Chinese space launch company Oriental Space successfully conducted a critical test for their Gravity-1 rocket. This test involved transporting the rocket in a vertical state over 1700 kilometers by sea in China, simulating a real launch scenario.

The journey included assembly, embarkation, transportation, disassembly, and disembarkation

The test aimed to ensure the rocket’s ability to withstand harsh sea conditions and verify safety measures during long-distance maritime transport. The 920 nautical mile journey from Dandong to Lianyungang included assembly, roll-on/roll-off embarkation, transportation, disassembly, and disembarkation.

The test also addressed logistical challenges by successfully separating and reattaching the satellite cover assembly at a port stop. This innovation allows for more convenient docking procedures at launch sites.

This successful test paves the way for Oriental Space’s “front shop and back factory” model, with their newly completed Assembly, Integration and Testing Center serving as the core.

The Gravity-1 rocket itself boasts impressive capabilities. As China’s (and the world’s) first all-solid bundled medium-sized launch vehicle, it is designed for rapid response and large-scale deployment of small and medium satellites in low Earth orbit. It offers a flexible configuration with a core stage, boosters, and switchable engine options for varying payloads.

3-D printed rockets represent an exciting advancement in the field of aerospace engineering. This manufacturing technique allows for the creation of complex geometries and intricate designs that would be difficult to produce using traditional manufacturing methods. With 3-D printing, rockets can be built more quickly, with fewer parts and less waste. This technology also enables more customization and optimization of the rocket’s components, resulting in improved performance and reliability. However, practicality still seems a little far off for 3-D printed rockets, as showcased in the recent launch of the same.

Relativity Space has made progress with its 3D-printed rocket after a successful launch from Cape Canaveral. The Terran 1 vehicle took off on Wednesday, although it failed to reach orbit after the second-stage engine ignited only momentarily. Despite the setback, the company remains positive and considers the mission an accomplishment. The rocket withstood Max-Q, the moment when the most stress is placed on the 3D-printed design. It was also carrying the first metal produced from Relativity’s 3D printing system.

Relativity’s previous two launch attempts were troubled by problems, including cooling propellant and software flaws. The company is using the expendable Terran 1 to demonstrate the viability of its 3D printing technique ahead of the reusable Terran R rocket’s planned 2024 launch. Relativity aims to create simpler, more reliable and cheaper rockets that can be ready within weeks. This could significantly reduce the cost of delivering satellites and experiments into orbit.

Relativity faces increasing pressure to complete testing, as it already has contracts to launch OneWeb satellites and Impulse Space’s commercial Mars mission. With competitors such as SpaceX, Blue Origin and Rocket Lab, setbacks limit Relativity’s chances of winning business. Nevertheless, the successful launch represents progress and the company promises updates in the coming days as it seeks to further develop its 3D printing technique.

3D printing technology has come a long way since it was first introduced. What was once used mainly for creating small figures and trinkets has now expanded into much larger applications. In an impressive demonstration of this technology’s capabilities, US-based aerospace start-up Relativity Space is preparing to launch the first-ever 3D-printed rocket into space. Here are the details…

Terran 1 rocket: the largest 3D-printed object to attempt orbital flight

A US aerospace start-up, Relativity Space, is preparing to launch the first-ever 3D-printed rocket into space on March 8. The Terran 1 rocket is set to be the largest 3D-printed object to attempt orbital flight, standing at 35 meters tall and made up of 85% 3D printed material. Compared to the cost of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which can lift over 22,000 kilograms into orbit and costs around $67 million per flight, Relativity Space is charging $12 million per flight.

During the first test flight, the Terran 1 rocket will not carry any payload, and the rocket is designed to lift up to 1250 kilograms into low-Earth orbit. The company has decided to skip one last planned test of the rocket, a static fire, and go straight to launch. Although this decision increases the likelihood of an abort on their first launch attempt, the company believes that if all systems are performing as expected, it is more beneficial to launch during their next operation than to subject the vehicle to additional ground testing.

Relativity Space’s ultimate goal is to facilitate an industrial society on Mars, and while the Terran 1 is too small to make the journey, it is designed to bring small satellites into orbit. The rocket serves as a prototype for the company’s 66-meter-tall Terran R rocket, which is planned to be fully reusable, mostly 3D-printed, and able to carry up to 20,000 kilograms into orbit. In addition to launching larger satellites into orbit around Earth, the Terran R rocket will offer customers a point-to-point space freighter capable of missions between the Earth, Moon, and Mars.

According to the Relativity Space representative, Terran 1 is their development platform to get to Terran R, which they believe is the vehicle customers need to make significant advancements in space travel. The successful launch of the Terran 1 rocket is a crucial step towards Relativity Space’s ambition to facilitate an industrial society on Mars and demonstrates the potential of 3D printing technology to revolutionize space travel and make it more accessible and affordable.

China has begun the work for its first commercial spacecraft launch site at Wenchang in the southern island province of Hainan.

There is already a state-owned launch center in Hainan called the Wenchang Space Launch Center, which is the fourth launch site in China. The other three are the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center which was the country’s earliest base and where most launches and tests have been conducted to date, Taiyuan Launch Centre which is ideal for launching solar-synchronous satellites and Xichang Satellite Launch Center which is designed mainly to launch powerful thrust rockets and geostationary satellites.

In China, a commercial space center refers to a site invested in and built by an entity other than the Government or Military. Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site program is a joint venture of the Hainan government and three space conglomerates－China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, and China Satellite Network Group.

Source: hnftp.gov.cn

The work on the commercial launch site will be done by an affiliate of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. The estimated time for completion is one year and the site will be operational from 2024. The new launch site which covers an approximate area of 133 hectares, will have a launch pad, water spraying systems, lightning protection towers, hoisting equipment, transition transportation equipment, diversion devices, a fixed service tower, and more.

Feng Fei, the provincial governor, of Wenchang said that Hainan will make full use of the new launch site to establish an entire space industry chain covering carrier rockets, satellites, and data processing businesses. He further added that the aim was to transform Wenchange into a world-class spaceport.

The Wenchang Launch Center is China’s southernmost launch site and is chosen for its low latitude and closeness to the equator.

If a spacecraft is launched from a site near the Equator, then it gets a natural speed boost caused due to Earth’s rotation, which in turn helps to reduce the cost of fuel and boosters. An optimal launch site needs to be at a coastal area near the equator as it maximizes the use of the earth’s rotational speed and gives an advantage of orientation that helps to arrive quickly at the geostationary orbit.

Major Spacecraft Launch sites like Cape Canaveral, Vandenberg, and Sriharikota are all located near the coast.

China’s Space Industry ranks second in the world just after the US. China National Space Administration (CNSA) has overseen the development of China’s space program which has launched ballistic missiles, artificial satellites, manned space flights, and the famous Tiangong Space station. The ambition of this Asian giant does not stop here as it plans to explore the entire solar system.

With the development of a commercial launch site, China is now stepping into the commercial space era along with the US.
