Smartphone Makers Are Now Ditching USB Cables Too

After charging bricks were quietly phased out in the name of “sustainability,” new reports suggest that USB cables might be the next casualty. One user on the Linus Tech Tips subreddit, who recently purchased the Sony Xperia 10 VII, got a retail box that was devoid of the charging brick and charging cable. Looking at the picture shared by @Brick_Fish, the Xperia 10 VII can be seen with just the basic documentation.

This could be an isolated incident or a hint towards a bleak possibility. Keep in mind that Sony isn’t a major player in the smartphone market, only selling its devices in select regions. On the other hand, this has the potential of becoming a new trend in the industry with over smartphone makers making a similar move in a few years. If this does end up happening, brands would likely use the “sustainability” argument once again.

Apple is a great example of this, as it was the first to ditch the charging brick, and even recently removed the USB cables from its AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3. While this would help avoid more electronic garbage making their way to the landfills, customers might opt for cheaper alternatives that won’t last as long, leading to more waste over a longer period.

Back in November 2023, the design of the Google Pixel 8a was first revealed in leaked images. Now, the device has been spotted again. But this time, the retail box of the Pixel 8a was leaked, which has revealed key details regarding the upcoming smartphone.

The images of the retail box were shared on a private Vietnamese Facebook group (Via MySmartPrice). Looking at the official packaging, we can see that the Pixel 8a has a design that is similar to the leaked renders we covered earlier. The smartphone features rounded corners and a dual camera setup on the rear. It retains the visor like camera module that also houses an LED flash module. The Pixel 8a can be seen in the black color model.

Meanwhile, a center aligned punch hole selfie camera is housed in the front. The volume rockers and power buttons are situated on the right side of the device. Notably, Google Pixel 8a’s G6GPR model number was also revealed. The retail box has also confirmed that the handset will support 27W wired fast charging. This leak shares the dimensions of the device as well, which is 152.1 x 72.6 x 8.9mm.

To recall, the Pixel 8a is an upcoming mid range model that will likely launch ahead of the flagship Pixel 9 series. It is believed to be equipped with an underclocked version of the Tensor G3 chipset. In a GeekBench sighting, the smartphone has scored 1218 points in the single core test and 3175 points in the multi core tests. The OnePlus 12 is the next flagship grade smartphone from the company, which is expected to launch soon. The device is a highly anticipated device with various rumors and leaks going around. But now, the retail box of the handset was leaked ahead of its official release.

The leak arrives from a tipster who shared an image on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website). In the online post, the retail box of the OnePlus 12 can be seen in full view. Looking at this image, we can see that the packaging box retains the iconic red color hue. A large “12” can also be seen, which makes it appear quite similar to the retail box of the OnePlus 11.

For those unaware, the predecessor also featured a similar box but with the “11” branding. It is worth noting that this is still just an unconfirmed leak so take this picture with a pinch of salt for now. Just recently, the three color options of OnePlus 12 were revealed, with a special variant possibly featuring a wooden texture on the back.

The premium handset is rumored to launch across the globe in January 2024, with the 12R model possibly tagging along. As of right now, pre-orders for the device are already live via JD.com in China with its release date in the region set for 4th December 2023. The Google Pixel 8 series launch is just around the corner. But just prior to the highly anticipated announcement, the company’s base Pixel 8 model’s Hazel color option was spotted in a leaked image of the retail packaging box.

The retail box of the upcoming Google Pixel 8 was spotted on a YouTube Shorts video (Via TechOutlook). Looking at the leaked image, the retail box confirms the Hazel color option. The packaging also offers us a look at the device from the front, back, and side. The long visor-like rear camera module with the dual camera setup is in clear view, while the front houses a center-aligned punch hole cutout for the selfie camera.

The Pixel 8 retail box is for the Hazel color option, which features 128GB of storage. The official parameters also reveal that the upcoming smartphone will sport a 6.2-inch display (120Hz OLED panel), support 5G sub-6 connectivity, and carry the G9BQD model number. The retail box will come with a charging cable and a Quick Switch adapter as well. Notably, this leak also arrived after we reported on the Pixel 8 Pro unboxing images being leaked.

Based on what we know so far, the Pixel 8 will be equipped with the Tenso G3 SoC under the hood. The rear packs a 50-megapixel dual camera setup, while the front may house a 10.5-megapixel selfie shooter. Other notable features include fingerprint and face scanning, IP68 water and dust resistance, and Android 14 OS out of the box. The image of the official packaging box was shared by known tipster Mukul Sharma on Twitter. The tweet also shares an image of the retail box, which hints at the Buds Air 5 Pro’s imminent launch. Realme’s upcoming hearables are confirmed to launch in at least one color variant, which is dubbed Astral Black, and carries the model number RMA2120.

Motorola is gearing up to launch a couple of new smartphones soon. One of these models includes the new Moto Edge 30 Fusion, and a new leak has revealed some interesting details regarding this upcoming device.

