Design, Display, and Build

One of the biggest advantages of the Nintendo Switch 2 is its hybrid design. It offers greater versatility with its three modes: handheld, tabletop, and TV. The removable JoyCons allows for a fun and engaging multiplayer experience as well. It sports a 7.9-inch LCD display with a 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

On the other hand, the ASUS ROG Ally is similar to the Steam Deck as a standard gaming handheld. So you’re getting a 7-inch display that is flanked by a typical controller layout. These aren’t removable and are built for a single person. There is a 1080p screen that also offers a 120Hz refresh rate.

Powered by up to AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, the ROG Ally is one of the more powerful handhelds that can take run a plethora of PC titles. This chip brings RDNA 3 graphics, 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. A 40Wh battery pack powers this device, which weighs 608 grams. Battery life was one aspect that the ROG Ally faced criticism on, but its later iterations like the ROG Ally X brought major improvements. The Ally X has an 80Wh cell, with 24GB RAM, improved joysticks, and improved cooling. Since it is a Windows PC, you get access to your massive gaming library from popular platforms like Steam.

While specific hardware details are limited, the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced with a custom Nvidia processor which brings support for 4K gaming when docked for TV play. Docking enables faster performance for the console, although handheld gaming is still possible thanks to its 5,220mAh battery pack. Nintendo is known for its massively popular exclusive franchises. From Mario to The Legend of Zelda, there’s plenty of experiences that you just can’t find anywhere else.

Price & Verdict

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to release on 5th June 2025 for 449.99 US Dollars. Meanwhile, the ROG Ally is available in different configurations that can go for anywhere between 600 to 700 US Dollars. But unlike the Switch 2, it is already available in the market, including the upgraded Ally X variant.

So choosing between the Nintendo Switch 2 and the ASUS ROG Ally depends largely on your gaming preferences. If you’re drawn to Nintendo’s exclusive titles and the flexibility of a hybrid console, the Switch 2 is an appealing choice. However, the ROG Ally has a vast PC library and brings Windows 11 functionality as well.

Handheld gaming consoles have become quite popular in recent years. There are many great options like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck. But in India, gaming handhelds are mostly restricted to the gray market. So far, the ASUS ROG Ally is one of the few portable consoles that is sold in the market. Although, Lenovo is gearing up to release its own alternative. But how does the Lenovo Legion Go stack up against the ASUS ROG Ally? Let’s find out.

Lenovo Legion Go vs ASUS ROG Ally: Legion packs a taller screen

ASUS released the ROG Ally with a 7-inch IPS LCD panel with a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and a 16:10 aspect ratio. This panel offers a 120Hz refresh rate, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for protection, along with a variable refresh rate and low frame compensation support as well.

But while these are decent specs, Lenovo sought to bring a better visual experience on its own handheld console. The Legion Go sports a taller 8.8-inch IPS touchscreen display that has a WQXGA resolution (2560×1600 pixels). So you get sharper resolution along with a smoother 144Hz refresh rate panel and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection.

Performance, Battery, & More

In terms of performance, both gaming handhelds are quite evenly matched, at least on paper. The Legion Go and ROG Ally are equipped with AMD’s Ryzen Z1 series processors. The former has the Ryzen Z1 Extreme while the latter is available in Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme options. Lenovo pairs this chipset with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage. You also get an option to expand the storage via a microSD card slot.

On the other hand, the ROG Ally packs 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM but only 512GB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD storage. These two models run on the Windows 11 OS out of the box. But another area where the Legion Go edges ahead of the ROG Ally is the battery. ASUS’ console is powered by a 40Wh battery that supports 65W charging. Meanwhile, a 49.2Wh cell runs the Legion Go with Super Rapid Charge support. But this difference shouldn’t impact battery life much considering the larger screen and higher resolution.

