<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> has introduced a major shift in its DeX desktop experience with the upcoming One UI 8 update. Built on top of Android 16, the new DeX mode marks the company’s transition from its long-standing custom implementation to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a>’s native Desktop Mode framework.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex-1024x538.webp?x44794" alt="Samsung DeX" class="wp-image-698728" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex-1024x538.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex-300x158.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex-768x403.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex-696x365.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex-1068x561.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex-800x420.webp 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Dex.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Samsung DeX originally launched in 2017 with the Galaxy S8 series. It aimed to turn smartphones into desktop-like workstations through a dedicated interface when connected to external displays. Over the years, Samsung added numerous features to enhance functionality, including taskbar settings, keyboard customization, and app window controls.</p>

<p>In One UI 8, Samsung has removed many of these classic DeX elements. The dedicated DeX tab in settings no longer exists and has been replaced by a “Connected Display” menu. The app drawer now scrolls vertically, and the “Exit DeX” and “Lock DeX” buttons have been removed. Settings for taskbar visibility, keyboard placement, audio output, and app pinning have also been removed.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8-1024x576.webp?x44794" alt="Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8" class="wp-image-698729" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-DeX-OneUI-8.webp 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/06/one-ui-8s-dex-mode-shows-striking-similarities-to-androids-new-desktop-mode/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung’s decision aligns</a> with Google’s broader strategy. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/04/googles-version-of-samsungs-dex-is-almost-ready-heres-the-first-look/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Android 16 introduces a new native Desktop Mode</a> that supports freeform app windows, a persistent taskbar, and improved display management. Google and Samsung have worked together to improve the windowing system, allowing Samsung to build DeX features on top of Android’s official implementation instead of maintaining a separate version.</p>

<p>The current One UI 8 beta shows that DeX still supports core functionality, including the touchpad, S Pen input, and wireless display connectivity. However, many advanced features from the older DeX system are missing. Samsung may reintroduce some of them in future updates, but the company appears committed to this unified direction.</p>

<p>By aligning with Google’s desktop roadmap, Samsung is positioning DeX for better long-term support and broader compatibility across Android devices. While the initial transition may frustrate power users, the integration could lead to a more consistent and capable desktop experience across the ecosystem.</p>

<p>Samsung is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/04/one-ui-8-rollout-wont-follow-one-ui-7s-pace-beta-could-kick-off-as-soon-as-next-month/">gearing up</a> to debut One UI 8, based on Android 16, with its Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. A fresh leak from DevOfIpos, showcasing One UI 8’s BYE2 firmware on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s25-ultra/">Galaxy S25 Ultra</a>, spotlights a reimagined Samsung DeX—the desktop-like experience for Galaxy devices. The photos suggest One UI 8&#8217;s DeX is borrowing UI elements from Android 16’s desktop mode. This leak follows an earlier <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/04/googles-version-of-samsungs-dex-is-almost-ready-heres-the-first-look/">preview of Android 16’s Desktop Mode</a>, which already showed striking similarities to Samsung DeX. Google&#8217;s version is also enriched with a taskbar, split-screen multitasking, and quick settings.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-685377" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GqLgAs0W8AApEH5.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Key changes in One UI 8&#8217;s new DeX include a taskbar with app icons now centered at the bottom, unlike its usual left-aligned setup, and slimmer status icons on the right. Desktop windowing lets users resize and run multiple apps at once, much like a PC. The app drawer pops up compactly, while a card-based Search bar scans apps, files, and settings, with shortcuts to Downloads and Screenshots via Samsung Files and Gallery. The Quick Settings panel is tucked bottom right, and it looks sharper too.</p>

</figure>

<p>If DeX is indeed built on Android 16’s desktop mode, it could hint at Google’s plans to expand desktop functionality across Android devices, especially with Google I/O 2025 (May 20-21) nearing. Samsung’s DeX is already a hit on the Z Fold 6’s 7.6-inch display, and it might set the stage for rivals. Will One UI 8’s DeX outshine Windows 11’s phone integration, or is it just a polished rebase? More leaks before July’s Unpacked should clear things up.</p>

