<p>In recent years, foldable devices have taken the tech world by storm, combining portability with larger displays. From smartphones that unfold into tablets to laptops that transform into versatile productivity hubs, foldable devices have redefined our expectations of modern technology.</p>

<p>However, the horizon is expanding beyond foldables as manufacturers explore new form factors, including rollable displays, multi-fold devices, and ultra-thin smartphones. These innovations promise to offer users even greater flexibility, functionality, and style, paving the way for a transformative future in consumer electronics.</p>

<h3><strong>Rollable OLED Displays</strong></h3>

<p>Rollable OLED displays have emerged as an exciting evolution of display technology. Unlike foldables, which rely on hinges to transform their form, rollable devices use flexible displays that can extend or retract seamlessly. This approach not only enables sleek designs but also solves some of the limitations of foldable screens, such as visible creases and durability concerns.</p>

<h4><strong>Rollable TVs and Laptops</strong></h4>

<p>LG pioneered the rollable OLED movement with its 65-inch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/20/lg-signature-oled-tv-r-finally-goes-on-sale-in-south-korea-for-100-million-won87000/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Signature OLED TV R</a>, launched in 2019. This revolutionary TV could roll into its base, offering three viewing modes: full view, line view, and zero view.</p>

<p>Despite its innovation, the TV’s exorbitant $100,000 price tag limited its market reach, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/lg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LG</a> discontinued the product in 2024. Nevertheless, the concept demonstrated the potential of rollable displays in transforming home entertainment.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="682" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable-1024x682.jpg?x44794" alt="ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable" class="wp-image-670863" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable-1068x711.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/ThinkBook-Plus-Gen-6-Rollable.jpg 1420w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>In the laptop space, Samsung Display is set to mass-produce rollable OLED panels by April 2025, with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/lenovo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lenovo</a> leading the charge. Lenovo’s ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable, showcased at CES 2025, features a 14-inch display that extends vertically to 16.7 inches.</p>

<p>This design enhances multitasking capabilities, allowing users to stack windows or view tall spreadsheets effortlessly. While priced at a premium $3,499, the ThinkBook Plus G6 marks a significant step toward making rollable laptops a reality.</p>

<h4><strong>Rollable Smartphones</strong></h4>

<p>Rollable smartphones are an exciting evolution in mobile technology, with companies like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/tecno/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tecno</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oppo</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motorola</a> actively advancing their rollable projects. These brands have already showcased prototypes, aiming to bring the first rollable devices to market soon. These smartphones promise to combine large, tablet-sized displays with compact, pocket-friendly designs.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Tecno-Phantom-Ultimate.jpg?x44794" alt="Tecno Phantom Ultimate" class="wp-image-670864" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Tecno-Phantom-Ultimate.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Tecno-Phantom-Ultimate-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Tecno-Phantom-Ultimate-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Tecno-Phantom-Ultimate-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Tecno-Phantom-Ultimate-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>For instance, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/09/01/ifa-2023-tecno-phantom-ultimate-rollable-concept-phone-showcased-but-it-may-never-see-the-light-of-the-day/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tecno&#8217;s Phantom Ultimate</a> boasts a rollable display that extends from 6.55 inches to 7.11 inches in just 1.3 seconds, while Samsung&#8217;s prototypes feature displays expanding beyond 12 inches with under-display cameras for a seamless design. As this technology evolves, rollable smartphones have the potential to revolutionize mobile computing by combining portability with expansive screen sizes.</p>

<h3><strong>Multi-Fold Devices</strong></h3>

<p>Multi-fold devices take the folding concept further by introducing multiple hinges, enabling devices to transform into various configurations. These innovations aim to maximize screen size while maintaining compact form factors, providing a new level of versatility.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei Mate XT" class="wp-image-670869" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Huawei-Mate-XT-1.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<h4><strong>Tri-Fold Smartphones</strong></h4>

