Leaked internal emails indicate that Amazon-owned Ring may be planning to expand its AI-powered camera network far beyond its current use cases, raising fresh concerns about large-scale neighborhood surveillance.

According to emails obtained by 404 Media, Ring founder Jamie Siminoff told employees that the company’s controversial “Search Party” feature was introduced “first for finding dogs,” but could eventually evolve into technology aimed at reducing crime across neighborhoods. Search Party launched in October as an on-by-default feature that connects Ring cameras within a local area and uses AI to identify lost pets, effectively creating a shared detection network across participating homes.

“This is by far the most innovative that we have launched in the history of Ring,” Siminoff wrote in an email to staff shortly after the feature’s rollout. He added that the underlying system could become a key part of Ring’s long-term mission, describing a future where the company might help “zero out crime in neighborhoods” through AI-enabled tools.

The feature drew backlash during the Super Bowl after Ring promoted the concept in an advertisement. Critics argued that technology capable of scanning for lost animals could easily be repurposed for broader surveillance, particularly given Ring’s history of partnerships with police departments across the United States.

Recent product launches appear to reinforce those concerns. Ring has introduced “Familiar Faces,” a facial recognition feature designed to identify known individuals captured on cameras, as well as “Fire Watch,” which uses AI to alert users about nearby fires. While these tools are marketed as safety features, privacy advocates warn they could contribute to an increasingly interconnected surveillance ecosystem.

Additional emails obtained by 404 Media also highlight Ring’s growing law enforcement integrations. The company launched a “Community Requests” feature in September, allowing police to request footage directly from camera owners through a partnership with public safety technology firm Axon. Siminoff described the feature internally as “foundational” to Ring’s mission of making neighborhoods safer.

In response to the reports, a Ring spokesperson said the company focuses on providing context about local events such as lost pets or fires and emphasized that footage sharing remains optional. The spokesperson also stated that Search Party does not process human biometrics or track individuals.

Despite those assurances, the leaked emails suggest Ring’s ambitions may extend well beyond pet recovery, potentially reshaping how residential surveillance technology is used in the future.

Ring has announced its most advanced lineup of security devices, introducing new 2K and 4K cameras and doorbells along with AI-powered features designed to improve safety and convenience.

The highlight is Ring Retinal 4K Vision, now available in the Wired Doorbell Pro, Spotlight Cam Pro, Floodlight Cam Pro, Outdoor Cam Pro, and Power over Ethernet models including Spotlight Cam Pro POE, Outdoor Cam Pro POE, and Wired Doorbell Elite. Retinal 4K delivers clearer video with 10x zoom, enhanced low-light performance, and AI tuning. The technology captures video that looks closer to natural eyesight, making it easier to identify details in challenging conditions.

Retinal 2K Vision has been added to the new Indoor Cam Plus and Wired Doorbell Plus. It increases pixel density and overall clarity, offering a reliable way to monitor homes through the Ring app.

Ring has also introduced new AI features. Alexa+ Greetings turns Alexa into a doorbell attendant. It can interact with visitors, manage deliveries, and provide instructions while keeping the homeowner updated. Familiar Faces helps reduce unnecessary notifications by recognizing known individuals and tagging them in notifications, video events, and timelines.

Another feature is Search Party, an AI-powered tool for lost pets. If a neighbor reports a missing dog, outdoor Ring cameras in the area can use AI to look for matches. If detected, owners receive an alert with a picture of the dog and related footage. The homeowner can then choose to share the information with their neighbor. The feature will expand to cats and other pets after launch.

The new lineup is available for pre-order today. Wired Doorbell Pro is priced at $249.99, Wired Doorbell Plus at $179.99, Outdoor Cam Pro at $199.99 ($299.98 PoE), Spotlight Cam Pro at $249.99 ($349.98 PoE), Floodlight Cam Pro at $279.99, Indoor Cam Plus at $59.99, and Wired Doorbell Elite at $499.99. Search Party for dogs will roll out in November. Alexa+ Greetings and Familiar Faces will launch in December.

The new Ring Outdoor Cam Plus arrives with an expanded field of view and Ring Low Light Sight Technology. Thanks to its 2K video recording, users can expect higher resolution footage. This model can be charged with a USB-C port, or even use a battery or the solar panel accessory for power. It features a convenient mount system for easy installation and offers dual band WiFi support for wireless control as well.

The wireless connection allows the Ring Outdoor Cam Plus to live stream, offer real time alerts, and two way communication via audio. Users can even pay a small subscription fee of 4.99 US Dollars for the Ring Home Basic option to enable other features like saving motion captures and package detection as well. There is even a plug-in version that allows for 24 x 7 video recording and AI powered Smart Video search.

