Oppo finally unveiled the Reno 13 series in China earlier this week. These are the brand’s latest mid range models and bring various improvements over its predecessors. So now, here’s a list of every upgrade that the base Reno 13 brings over the Reno 12.

Oppo Reno 13: New Compact Display

Back in May 2024, the Oppo Reno 12 was announced in China with a tall 6.7-inch OLED display with a 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 1200 nits of peak brightness, and 2160Hz PWM dimming. This was a decent display for its price point, but Oppo has made some notable changes to Reno’s latest vanilla model.

The Chinese company has made the Reno 13 more compact than its predecessor. So the Reno 13 sports a slightly smaller 6.50-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a higher 3840Hz PWM dimming. In other words, this device is not only easier to carry around and use with one hand, but it also strains users’ eyes even less.

Newer Chip

Just like the screen, the chipsets are also getting a refresh. The Reno 12 arrives with the MediaTek Dimensity 8250 SoC, which is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. On the other hand, the Reno 13 is equipped with the Dimensity 8350 chip, which runs on a higher 3.35GHz clock speed. It also has a custom X1 network acceleration chip for improved connectivity. Although, the storage configurations remain the same between the two generations.

Bigger Battery

Oppo has bumped the battery capacity of both the Reno 13 and Reno 13 Pro. The former is now powered by a massive 5,600mAh battery pack, which supports 80W wired fast charging. Meanwhile, the older Reno 13 has a respectable 5,000mAh battery that also supports 80W wired fast charging. But the higher capacity and newer chip should offer better battery life.

Slimmer & Premium Design

Oppo’s Reno series has always aimed at offering decent overall performance with an attractive design on a budget. The Reno 12 measured a slim 7.6mm in thickness and weighed just 177 grams. However, the Reno 13 is now thinner than before, measuring just 7.2mm, despite its larger battery pack. It does become marginally heavier at 181 grams, but thanks to the new glass back and aluminum alloy frame on the sides. This makes it feel a lot more premium than its predecessor.

But is it an upgrade?

Thankfully, the pricing between the two models has remained unchanged. It still has a 2,699 Yuan price tag (roughly 272 US Dollars) for the base model despite its various improvements. However, there was corners cut to achieve the identical pricing. The Reno 13 skips the telephoto shooter unlike the Reno 12. So if this sensor is something you often use, Reno 12 might be a better deal. But in nearly every other regard, the Reno 13 offers decent upgrades. I won’t call it a true sequel but it is slightly more than a simple refresh.

But this is a competitive segment which Chinese brand often dominate. So how does the Edge 50 stack up against another popular alternative, the Oppo Reno 12? Here’s a quick comparison.

Design & Display

Oppo announced the Reno 12 with an All-Round Armour protection for resistance against drops and impacts. It also employs an alloy framework for a sturdy build and an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance. However, the Chinese company uses a plastic frame and plastic back panel. The front sports a tall 6.7-inch OLED FHD+ curved AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1200 nits of peak brightness, HDR10+ support, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. Under the hood, Motorola equips the Edge 50 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, which is paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. For software, it runs on the Android 14 OS based Hello UI as well as Google AI for features like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Magic Editor. In comparison, the Oppo Reno 12 features the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Energy processor that is coupled with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. For photography, the Edge 50 features a 50MP primary camera with Sony’s Lytia 700C sensor, a 10MP 3x telephoto shooter, and a 13MP ultra-wide lens. On the front, there is a 13MP camera for selfies and video calls. The Reno 12 also comes with a triple-lens rear setup with a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor, and a 50MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom. For selfies, the device houses a 32MP camera.

Pricing and Verdict

Oppo launched the Reno 12 with a 32,999 INR price tag for the sole 8GB + 256GB configuration. This makes it noticeably more expensive than the Motorola Edge 50, which costs 27,999 INR for the same storage option. These two models are quite comparable in terms of specs and performance. But the design and pricing are what make the Motorola Edge 50 a great choice for those who don’t wish to spend more than 30,000 INR.

Oppo Reno 12 vs Realme GT 6T: What’s with all the AI?

We recently reviewed the Oppo Reno 12 and its new generative AI and features were definitely a highlight. The device brings GenAI features like AI Eraser 2.0, which is handy in removing unwanted objects in your photos. AI Clear Face and AI Best Face are pretty useful, improving facial details and more. Other notable AI features include AI Recording Summary, AI LinkBoost, and more. All of these help in productivity and also aid in daily use.