<p>Huawei’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xt-ultimate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mate XT Ultimate Design</a>, launched in September 2024, showcases the potential of tri-fold devices. With two hinges and a 10.2-inch display when fully unfolded, the Mate XT offers a tablet-like experience in a pocketable design. Despite durability concerns and a steep $2,800 price tag, Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone highlights the possibilities of multi-fold technology. Other manufacturers, such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/08/28/ifa-2024-tecno-debuts-phantom-ultimate-2-a-groundbreaking-tri-fold-concept-phone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tecno</a> and Samsung, are also developing tri-fold devices, with Samsung reportedly <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/23/samsung-officially-teases-its-first-tri-fold-what-to-expect-and-when/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing to launch a tri-fold smartphone</a> alongside its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Fold 7</a> in 2025.</p>

<h4><strong>Challenges and Opportunities</strong></h4>

<p>While multi-fold devices offer unmatched versatility, they also face significant challenges. The complexity of their designs increases the risk of wear and tear, particularly in the hinges and flexible displays. Additionally, the high production costs make these devices prohibitively expensive for most consumers. However, as manufacturing processes improve and economies of scale come into play, multi-fold devices could become more accessible, appealing to professionals and tech enthusiasts alike.</p>

<h3><strong>Ultra-Thin Smartphones</strong></h3>

<p>The race for ultra-thin smartphones, reminiscent of past trends, is making a comeback in 2025. Companies like Samsung and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> are leading this resurgence with devices that prioritize sleekness without compromising functionality.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="640" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1-1024x640.png?x44794" alt="Galaxy S25 Edge" class="wp-image-669954" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1-1024x640.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1-300x188.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1-768x480.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1-696x435.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1-1068x668.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1-672x420.png 672w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Galaxy-S25-Edge-1.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<h4><strong>Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge</strong></h4>

<p>Unveiled at the 2025 Galaxy Unpacked event, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/22/samsung-teases-ultra-slim-galaxy-s25-edge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy S25 Edge</a> promises to be one of the thinnest smartphones ever, measuring just 6.4mm at its slimmest point. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, the device combines performance with portability. Despite its compact design, the S25 Edge features a dual-camera setup and a 3,786mAh battery, demonstrating that thinness doesn’t have to come at the expense of usability. Scheduled for a May 2025 release, the S25 Edge aims to redefine premium smartphone design.</p>

<h4><strong>Apple’s iPhone 17 Air</strong></h4>

<p>Apple is also exploring thinner designs with its rumored <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-17-air/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 17 Air</a>. Expected to measure between 5.5mm and 6mm, this ultra-slim device could feature a 6.6-inch OLED display and Apple’s A19 chip. While the thinner profile may result in a smaller battery, Apple’s advancements in energy efficiency could offset this limitation. Positioned as a luxury product, the iPhone 17 Air reflects Apple’s strategy to appeal to style-conscious consumers.</p>

<h4><strong>The Appeal of Slim Devices</strong></h4>

<p>Ultra-thin smartphones offer a unique blend of style and portability, appealing to users who prioritize aesthetics. However, achieving such slim designs requires innovation in battery technology, thermal management, and internal component layout. Manufacturers are leveraging advances in materials and engineering to overcome these challenges, ensuring that thinner devices still deliver robust performance and durability.</p>

<h3><strong>The Future of Smart Devices</strong></h3>

<p>As rollables, multi-fold designs, and ultra-thin devices enter the market, they signal a new era of innovation. These form factors are not merely technological novelties; they represent a shift toward more adaptable, user-centric designs. Whether for work, entertainment, or everyday tasks, the next generation of devices promises to enhance functionality while pushing the boundaries of portability and design.</p>

<p>With continuous advancements in materials, manufacturing, and software, these new form factors are set to become integral to our digital lives. The coming years will likely see these innovations mature, becoming more affordable and accessible to the masses, ultimately redefining what we expect from our devices.</p>

<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tecno">Tecno</a> showcased its vision for the future at <a href="http://giozmochina.com/tag/mwc-2024">MWC 2024 </a>with several innovative prototypes, including the highly anticipated Phantom Ultimate. Remember last year, when the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/09/01/ifa-2023-tecno-phantom-ultimate-rollable-concept-phone-showcased-but-it-may-never-see-the-light-of-the-day/">company unveiled a rollable phone concept</a>? This concept isn&#8217;t just a dream anymore – it&#8217;s a real, functioning device.</p>

