Samsung is working on its first ISOCELL camera sensor with an RGBW color model, the company confirmed over a webinar hosted by TECNO Mobile. The sensor has been named the ISOCELL GWB and will be going with a 64MP resolution, quashing previous rumors about it having a resolution of 50MP.

The ISOCELL GWB was presented by the Vice President and Head of R&D at Samsung Electronics China (via SamMobile) who called it “the most human eye-like image sensor.” This has been made possible through the RGBW color filter pattern in which a new white pixel improves the sensor’s light sensitivity for better low light photos while also boosting color accuracy.

Samsung has developed the ISOCELL GWB in partnership with Chinese smartphone company TECNO Mobile, which makes it likely that the sensor will end up on a TECNO smartphone as early as next year. It will not remain exclusive to TECNO though, and other brands should also be able to benefit from it.

That said, a 64MP RGBW sensor is not the only one Samsung is working on currently. Rumor has it that a 50MP RGBW solution is also set to arrive next year after the GWB goes live.

As for the release date, the ISOCELL GWB doesn’t really fit the leaked camera specifications of the Galaxy S22 series – the S22 Ultra is expected to come with a 108MP primary snapper while the standard S22 and S22+ models will reportedly be using 50MP sensors. Therefore, our 64MP champ will likely not be making its debut at Galaxy Unpacked in February.

The global smartphone image sensor market bagged a total revenue of $7 billion in the first half of 2021, as per the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service report titled “Smartphone Image Sensor Market Share Q2 2021: Sony Captures 41 Percent Share”.

The report (via: Business Wire) reveals that the image sensor market managed to record revenue growth of more than 10 percent year-over-year in the first half of 2021.

But it was Sony Semiconductor that managed to rank #1 and took the spot in the smartphone image sensor shipments in H1 2021 with an impressive revenue share of 42 percent. This was followed by Samsung System LSI and OmniVision Technologies.

According to the analysis, the top three vendors accounted for about 80% of revenue in the global smartphone image sensor market in H1 2021.

Jeffrey Mathews, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics says, “The image sensor vendors witnessed an accelerated momentum from smartphone OEMs, who actively adopted high-resolution CIS and low-pixel CIS products for multicamera applications, to secure inventory and cater to pent-up demand. Sony, Samsung, and OmniVision supplied key high-resolution CIS products to leading smartphone OEMs in H1 2021.”

Further, the introduction of new high-resolution and large format CIS products from the major vendors are expected to boost the revenue opportunities in the market, as per Stephen Entwistle, Vice President of the Strategic Technologies Practice at Strategy Analytics.

However, he added that the supply fluctuations of various high-pixel and low-pixel CIS products continue to challenge the shipments growth prospects of the smartphone image sensor market in 2021 and beyond.

A previous report revealed that Sony led the CMOS Image Sensor market share in 2020, but Samsung is narrowing the gap. The latter recently launched a 200MP ISOCELL HP1 sensor – a reflection of the company’s design policy of pushing the boundaries of existing technologies. The OEM also recently revealed plans to launch a 576MP camera sensor in four years. Sony has been busy as well though and recently unveiled its CMOS IMX661 image sensor with a 127.68MP pixel count.
