Today, we are putting the accent on three vanilla versions of the latest flagship gaming series from the best brands in this niche. We are talking about the Asus ROG Phone 6, the Black Shark 5 by Xiaomi, and the REDMAGIC 7 by Nubia. All of these devices have a Pro variant, but it is not needed if you do not need certain advanced components. And thanks to these vanilla versions, you can get better prices. This is a comparison between the specifications of the Asus ROG Phone 6, the Xiaomi Black Shark 5, and the Redmagic 7 by Nubia.

Design

The Black Shark 5 by Xiaomi has nothing special when it comes to design. The REDMAGIC 7 is more interesting with its glass back and aluminum frame, but the most incredible one is the Asus ROG Phone 6 sporting an aluminum frame and a glass back protected by Gorilla Glass 3 with an illuminated RGB logo. So it wins the comparison and there is also to say that it is the only one with the IPX4 certification guaranteeing water resistance. The REDMAGIC 7 and the Asus ROG Phone 6 include pressure sensitive zones on the rear side which can be used as gaming triggers, while the Black Shark 5 by Xiaomi has two physical pop-up triggers on the right side. Do you prefer pressure sensitive areas or physical gaming triggers?

Display

The display of the Asus ROG Phone 6 is the most advanced one, at least on paper. It has a 6.78-inch panel with AMOLED technology able to show up to one billion colors with great image quality. It has a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2448 pixels, a 165 Hz refresh rate, the HDR10+ certification, the Gorilla Glass Victus protection by Corning, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. The silver medal goes to the REDMAGIC 7 equipped with an AMOLED display sporting a 6.8-inch diagonal. This panel is able to show one billion colors as well, with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 165 Hz refresh rate, and the Gorilla Glass 5 protection by Corning, as well as an in-display fingerprint reader. The Black Shark 5 has an inferior AMOLED display with a diagonal of 6.67 inches, a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 144 Hz refresh rate, and a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

The most powerful phone of this trio is the Asus ROG Phone 6 because it has the strongest processor: the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 by Qualcomm built at 4 nm with an octa-core architecture composed of one Cortex X2 CPU running at a max frequency of 3.19 GHz, three Cortex A710 CPUs running at 2.75 GHz, 4 Cortex A510 CPUs running at 1.8 GHz, and an Adreno 730 GPU. The chipset is paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of native storage. But you should not underestimate the REDMAGIC 7 with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform, up to 18 GB of RAM, up to 512 GB of native storage, and a built-in cooling fan lowering the heat even during long gaming sessions. All of these phones run Android 12 out of the box.

Camera

It looks like the Asus ROG Phone 6 has the most interesting camera department, composed of a 50 MP main camera, a 13 MP ultrawide sensor, and a 5 MP macro lens. The Nubia REDMAGIC 7 and the Black Shark 5 are more or less at the same level with their 64 MP triple cameras, but the former has a disappointing 8 MP selfie camera.

Battery

With the Asus ROG Phone 6, you get the biggest battery, one of the biggest ones even found on a flagship phone: it has a capacity of 6000 mAh and it supports 65W fast charging.

Price

Asus ROG Phone 6 costs $1100/€1100, REDMAGIC 7 starts from €630/$630, and Black Shark 5 costs €500/$500 in its base configuration. The ROG Phone 6 is definitely a better phone thanks to its superior chipset, bigger battery, and better display, but the REDMAGIC 7 provides the best value for money.

So far, teasers and leaks have revealed the design along with almost all of the specifications of the smartphone. So here’s what we can expect from the July 5 launch event.

Design & display

Design-wise, the ROG Phone 6 series is expected to be quite similar to the previous year’s devices. However, leaked renders have revealed some minor changes to the back panel. Firstly, the device appears to house a more prominent camera module that houses three lenses and an LED Flash. The back panel also gets a second screen that is positioned vertically.

The right side of the smartphone will feature the power button, a volume rocker, and AirTriggers on both ends. On the left side, the devices will likely house a USB-C charging port and the SIM-trey. Coming to the bottom, the devices are expected to bring another USB-C port for charging, however, there is no confirmation if the devices will offer a 3.5mm audio jack.

On the front, the ROG Phone 6 is revealed to feature a 6.78-inch Full HD+ AMOLED panel with 165Hz refresh rate and an in-display fingerprint scanner for security. The renders of the vanilla model also reveal slim side bezels along with a noticeable chin and forehead.

Specs

Coming to the hardware under the hood, the devices are confirmed to have the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Recent Geekbench listings have revealed that the vanilla ROG Phone 6 and the ROG Phone 6 Ultimate offer almost identical performance, so the only difference between the base model, the Pro model, and the ultimate model will likely be the RAM and storage options along with some extra some additional sensors.

ASUS ROG Phone 6 Devilcase Guardian Lite Plus case

The base variant is expected to offer up to 16GB of RAM while the Ultimate model will offer 18GB of RAM. The devices will also offer up to 512 GB of built-in storage. The devices will feature a 6,000mAh dual-cell battery with 65W fast charging support and will run on Android 12-based ROG UI out of the box. Lastly, the ROG Phone 6 series will be the first among gaming smartphones to offer IPX4 splash resistance.

Camera

For optics, the vanilla model is tipped to pack a triple camera setup on the rear consisting of a 64MP main camera accompanied by an ultra-wide camera and macro sensor. On the front, we will likely get a 12MP selfie snapper. The camera setup is expected to be the same across the entire lineup.