<h3>The screen transition takes only 1.3 seconds, which is commendable</h3>

<p>Imagine a phone that transforms at your fingertips. The <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tecno-phantom-ultimate">Phantom Ultimate</a> starts compact, with a 6.55-inch display. But with a simple button press, it expands to a larger 7.11-inch screen, perfect for watching videos or gaming. This ingenious design takes just 1.3 seconds, making it seamless and convenient.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-28-at-6.35.49 PM-1024x768.png?x44794" alt="Tecno Phantom Ultimate" class="wp-image-607960" /></figure></div>

<p>But Tecno&#8217;s thinking doesn&#8217;t stop there. They&#8217;ve even incorporated a &#8220;second display&#8221; on the back. This is actually the main screen cleverly wrapped around, visible through a protective window. This eliminates the need for a separate screen, maximizing efficiency.</p>

<p>The rise of foldable phones has challenged software, and Tecno seems like it&#8217;s doing pretty well in that sector. Their user interface and apps adapt effortlessly as the Phantom Ultimate expands or shrinks, ensuring a smooth user experience regardless of the screen size.</p>

<p>While the Phantom Ultimate is still under development, Tecno already boasts two successful foldable phones: the Phantom V Fold and V Flip. But their engineers aren&#8217;t resting. They&#8217;ve developed the Borderless Foldable Main Screen, a technique that minimizes bezels for an immersive viewing experience.</p>

<p>Remember that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/27/tecno-chameleon-at-mwc-2023/">color-changing phone Tecno unveiled</a> last year? The Chameleon Color Technology is back, and this time, it&#8217;s integrated into a <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-smartphone">foldable phone</a>. This technology uses tiny prisms that shift with a magnetic field, offering thousands of color options with minimal power consumption.</p>

<p>Tecno&#8217;s innovations extend beyond these concepts. The Tecno Pocket Go is a projector phone, and the Tecno Dynamic 1 boasts a transparent display. These ideas, though not yet ready for consumers, showcase Tecno&#8217;s commitment to pushing boundaries and shaping the future of mobile technology. And let&#8217;s be honest, they all look pretty cool.</p>

<p>The competition to redefine the smartphone industry is heating up as leading Chinese tech giants, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vivo</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/transsion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Transsion</a>, set their sights on unveiling the world&#8217;s first <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/rollable-screen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rollable screen</a> smartphone. According to industry insiders, the phone is expected to debut by the end of the coming year.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="650" height="368" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/TECNO-Phantom-Ultimate-1.jpg?x44794" alt="Tecno Phantom Ultimate" class="wp-image-573594" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/TECNO-Phantom-Ultimate-1.jpg 650w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/TECNO-Phantom-Ultimate-1-300x170.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></figure></div>

<h2>Vivo and Transsion to challenge Samsung&#8217;s foldables with their rollable smartphones</h2>

<p>So, what exactly is a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/rollable-smartphone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rollable smartphone</a>? Imagine a phone that can expand its screen size with a simple touch. This means users can enjoy a larger display when needed and switch back to a smaller one when it&#8217;s more convenient. It&#8217;s a glimpse into a future where devices adapt to the user&#8217;s immediate requirements.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="600" height="338" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/TECNO-Phantom-Ultimate.gif?x44794" alt="Tecno Phantom Ultimate" class="wp-image-573593" /></figure></div>

<p>Transsion has been quite vocal about its aspirations in this field and we have also seen numerous rollable concept phones and displays in the past. Just last September, the company showcased its vision for rollable screens with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/09/01/ifa-2023-tecno-phantom-ultimate-rollable-concept-phone-showcased-but-it-may-never-see-the-light-of-the-day/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Techno Phantom Ultimate</a>. This concept phone featured a screen that could smoothly transition from 6.55 inches to a more spacious 7.11 inches in just around 1.3 seconds. But it&#8217;s not just about size; this display promises an impressive resolution of 2296×1596 pixels, a crisp 388 PPI, and complete DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. Another intriguing feature is the mini display on the back, designed for notifications. Additionally, a cleverly designed anti-slip back ensures users have a secure grip on the device.</p>

