Oppo recently launched the Reno 12 series smartphones in the global market. These are Oppo’s premium mid-range offerings with the spotlight on the Reno 12 Pro model. While there are many new and exciting things about this device, the main question on our minds is how this device compares to the last generation of Reno 11 Pro. Reno 12 Pro has a unique display design

Oppo has made noticeable changes to the design of the Reno 12 Pro compared to the Reno 11 Pro. The Reno 11 Pro had an overall curved design, while the Reno 12 Pro combines flat sides and a flat back with a new “Infinite View Screen”. This screen is a flat display with curved edges, similar to the “2.5D” displays often seen on smartwatches.

The camera island now has a more mainstream rectangular design, compared to the pill-shaped design of the Reno 11 Pro. The device has also shed some weight and slimmed down to 7.55 mm compared to 8.19 mm on last year’s model.

Other than the new Reno 12 Pro pretty much has the same display specifications as the Reno 11 Pro, offering a 6.7-inch 2772 x 1240 pixels display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a slightly higher peak brightness of 1200 nits. That said, the one major change in the display department is the inclusion of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, replacing the Asahi glass AGC.

Reno 12 Pro comes with a weaker SoC compared to last year

For some reason, the global variant of the Reno 12 Pro has been fitted with a Dimensity 7300 Energy chip, which is a bit inferior when compared to the Dimensity 8200 onboard the Reno 11 Pro. As per AnTuTu scores of these devices, the Reno 12 Pro has a marginal lead in the CPU department, however, the GPU is about 30% better, which will surely make a difference while playing games.

Additionally, the new Reno 12 Pro is also equipped with LPDDR4X RAM, which is also a headscratcher since the Reno 11 Pro from last year features LPDDR5X RAM, which is significantly faster and energy efficient. Both devices use UFS 3.1 storage.

Both smartphones feature 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging, however, the newer model comes with a larger 5,000mAh battery compared to the 4,600mAh on the Reno 11 Pro.

Camera hardware is a mixed basket

The camera system on the Reno 12 Pro features the recently released 50 MP Sony LYT-600 sensor for its primary camera, which is respectable for a mid-ranger. That said, it is hard to ignore the fact that the Reno 11 Pro launched with the flagship-grade Sony IMX890 50 MP sensor, which is significantly better than the LYT-600.

For starters, the IMX890 sensor is physically bigger than the LYT-600, allowing for more light capture, which in turn means better performance in low-light conditions and better dynamic range. Additionally, the IMX890 has a bigger pixel size that also helps in low-light photography.

All that said, the telephoto camera on the newer model has an improved 50 MP sensor replacing the 32MP sensor on the Reno 11 Pro. Both drives offer 2x optical zoom and share the same 8 MP ultra-wide camera sensor.

The selfie camera has been upgraded to a 50 MP unit, replacing the 32 MP sensor of its predecessor. Additionally, the device also claims to have improved video stabilization while recording using the front camera.

Reno 12 Pro has many AI features

While the Reno 11 Pro had AI features like face retouching and an object remover, the Reno 12 Pro offers several improvements. These include AI Eraser 2.0 for easy removal of unwanted objects from photos, AI Clear Face for better clarity and reduced distortion in group shots, AI Best Face to fix closed eyes in group photos, and AI Smart Image Matting 2.0 for quick cutouts and adding creative elements to photos.

The Dimensity 7300 Energy SoC, with its improved NPU, enhances AI functionalities but does not offer the same level of raw performance in demanding tasks like gaming.

Additionally, the primary camera has been reduced in quality, while the front and telephoto cameras have been improved. All that said, it is hard to justify the Reno 12 Pro as a successor to the Reno 11 Pro, since from a practical standpoint, the only thing it has going for it are the software features.

After the recent launch of the Oppo Reno 12 series in the Chinese market, the brand has now confirmed that the series will also be launching globally in the coming weeks. While specifications of the global model of these devices have not been confirmed, reports have claimed that the Reno 12 5G and the Reno 12 Pro 5G will both feature the recently announced Dimensity 7300 SoC.

In addition to that, tipster Paras Guglani has revealed the color options, storage configuration, and pricing details of the global Reno 12 series smartphones. As per a tweet shared on X by Guglani, the Oppo Reno 12 5G global model will come in Black Brown and Astro Silver, while the Reno 12 Pro 5G will be available in Nebula Silver and Nebula Black colors. The Reno 12 will be available with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, whereas the Pro model will come with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage.

