Earlier today (7th September 2020), Vivo announced its new RGBW sensor in its media conference. The new arrangement features an increased sensitivity and will ship in smartphones next year.

The new RGBW sensor features improved sensitivity while avoiding color cast problems. The increase in sensitivity measures in at 160 percent as well. Notably, this is not the first time a unique array sensor is being used, with the Huawei P30 featuring a 13 megapixel RYYB sensor back in 2019. The new sensor aims at improving the photographic experience and raises image quality.

For those unaware, traditional camera sensors use an RGGB array sensor. Although the P30 featured an RYYB sensor. In other words, they lack the green filter but are able to have more light reach the sensor. The RGBW is now Vivo’s launching a different arrangement as well, with the company offering noticeable benefits with this variant. Although, only real world tests would show results after the company launches devices with this sensor.

The new sensor also helps increase the amount of light that enters the sensor. Previously, the RGBW sensors were short lived due to a certain lack of colors in images. However, Vivo has managed to circumvent this issue through the use of its advanced algorithms to make up for and even improve colors. The Chinese tech giant expects the technology to make an appearance on smartphones by the second half of 2021.

Honor is expected to launch its next phablet dubbed as Honor X10 Max on July 2. But we know almost everything about this handset, thanks to a number of leaks in the past few days. In addition to those, the brand itself has also begun to tease some specs officially on Weibo. Earlier today, it revealed that this device will feature an RGBW panel.

Normally, displays found on smartphones use RGB pixel arrangement. But the upcoming Honor X10 Max will come with RGBW screen.

LCD panels with RGB (Red, Blue, Green) pixel arrangement produce white color by illuminating the aforementioned color pixels at their highest intensity. But some of the light is weakened due to the color filters.

On the other hand, RGBW LCD panels have a dedicated white subpixel. Thus, the overall brightness produced by these displays is better than conventional RGB screens found on most smartphones.

The brand even showcased the display brightness prowess of Honor X10 Max in a video. This particular video was shot on the day of Summer Solstice (June 21) when the sunlight hit directly on Tropic of Cancer.

The display on the Honor X10 Max will be of 7.09-inches making it the perfect choice for consuming content and playing games. It will be powered by a Mediatek Dimensity 5G chipset unlike Kirin 820 on the regular Honor X10.