<p>Now, where are these cutting-edge panels coming from? While there&#8217;s still some uncertainty, there are indications that vivo might be sourcing them from well-known tech leaders like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BOE</a> or <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-display/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung Display</a>. Industry experts suggest that BOE may be the more enthusiastic participant in this venture.</p>

<p>This shift towards rollable technology might also be a response to the challenges of outdoing Samsung in the foldable phone arena. Samsung has undeniably established itself in the foldable sector, especially with its Galaxy Fold series. While Royole may have introduced the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/29/worlds-first-foldable-smartphone-royole-flexpai-sold-out-within-few-minutes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world&#8217;s first foldable smartphone</a>, the &#8220;<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/royole-flexpai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FlexPai</a>,&#8221; it was Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Fold that truly popularized the concept.</p>

<p>By focusing on rollable screens, Chinese smartphone makers may be aiming to carve out their own niche in an industry where standing out is increasingly difficult. Samsung is also <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/24/samsung-reportedly-launch-rollable-screen-smartphone-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exploring rollable devices which is expected to debut in 2025</a>, but for now, its primary focus remains on foldables. The coming years are sure to witness an exciting competition to reshape the smartphone industry.</p>

<p>Popular tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) recently revealed that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> will begin mass production of rollable screen smartphones by 2025, setting the stage for a revolutionary shift in smartphone design and functionality. The upcoming phones are touted to showcase advanced Under Panel Camera (UPC) technology and a cutting-edge bezel-less design.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

<h2>From foldables to rollables: Samsung eyes 2025</h2>

<p>This recent revelation aligns with Samsung&#8217;s prior showcases of their innovative screen technologies. At the 2022 K-Display event, Samsung turned heads by unveiling prototype models of rollable screens, foldable tablets, and intriguingly named products like &#8220;Flex G&#8221; and &#8220;Flex S.&#8221; Given their track record, Samsung&#8217;s foray into rollable screen smartphones isn&#8217;t wholly unexpected.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Samsung Flex S and Flex G concepts" width="696" height="392" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GxlYOh6L1q4?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p>Another testament to their dedication to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/05/24/samsung-display-event-new-unveils/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flexible displays came at the 2023 SID Display Week</a> in the U.S., where Samsung Display presented a 12.4-inch flexible rollable OLED panel. This panel captivated attendees by stretching from a compact 49 millimeters to an impressive 254.4 millimeters, offering a transformative 5-fold magnification.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="682" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Samsung-flexible-display.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung flexible display" class="wp-image-561120" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Samsung-flexible-display.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Samsung-flexible-display-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Samsung-flexible-display-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Samsung-flexible-display-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Samsung-flexible-display-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The buzz around the anticipated borderless design also stirs significant interest. Korean media giant, The Elec, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/07/24/apple-samsung-lg-bezel-less-iphone-oled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">has previously reported collaborations</a> between Samsung, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LG</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>, targeting the development of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OLED</a> displays without any front-facing borders. The vision? Achieve a display with zero border width, providing users with an immersive and uninterrupted visual experience. </p>

<p>Apple has also <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/07/17/apples-recent-patent-hints-rollable-iphone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">submitted a patent for a device incorporating a rollable or scrollable display</a>, indicating potential integration into future products like iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks. According to a past report, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/07/08/apple-rumored-launch-foldable-screen-macbook-2026/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple is working to launch a foldable screen MacBook</a> in 2026.</p>

<p>Meeting such ambitious design goals necessitates further advancements in display technology. Both Samsung Display and LG Display are on a mission to refine the Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) and Under Panel Camera (UPC) technologies.</p>

<p>However, they also face the challenge of ensuring adequate antenna space in these futuristic designs. As these tech giants grapple with these technological nuances, the industry and consumers eagerly await a new era of smartphone innovation.</p>