Coming to the pricing, the tweet claims that the Reno 12 5G will cost €457.83 in the Eurozone, while the Reno 12 Pro 5G will cost €549.40.

Taking a look at the reports so far, the global Reno 12 series smartphones are rumored to feature the new Dimensity 7300 SoC, which is the successor of the Dimensity 7050 chipset. It provides a 20% bump in performance with around 20% reduced power consumption.

As for the camera specifications, we are skeptical about the leaked details. The report claims that the Reno 12 Pro will feature a 50 MP LYT-600 primary camera, while the Reno 12 5G global model will come with a 50 MP + 8 MP + 2 MP camera setup which will not include a telephoto camera. Considering that the Reno 11 5G global model includes a 32 MP telephoto camera, it is highly unlikely that the brand will release its successor with inferior camera hardware.

Leaker Chun, who recently revealed details of the Reno 12F’s 4G and 5G versions, has also leaked information about the chipset and cameras that will be available on the global versions of the Reno 12 and 12 Pro smartphones.

Before delving into the leaked details about the global Reno 12 and 12 Pro, let’s take a look at the chipset and cameras of their Chinese versions. The Dimensity 8250 and Dimensity 9200+ Star Speed Edition chipsets, respectively, power the Reno 12 and 12 Pro available in China.

The Chinese Reno 12 has an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel (Sony LYT-600) + 8-megapixel (IMX355 ultrawide) + 50-megapixel (Samsung JN5, 2x telephoto) triple camera unit. On the other hand, the Reno 12 Pro has an OIS-assisted 50-megapixel (Sony IMX890, OIS) + 8-megapixel (Sony IMX355, ultrawide) + 50-megapixel (Samsung JN5, 2x telephoto) triple camera system.

According to the leaker, the Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro heading to global markets will have the Dimensity 7300 Energy chipset onboard. Final thoughts

The Reno 12 can be seen in Light Pink and Dark Gray/Black colors while the Reno 12 Pro can be seen with Purple and Black variants. Meanwhile, Silver and Purple variants of the two devices feature wave-like patterns on the rear. Oppo will unveil the Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro in China on 23rd May 2024. Indonesia’s SDPPI certification platform has certified an upcoming Oppo device with model number CPH2629. The listing confirms that the device will be called the Oppo Reno 12 Pro 5G when it debuts in the Indonesian market.

India’s BIS, Singapore’s IMDA, and Europe’s EEC have also approved the same device. The latter reveals that it will support NFC, among other connectivity features.

Additionally, the Oppo Reno 12 Pro 5G has been approved by TUV Rheinland, revealing its battery size and charging speed. As per the certification, the device will pack a 4,880mAh (rated value) battery and support 80W fast charging. The typical size of the Reno 12 Pro’s battery could be 5,000mAh.

The Reno 12 Pro is also listed in Camera FV-5’s database. It reveals that the device has a 50-megapixel front camera with an f/2.0 aperture, as well as a 50-megapixel main camera on the back. At present, there is no clarity on whether the same Reno 12 Pro, which is planned for the Chinese market, will be released globally.

A couple of smartphone brands are expected to launch new phones this month in the Chinese market. A Chinese tech blogger has claimed that the Reno 12 series and Honor 200 lineup will be unveiled by the end of this month.

Reno 12 series, Honor 200 lineup launch timeframe (rumored)

Last year, on Nov. 23, both the Oppo Reno 11 series and the Honor 100 lineup made their debut simultaneously in China. This month, it is anticipated that their successor editions will also be introduced in close proximity to each other.

As can be seen in the above screengrab, the Reno 12 lineup will debut first, and the Honor 200 series in less than a week soon after. Unfortunately, the leaker did not mention the exact launch dates for these phones. 

Reports suggest that the Dimensity 8200 or 8300 chipset will power the Reno 12, while the more potent Dimensity 9200 Plus chipset may power the Reno 12 Pro. On the other hand, the Honor 200 will have the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip onboard, whereas its Pro version may feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The 3C certifications of both Honor phones have revealed that they may support 100W fast charging. However, the Reno 12 models haven’t yet been spotted on Chinese certification platforms. In November 2023, Oppo unveiled the Reno 11 series in China. In February, the first leaks of the Reno 12 series emerged, which revealed many details about the Reno 12 and the Reno 12 Pro. Here is a look at what to expect from the next-generation Reno smartphones.