The use of AI on the Realme GT 6T is more modest. It focuses more on functionality for photography. So you get access to AI Night Vision and AI Smart Removal. Artificial Intelligence is also employed in frame stabilization to improve the users’ gaming experience. But the Reno 12 easily outshines in this regard.

Snapdragon vs Dimensity

The use of AI was great for various features on the Reno 12, but Realme GT 6T easily takes the lead in raw performance. The latter is the first smartphone in India to feature the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip, which achieved a score of over 1.5 million on AnTuTu.

On the other hand, Oppo equipped the Reno 12 with a Dimensity 7300 Energy chipset. This is still a capable chip but benchmark scores show a clear gap in performance between the two processors. The gap isn’t large enough to affect daily use or in most scenarios. But intensive tasks like gaming would have a noticeable difference.

Realme with the bigger battery & faster charging

Oppo’s new Reno 12 is powered by a respectable 5,000mAh battery pack that supports 80W wired fast charging. This is a great combo, although, the Realme GT 6T has an edge once again. The GT 6T packs a larger 5,500mAh cell that supports 120W wired fast charging. So you get a bigger battery, which can also be charged quicker.

Realme GT 6T’s display is 5 times brighter

Once again, the Realme GT 6T has another trick up its sleeve. It sports a tall 6.78-inch LTPO AMOELD display that has a Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, 1000 nits of typical brightmess and a peak brightness of 6,000 nits. This is 10 times higher than the Oppo Reno 12’s maximum configurable brightness (600 nits) and 5 times higher than its peak brightness of 1200 nits.

The screen on the Reno 12 is also a shorter 6.7-inch OLED panel but it also offers a 120Hz refresh rate and a FHD+ resolution. This means that you miss out on the variable refresh rate from 1-120Hz on the GT 6T along with a taller and a brighter display.

Pricing

Out of the two phones, the Realme GT 6T is more affordable with a starting price tag of 30,999 INR for its base 8GB + 128GB option. Oppo’s Reno 12 has a slightly higher 32,999 INR price tag for its starting model, but offers 8GB RAM and higher 256GB storage. This price tag is identical to the Realme GT 6T’s 8GB + 256GB option. You also get more experience options like the 12GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB variants.

Between the two phones, there isn’t a clear distinction as to which is better. Oppo has a some useful tricks with AI, but Realme has its own advantages with the hardware. So depending on how you use your phone you can make your own decision. A gamer would likely require the extra horsepower on the Reno 12, but the software experience has an edge in the Reno 12.

After the recent launch of the Oppo Reno 12 series in the Chinese market, the brand has now confirmed that the series will also be launching globally in the coming weeks. While specifications of the global model of these devices have not been confirmed, reports have claimed that the Reno 12 5G and the Reno 12 Pro 5G will both feature the recently announced Dimensity 7300 SoC.

In addition to that, tipster Paras Guglani has revealed the color options, storage configuration, and pricing details of the global Reno 12 series smartphones. As per a tweet shared on X by Guglani, the Oppo Reno 12 5G global model will come in Black Brown and Astro Silver, while the Reno 12 Pro 5G will be available in Nebula Silver and Nebula Black colors. The Reno 12 will be available with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, whereas the Pro model will come with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage.

Coming to the pricing, the tweet claims that the Reno 12 5G will cost €457.83 in the Eurozone, while the Reno 12 Pro 5G will cost €549.40.

Taking a look at the reports so far, the global Reno 12 series smartphones are rumored to feature the new Dimensity 7300 SoC, which is the successor of the Dimensity 7050 chipset. It provides a 20% bump in performance with around 20% reduced power consumption.

The report claims that the Reno 12 Pro will feature a 50 MP LYT-600 primary camera, while the Reno 12 5G global model will come with a 50 MP + 8 MP + 2 MP camera setup which will not include a telephoto camera. Considering that the Reno 11 5G global model includes a 32 MP telephoto camera, it is highly unlikely that the brand will release its successor with inferior camera hardware.

However, there is a high possibility that global variants will have different specs as compared to their Chinese counterparts. Leaker Chun, who recently revealed details of the Reno 12F’s 4G and 5G versions, has also leaked information about the chipset and cameras that will be available on the global versions of the Reno 12 and 12 Pro smartphones.

Chinese Reno 12, Reno 12 Pro chipset, camera details

Before delving into the leaked details about the global Reno 12 and 12 Pro, let’s take a look at the chipset and cameras of their Chinese versions. The Dimensity 8250 and Dimensity 9200+ Star Speed Edition chipsets, respectively, power the Reno 12 and 12 Pro available in China.