<p>Rollable smartphones and foldable smartphones are both designed to provide larger displays in a portable form factor. However, they differ in how they expand their screen real estate. <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-smartphones">Foldable smartphones</a> typically have a flexible screen that folds inward, like a book. When unfolded, the screen forms a larger, seamless display. On the other hand, rollable smartphones have a flexible screen that can be unrolled to expand the display size. When not in use, the screen can be rolled back into the device, making it more compact and easier to carry. As companies keep experimenting with designs for the same, new products will always be on the horizon. Recently, Oppo <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/04/17/oppo-rollable-phone-patent/">patented a Rollable device,</a> which also featured an under-display camera. Innovation may spell big things for Oppo in the future.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-1024x576.webp?x44794" alt="Oppo " class="wp-image-530973" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Oppo-patent-reveals-interesting-feature-of-potential-rollable-smartphone.webp 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>What&#8217;s particularly interesting about Oppo&#8217;s rollable smartphone design is that the camera is only exposed when the device is expanded, remaining obscured under normal circumstances. This patent sparked excitement among tech enthusiasts, who are eager to see how the device will perform once it hits the market. Rollable smartphones are a relatively new concept, and only a few models have been released so far, while foldable smartphones have been available since 2019. <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/rollable-smartphones">Rollable smartphones</a> offer the advantage of a larger screen than foldable smartphones while maintaining a more pocketable form factor. Additionally, rollable displays may be more durable than foldable displays, which are prone to creasing and damage over time.</p>

<h3>Rollable Smartphones might just be the &#8216;Next Big Thing&#8217; in the Market</h3>

<p>Oppo is quickly positioning itself as a major player in the foldable/rollable market. The company has the vision to innovate with its technology, and this is not something new. Oppo was one of the first companies to patent the foldable smartphone design, alongside other major players such as <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/samsung">Samsung</a>. With more companies taking the initiative to experiment with flexible displays, it will be fascinating to see how these new form factors will be received by consumers. While it&#8217;s still too early to say whether rollables or foldables will ultimately become the norm, one thing is certain: the technology has come a long way since the days of the first Samsung <a href="http://gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold">Galaxy Fold</a> and has been perfected since. </p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oppo </a>is apparently working on a new smartphone that features a flexible display. But this model doesn&#8217;t feature a foldable screen like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Find N2</a> and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n2-flip/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Find N2 Flip</a>, rather it features a rollable display panel. So let&#8217;s have a look.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone-1024x576.webp?x44794" alt="Oppo" class="wp-image-530573" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/OPPO-rollable-phone.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The Chinese smartphone maker&#8217;s rollable display features some notable design elements. The new patent was spotted by <em><a href="https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/oppo-rollable-phone-design-invisible-cameras-leaked-patent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">91Mobiles </a></em>who spotted the document on CNIPA. While this isn&#8217;t the first time we have seen a smartphone with a rolling display. With this new display technology, users can change the form factor of the device with a single touch, which is different from the foldable smartphones that are sold in the market right now. </p>

<p>The patent carries a basic description of the product along with design sketches of this upcoming smartphone. Here, we can see that the device appears to have a camera module on the rear with an LED flash. Although, this module is housed between two parts of the rear panel, which is joined together with the rollable display and its supporting structure. However, there is no selfie camera on the front, or any visible cutouts to house such a sensor. So it is possible that the rollable smartphone may feature an under display camera.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="463" height="307" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Screenshot-2023-04-17-180556.png?x44794" alt="Oppo" class="wp-image-530574" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Screenshot-2023-04-17-180556.png 463w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Screenshot-2023-04-17-180556-300x199.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 463px) 100vw, 463px" /></figure></div>

<p>Apart from this, finer details regarding this futuristic Oppo device like its specifications are still unknown. Other notable design details include, volume rockers and the power button on the right side, with a USB Type C port and speaker grille found at the bottom. Keep in mind that this is still just a patent and it is unclear if the company is actually working on such a smartphone at the moment. So stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p>A new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xiaomi </a>patent has just surfaced online. This has revealed that the company is possibly working on a unique smartphone that features a rolling display that appears like a scroll. So here are all the details. </p>

<p>The Chinese tech giant&#8217;s latest patent was spotted with an application number CN307959735S. This design patent also showcases the appearance of this smartphone. The documentation carries design sketches of the device. Looking at these images, we can see that the smartphone features a columnar part on one side that houses the flexible display. This housing component has a peculiar scroll like shape that is likely due to the display that rolls into it.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="493" height="591" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/s_7b32cf530ae34b089d104b407a86b0df.png?x44794" alt="Xiaomi" class="wp-image-529072" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/s_7b32cf530ae34b089d104b407a86b0df.png 493w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/s_7b32cf530ae34b089d104b407a86b0df-250x300.png 250w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/s_7b32cf530ae34b089d104b407a86b0df-350x420.png 350w" sizes="(max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px" /></figure></div>

