While the Samsung Galaxy S22 series and the Apple iPhone 13 lineup are premium grade smartphones that start from a similar price point, it seems that the Apple offerings depreciate much slower than its Android rival.

As per a new survey from SellCell, the South Korean tech giant’s current gen flagships depreciates three times faster than the iPhone 13 series. The research report compared the iPhone 13 mini that costs 699 US Dollars, the Galaxy S22 that has a price tag of 799 US Dollars, and the 599 US Dollars Pixel 6 as well. Within just two months of the launch, it was found that the iPhone 13 retained the best value if one decides to resell it.

Although, this isn’t particularly surprising since Apple models have typically always retained better value than its Android counterparts. The report further added that the Galaxy S22 had the worst retaining value, with its resale value dropping to 46.8 percent of its original in just two months after its launch. On the other hand, the Pixel 6 lineup only lost around 41.5 percent of its original value within the same time period. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 series only saw a relatively low fall of 16.4 percent in terms of value in the first two months.

Interestingly, the Pixel 6 regained some of its lost value after the first month, which is usually seen in iPhones alone. Breaking the numbers down, the Galaxy S22+ lost its value the fastest, while the Pixel 6 Pro was the worst performer in Google’s case. For Apple, the iPhone 13 mini lost the most value, while its iPhone 13 Pro Max model only lost around 3.8 percent of its original value even after 2 months of launch. So its clear, that an iPhone is a much better investment overall.

As is the case with most things one purchases, a smartphone loses its value over time. This depreciation is unavoidable but the rate at which it occurs is different for different brands, with Apple devices retaining the best value over any of its competition.

A website called BankMyCell (Via PhoneArena) recently published a new report, which tracked the erosion value of various devices. Over the course of last year, the company tracked the buyback value of 310 popular smartphones on an hourly basis. Through this, it was found that Android smartphones across the board lost their value at double the rate of their iOS counterparts. In other words, Apple iPhones retained their value better over the course of ownership within the first two years.

As per the report, Android smartphones worth over 700 US Dollars usually see a depreciation rate double that of iPhones, with the depreciation starting as soon as one unwraps the device. Over the first year, the depreciation of an iPhone was around 16.7 percent, rising to 35.47 percent by the end of the second year. In comparison, an Android smartphone’s value decline by 33.62 percent in the first year, and down by 61.5 percent by the end of the second year.

While one would assume that the gap shortens overtime, tracking till the fourth year revealed that this is not the case as iPhone’s value only drops by 66.43 percent in comparison to Android devices’ 81.11 percent over the same period. The report even offered examples like the case of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra having a buyback value which was 64.71 percent of the original price while the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max lost only 32.22 percent of its original retail value after 9 months.

So in terms of performance, it is very similar in technical prowess with the latest Snapdragon 865 SoC. This flagship chip from 2019 was used in various Android flagships from brands including, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Realme, OnePlus, Nubia, Asus, Meizu, Black Shark, iQOO, Nubia and more.

The list released by the second hand smartphone dealer arrives in the form of an image that reveals the highest resale value of certain handsets. The company calculated the value by dividing the market price of a smartphone 6 months after its launch by its original selling price at the initial launch. Then, it multiplies it by 100 to get a percentage.

Through this, we can observe that the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G ranked first since it had a resale value of 76.10 percent. In other words, despite 6 months have passed, the smartphone saw lower depreciation of its market price. On the second spot, the Black Shark 2 Pro comes in with 72.06 percent while OnePlus 7T arrives third with 70.80 percent.

Other notable models include Meizu 16S Pro (70.17%), Asus ROG Gaming Phone 2 (68.68%), Redmi K20 Pro (66.33%), OnePlus 7T Pro (66.14%), Nubia Red Magic 3S (62.65%), iQOO Pro 5G (61.96%) and more. This list covers all smartphones that were released from Jan 1, 2019, to June 30, 2019. The resale ratio is calculated by dividing the best resale value for a model by its official selling price of a new model.