The news arrives from a PriceBaba report, who shared leaked images for the Moto Edge 30 Fusion’s official retail box. These images showcase the design of the box while also revealing some key details regarding the new smartphone like its pricing. Looking at the leaked retail box, it is made from eco friendly materials with barely any accessories on the inside. The retail box states the Edge 30 Fusion will have a price tag of 49,999 INR.

Although, it is very likely that the actual price of the smartphone will be lower than this when it officially launches in the market later this week. The retail box also states the the Edge 30 Fusion will be powered by a large 4,400mAh battery pack and will be available in at least one Cosmic Grey color option. One of the storage configurations was also confirmed through this leak, with the model featuring 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Unfortunately, this was all the information revealed on this leak. But based on what we know so far, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC and will feature a 50 megapixel primary camera, 13 megapixel ultra wide angle sensor, and a 2 megapixel depth sensor as well. Meanwhile, the front houses a 32 megapixel selfie shooter.

With the launch of the Xiaomi 12 series being just around the corner, various rumors and leaks have been surfacing online. In response to this, the company’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, released a new anti-leak parody video.

The new video was shared on his official Weibo account (a Chinese microblogging website) and even teases the retail box, in which the flagship series will be packaged and shipped in. This video is purely for entertainment purposes and is clearly not meant to be taken seriously as we can see the Xiaomi 12 series box is secured with a number of small locks. These locks are in place just to prevent the smartphone from being leaked and are not actually practical.

But it is still amusing to see the Chinese tech giant’s executive attempt to prevent these numerous leaks in the parody video. The caption of the video even states that secrecy is hard and its marketing department was forced to come up with a new idea to prevent any information from getting out. Looking at the packaging, we can observe the usual branding on the black box, with a large “12” at the front. Notably, the official had to go through a number of larger boxes to get to the official retail box.

Talking about leaks, we had recently covered one, which revealed certain specifications and even some images as well. Apparently, the base model will sport a 6.28 inch display, while the Pro variant will have a larger 6.73 inch Samsung E5 AMOLED LTPO display. This panel will feature 2K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a single punch hole selfie camera for a 32 megapixel sensor. On the rear, the device will house a triple camera setup with a 50 megapixel primary sensor, 50 megapixel telephoto shooter, and another 50 megapixel ultra wide angle lens. Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 5G chipset.

The OnePlus 9 series smartphones come with the company’s new retail box that is designed to be a bit bigger in terms of length. While the packaging looks decent, there was also an alternative packaging, as revealed by OnePlus CEO Pete Lau.

Pete Lau has shared an image on Twitter showcasing an alternative packaging of the OnePlus 9 series. However, it’s not yet clear if the company had ever considered using that or if it plans to do so going forward.

The new packaging showcased by Pete Lau doesn’t have a retail box to keep the device inside. Instead, it uses plastic and has a very minimal design, similar to what you get when buying a pendrive.

The smartphone is secured behind a transparent package on the right side while the left side of the packaging mentions the key features of the device. There is no room for a charger or additional accessories. It also has a hook at the top which can be used to hand the product for display.

Along with sharing the image of this packaging, Pete Lau has added that the company is not giving up the “stylish red box” which confirms that we won’t be getting this new packaging when buying any OnePlus smartphone.

OnePlus recently officially merged with OPPO and will now act as a sub-brand of the China-based smartphone manufacturer. The announcement wasn’t surprising given that both the companies were merging several of their operations since last year.

Earlier today (12th October 2020), the retail packaging box for the upcoming gaming console from Microsoft was leaked. The image was leaked online by Jon Scarr from Best buy in Canada, who shared the picture of the Xbox Series X packaging.

Looking at the image, the packaging doesn’t offer a lot of details apart from a large image of the console itself along with a few key features, like the 1 TB SSD storage and the ability to run guns at 4K resolutions at 120 fps. The packaging is in a square shape and also is different from its last generation console’s packaging considering the design of the console itself is quite different from the older models.

Lenovo is all set to launch its flagship smartphone — Lenovo Z6 Pro next month, i.e. April 2019. Ahead of the phone’s launch, the company has been teasing the smartphone through its features, especially the camera part.

Today, the company revealed the retail box of the Z6 Pro smartphone has said that it has been designed by the Beijing Olympic games Xiangyun torch designer. Apart from this, the company has not revealed anything.

Earlier, the company had teased the phone’s launch during MWC 2019 last month but instead of launching the smartphone, the company just revealed that the phone will make its debut soon.

Lenovo has also confirmed that the smartphone will come with a feature called “Hyper Videos” but had not shared anything related to this, except that it will be the trend of the 5G era. It recently shared a video which was shot using the upcoming Z6 Pro flagship smartphone. The video shows the phone’s outstanding capabilities in terms of shooting low-light images and video.

While the video has a watermark of “Super Night Mode” in the bottom-left corner, Lenovo VP Chang Cheng says that there’s no Super Night Mode in the app and the video is recorded normally. He also said that it took over a year for the company to develop the Hyper Video feature.

Earlier, it was said that the phone will come with support for 100 MP camera and will feature an anti-shake function as well. It is also expected to have a super wide-angle lens, and something related to improve the night photography.