Accessories

A couple of recent leaks have surfaced showcasing the new snap-on cooler and a gamepad designed especially for the ROG Phone 6 series.

The gamepad will attach to both ends of the device transforming it into a hand-held console like the Nintendo Wii. It can also be used as a proper controller for the phone and other devices using the Bluetooth connectivity mode.

The snap-on cooler will likely be called the AeroActive Cooler 6. It is designed to help with reducing the overall running temperature of the smartphone during long gaming sessions by increasing the heat dissipation capability of the back panel.

ASUS ROG Phone 6 design

The front of the ROG Phone 6 is not clearly visible in the TENAA images. However, it appears that its display will feature a centrally positioned punch-hole. The screen will come integrated with a fingerprint sensor. The rear shell of the device has a horizontal triple camera unit at the top-left corner.

It seems to be fitted with a vertically aligned secondary display towards the centre. Some sort of LED indicator seems to be present on the opposite side of the secondary screen. The ROG logo and Tencent Games branding are available towards the bottom of the back panel. The right side of the device features a volume rocker and a power key. The TENAA images match the 2D renders, which were leaked by Equal Leaks earlier this year.

ASUS ROG Phone 6 specifications

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 will feature a 6.78-inch AMOLED display that produces a 165Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution. It will come preloaded with the Android 12 OS and ROG UI. It will feature a 12-megapixel front camera, and a 64-megapixel triple camera unit.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powered device will come with 18 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. It may pack a 6,000mAh battery dual-cell battery with 65W fast charging support. It is unclear whether all three rumored devices, such as the ROG Phone 6, 6 Pro, and 6 Ultimate will debut on July 5.

It appears that ASUS may win this battle since it has already confirmed that the ROG Phone 6 series will break cover on July 5. Recently, the 3C authority of China approved two ROG Phone 6 series devices with AI2201_A and AI2201_B model numbers. The AI2201_B has now passed TENAA certification, through which its specifications have been revealed. However, it is unclear whether it will debut as the ROG Phone 6 or ROG Phone 6 Pro.

ASUS ROG Phone 6 specifications

The ROG Phone 6 (AI2201_B) has a thickness of 10.39mm and weighs around 229 grams. It will feature a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen that carries support for a 165Hz refresh rate. The exact screen resolution is not mentioned in the listing. It is expected to come preinstalled with Android 12 and ROG Phone UI.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, which clocks at 3.2GHz will power the ROG Phone 6. The device will be equipped with 18 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in storage. It will be backed by a 2,925mAh (rated value) dual-cell battery. The total size of its battery could be 6,000mAh. The 3C certification of the device revealed that it may support 65W fast charging.

The ROG Phone 6’s front will be fitted with a 12-megapixel camera. Its rear-facing triple camera unit will have a 64-megapixel primary camera. The device also features an in-screen fingerprint scanner. The TENAA listing does not have images of the phone. Rumors have it that the ROG Phone 6 will come with a refreshed rear design.

While the ROG Phone 6 will be announced on July 5 in China, Taiwan, and the US, it may not go on sale immediately. The launch date of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra is yet to be confirmed. However, it appears that the 12 Ultra could be made available for purchase in China before the ROG Phone 6 lineup.

At the beginning of this year, tipster Paras Guglani had evidence of ASUS developing firmware for the ROG Phone 6 series. It was found that the Taiwanese brand is working on six models, such as the ASUS AI2201_A, AI2201_B, AI2201_C, AI2201_D, AI2201_E, and AI2201_F. The tipster mentioned that the AI2201_B and AI2201_D variants could be heading to India. The former could be called the ROG Phone 6 Pro, whereas the latter could be the ROG Phone 6 Ultimate.

Coming back to the 3C certification, the two variants of the ROG Phone 6 that have been approved include AI2201_A and AI2201_B. The 3C listing reveals that a 65W charger will accompany both devices.

To recall, the ROG Phone 5 series and the ROG Phone 5s lineup, which debuted in 2021, carry support for 65W fast charging. So, it looks like the ROG Phone 6 line may not be better at charging than its previous generation.

ASUS has already confirmed that the ROG Phone 6 series’ display will carry support for a 165Hz refresh rate. The Taiwanese manufacturer is yet to confirm the other details of the lineup. Later in August, the company launched the updated version of the phones dubbed ROG Phone 5s and 5s Pro. Now, ASUS seems to be gearing to launch this year’s gaming phones as new 2D renders(EqualLeaks) of the upcoming ASUS ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro have arrived on the internet.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro look quite similar to the ROG Phone 5 devices. However, there’s a marginal change in cameras, secondary display, and the back panel’s graphics. The ROG Phone 6 series would be sporting a slightly different camera design. It will be a horizontal camera island with a triple camera system on both the 6 and 6 Pro.

Interestingly, the secondary display on the ROG Phone 6 would be bigger in comparison to the ROG Phone 5’s POMOLED display. Again, this time around, the screen will be exactly vertical unlike the slanted screen on the ROG Phone 5. Interestingly, one of the ROG 6 phones has a larger display and different back graphics to that of the other one. There’s also the Republic of Gamers branding at the bottom.

Apart from this, there isn’t anything to learn from the renders. But we can expect the upcoming ROG Phones to launch in the coming months considering that the ROG Phone 5 debuted in March 2021.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 Specifications

The phones boast an in-display fingerprint scanner. The series has a 64MP + 13MP + 5MP triple camera system and a single camera at the front.

Inside, the ROG Phone 5, 5 Pro, and 5 Ultimate is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC.
