI forums site. An administrator on the discussion board claimed the that the list is incomplete. He stated that once existing devices are provided with Oreo update, the list will be updated with newer phones that can be upgraded to Android 9 Pie OS.

A couple of months ago, Xiaomi announced a price drop of Rs. 1,000 ($14) on Redmi Y2 along with Mi A2 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. Now, the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 has received yet another price cut of Rs. 1,000 in India.

Xiaomi has today announced a price drop on a number of smartphones in the Indian market, including Redmi Note 5 Pro, Mi A2, and Redmi Y2. Explaining the reason behind the price drop, the company said that the cost of components for some of Xiaomi’s phones have reduced.

Further, the company said that it has a philosophy of honest pricing where they have capped their profit margin to 5 percent for a hardware product. So, if the company makes more profit, it gives back to the Mi Fans, and this development is a part of that philosophy.

The company has permanently dropped the prices of Redmi Note 5 Pro, Mi A2, and Redmi Y2 by Rs. 1,000, which roughly converts to $14. The 4GB RAM model of Redmi Note 5 Pro now costs Rs. 13,999 (~$195) while the 6GB RAM model costs Rs. 15,999 (approx. $223).

On the other hand, the Mi A2 4GB RAM model is available for Rs. 15,999 (~$223) and the 6GB RAM model is available for Rs. 18,999 (approximately $264). The selfie-centric Redmi Y2 will now be available for Rs. 11,999 (approx. $167).

Moreover, Xiaomi was announced as the number one smartphone vendor in India for the 5th consecutive quarter, as per IDC Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Xiaomi said that as a celebration of that achievement, it has announced the price drop.

And when the Chinese firm had launched the Redmi Y1 smartphone in India in November. it had used the same platform to announce the rollout of MIUI 9 Global ROM. Xiaomi India has scheduled a launch event in India on June 7, where the company is expected to launch its new selfie-focused smartphone. The Chinese manufacturer is expected to launch Redmi Y2, which is the rebranded model of Redmi S2 that was recently launched in China.

While the smartphone’s name has already been confirmed through a leaked benchmark listing, now latest information related to the smartphone has surfaced online, confirming that the Redmi Y2 will be Amazon exclusive in India.

A photo of the smartphone shared by the company has revealed that the device will come with a Dual SIM support and a dedicated microSD card slot in a single SIM tray. Recent benchmark listing has revealed that the smartphone will pack 3GB RAM and will be running Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box. As of the processor, the smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz.

The smartphone is expected to come with 5.99-inch HD+ display with 2.5D curved glass on top, 18:9 aspect ratio and a screen resolution of 1440 × 720 pixels. Further, it has 1000:1 contrast ratio, 450 nits Brightness, and 70.8% NTSC color gamut.

While the Geekbench listing shows 3GB RAM, it is expected that the smartphone will also have another variant with 4GB RAM. The 3GB RAM model will pack 32GB internal storage and the 4GB RAM model will come with 64GB internal storage. There’ll also be a microSD card slot for storage expansion up to 256GB.

In the camera department, the phone is expected to sport a 12MP rear camera with LED Flash, 1.25μm pixel size, PDAF, f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP secondary sensor. On the front side, it will come with a 16MP snapper along with an LED flash.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y-series is focused on the front-facing camera and the upcoming Y2 is also expected to follow the suit. It is expected to come with AI-based features to improve the captured images, including two major AI modes — AI portrait and AI beauty.

The Redmi Y2 is said to be the rebranded model of the Redmi S2 that was recently launched in China. Now, ahead of the scheduled launch on 7th June, the Redmi Y2 has now appeared on benchmarking portal Geekbench.

Xiaomi has been consistently releasing teasers of the upcoming Redmi phone through its Redmi India Twitter. All the teasers contain #FindYourSelfie and #RealYou hashtags which indicates that it could be a selfie-centric. Xiaomi has recently launched the Redmi S2 selfie-focused smartphone in China. It is speculated that the very same phone could be heading to India as Redmi Y2, the successor of the Redmi Y1 phone that was launched last year.

The new teaser released by the Chinese manufacturer has a sketch of a human face on the left side and the other side features a camera sensor. This indicates that the upcoming Redmi phone will be coming with AI driven selfie camera.

The Redmi S2 phone features a 16-megapixel front camera that is powered by AI. The company has included a dedicated LED flash for the selfie camera. The Redmi S2 includes 5.99-inch display that produces HD+ resolution. The 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM variants of the phone are fueled by Snapdragon 625 SoC. The Redmi S2 was announced last week and the new smartphone is being touted as a selfie king. For those who live in India and are wondering when it will arrive, it may be launching sooner than expected.

Xiaomi’s Global VP and MD of Xiaomi India – Manu Kumar Jain, has revealed in a tweet that the Redmi S2 is coming to India. Although he doesn’t explicitly mention the Redmi S2, he refers to it as the “BEST selfie phone”. Seeing as Xiaomi is marketing its new phone using the same words, it’s just a matter of putting 2 and 2 together.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 is a 5.99” phone with an HD+ resolution. It is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of storage. It also has a dedicated SIM slot.

Xiaomi is reportedly working on a successor model for the Mi 5X phone that was introduced in July last year. Its successor phone – the Xiaomi Mi 6X has been already certified by TENAA authority in China. Just as the Mi 5X was introduced as Mi A1 Android One phone outside of China, the Mi 6X is also pegged to be available as Mi A2 outside of the home market. A tipster was able to find references of Mi A2 and the upcoming Redmi Y2 phone in the source code of the Indian version of the official site of Xiaomi. This suggest that the Xiaomi Mi A2 and Redmi Y2 may debut in India soon.

Texts such as “Mi A2 Hard Case”, “Redmi Y2 Perforated Case Black” and “Redmi Y2 Perforated Case Blue” has been spotted in the source code of Xiaomi’s site. As of this writing, they are no longer available on the website as they have been removed. However, the tipster was able to capture the following screenshots.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 could be an Android One phone like its predecessor. It is likely to arrive with same specs that are available on Mi 6X. Hence, it is rumored to arrive with a 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen that supports FHD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. It is expected to be available in 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variants. For photography, it may feature a dual camera module that may include a 12-megapixel sensor and a 20-megapixel sensor. For shooting selfies, it may house the same 20-megapixel front-facing camera that is available on the Redmi Note 5 Pro that was launched in February in India. It is speculated to be powered by Snapdragon 636 SoC and it may feature a 2,910mAh battery.

Last year, Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 5A and Redmi Note 5A and Note 5A Prime in China. The same phones later made their way to India as Redmi Y1 Lite and Redmi Y2. The appearance of Redmi Y2 in the source code of Xiaomi’s site hints that its arrival is drawing near. The comapny may also debut the Redmi Y2 Lite alongside the Y2. However, as of this writing, there is no information available on the specs, features and pricing of Y2 and Y2 Lite.