The Chinese Reno 12 has an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel (Sony LYT-600) + 8-megapixel (IMX355 ultrawide) + 50-megapixel (Samsung JN5, 2x telephoto) triple camera unit. On the other hand, the Reno 12 Pro has an OIS-assisted 50-megapixel (Sony IMX890, OIS) + 8-megapixel (Sony IMX355, ultrawide) + 50-megapixel (Samsung JN5, 2x telephoto) triple camera system.

Global Reno 12, Reno 12 Pro chipset, camera leak

According to the leaker, the Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro heading to global markets will have the Dimensity 7300 Energy chipset onboard. The Reno 12’s global version will have a 50-megapixel + 8-megapixel, + 2-megapixel triple camera setup on the back. It implies that there will be no telephoto camera. On the other hand, the leak reveals that the global Reno 12 Pro will feature a 50-megapixel LYT-600 primary camera, essentially a rebranded Sony IMX882 sensor.

Final thoughts

The global Reno 11 and 11 Pro, debuted earlier this year, have the Dimensity 7050 and Dimensity 8200 chipsets, respectively. While the Reno 12 may feature the newer Dimensity 7300 chip, it is unclear whether the brand may settle for this chipset instead of the D8200 or something better.

Also, the global Reno 11’s camera setup features a 32-megapixel telephoto camera. However, the new leak now suggests that the successor model does not have a telephoto camera, a claim that sounds absurd. Therefore, we advise readers to approach the leak cautiously, as certain details don’t seem to be accurate.

Reno 12 series supports sharing Live Photos

Like the predecessor models, the Reno 12 series promises an impressive photography experience. Live Photos capture and display motion just before and after the photo is taken. Previously, while Android phones could take Live Photos, they couldn’t post them on social media. When shared on social platforms, these images appeared as still images.

The Reno12 series not only supports sharing Live Photos but also allows users to beautify and modify them. This includes adjusting colors, adding filters, and incorporating text and stickers, offering a variety of customization options.

The Reno 12 and 12 Pro are expected to launch soon in the global market. However, there is a possibility that the global variants may pack modified specifications.

Talking about the base model first, it sports a tall 6.7-inch curved OLED display with a 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate, up to 1200 nits of peak brightness, and 2160Hz PWM dimming with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Under the hood, the Reno 12 is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 8250 Star Speed Edition SoC, which is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. A large 5,000mAh battery pack powers this device, which supports 80W wired fast charging.

For optics, you get a triple camera setup on the rear that consists of a 50-megapixel primary camera with OIS (Sony LYT-600), an 8-megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and a 50-megapixel telephoto shooter with a 2x optical zoom. For selfies and video calls, you get a 50-megapixel shooter on the front. A massive 5,000mAh battery pack powers the Reno 12 Pro, which supports 80W wired fast charging as well.

The rear features a triple camera setup with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 sensor with OIS, an 8-megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and a 50-megapixel telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom. The 50-megapixel sensor makes a return for the selfie shooter. Other notable features include Bluetooth 5.4, IP65 water and dust resistance, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 6, infrared sensor, in-display fingerprint scanner, and Android 14 OS based ColorOS 14 custom skin out of the box.

Oppo is gearing up to debut its Reno 12 series of smartphones in its home market of China soon. Official renders of the upcoming mid range devices were shared on X (formerly Twitter) by known tipster Evan Blass. The Chinese brand’s Reno 12 series just recently had its design and colors teased officially. However, only the Silver option of the Reno 12 and the Purple variant of the Reno 12 Pro were shared by Oppo. Now, the tipster has revealed more color options for both the base and Pro models.

The Reno 12 can be seen in Light Pink and Dark Gray/Black colors while the Reno 12 Pro can be seen with Purple and Black variants. Meanwhile, Silver and Purple variants of the two devices feature wave-like patterns on the rear. Oppo will unveil the Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro in China on 23rd May 2024. To recall, both models are expected to spot a 6.7-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the base model may feature the Dimensity 8250 So, while the Pro variant packs a Dimensity 9200+ chipset.

The Reno 12 series is expected to arrive in similar storage configurations, namely 12GB + 512GB, 16GB + 256GB, and 16GB RAM + 512GB. Oppo is gearing up to unveil the next gen smartphones from its popular Reno series. The new Reno 12 lineup is expected to launch soon, but ahead of any official announcement, a fresh leak has hinted that the new phones will also debut with a brand-new chip from MediaTek.

Oppo Reno 12 with Dimensity 8250

The MediaTek Dimensity Developer Conference (MDDC) was just held and the company unveiled the new Dimensity 9300+ SoC. Although, it appears that a new Dimensity 8000 series chipset is also in the works and will debut with the Reno 12 series. According to known tipster Digital Chat Station, the Reno 12 may feature a brand-new Dimensity 8250 chip, which will reportedly feature MediaTek’s “Star Speed Engine”.