Since handheld consoles were built to be portable the weight also factors into the overall experience. Having said that, the ROG Ally weighs 608 grams, which is noticeably lighter than the massive Legion Go. Lenovo’s handheld weighs a hefty 856 grams, so let’s just say you’re getting a light workout.

Pricing

The pricing is another major aspect that could determine if the Legion Go is a good alternative to the ROG Ally. ASUS released its portable console for 69,990 INR or about 853 US Dollars for the Z1 Extreme variant (base Z1 costs 64,990 INR). The Legion Go will be announced in India for the first time on 1st July 2024, with its pricing set at 89,990 INR (roughly 1,079 US Dollars). With such similar specs, it seems hard to justify paying an additional 200 US Dollar premium for a slightly larger screen. The higher resolution is welcomed too, but not many graphically intensive games can take advantage of it. We can expect special launch offers and other sweet deals, so stick around for more updates.

ASUS is offering a great discount on its popular ROG Ally handheld gaming console. The company’s ROG Ally is getting a price cut in the Indian market, with the discounts going live on Amazon and Flipkart during the ongoing Republic Day Sales.

The Taiwanese tech giant released its gaming handheld last year. To recall, the portable gaming rig runs on Windows and is capable of running AAA titles on the go. But that’s not all, the company is also offering an additional discount of 1,500 INR on SBI credit cards on Amazon.

Asus has already announced that it is working on a new handheld gaming console, dubbed the ROG Ally. However, prior to its official launch, the console’s pricing has been revealed after being sighted on e-commerce listings. So here are all the details.

Asus ROG Ally Ryzen Z1 Extreme version costs $699

The Taiwanese PC maker’s upcoming ROG Ally was recently spotted on certain e-commerce listing that revealed its price tag. The handheld console’s top end variant which is powered by a AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chipset that was recently announced was sighted carrying a price tag of 699 US Dollars. Notably, this variant is also equipped with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. This means that is slightly more expensive that the 512GB version of the Steam Deck console.

The leak arrives from known tipster SnoopyTech, who shared the pricing on Twitter. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report so take this news with a pinch of salt. The leak also offers a brief set of specifications as well, which includes a 7 inch Full HD display with 120HZ refresh rate support. Furthermore, this also features 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, AMD Radeon Navi3 graphics with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme chipset, and Dolby Atmos Surround Sound.

The leak also shares some promotional notes which state that “”Play almost any game that runs on Windows, Steam, GOG, XBOX Game Pass, GeForce Now, Android, and more” along with Play games in co-op mode on the same devices using 2 XBOX controllers and even connect to your TV to play on the big screen,” and “You can even connect to the ROG XG Mobile Dock, a keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc to enjoy all your favorite AAA games at even higher resolutions and frame rates. ASUS, which has a lineup of gaming devices under its ROG brand, is gearing up to launch a handheld gaming console named ASUS ROG Ally to take on the likes of Steam Valve.

The company teased this new device on 1st April, which led many to believe that it was April Fools’ joke. But now, the brand has confirmed that it is indeed building this new product.

Based on the information shared by the company, the ROG Ally will be running the Windows 11 operating system and will be powered by a custom AMD Ryzen chipset. There is also a possibility for the users to plug in an external GPU for playing resource-intensive games.

YouTube Dave 2D claims that the device will come with a 7-inch touchscreen display which will offer a Full HD 1080p screen resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is also claimed that the ROG Ally is narrower, thinner, and slightly lighter than the Steam Valve, with 608 grams of weight and measuring 280mm x 113mm x 39mm.

Another hands-on video from Linus Tech Tips shows some software customizations that the company has set up for the prototype unit. For instance, there’s a fingerprint reader on the device, which is speculated to be used to switch between different accounts.

Currently, ASUS hasn’t revealed the launch date or pricing information for the ASUS ROG Ally handheld gaming console. However, the device has a micro-landing page on Best Buy where interested users can register to get notified when the device is available for pre-order. We believe that the device will get launched in the coming months, but we will have to wait for the official confirmation.