Oppo Reno 12 series design

The Reno 12 and 12 Pro are expected to feature an OLED display with quad-curved micro-curvature on the front. Yet again, the new Reno phones are said to sport a thin and lightweight design. Shown above is a mock render of the rear panel of the Reno 12 duo, which offers a straightforward design featuring a vertically positioned triple camera system.

The two phones are likely to have similar specifications. However, they are expected to differ in departments like chipset, RAM, and storage.

Oppo Reno 12 specifications (rumored)

According to reports, the Reno 12 will have a 6.7-inch OLED display that offers a 1.5K resolution. On the front, it will have a 50-megapixel camera, and its rear panel may feature a 50-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom.

Oppo Pad 3, Enco R3, Enco X3 incoming

Oppo is reportedly developing additional products, including the Oppo Pad 3 and the Enco R3. The Pad 3 is expected to debut as the world’s first tablet powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. 

On the other hand, the Enco R3 is expected to sport a semi-in-ear design. Oppo is also said to be working on the Enco X3 premium TWS earbuds. At present, the rumor mill is yet to leak details of the Enco X3.

It is unclear whether these devices will be launched alongside the Reno 12 series. These devices may likely launch gradually between May and June.

There is no information about the Oppo Pad 3 or Enco R3. On the other hand, the Reno 12 and 12 Pro are likely to cost around $499 and $799, respectively, in the Chinese market. There is a possibility that a slightly modified Reno 12 series may hit the global market in July. It is speculated that the Oppo Pad 3 will be rebranded as the OnePlus Pad 2 in the global market.

These devices are expected to break cover as the Vivo X100s and Vivo X100s Pro.

DCS said that there is one more phone with a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This phone appears to be the Vivo X100 Ultra, which is expected to debut alongside the X100s and X100s Pro. Some reports have claimed that the device may carry the Vivo X100s Ultra branding instead of the X100 Ultra.

Oppo Reno 12 series

The fifth phone in the leak features an OLED panel with a micro-curved design. The screen offers a 1.5K resolution and the device is powered by the Dimensity 9200. Rumors suggest that the device could be the Reno 12 Pro. There is a possibility that the standard Reno 12 featuring the Dimensity 8200 chip may also debut alongside the Pro model.

Meizu 21 Note

In November 2023, Oppo unveiled the Reno 11 series of smartphones in China. Recent reports revealed that the brand is currently working on the Reno 12 series of smartphones for the Chinese market. In addition to the Reno 12 lineup, the brand is reportedly developing the Oppo Pad 3 tablet and the Enco X3 TWS earbuds. In the latest leak, tipster Digital Chat Station has mentioned the launch timeframes of these devices.

DCS revealed that new products such as the Oppp Reno 12 / 12 Pro, Pad 3, and Enco X3 are already in the pipeline, with material production trials underway. Current factory schedules suggest a gradual release of these products from late May to early June. The tipster did not reveal anything else about these devices.

Recent reports have claimed that the Reno 12 duo will feature an OLED panel with micro curvature on all four sides. It will offer a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Today, tipster Digital Chat Station released a new Weibo post to leak almost everything about the Reno 12.

DCS reports that the engineering prototype of the Oppo Reno 12 features the Dimensity 8200 chipset. The Reno 11, which debuted in November 2023, also packs the same D8200 chip.

The leak further reveals that the Reno 12’s engineering prototype has 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of internal storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 80W rapid charging support. The device will likely run on the ColorOS 14-based Android 14.

The Reno 12’s latest leak has no information about its front camera. However, it states that the rear camera setup will be headlined by a 50-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture. It could feature a custom-made Sony lens as the primary snapper, according to a previous report. The leaked details suggest that the Reno 12 may be equipped with a MediaTek processor called MTK 24M, though the exact processor name is unknown. It is expected to come with 12GB of RAM and storage options reaching up to 256GB.

On the other hand, the Reno 12 Pro is expected to come with a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 (MTK DX-2) processor, accompanied by 12GB of RAM and 256GB and 512GB of storage.