This is usually exclusive to high end Dimensity 9000 series and even the Dimensity 8300 processors. Simply put, the Star Speed Engine allows for an enhanced gaming performance with stable frames over long periods and minimal thermal throttling. So the Reno 12 could also deliver a flagship level mobile gaming experience. The tipster stated that the Dimensity 8250 has a 3.1GHz Cortex-A78 core, three 3.0GHz Cortex-A78 cores, and four 2.0GHz Cortex-A55 cores configuration.

These will be paired with Mali-G610 GPU. DCS further added that the Reno 12 Pro may come with the Dimensity 9200+, which could be marketed as the Dimensity 9200+ Star Speed Edition. Based on what we know so far, the Reno 12 Pro is expected to launch with either the Diemsnity 9200+ SoC. The Oppo Reno 12 series is rumored to launch by the end of this month. A couple of smartphone brands are expected to launch new phones this month in the Chinese market. Vivo has just confirmed that it will hold a launch event on May 13 to unveil the Vivo X100 Ultra, X100s, and X100s Pro. The Realme GT Neo 6, Meizu 21 Note, Oppo Reno 12 series, and Honor 200 lineup are also said to launch this month in China. A Chinese tech blogger has claimed that the Reno 12 series and Honor 200 lineup will be unveiled by the end of this month.

Reno 12 series, Honor 200 lineup launch timeframe (rumored)

Last year, on Nov. 23, both the Oppo Reno 11 series and the Honor 100 lineup made their debut simultaneously in China. This month, it is anticipated that their successor editions will also be introduced in close proximity to each other.

As can be seen in the above screengrab, the Reno 12 lineup will debut first, and the Honor 200 series in less than a week soon after. Unfortunately, the leaker did not mention the exact launch dates for these phones. 

Reports suggest that the Dimensity 8200 or 8300 chipset will power the Reno 12, while the more potent Dimensity 9200 Plus chipset may power the Reno 12 Pro. On the other hand, the Honor 200 will have the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip onboard, whereas its Pro version may feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The 3C certifications of both Honor phones have revealed that they may support 100W fast charging. However, the Reno 12 models haven’t yet been spotted on Chinese certification platforms. Nevertheless, the rumor mill claimed that other devices, such as the Oppo Pad 3, Enco R3, and Enco X3, may also debut along with the next-generation Reno models.

In November 2023, Oppo unveiled the Reno 11 series in China. In February, the first leaks of the Reno 12 series emerged, which revealed many details about the Reno 12 and the Reno 12 Pro. Here is a look at what to expect from the next-generation Reno smartphones.

Oppo Reno 12 series design

The Reno 12 and 12 Pro are expected to feature an OLED display with quad-curved micro-curvature on the front. Yet again, the new Reno phones are said to sport a thin and lightweight design. Shown above is a mock render of the rear panel of the Reno 12 duo, which offers a straightforward design featuring a vertically positioned triple camera system.

The two phones are likely to have similar specifications. However, they are expected to differ in departments like chipset, RAM, and storage.

Oppo Reno 12 specifications (rumored)

According to reports, the Reno 12 will have a 6.7-inch OLED display that offers a 1.5K resolution. On the front, it will have a 50-megapixel camera, and its rear panel may feature a 50-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom.

The Reno 12 is likely to house a 5,000mAh battery with 80W fast charging. Under the hood, it may feature the Dimensity 8200 or Dimensity 8300 chipsets. The highest variant of the phone may offer 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. It will come with other features, such as an IR blaster, an in-screen fingerprint scanner, an IP65-rated chassis, and ColorOS 14-based Android 14.

Oppo Reno 12 Pro specifications (rumored)

The Oppo Reno 12 Pro may come equipped with the Dimensity 9200 or 9200+ chipset. It may offer up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of storage. The device’s front camera may support autofocus. The rest of its specifications could be identical to the Reno 12. 

Oppo Pad 3, Enco R3, Enco X3 incoming

Oppo is reportedly developing additional products, including the Oppo Pad 3 and the Enco R3. The Pad 3 is expected to debut as the world’s first tablet powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. 

On the other hand, the Enco R3 is expected to sport a semi-in-ear design. It is expected to come with features, such as spatial sound effects, noise cancellation for calls, Hi-Fi audio, and dual device connection. Oppo is also said to be working on the Enco X3 premium TWS earbuds. At present, the rumor mill is yet to leak details of the Enco X3.