<p>Technology companies have many projects that don&#8217;t meet expectations. For example, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/07/15/google-begins-wider-deployment-of-chromeos-flex-for-old-pcs-and-macs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google&#8217;s ChromeOS</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/05/15/galaxy-z-flip-5-tipped-feature-samsung-dex/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung&#8217;s DeX</a> have not been as successful as they hoped. However, there are rumors that Samsung is working on a new device that combines DeX and ChromeOS. This could be a way for both companies to achieve the success they want. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Rumors Hint at Samsung&#8217;s DeX-ChromeOS Hybrid Notebook, Powered by Exynos</strong></h2>

<p>DeX is a platform that allows users to connect their Samsung <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/10/26/one-ui-5-0-update-roadmap-unveiled-for-samsung-galaxy-smartphones-tablets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy smartphones</a> and tablets to a monitor or TV to create a desktop-like experience. When connected to a larger display, DeX expands the phone&#8217;s screen and provides access to a full-size keyboard and mouse. ChromeOS on the other hand is a lightweight operating system that is designed for Chromebooks, which are typically budget-friendly laptops. Now, the power of these two products is merging.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="742" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-1024x742.gif?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-538251" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-1024x742.gif 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-300x218.gif 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-768x557.gif 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-1536x1114.gif 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-696x505.gif 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-1068x774.gif 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-1920x1392.gif 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-579x420.gif 579w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/samsung-dex-chromeos-hybrid-notebook-1-324x235.gif 324w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Samsung is rumored to be working on a new device that combines its DeX platform with Google&#8217;s ChromeOS. The device, which is rumored to be called the DeXbook, is said to be powered by an Exynos chip and could be announced alongside a new Exynos-powered Galaxy Book for Windows on Arm.</p>

<p>As you know, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/04/07/samsung-exynos-chips-galaxy-smartphones/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Exynos</a> is Samsung&#8217;s own mobile processor. It is typically used in its Galaxy smartphones and tablets, but it has also been used in some of its laptops. The Exynos chip is said to be more power-efficient than Intel&#8217;s chips, which could make the DeXbook a more attractive option for users who are looking for a long-lasting battery life. But when it comes to performance, that&#8217;s not the case.</p>

<p>The DeXbook is still a rumor at this point. However, if Samsung does decide to release this device, it could be a very compelling option for users who are looking for a versatile and powerful laptop.</p>

<p>According to Sammobile, the upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Flip 5</a> from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> is set to address some of the shortcomings of its predecessor. While the Galaxy Z Flip line offers high-end features like powerful <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon/">Snapdragon</a> chips and impressive 120Hz <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amoled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMOLED</a> displays, it has been lacking in certain areas.</p>

<p>One notable absence has been the support for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-dex/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung DeX</a>, a feature that allows users to transform their Samsung devices into workstations with a desktop-like interface. However, sources suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will break this trend and become the smallest Samsung phone to support DeX.</p>

<h2>Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be the most compact Samsung phone to feature DeX support</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="541" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex-1024x541.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-536984" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex-1024x541.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex-300x159.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex-768x406.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex-696x368.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex-1068x565.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex-794x420.webp 794w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Samsung-Dex.webp 1150w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>For those unfamiliar with DeX, it enables users to project a desktop interface onto external displays such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smart-tv/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smart TVs</a> or <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/monitor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">monitors</a>, either wirelessly or through an HDMI adaptor. This functionality allows for the connection of standard input devices like mice and keyboards, creating a more productive work environment.</p>

<p>Samsung has also developed a DeX app for Windows and Mac, enabling users to utilize DeX on their computers by simply connecting their Samsung devices via a USB-C cable. While DeX can be used on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tablet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tablets</a> directly, smartphones lack the screen estate for this purpose.</p>

<p>As for existing Galaxy Z Flip models, it remains uncertain whether they will receive DeX support through a software update once the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is officially released. Although details are scarce, it is worth noting that older models should have the capability to run DeX smoothly, raising hopes that at least some of them may receive the feature.</p>

<p>The Galaxy Z Flip 5, along with the anticipated <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Fold 5</a>, is expected to be unveiled at Samsung&#8217;s upcoming Unpacked event, projected to take place in late July. Both devices will come preloaded with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-13/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Android 13</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/one-ui/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">One UI</a> 5.1.1 and will be eligible for four major OS upgrades, aligning with Samsung&#8217;s standard offering for its modern Galaxy flagships.</p>