<p>In other words, it might also function similar to a scroll, with the display being pulled/rolled out of its housing. While it is interesting to imagine that Xiaomi is working on such a product, it is clear that this is still a conceptual design and not a gadget ready for mass production. Unfortunately, finer details like specifications are still unclear although this patented rolling smartphone might also feature a pop up camera module.</p>

<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time we&#8217;ve seen such a futuristic device and we&#8217;ve already seen rollable TV&#8217;s from LG. So a rollable phone for the mass market shouldn&#8217;t be too far ahead in the future. The design is quite interesting but the structural integrity and actual usability is still doubtful. So stick around for more updates.</p>

These supposed handsets will include the clamshell design.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-447745 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Screenshot-2022-03-08-152942.png?x44794" alt="OPPO" width="613" height="241" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Screenshot-2022-03-08-152942.png 613w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Screenshot-2022-03-08-152942-300x118.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px" /></p>
<p>According to Digital Chat Station, the Chinese smartphone maker is planning on launching additional foldable models of smartphones following the release of its Find N. Apparently, the brand&#8217;s first foldable offering saw sales that were higher than what was initially expected. So now, it is planning on launching two new models as well. One of these would feature the clamshell design while the second model will be a higher end variant that will feature a display that is larger than the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n-5g/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Find N</a>.</p>
<p>For those unaware, the Find N was launched back in December 2022. Furthermore, this higher end model will reportedly launch with a price tag of around 10,000 Yuan (roughly 1,583 US Dollars), as per the tipster. In other words, it will be even more expensive than the Find N, which was relatively one of the most affordable phones in the foldable handset segment.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-434805 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot.png?x44794" alt="Oppo find N Review split gaming controls" width="2560" height="1440" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot.png 2560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Oppo-find-N-Review_-Your-first-foldable-phone-5-40-screenshot-1920x1080.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></p>
<p>Notably, Digital Chat Station also stated that the display on this upcoming premium handset will be a rollable panel. Meaning, it might be similar in design to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-x-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OPPO X 2021 rollable phone concept</a>, which was the world&#8217;s first smartphone with an extending display. It could extend its display for 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches thanks to its 6.8mm Roll Motor and flexible OLED panel design. Keep in mind that this is still an unconfirmed news, so take this report with a pinch of salt for now. But it would be impressive if the company manages to launch this device since it would be the first mass produced commercial model of a rollable phone.</p>