It is unclear whether these devices will be launched alongside the Reno 12 series. These devices may likely launch gradually between May and June.

There is no information about the Oppo Pad 3 or Enco R3. On the other hand, the Reno 12 and 12 Pro are likely to cost around $499 and $799, respectively, in the Chinese market. There is a possibility that a slightly modified Reno 12 series may hit the global market in July. It is speculated that the Oppo Pad 3 will be rebranded as the OnePlus Pad 2 in the global market.

Realme GT Neo 6

The first phone that the leaker is talking about has the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and supports 120W fast charging. This device seems to be the upcoming Realme GT Neo 6. The leaker recently claimed that it will be the fastest charging phone with the SD8sG3 chip onboard.

Vivo X100s series

MediaTek will unveil the Dimensity 9300 Plus chip on May 7 in China. In the leak, the tipster has hinted at the arrival of two phones featuring the D9300+ chip. Both phones are equipped with a flat display that offers a 1.5K resolution, a periscope telephoto camera, and supports 100W fast charging. These devices are expected to break cover as the Vivo X100s and Vivo X100s Pro.

DCS said that there is one more phone with a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This phone appears to be the Vivo X100 Ultra, which is expected to debut alongside the X100s and X100s Pro. Some reports have claimed that the device may carry the Vivo X100s Ultra branding instead of the X100 Ultra.

Oppo Reno 12 series

The fifth phone in the leak features an OLED panel with a micro-curved design. The screen offers a 1.5K resolution and the device is powered by the Dimensity 9200. Rumors suggest that the device could be the Reno 12 Pro. There is a possibility that the standard Reno 12 featuring the Dimensity 8200 chip may also debut alongside the Pro model.

Meizu 21 Note

Lastly, the leaker has mentioned a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phone. It can be said based on recent leaks that he could hinting at the arrival of the Meizu 21 Note.

As per reports, the Honor 200 and 200 Pro are also expected to launch this month in China. These devices are expected to feature the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and 8 Gen 3 chipsets, respectively. As per other reports, the Moto X50 Ultra will also debut this month in China.

The Reno 12 is expected to house a 50-megapixel (main) + 8-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 50-megapixel (2x telephoto) triple camera system. The Reno 12 Pro may feature a similar triple camera unit. Both phones are expected to have an autofocus-enabled 50-megapixel front camera.

The Oppo Pad 3 is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Some reports have claimed that it will be rebranded as the OnePlus Pad 2 in the global market. As far as the Enco X3 is concerned, the rumor mill is yet to shed any details about the TWS earbuds.

But the tipster spilled the beans on other smartphone series launches as well. According to DCS, along with Reno 12, the Vivo S19 series, Huawei Nova 13 series, and Honor 200 series smartphones will also launch in June. 

All of the series from different brands are mid-range tier smartphones. So there seems to be intense competition. Details regarding the Vivo S19 and Huawei Nova 13 remain scarce, so we will need further leaks or official announcements for clarification.

The Honor 200 Lite, however, has already been spotted on the TDRA certification website, hinting at an imminent launch. While specifications are unknown, the “Lite” moniker suggests a budget-friendly entry within the Honor 200 series.

Shifting focus to the Oppo Reno 12 series, previous leaks suggest the phones will boast AI-powered features and a periscope telephoto camera. The top model could potentially sport the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or even the flagship 8 Gen 3 chipset.

Just a month after the global launch of the Reno 11 series, rumors about Oppo‘s next Reno smartphones, the Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro are already swirling online. Based on an alleged internal document, folks over at MSPowerUser have revealed some specs of the upcoming devices.

The leaked details suggest that the Reno 12 may be equipped with a MediaTek processor called MTK 24M, though the exact processor name is unknown. It is expected to come with 12GB of RAM and storage options reaching up to 256GB.

On the other hand, the Reno 12 Pro is expected to come with a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 (MTK DX-2) processor, accompanied by 12GB of RAM and 256GB and 512GB of storage.

Likewise, both phones are rumored to sport 6.7-inch FHD OLED displays with a 120Hz refresh rate, featuring curved edges on all sides.

As for the camera specifications, the Oppo Reno 12 series is said to feature a 50MP main sensor with OIS, along with an 8MP and a 50MP lens offering 2x optical zoom. As per the tipster, the Reno 12 series will feature a Snapdragon 8 series sub-flagship platform. Currently, the flagship chin in Qualcomm’s camp is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. So, it is highly likely that the Reno 12 series debuts with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC onboard.

Additionally, the tipster hints at an enhanced periscope camera for the Reno 12 series.
