In a bold move to keep up with competitors, Instagram is preparing to extend the maximum length of its Reels feature to 10 minutes, according to mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi. Currently capped at three minutes, this change will not only give Instagram an edge but will also force us to rethink how we categorize social media platforms.

While TikTok has been allowing its users to upload 10-minute videos, Instagram’s leap into the extended video space proves it’s unwilling to be pigeonholed as a platform only for photos and short videos. It appears to be part of a larger trend where social media giants are no longer content with sticking to their original niches. The long-standing descriptors of Instagram as the “photo platform,” TikTok as the “short video platform,” and YouTube as the “long video platform” are becoming obsolete.

YouTube is another case in point. In a seemingly paradoxical move, it’s reaching for a share of the short-form video market, introducing features that make it look more like TikTok. So, what’s the endgame here? It’s simple: to be the “all-in-one” platform.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, confirmed that the screenshots shared about the Reels extension are from an “internal prototype.” While they didn’t specify when this change would roll out, it’s clear that the lines between these platforms are blurring at an unprecedented rate. It’s not just about keeping up anymore; it’s about breaking barriers and expanding horizons.

Facebook introduces new tools to personalize and discover Reels

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has recently announced new features to enhance users’ experience with Reels, Facebook’s short-form video content. With Reels’ growing popularity on the platform, Meta aims to help users discover and personalize content that matches their interests.

To improve the discovery of relevant Reels, Facebook has introduced new updates to how they are surfaced in Facebook Watch. Reels can now be accessed directly from the main navigation at the top of Facebook Watch, providing users with quick access to creators, trends, and content that align with their interests. Users can also seamlessly scroll between Reels and long-form videos while watching videos on Facebook.

Personalize Your Reels Feed

In addition to making it easier to discover relevant content, Meta has introduced features that allow users to personalize their Reels experience. Users can now tap the three-dot menu at the bottom of the video player to inform the types of Reels they would like to see more or less of. This feature will help users explore what they enjoy now while also helping them discover new interests, creators, and communities they’ll love in the future.

Furthermore, Facebook has launched a new feature on the Reels video player that provides contextual labels. These labels aim to clarify why a particular Reel is being shown to the user. For example, if a friend liked the video, the label would explain why it’s on the user’s feed. This feature will help users understand the relevance of the Reels they’re seeing and give them more insight into their personalized Reels feed.

Facebook launches Reels, its short video feature, in over 150 countries

Facebook is launching Reels, its short video features, across more than 150 nations. The announcement was made by its parent company, Meta, who also said that the feature was its fastest content format.

According to a Reuters report, the popular social media platform is pushing Reels as the next big thing, owing to its rapid growth in recent times. The news arrives as the popular social media platform lost a third of its market value, as per a recent earnings report. For those unaware, Meta had initially launched Reels on Instagram back in 2020 and later released it on Facebook in the following year. The new content format was made to rival another popular short video sharing platform, TikTok, which is owned by China based ByteDance.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, stated in a Facebook post that “Reels is already our fastest growing content format by far, and today we’re making it available to everyone on Facebook globally.” Interestingly, the company also announced new ways for content creators to make money through the Reels feature. It is further growing its program that helps pay creators bonuses in more countries and is even testing out overlay ads through banners and stickers for creators to earn ad revenue.

This feature is also set to soon show full screen ads in between Reels as well. Notably, Meta also added that it will roll out updates for users to make and see Facebook Reels in new places. This includes places like Stories, on the Watch tab, and even at the top of the news feeds as well. Some regions will also see suggested Reels in their feed as well.

Instagram expands shopping service support to IGTV and Reels

Social media platform Instagram has announced that the platform’s IGTV and Reels section is getting support for the Instagram Shopping Service. With this, users can now watch a video and then check out a product in a few steps.

This is not a surprising move given that e-commerce has been a part of the company’s growth strategy. The expansion of shopping services across the Instagram platform comes at a time when holiday season shopping is about to begin in the United States.

Commenting on this development, Instagram Chief Operating Officer Justin Osofsky said: “By bringing shopping to IGTV and Reels, we’re making it easy to shop directly from videos. And in turn, helping sellers share their story, reach customers, and make a living.”

In the year 2018, Instagram added a personalized Shopping channel in the Explore section, which was later expanded to Shopping tags to Stories. Last year, the company introduced another feature called Checkout, which enables users to directly transact within the app. Recently, the Shop section on Instagram has been redesigned and the service is powered by Facebook Pay.

Instagram saw the potential for shopping in this short-form video content market and it seems that Walmart is also seeing the potential in “social commerce” as it is acquiring a minor stake in TikTok along with Oracle.

While shopping features are now available for IGTV on the Instagram platform, the company says that Reels will get support for the feature “later this year” but as of now, there’s no specific timeline for it.

TikTok gets a new rival as Instagram officially launches Reels

US President Donald Trump’s threat to ban TikTok has been in the news for quite a while and is responsible for Microsoft’s bid to acquire the social media giant’s US business. While a deal is yet to be struck, Instagram has launched its own video sharing platform that is aimed at taking on TikTok.

The platform known as Reels was first launched Brazil two months back. But now, the company has announced that the platform will be available on the Instagram app. The feature will allow users to record and edit 15-second multi-clip videos with audio, effects, and new creative tools. The feature will be made available in 50 countries.

The Instagram Reels is located in the Instagram Camera, the button in the top left corner with an overhaul of the entire interface. There are now several tools for editing. This includes adding Audio, AR Effects, Timer and Countdown for all the fun dances you want to do.

Users can share Reels the same way they share Live videos or regular posts but there is a dedicated tab on the profile where the videos will be located which makes it visible to everyone. Alternatively, only your followers can see the videos ff you set your privacy settings to Private.

There are also options of saving a reel as a draft before publishing. The cover image can also be changed and all other features that come to play when posting a video. The process of watching a ree posted by someone is also akin to viewing a regular photo or video. It appears either in the Feed or in the Discover tab. Instagram is also tagging some as “Featured” to “help users discover original content that will entertain and inspire”.

As of now, Instagram is yet to release a list of the countries where Reels will be available but Brazil, where it was tested, is definitely one of them.
