Samsung revealed a special type of DRAM that, according to the company, benefits mobile devices when used alongside the traditional DRAM modules. The company calls this new DRAM technology Low Latency Wide IO (LLW). This is reportedly more efficient in processing real-time data than LPDDR modules that are currently used in most mobile devices. Due to the lower latency, the company claims this special type of DRAM is a perfect fit for gaming and AI applications.

The LLW DRAM sits right next to the CPU inside the SoC

Samsung initially announced this new DRAM technology back in January of this year and reiterated this in October, alongside the introduction of its LPDDR5X CAMM2.

Samsung today shared a video showcasing the possibilities of the new LLW DRAM. The short video shows four types of devices, namely a smartphone, a laptop, a game console, and their XR devices that can benefit from it.

The Galaxy S24 Series will probably not get the LLW DRAM inside

Although Samsung showcases a smartphone in the video, they didn’t mention any timing of the launch of this new tech or its progress. On the other hand, the upcoming Galaxy flagship, the Galaxy S24 series is basically ready at this point and is speculated to launch as early as January next year.

Additionally, the LLW module sits right next to the SoC as shown in the video. So, the SoC will have to include this inside. As you probably know, Samsung got back to its dual-platform strategy for the Galaxy S24 series. So, they will have to work with TSMC for the revised fabrication of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that includes this module inside. And all of it is unlikely to be accomplished under the hood or within the remaining time. So, users may have to wait for at least the Galaxy S25 series to experience the LLW DRAM technology.

The LPDDR5X DRAM is a significant improvement of the LPDDR5 and it’s a culmination of a partnership between Samsung and Qualcomm. The Samsung-Qualcomm collaboration certainly fast-tracked the development of the new chip. Its speed surpassed the previous maximum speed for DRAM which was 7,5Gbps.

Although the LPDDR5X technology is not new, it has seen some innovations even with the minimal internal redesign. The LPDDR5X technology is currently used in some smartphones but the new chips expand the utility and performance of the technology. It is a low-power consumption technology that delivers high performance. The LPDDR5X memory will achieve higher speeds with minimal internal redesigning. It is well suited for applications outside smartphones like PCs, servers, automobiles, and more.

Both Samsung and Qualcomm are excited about the completed validation of the LPDDR5X DRAM chip. Daniel Lee, EVP of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung, and Ziad Asghar, VP of Product Management at Qualcomm were both upbeat about the development. Samsung says the market availability of the chips was accelerated by more than a year following its collaboration with Qualcomm. There are no fine details yet for the release of the LPDDR5 DRAM commercially, but this could be very close.