Meanwhile, the Ring Home premium subscription can go up to 19.99 US Dollars per month. The Ring Outdoor Cam Plus is currently available for pre-orders on the brand’s official website in the US and on Amazon. Gucci, the globally renowned luxury fashion brand and Ōura, the Finnish health electronics manufacturer, mostly known for its Oura smart ring, have joined forces to create a new premium smart ring for the market. 

Priced at US$950, the Gucci x Oura Ring is equipped with all of the health monitoring features found on Ōura’s third-generation smart ring fitness tracker, but with an exquisitely luxurious exterior that is designed by Gucci.

So why should you consider dropping almost 950 USD for a smart finger ring, when you can get yourself a smart watch instead? 

Let’s start with the build, the Gucci Oura Ring is fully decorated with high-end premium materials, including a black synthetic corundum base, surrounded by 18-karat gold braids, and a single 18-karat gold Gucci logo. As you can already tell, these are far more elaborate than the Oura Ring Gen 3’s standard finishings which are offered in either silver, gold, glossy black, or matte black painted colourways.

Coming to the tech features of the Gucci Oura Ring, the marketing materials reveal that the ring is a tailor-made wellness tech product.

 “Revealing the idiosyncrasies of both the conscious and subconscious, the Gucci x Oura Ring becomes a full expression of the self”, the product claims. “With 24/7 heart rate monitoring, seven temperature sensors, and sleep analysis, the smart ring decodes each individual day through three daily scores measuring sleep, activity, and readiness. As for the dimensions, since it is a finger ring, it only weighs in at 4 to 6 grams, but due to the miniature size, the finger ring does not have a screen. Instead, the finger ring is Bluetooth connected to your smartphone/another Bluetooth device to transfer your heart rate data and sleep cycle patterns over for storage. The ring is also rated for 100m depth of water resistance.

The Gucci Oura Ring is compatible with Apple Health and Google Fit health tracking applications for ease of analysis and reading your current health statistics.

In short, if you want to track your health, but you don’t want the size of the smartwatch or the fitness band, a smart finger ring might be your option. The Oura Ring Gen 3 retails for 399 USD, and if you want luxury to go along with it, the Gucci x Oura Ring retails for 950 USD.

Starting September 28th, you can apply for an invitation to purchase the Ring Always Home Cam and beta test it. The device is basically a Ring camera attached to a drone that can fly pre-determined paths across your home using the Ring app or when a Ring Alarm sensor is triggered.

It streams video footage in 1080p to the Ring app and flies with enclosed propellers. The enclosure helps protects it in the rare event of its obstacle avoidance technology failing. The drone is fully autonomous and requires only commands to fly its preset paths. It is designed to be used on a single floor only, although multi-floor support may be added in the future.

The purpose of the Ring Always Home Cam is to help users keep tabs on their home when they are not around without needing dozens of cameras across each and every room. Instead, a watchful eye can be kept on every nook and cranny of the house with a single device that records when it’s in flight. And when not in use, it simply docks itself into its charging dock that blocks its lens.

The device can be ‘taught’ to fly over to specific points in the house such as the door or kitchen stove. It can also be tied to a Ring Alarm security system and buzz over to any action, such as a door opening.

The Ring Always Home Cam was announced last year (via The Verge) and has come a long way from its early prototypes thanks to “a thousand refinements”. Thus, it is now ready for people’s homes. But not everyone’s.

As it stands, the Ring home surveillance drone can be only availed through an invite-only program at the moment. The program can be described as a sort of post-beta test flight.

“I have it in my home, and it does work,” says Ring founder Jamie Siminoff. “But today’s homes are so unique, so we really need to get it into more customers’ homes to make sure everything we are doing is right.” After all, it is an autonomous flying machine in your home. “With any other product, we would have probably just been shipping. With this one, we are going to take our time, make sure it’s right before we go to full, general availability.”

Even with less than two weeks to go before the end of September, there are still several products scheduled to launch this month. Now Amazon is trying to squeeze a last-minute launch into the calendar.

The e-commerce giant has announced that it will hold an event on September 28. The event is slated to begin at 12 PM Eastern Time and Amazon is expected to announce a handful of new hardware products, some of which should launch under its Echo line. The Verge reports that the invite says there will be “news about our latest Amazon devices, features, and services.”

Among the new Echo device expected to launch is a new Echo Show that can be wall-mounted. The device was first revealed in a Bloomberg report in February, and it mentioned a likely release by the end of this year or next year. The new Echo Show is reported to be between 10 – 13 inches in size and will serve as a sort of command center for the home. It is expected to have a price tag between $200 and $250.

Amazon may also launch its first Ring Car Dashcam which leaked back in June of this year. Ring is an Amazon-owned company that deals in home security. It already sells several home security products such as doorbells, alarms, and smart cameras, but last year, Amazon, announced a new line of products targeted at car security.

Unlike other manufacturers, Amazon’s events are not usually live-streamed, so there is no way for the public to watch the September 28 event.