Now, similar to other Chinese manufacturers, Honor has ambitious plans for its smartphones and has already patented new designs.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/opvouwbare-telefoons/honor-rollable-smartphone/">new patent</a> from Honor reveals that the company might be working on a rollable smartphone with a wrap-around screen. The images shared along with the patent application shows a narrow phone with a large wrap-around screen which covers the entire front and the back. Interestingly, there&#8217;s no front-facing camera visible of the device.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-416266 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent.jpeg?x44794" alt="Honor Rollable Smartphone with Wrap-around Display" width="1440" height="1450" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent.jpeg 1440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent-150x150.jpeg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent-298x300.jpeg 298w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent-768x773.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent-1017x1024.jpeg 1017w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent-696x701.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent-1068x1075.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/honor-rollable-smartphone-patent-417x420.jpeg 417w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" /></p>
<p>On the back, there&#8217;s a small vertical frame where the display parts come together and from where the screen is rolled out towards the front. Given that it has a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/wrap-around-screen">wrap-around screen</a>, the power button has been moved to the top. The vertical frame on the backpanel features a quad-camera setup with an LED flash. The system seems to be inspired from the Huawei Mate X foldable smartphone.</p>
<p>When the screen is fully rolled out, it will have a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tablet">tablet</a>-sized screen and likely to measure around 11-inch. This is similar to the Huawei Mate rollable smartphone that was reported a few weeks ago.</p>
<p>However, before launching a smartphone with rollable camera, the company is planning to launch a foldable smartphone. It has already registered model names Honor Magic Flip and Honor Magic Fold. Honor CEO <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/george-zhao">George Zhao</a> hs said that when the company launches its foldable smartphone, it&#8217;ll be the best in the market.</p>
<p>OPPO has already revealed its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/oppo-x-2021-worlds-first-extending-concept-smartphone/">OPPO X 2021 Rollable Concept Smartphone</a> that uses a rollable OLED panel allowing the display to extend from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches. However, the device isn&#8217;t available commercially. On the other hand, Xiaomi had launched <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/16/xiaomi-showcases-the-mi-mix-alpha-concept-smartphone-in-india/">Mi MIX Alpha</a> smartphone last year with a wrap-around screen.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-405438 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-z-slide-770x1155.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="504" height="756" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-z-slide-770x1155.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-z-slide-770x1155-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-z-slide-770x1155-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-z-slide-770x1155-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-z-slide-770x1155-696x1044.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-z-slide-770x1155-280x420.jpg 280w" sizes="(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/samsung-galaxy-unpacked/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the South Korean tech giant has applied for a new patent in Germany. Recently, we had also reported on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/08/06/huawei-working-mate-x-rollable-extendable-display/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei patenting a Mate X Rollable</a> that featured an extending display that wraps around the device. Now, it seems that Samsung is also working on a similar smartphone of its own. This model also features a rollable screen that wraps around the handset and its display can also be extended from one side.</p>
<p>Looking at the patented images, the device appears to be a regular smartphone from the front, while the rear sports a vertically stacked triple camera module on one side and the wrap around curved display covers nearly one half of the other side. Notably the non-curved side is where the display extends from, which can raise the total size of the primary screen by about 40 to 50 percent. The UI will apparently adapt based on the how the device is being used.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-405437 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-5g-770x727.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="573" height="541" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-5g-770x727.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-5g-770x727-300x283.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-5g-770x727-768x725.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-5g-770x727-696x657.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/samsung-galaxy-z-slide-5g-770x727-445x420.jpg 445w" sizes="(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px" /></p>
<p>One notable difference between the Huawei Mate X Rollable patent and the Galaxy Z Slide is the extending display&#8217;s supporting structure. While the former uses various magnets to keep the display from bending, the latter uses a multiple flexible / elastic &#8216;carrier films&#8217; to keep the display taut once it leaves the smartphone&#8217;s main housing and frame. At the moment, we have no have of confirming if the company is actually working on such a product or is just covering all bases. So stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-404478 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/huawei-rollable-smartphone-770x679.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei" width="770" height="679" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/huawei-rollable-smartphone-770x679.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/huawei-rollable-smartphone-770x679-300x265.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/huawei-rollable-smartphone-770x679-768x677.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/huawei-rollable-smartphone-770x679-696x614.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/huawei-rollable-smartphone-770x679-476x420.jpg 476w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/huawei-mate-rollable-smartphone/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the Chinese tech giant filed a patent with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) earlier this year. The patent depicts a handset with a rolling display that features a magnetic mechanism that helps flatten the panel when pull out. In other words, this magnetic system would prevent the extended display from folding or bending once out of the frame. Notably, the device&#8217;s display also wraps around the smartphone as well.</p>
<p>The shape of the pulled out display is maintained through the use of two strategically placed magnets. This even prevents any creasing of the device as well. Furthermore, the patent reveals that the Mate X Rollable sports a POLED (plastic organic light emitting diode) display with a plastic base layer. Interestingly, the patent describes the device and its structure in detail and reveals that the rollable phone has three modes. One in its regular mode with the display wrapped around and reaching the back of the device, while the second has it pulled outward slightly. The final mode is where it is fully extended.</p>