<p>Additionally, the event is rumored to include announcements regarding the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-watch-6/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Watch 6 series</a>, as well as the introduction of the Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S9+, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-tab-s9-ultra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tab S9 Ultra</a>.</p>

<p>Although Samsung&#8217;s Insights <a href="https://insights.samsung.com/2021/01/14/the-beginners-guide-to-samsung-dex-6/#:~:text=In%20August%202019%2C%20Samsung%20introduced,DeX%20right%20from%20their%20computer.">webpage</a> on Wireless DeX says &#8220;latest devices&#8221;, currently, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s21-5g/">Samsung Galaxy S21</a> series running <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/one-ui-3.1">One UI 3.1</a> only seems to support it. To get it, update the DeX client on the PC to the latest version. You can download it <a href="https://www.samsung.com/in/apps/samsung-dex/">here</a> too. Now, follow the steps below:</p>
<ul>
<li>Open the DeX shortcut on the Phone and Select the &#8220;DeX on PC&#8221; option.</li>
<li>From the list of devices available(if many), choose one and select &#8220;Start Now&#8221;.</li>
<li>After accepting the Prompt on PC, you can start using it wirelessly.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Note</strong>: If you have &#8220;Link to Windows&#8221;(Samsung&#8217;s Microsoft Your Phone-like soln) connected, this won&#8217;t work. Be sure to turn it off.</p>
<p>The report also says that the resolution is limited to 1080p. As for performance, the feature is reportedly working fine on PC and not as bad as when connecting to TV. One more thing to note, the S-Pen isn&#8217;t reportedly seamless.</p>
<p>Apparently, you can&#8217;t sketch drawings on Samsung Notes using S-Pen(on your device) when opened on the PC.</p>
<p>Samsung DeX is a software platform to make your smartphone into a desktop computing machine. It initially required a DeX Station/Pad as an accessory. Later, it <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/09/09/samsung-galaxy-note-9-can-now-turn-into-a-pc-without-a-dock-meet-the-new-usb-c-to-hdmi-adapter/">got reduced</a> into an HDMI adapter. This made users connect to external monitors/displays and enjoy a desktop experience.</p>
<p>In 2019, it finally brought the DeX for PC however required a cable. With the launch of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/05/samsung-galaxy-note-20-galaxy-note-20-ultra-are-official/">Galaxy Note 20 last year</a>, it finally expanded the horizon wirelessly. As long as Smart TVs with <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/miracast">Miracast</a> support and Phone are connected to the Same Wi-Fi, users were able to use DeX wirelessly.</p>
<p>Anyway, the feature is finally supported for PC and you can expect the compatibility to extend to many devices like Galaxy Tab S7 which <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/19/galaxy-tab-s7-s7-get-one-ui-3-1-via-ota-update/">recently got</a> the One UI 3.1 update.</p>

It appears that the South Korean company will indeed launch the new DeX Pad soon as it has trademarked the “DeX Pad” moniker on Dec. 29.</p>
<p>The Samsung DeX Station that is currently available in the market is compatible with Galaxy S8, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s8-2/">Galaxy S8+</a> and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-note-8/">Galaxy Note 8</a>. The DeX Station requires users to place any of the aforementioned Galaxy phone in an upright position. However, the upcoming Samsung DeX Pad will allow users to lay the smartphone flat on a surface so that it can be used as a touchpad and a keyboard. It is speculated to carry support for wireless charging.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-164811 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-DeX-Pad-Trademarked.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung DeX Pad Trademarked" width="367" height="375" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-DeX-Pad-Trademarked.jpg 367w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Samsung-DeX-Pad-Trademarked-294x300.jpg 294w" sizes="(max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px" /></p>

<p>However, there is no telling whether users will be to connect the Samsung DeX Pad with an external display wirelessly. Rumors have it that it will be compatible with the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s8/">Galaxy S8</a>, S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 phablets. When Samsung had launched these smartphones, in some regions it had provided DeX Station for free as a pre-order bonus. There is a possibility that the new DeX Pad will be available for free for customers who pre-order the Galaxy S9 and S9+.</p>
<p>Without the offer, it is expected to carry a price tag of $150. Samsung may sell the original DeX Station at a reduced price after the arrival of DeX Pad. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ along with the DeX Pad are slated to get unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018.</p>

<p>Samsung DeX was introduced earlier in this year alongside the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to allow the users of these phones to enjoy full-blown Android desktop environment on a larger display.