<p>In its compact form, the patented handset resembles the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha</a> Concept Phone. While the device has a 6.5 inch screen in this form, the front panel can grow by 70 percent in its pulled out form reaching 11 inch in size. Keep in mind that this is still a patent and its not confirmed if the company is actually working on such a rollable smartphone or is just covering all bases. So stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p>Now, Samsung Electronics has filed a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/trademark">trademark</a> at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for the name Samsung Galaxy Z Roll, <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/samsung-galaxy-z-roll/">reports LetsGoDigital</a>. As the name itself indicates, this is for the company&#8217;s first rollable smartphone.</p>
<p>The South Korean giant has been clubbing untraditional form factors under its Galaxy Z series and it continues to do the same with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/rollable-display">rollable display</a>. It continues the trend for Samsung of simple names for the devices such as Galaxy Z Fold for the foldable smartphone and Galaxy Z Flip for the clamshell-like flip phone.</p>
<p>Currently, not much is known about the upcoming Galaxy Z Roll rollable smartphone from Samsung. However, we could hear more about the device in the month of August, when the company is expected to launch the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-z-fold-3">Galaxy Z Fold 3</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-z-flip-3">Galaxy Z Flip 3</a> smartphones.</p>
<p>LG was also working on a rollable smartphone named LG Rollable which the company had showcased last year. However, the device has been discontinued given that the LG is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/04/05/lg-confirms-shutting-down-its-mobile-business-to-focus-on-connected-devices-smart-home/">taking an exit</a> from the smartphone business.</p>
<p>OPPO has also showcased a smartphone with a rollable display named <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-x-2021/">OPPO X 2021</a> but it was unveiled as a Concept Smartphone. It&#8217;s unlikely that OPPO plans to launch the smartphone commercially anytime soon. Given how things are going, it seems likely that Samsung will be the first company to commercially launch a rollable display phone.</p>

Since then, a number of flexible display-packing models have hit the ground running but the technology is still in its infancy. Display maker <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lg">LG</a> is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/14/lg-to-launch-rollable-rainbow-q83-in-first-half-2021/">working on several solutions</a> to fast track the adoption of the technology.  <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/rollable-phone-lg.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-364831" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/rollable-phone-lg.png?x44794" alt="" width="960" height="533" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/rollable-phone-lg.png 960w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/rollable-phone-lg-300x167.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/rollable-phone-lg-768x426.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/rollable-phone-lg-696x385.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/rollable-phone-lg-756x420.png 756w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></a></p>
<p>At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021, LG has teased the much-touted rollable smartphone. Rollable smartphones are gradually becoming a thing and although LG doesn&#8217;t have one yet, there have been several leaks surrounding an upcoming foldable from the tech giant.</p>
<p>LG basically used the rollable smartphone seemingly held by someone to project the &#8220;virtual&#8221; stage at its event with Jin-hong Kim who is the SVP and Head of Global Marketing at LG speaking at the event.</p>
<p><div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a title="OnePlus Band for Rs 2,499 (~$34) launched with AMOLED display, 14-day battery life, fitness tracking sensors and more" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/11/oneplus-band-for-rs-2499-34-launched-with-amoled-display-14-day-battery-life-fitness-tracking-sensors/" rel="bookmark">OnePlus Band for Rs 2,499 (~$34) launched with AMOLED display, 14-day battery life, fitness tracking sensor and more</a></strong></div></div></p>
<p>It is just what it is, a teaser, and nothing more. LG didn&#8217;t mention anything about the rollable smartphone at the event. That isn&#8217;t a surprise, though, as CES is not typically where LG announces its smartphones. LG usually keeps any smartphone announcement at CES to mid-range and entry-level models and not flagships. The company may unveil the rollable smartphone later this year, perhaps at MWC.</p>
<p>LG has a rollable OLED TV that is actually available to buy, so seeing a rollable smartphone is not a big surprise. It&#8217;s essentially the same thing but in a smaller package.</p>
<p><div style="width: 620px;" class="wp-video"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');</script><![endif]-->
<video class="wp-video-shortcode" id="video-364823-1" width="620" height="412" preload="metadata" controls="controls"><source type="video/mp4" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable.mp4?_=1" /><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable.mp4">https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable.mp4</a></video></div></p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time that we&#8217;ve seen a rollable smartphone though. Last year at CES, TCL showed off a rollable smartphone. However, it was a non-working prototype. It basically had a printed screen on it. So you could roll and unroll it, but couldn&#8217;t open Twitter and other apps on it. OPPO also showed off a rollable phone last year, which actually worked.</p>
<p>So rollable phones are likely to be the next big thing, in the world of smartphones. And it&#8217;s going to be impressive to see how this works.</p>
